• Failed 11.10 to 12.04 upgrade and drove me crazy!

  Please help me with this! I first tried to upgrade my Ubuntu server from 11.10 to 12.04 thru Upgrade Manager, but never succeeded! Then I tried upgrading thru terminal, which took me ~4 hours as I was warned. When I restarted my computer, my login GUI did not show up at all! (Panic I was!) But when I switched to tty6 and it seemed the upgrade has finished, at least partially and got message Ubuntu 12.04LTS and telling me 12.10 is available. There are bunch of unmet dependencies...."apt-get install -f" may resolve the problem. Then I tried: sudo apt-get -f install, did not succeed! Also I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I got bunch of error message too long to list here. Then I tried: sudo do-release-upgrade still bunch of error message there! There seems a lot trouble with the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 for me. Did I miss anything? Anyway, can I ask how I can get the gnome login GUI back? Thanks a lot! Yifang

• Stop Time Sync Between Host and Guest - VirtualBox

  So I've been googling and I've tried the following commands. I want to stop the virtual machine from having the correct time and just to stick with what time it last recorded. The host operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 and the guest is Windows XP. I've turned time syncing off in XP so it won't do that when I connect to the Internet. However it does appear to take the time from ubuntu and set it as it's own. VBoxManage setextradata XP11 “VBoxInternal/TM/WarpDrivePercentage” 200 vboxmanage setextradata XP11 "VBoxInternal/Devices/VMMDev/0/Config/GetHostTimeDisabled" "1" Both commands haven't work as the time is always set to the exact same as Ubuntu's. I've located the extradata entry in the virtualbox XML file. It states both changes that the commands above are set to make. • Good practice on Visual Studio Solutions

  Hopefully a relativity simple question. I'm starting work on a new internal project to create tractability of repaired devices within the buildings. The database is stored remotely on a webserver, and will be accessed via web API (JSON output) and protected with OAuth. The front end GUI is being done in WPF, and the business code in C#. From this, I see the different layers Presentation/Application/Datastore. There will be code for managing all the authenticated calls to the API, class to represent entities (business objects), classes to construct the entities (business objects), parts for WPF GUI, parts of the WPF viewmodels, and so on. Is it best to create this in a single project, or split them into individual projects? In my heart I say it should be multiple projects. I have done it both ways previously, and found testing to be easier with a single project solution, however with multiple projects then recursive dependencies can crop up. Especially when classes have interfaces to make it easier to test, I've found things can become awkward.

• How to mount a network drive?

  Ok so I'm trying to set-up a home file server. I'm thinking about just setting it up as an FTP server, no particular reason other than I'm familiar with FTP and samba tends to be very frustrating. Basically the set-up I'm going for, is to be-able to create multiple user accounts for the server and restrict or allow access to specific folders on each user. FTP is the only way (that I know of) to accomplish a set-up like that. My question is how can I mount an FTP server as a drive in Ubuntu so that all my applications can access it just like any other driver or folder. An example would be downloading 12.10 via torrent when it comes out, I would like to be able to tell transmission to just download the file straight to my ftp server. I know how to do this in Windows, its actually very easy. But I cant figure it out in Ubuntu. I have tried using the "connect to server" option in nautilus, and it works, but it doesn’t give me the result I want, most applications don’t see the folder, while others can. Also I am open to options other than FTP if anyone has any suggestions. I've looked into FreeNAS but that doesn’t seem to allow me to control the user accounts the way I want to. Then after all is said and done I would still need a way to mount the shares as a drive in Ubuntu. The ability to mount network drives in windows is one of my favourite features, but seeing how Ubuntu is now my daily OS and has been for about 4 years, I really need a way to accomplish the same thing in Ubuntu. Also a GUI would be preferable, seeing as there will be multiple people using this server, I would like it to be as easy as possible. EDIT: this link here seems to be almost exactly what I'm wanting to do, if I could find a GUI that can do this ill be almost set. then I would just need to find a way to hide specific folders from certain users.

• Does lesser wide screen fit better than a large one?

  About 3 weeks ago I changed my job. At the former workplace, I had 2 monitors for doing programming (GUI and core programming). Here, at the place where I am, the administrators gave me a laptop (15.6 inch) and wanted to provide me a wider screen additional to the laptop's one. I said that for now I want to test as it is, with the laptop's screen. I also want to mention, that in the current job I'm not targeted for GUI development. My feeling until now (but it can be just a feeling) is that working on this single not so wide screen, I'm not so weary after a full day work as I was with 2 wide monitors. Does anyone have any recommendations on this problem? Does lesser screens (in my case exclusively 15.6 inch vs 20 inch screens) affect your eyes? If anyone have any knowledge about, please feel free to say what's your opinion. P.S. I think that's a good site for this kind of question. Otherwise, please guide me on what site from StackExchange should I put it. Thanks.

• How to handle notifications to several partial views of the same model?

  I am working on refactoring an old simulation of a Turing machine. The application uses a class that contains the state and the logic of program execution, and several panels to display the tape representation and show the state, messages, and the GUI controls (start, stop, program listing, ...). I would like to refactor it using the MVC architecture that was not used originaly: the Frame is the only way to get access to the different panels and there is also a strong coupling between the "engine" class and the GUI updates in the way of frame.displayPanel.state.setText("halted"); or frame.outputPanel.messages.append("some thing"); It looks to me that I should put the state related code into an observable model class and make the different panels observers. My problem is that the java Observable class only provides a global notification to the Observers, while I would prefer not to refresh every Observers everytime, but only when the part that specificaly observe has changed. I am thinking of implementing myself several vectors of listeners (for the state / position, for the output messages, ...) but I feel like reinventing the wheel. I though also about adding some flags that the observers could check like isNewMessageAvailable(), hasTapeMoved(), etc but it sounds also approximative design. BTW, is it ok to keep the fetch / execute loop into the model or should I move it in another place? We can think in a theorical ideal way as I am completely revamping this small application.

