• Starting out with Exchange Server development

  Hi, We've written several Outlook Add-ins for various projects and have now been asked to look at writing a Exchange server add-in. We will need to inspect all incoming / outgoing msgs and tag / file them into a document management system. If it's a message that we are interested in we would ideally like to change the default icon that is displayed in Outlook. We could I guess settle for Categorising / colour coding the email but we've been asked for a icon. Any guidance on how to get started / killer reference apps much appricaiated. Oh we will be needing to target both Exchange 2003 and 2007. vb.net is our bag but were fine with c# too. Thanks in advance - liking the site thus far btw

• Retrieving specific tuples using Mysql

  Hi, I have some problems retrieving specific tuples. I am actually a student trying to build a Room management system. I have two tables: Room(roomID,hotelname,rate) and Reservation(resID,arriveDate,departDate,roomID). I am not sure how to retrieve the rooms that are available between 2 specific dates. This was the query that i used. SELECT Room.roomID,hotelname,rate FROM Room LEFT JOIN Reservation on ( Room.roomID=Reservation.resID and arriveDate >='2010-02-16' and departDate <='2010-02-20' ) GROUP BY roomID,hotelname,rate HAVING count(*)=0;' but it returns an empty set. Can any1 be kind enough to tell me what mistake i am doing??

• What is the standard way of using a sitemap with pages that require specific information passed to t

  Hi, I have a website for which many pages rely on information passed to them (usually in the form of a querystring) or on a session variable. When making a web application, how do you normally handle these particular pages in regards to the sitemap? If you're using the standard ASP.NET menu control, it will render the node on the menu and if you click it, you could get an exception stating that a session variable doesn't exist (if it hasn't been created yet). For example, if you're making a user management area: All of these nodes get rendered, but I don't want the user to click on edit user or delete user without specifying someone to edit or delete. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What i'm trying to do is, assuming that a client wants to know the distance between 2 locations, in miles or kms. As an example, if the user wants to know the distance between London and Amsterdam, should that distance be calculated by a formule or should it be already stored on the database?   All, I am using Zend Framework and Zend_Session to do global session management for my application. I plan to clear all sessions on logout and hence am using the following code: if($this->sessionExists()) { $this->destroy(); } But it seems like it's not doing a good job.. I am getting an error: PHP Warning: session_destroy() [<a href='function.session-destroy'> function.session-destroy</a>]: Trying to destroy uninitialized session How can I get rid of this error? Is there an alternative to sessionExists()?

  Hi everyone, I've been researching this problem for awhile now and I can't seem to come to a solution, hopefully someone here can help. Currently I'm working with Microsoft SQL server management, I've been trying to do the following: Previously, the old query would just return the results that fit between two dates Heres the previous query: SELECT e.Name, o.StartDate, o.EndDate FROM dbo.Name e, dbo.Date o WHERE where e.Name = o.Name and o.StartDate <= '2010-09-28 23:59:59' and o.EndDate >= '2010-9-28 00:00:00' and e.Name like 'A' Example table that is produced after the query runs (The real table has a lot more rows obviously :P) : Name Start End A 2010-09-28 07:00:00 2010-09-28 17:00:00 A 2010-09-28 13:45:00 2010-09-28 18:00:00 A 2010-09-28 08:00:00 2010-09-28 16:00:00 A 2010-09-28 07:00:00 2010-09-28 15:30:00 However we need to change this, so that the query does the following: find the dates that intersect for a day x find the dates that don't intersect for a day x I've found a real useful site regarding this http://bloggingabout.net/blogs/egiardina/archive/2008/01/30/check-intersection-of-two-date-ranges-in-sql.aspx However the date to compare against is inputted, mine on the other hand has to all dates that intersect/don't intersect. • Connection Timeout Linked Server

  I have created a linked server from one SQL Server 2005 to Another 2005. When I run an update query through the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), it runs in under a second. If I run the query through a asp webpage it times out. I ran SQL Profiler to see if I noticed anything as well as the Activity Monitor in SSMS and all I found was that a lock was being created (Wait type LOCK_M_U), but I can't find what is locking it. Any help would be appreciated. Wade

• Way to check for foreign key references before deleting in MySQL?

