• Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS breaking down and sluggish

  I am in the process of switching from Windows to a Linux based system and am currently deciding between distributions...I am currently trying Ubuntu as WUBI. I find that my experience is not very smooth and streamlined for example, crash-reports, bugs, applications taking time to run etc etc (this in spite of the fact that I am very patient and am constantly researching solution to different driver and application issues). Was wondering if this is because I am running through NTFS right now or is it just like this? Looking to switch to Linux because of its opensource nature, interest in software development in college as well as maximizing the potential of my machine. I am running an AMD quadcore-x64 2.2GHz, 6GB RAM and 750 GB HDD on an HP G6 notebook. I would appreciate any honest opinions.

• Has any language become greatly popular for something other than its intended purpose?

  Take this scenario: A programmer creates a language to solve some problem. He then releases this language to help others solve problems like it. Another programmer discovers it's actually much better for some different category of problems. By virtue of this new application, the language then becomes popular for that application primarily. Are there any instances of this actually occurring? Put another way, does the intended purpose of a language have any bearing on how it's actually used, or whether it becomes popular? Is it even important that a language have an advertised purpose?

• KnockoutJS 2.3.0 - Uncaught Error: You cannot apply bindings multiple times to the same element.

I had some dynamically added DOM elements and re-applying bindings worked before. It always seemed like a workaround/hack, but now Knockout is telling me that I shouldn’t do it. The quick way to fix this is to use ko.cleanNode($(‘#id’) and this works. A different/possibly better way, as suggested by x0n might be to use templates and Knockout’s template binding (<script type=’text/html’>…</script>).   Thanks again to the StackOverflow community for quickly providing me with the solution. • Need to redirect Wordpress category archives

  I recently changed my Wordpress category structure a bit, changing some of the names and placing some under different parent categories. I don't use category name in my post URLs, so that's not a problem. But my category archive pages are indexed and have page rank I don't want to lose. So I need to redirect: "/category/old_cat_name" to "/category/new_cat_name". Or in some cases to /new_cat_name/new_sub_cat. I gather that I can't do this though the WP Redirection plugin and that I have to modify my .htaccess. Can someone show me what lines to add there--or is there another better way to do this? Thanks.

I have checked with the host, they say all is well on their side. How can we fix it? The site also went off from Google Search. We are about to rebuild this site to a better professional platform but first we would like to have an idea of what happened and how to fix it.

We're using Pivotal Tracker to track the project and have gathered some pretty well thought out stories. We're also trying to keep some of our (Prince2/Waterfall mindset) project managers happy. So far I've got them to accept that requirements always change priorities always change some of the requirements won't be delivered if you fix the time scale you should fix the time scale short sprints and regular review is good However they still feel like they need to get a better grip of roughly how much will be delivered within a certain time. I've come up with a spreadsheet to demonstrate what we might expect to get done in a range of 4 different timescales. Questions Are we setting ourselves up to fail Are there better ways to do this

My criteria are the following: No Flash (this rules out more than half) Full history (meaning that it is possible to access all previous conversation for future reference. • Changing balls direction in Pong

  I'm making a Pong game to get started with game-developement but I've run into a problem that i can't figure out. When trying to change the balls direction it doesn't change. This is the relevant code: function moveBall(){ this.speed = 2.5; this.direction = 2; if(this.direction == 1){ ball.X +=this.speed; } else if(this.direction == 2){ ball.X -=this.speed; } } function collision(){ if(ball.X == 500){ moveBall.direction = 2; } if(ball.X == 300){ moveBall.direction = 1; } } Why doesn't it work? I've tried many different ways, and none of them seem to work. The moveBall.direction changes though, since it alerts the new direction once it reaches the defined ball.X position. • OnTriggerEnter not called

  I am working on a fight game with 3D models but played like a 2D game. So the player characters have swords. The Player GameObject has several body parts that are colider triggers. The sword is a rigidbody colider. Ive had som problems with colisions not being detected. Ive added some Debug.Log and slowed downed the animations so what i can see is this: When players are close to each other the sword connects from a different angle. The OnTriggerStay is called several times BEFORE OnTriggerEnter is called if players are too close. Sometimes if too close the OnTriggerStay is called several times but the OnTriggerEnter is NEVER called. Any ideas on why this is?

• Atheros 922 PCI WIFI is disabled in Unity but enabled in terminal - How to get it to work?

  I am trying to get my PCI Wireless Atheros 922 card to work. It is disabled in Unity: both the network utility and the desktop (see screenshot http://www.amisdurailhalanzy.be/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-25%2013:19:54.png) I tried many different advises on many different forums. Installed 12.10 instead of 12.04, enabled all interfaces... etc. I have read about the aht9 driver... The terminal shows no hw or sw lock for the Atheros card, nevertheless, it is still disabled. Nothing worked so far, the card is still disabled. Any help is much appreciated. • Initialized variables vs named constants

  I'm working on a fundamental programming class in college and our textbook is "programming logic and design" by joyce farrell(spelling?) Anyhow, I'm struggling conceptually when it comes to initialized variables and named constants. Our class is focusing on pseudo-code for the time being and not one particular language so let me illustrate what I'm talking about. Let's say I am declaring a variable named "myVar" and the data type is numeric: num myVar now I want to initialize it (I don't understand this concept) starting with the number 5 num myVar = 5 how is that any different than creating a named constant?