  I'm working with a content management system, and users are prompted with a confirmation screen before deleting records. Some records are foreign key referenced in other tables, and therefore they cannot be deleted. I would like to display a message beside a given record if it has foreign key references. To know whether I should display the message for a record, I could just query the referencing table and see if there are references. But the problem is, there are about a dozen tables with records potentially referencing this record, and a lookup could take a "long" time. Is there an easy way to tell whether the record is delete-ready (ie. has no foreign key references)?

• Should i use TabContainer for multiple pages?

  I'm considering if it is a good idea to use an ASP.Net TabContainer-Control in the way that every TabPanel contains content of a different page. For example: Next i want to implement in my application is the masterdata management. Normally i would create one aspx page for every masterdata-table (f.e. Customer - MD_Customer.aspx). Then i would add a link into my Menu to this page. Now i'm thinking of creating one aspx page for all(Masterdata.aspx) with a Tabcontainer and an UpdatePanel for every type of Masterdata. The link it the menu could have an additional MDType as URL-Parameter. My main concerns are related to performance(one "page" for every TabPanel currently means 7 "pages" in one) and maintainability because of increasing complexity. Is it a good approach or a bad idea? • Delete database. Entity Framework

  I have a very annoying issue and I would love a solution. The problem: I followed the MDSN tutorial- http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-4/getting-started-with-aspnet-mvc4/adding-a-model Then I tried this guide according to my needs and I set up a database GAMES.MDF.   Then, I deleted the database and set it up again, is supposedly work (I can write and read data), but There is no such database in the APP_DATA folder. Like it keeps it somewhere in my PC and reuse it.   I even tried a new project and it did not work, works but not in the library, and it even uses the data I created before. I even deleted the DB from SQL Server Management Studio 2008. Does anyone know what the hell? How do I delete it permanently, not to remain any trace of him?   Thank you.  Ido

• How do I setup a shared session between two users on my Ruby on Rails powered site?

  Hey guys, The website that I'm building includes a section where two users can interact. I think I know how to do most of it, except the actual session sharing part. I'm using Ruby on Rails & Javascript (jquery), and I've got user login and session management all working okay. Would the best way to create a shared session be to have a SharedSession model, with accompanying database table, with participant1ID, participant2ID etc? Is there a better way? • MySQL look for missing ratings

  Hopefully I can ask this without being confusing. I am a photographer and I am having some of our clients rate pictures that we have taken. We have hundreds of pictures in our portfolio that they may be rating. What I want to do is ask our clients to rate pictures again, but only show them the pictures they haven't yet rated. I currently have three tables: one that stores the actual ratings, one that stores the pictures (or location of each picture), and one that stores the information about the rater. I'm using codeigniter for my db management, if that helps at all. What I have so far is this: "SELECT * FROM ratings LEFT JOIN portfolio ON ratings.portfolioid = portfolio.portfolioid" This will give me a row for each rating, but won't show me where a rating is missing for a picture.   What might be said or implied at an interview or job posting that should set off alarm bells for a coder? I'm still only a few years in the industry but I already know to look out for excessive red tape and bureaucracy. Cubes and a noisy office also tell me that I'll be both miserable and unproductive and that management does not appreciate what coders need to work well. Edit: The way things are going I'm taking extra time to look at the company's stability. If they depend on a single vendor for their livelihood and could be out of business if the vendor decides they don't really need the service or can do it in-house. What are your dealbreakers?

  I need to select records say 2000 from a table with a matching timestamp from c# .net code. Eg: SELECT * FROM ITEMDATA_TABLE WHERE ITEMNAME='Item1' and TimeStamp='2010-04-26 17:15:05.667' The above query has to execute for 2000 items more for the same timestamp. for this we can use SELECT * FROM ITEMDATA_TABLE WHERE ITEMNAME in ('Item1','Item2','Item3','Item4',......) AND TimeStamp='2010-04-26 17:15:05.667' from SQL Server Management Studio. I have tried appending all Item names to one string variable and giving it as a parameter to the stored procedure,but it resulted into a wrong concatenation. How can I do this as a stored procedure executing from the .net code? Can anyone suggest me/correct me in doing this? Thanks & Regards Padma

• Using 50+ 3rd party web services, should I use BizTalk or just C#?

  I'm building a back-end application that needs to fetch data on various schedules from over 50+ 3rd party web services and that number will continue to grow. The data from these services can currently be grouped into 3 types so each response needs to be mapped to 1 of 3 known schemas. Writing custom c# to hit each web service appears to be a management nightmare never mind having all that data mapping in code. The current thinking is build this on top of BizTalk 2009, still a lot of maintenance but at least a well defined platform with mapping/transformation capabilities already. I'm looking for any advise from anyone who might have done this before, does this really buy us anything? I am aware of a lack of polling features in BTS however there are enough work arounds to feel comfortable about the solution. Thanks!

• SharePoint use for web application

  Hi - we are looking at developing a web application that allows users (some subscribed (authenticated) and some not (browsing)). We would like some basic document management, a wiki, a blog etc. and do not expect the app to be heavily used (DB size not an issue at this stage). I require the GUI to be customised to our corporate style and we access to .net development skills which we would like to leverage to develop the application. With this in mind I have the follwoing 3 questions: Is WSS 3.0 / SPF 2010 the correct framework to be building this app on? What are the licensing terms or are these frameworks similar to the .Net framework that once installed on our host server we can use the base services provided to develop our apps on? • Build common interface for two applications(one is in .asp, other in java)

One application in .asp and second application in java. we want to build interface for universal authentication, so that one can access the other application once signed into one application. Both applications are using SQL database, but one is written in .ASP hosted on Windows server while the other is in JAVA hosted on a Linux server. The applications are currently resided on two different servers. requirements: 1)The end user are most likely to access the applications through .ASP first, then reach the 2nd application more like "back office" management system. 2)he JAVA application currently works well with IE web browser, but not very smooth with other browsers such as Firefox. • What is the business case for a dependency injection (DI) framework?

  At my company we want to start using a dependency injection (DI) framework for managing our dependencies. I have some difficulty with explaining the business value of such a framework. Currently I have come up with these reasons. Less source code, delete all the builder patterns in the code. Increase in flexibility. Easier to switch dependencies. Better separation of concern. The framework is responsible for creating instances instead of our code. Has anybody else had to persuade management? How did you do that? What reasons did you use?

• NSIS- Error handling

  I have written an installer and uninstaller in NSIS which creates and drops an sql database, which is working fine. I have written some .bat and .sql files to create and drop the database and then just call these files from NSIS script. My problem is if I keep this database open in SQL Server Management Studio and run the uninstaller ideally it should give an error message that the database is opened. In my case it shows the success message of uninstaller but dosnt drop the database properly. How can I handle this error in NSIS?

• Good ACL implementation in Java

  Hi All. I'm implementing a web based document management system and I'd like to implement ACLs in my system. My formal requirements are hierarchal permissions (documents inherit permissions from their folders) user groups (users can dynamically create groups and associate users with groups). Such groups can have permissions on objects in the system. My code will query permission on objects in two cases: 1. Manipulating a single document 2. Listing all documents where a manipulation is possible The latter requirement seems the achilles heel for Spring Security ACLs (their method seems likely to incur multiple DB hits for each document I manage) Anyone know of another ACL implementation? The app has an document management and the number of document (a field of my domain), need to be manual or automatic, and this choise will be consider in configuration. • SQL Server Express: Failed to add primary key after creating a database table

  Scenario: I have created a database table. And when I tried to add a primary key (using the SQL Server Management Studiio) to the table, it failed with an error message "Saving changes is not permitted. The changes you have made requrie the following tables to be dropped and re-created. You have either made changes to a table that can't be recreated or enabled the option Prevent savign changes that require the table to be re-created." The environment is Windows 7. I have earlier installed it on a Windows XP SP2 and it worked. And yes, my table is empty (freshly created). My current workaround is to run the "Drop and Create" script. The other alternative is to create the primary key before I save the table. Is this a bug or a limitation with the Express version?