• can't see myself in Skype video call

  I'm running 12.04 and I've installed skype via the software centre. As with 11.10 everything works fine with 12.04 as well. There is only one thing that does not work. I can't see myself in Skype video calls. The video call works fine, I can see the other side the other side can see me. Buid in microphone works. If I click on 'show myself' during the video call nothing happens. I know that it works on Ubuntu in general as I had it working a while back on a different machine (Xubuntu 11.04). Could that be related to the GPU? I'm now on a intel/nvidia one. Any Ideas where I can hunt for some options or tweaking?

• Low complexity shader to indicate the sides of a polyline

  I have a bunch of polylines that I draw using GL_LINES. They can have thousands of points. They actually represent the separation of land and water on a map. I don't have complete polygons, just the ordered set of points. I'm looking for a neat but efficient way to visually convey Side A and Side B as being different. For example I could offset the polyline in one direction a few times and fade it out (but every offset is doubling the number of points), or offset it once to make a "ribbon" and give one side a 'glow' like effect to mimic the outer glow or shadow of a polygon). This is for a mobile application and I'm using OpenGL ES 2. I'd like to keep the effect as simple as possible from a complexity stand point. I'm looking for some additional ideas; maybe there's a clever shader technique out there or a visual effect I haven't considered.

• Do leaderboard sets (in Game Center) allow 500 unique leaderboards?

  The Game Kit Programming Guide for iOS claims: The number of different leaderboards allowed increases to 500 leaderboards per game when leaderboard sets have been enabled...Leaderboard sets offer developers the ability to combine several leaderboards into a single group. But their example (see image below) implies that a single leaderboard is placed into multiple leaderboard sets. Is that the only way to be able to use the full 500 leaderboards? by combining the same leaderboard into multiple sets? I want to be able to have 500 unique leaderboards that are not duplicated between sets. Is this possible?

• Explicit resource loading in Ogre (Mogre)

  I am just starting to learn Mogre and what I would like to do is to be able to load resources 'explicitly' (i.e. I just provide an absolute path instead of using a resource group tied to a directory). This is very different to manually loading resources, which I believe in Ogre has a very specific meaning, to build up the object using Ogres methods. I want to use Ogres resource management system/resource loading code, but to have finer control over which files are loaded and in what groups they are. I remember reading how to do this but cannot find the page again; I think its possible to do something like: Declare a resource group Declare the resource(s) (this is when the actual resource file name is provided) Initialise the resource group to actually load the resource(s) Is this the correct procedure? If so, is there any example code showing how to do this?

• Can anyone recommend a chorded keyboard for a programmer?

  Pre-emptive strike: It's subjective, but it's also Friday... ;) Inspired by this great question and related to this great question, I have decided to buy a chorded keyboard. (A chorded keyboard, by the way, is one with a reduced number of keys, that must be pressed together, in chords, to give all the possible characters etc. - see wikipedia) Being a programmer means that the keys I use regularly are likely different to a regular Joe (a lot more semi-colons for a start), so I was wondering if any of my fellow programmers had tested a chorded keyboard for use on the battlefield of code? Being a nerd, I'm also interested in the extent to which I'd be able to customise my chorded keyboard. (Macros? Shortcuts?) • Version hash to solve Event Sourcing problems

  The basic examples I have seen about Event Sourcing do not deal with out of order events, clock offsets in different systems and late events from system partitions. I am wondering if more polished Event Sourcing implementations rely on a version stamp of modified objects? For example, assuming that the system is rendering the entity Client with version id ABCD1234. If the user modifies the entity, the system will create an event with the modified fields AND the version id reference to which version it applies. Later the event responder would detect out of order events and merge them.

  I am trying to make a small demo in Javascript, I have a black border and a car the car travels randomly and a line is drawn of its trail. When the user click inside the area it creates an object (we'll call this the wall). If the car hits the wall then it goes back 3 paces and tries a different route. When its hit the wall it needs to log down its location so it does NOT make that mistake again. • How to spawn a character at certain point and walk to a set point

  I am making a game where I have a background image of a neighborhood. Each location has a different number of customers that are generated to walk on sidewalks. They all walk to a specific location (like a stand or cart that sells stuff), after they get to location I want them to interact with the cart. However, if another customer is already in a sale interaction then the others get in line in order of arrival. After the transaction the customers walk off screen. Any information on how I can do this and what game engine would be needed? Any one have any idea where I should go for this. I already have my game done up through Eclipse/Java without any game engine.