• Configuring network to set wlan0 as primary

  I recently had to rebuild my pc and decided to go for ubuntu 14.04. I think the mistake I made was I started from a 12.04 install disk instead of the 12.10 disk I'd used previously and when given the option set my primary connection as ethernet (because the wireless option didn't work). After upgrading to 14.04 etc, I managed to get the wireless working, or more using steps like ifconfig -a and the likes I managed to prove that the wireless card etc. is all installed and working. However every time I boot without a hard wired connection plugged in I get the message "waiting for network configuration". I can then once it's booted without a network get my wirless working using sudo ifconfig wlan0 up iwlist wlan0 scan This seems to kick the wireless module into life and it appears in the GUI and I can then select a network, however all the options like edit network and disconnect etc are all greyed out. What I would like of course is if the WLAN0 was just set as my primary default network so I've been looking for a solution to this and it would seem that I need to adjust the old /etc/network/interfaces file but when I try to do so using the sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces command I, well I simply have no idea what I'm doing. Other than that typing :q! gets me out of there before I do to much damage! As far as I can tell (by navigating to the file in the GUI) the output of my /etc/network/interfaces is as follows: (obviously not including the " in each line that's just to break the heading rule of the #) "# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system "# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). "# The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback "# The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp If this is the case then this clearly doesn't contain what it should do but I don't how to fix it. Nor do I even know if I'm on the right track. Any help would be appreciated thanks :)

• Dual monitor, permission issue

  I had a dual monitor configuration going on for quite some time. One day, after moving the computer to another location and reconnecting everything, it changed such that I saw everything in double (being very much sober), I think it's called the 'mirrors' config. Anyway, from there on, there was nothing to be done through the system settings gui to change it back, as it wouldn't allow me to save any modification. The error I get when clicking 'save' is : "Failed to create file /home/me/monitors.xml.xxxxxx. Permission denied", xxxx being a random code, changing everytime. However, I can save all the configurations I want just fine by using the terminal, in my case: xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --right-of VGA-1 So I do have a workaround and this is therefore a question more out of curiosity. What could possibly have changed to make it impossible to do it through the gui and still letting me change the config using xrandr without being root? I'm having a hard time believing it could have anything to do with disconnecting/reconnecting the monitors... Any idea? Thanks !

  I have a desktop PC which I built a while back. It has an Athlon XP 2500+, 2.5GB RAM, and an Nvidia (PNY Verto) Geforce 6200. I removed the CD drive to add another hard drive so I install from a USB flash drive. When I try to install 12.04 it seems to work just fine. The GUI boots up and wifi even connects to my router. I go through the language screen, the partition screen, the keyboard screen, the location screen, and the import my Windows settings screen just fine. But as soon as I'm done with all that the next screen goes black and displays this message: drm:[drm_crtc_helper_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC6] Since the GUI starts just fine earlier during the install, I know I shouldn't be having any display problems, but I am. How do I get Ubuntu to install properly? I have four IDE hard drives, all Western Digital: a 250GB, a 160GB, a 40GB occupied by Windows XP, and a 120GB that I'm trying to use for Ubuntu. 3GB of the 120GB drive are formatted for swap. • Cannot get libcurl-devl on OpenSUSE 11.3

  I have a server running OpenSUSE 11.3 that I can't really upgrade to a newer version of OpenSUSE (it's a managed appliance). I have some PHP shell scripts that need to run on the server that have a dependency on both cURL and OpenSSL. I discovered that the PHP 5.3.3 binaries on the server did not include OpenSSL but did include cURL I downloaded the latest PHP sources, extracted them, and ran ./configure --with-openssl --with-zlib --with-bcmath --with-curl --with-readline --with-libxml --enable-sockets This failed: the configure script complained that it couldn't find cURL: checking for cURL support... yes checking for cURL in default path... not found configure: error: Please reinstall the libcurl distribution - easy.h should be in /include/curl/ I tried to install libcurl by running zypper install libcurl-devl This failed too: doom:~/phpworksite/php-5.5.15 # zypper install libcurl-devl Loading repository data... • Running two wsgi applications on the same server gdal org exception with apache2/modwsgi

  I'm trying to run two wsgi applications, one django and the other tilestache using the same server. The tilestache server accesses the db via django to query the db. In the process of serving tiles it performs a transform on the incoming bbox, and in this process hit's the following error.   We (the tech I work with and myself) live in a remote northern town where Internet access is somewhat of a luxury, and bandwidth is quite limited. Here, overage charges ranging from few hundreds, to few thousands of dollars a month, is not uncommon. I myself incur regular monthly charges just through my regular Internet usage at home (I am allowed 10G for $60CAD!) As part of my work, I have found myself involved with several hotels that are feeling this. I know that I can come up with something to solve this problem, but I am relatively new to system administration and I don't want my dreams to overcome reality. So, I pass these ideas on to you, those with much more experience than I, in hopes you will share some of your thoughts and concerns. This system must be cost effective, yes the charges are high here, but the trust in technology is the lowest I've ever seen. Must be capable of helping client reduce their usage (squid) Allow a limited (throughput and total usage) amount of free Internet, as this is often franchise policy. Allow a user to track their bandwidth usage Allow (optional) higher speed and/or usage for an additional charge. This fee can be obtained at the front desk on checkout and should not require the use of PayPal or Credit Card. Unfortunately some franchises have ridiculous policies that require the use of a third party remote service to authenticate guests to your network. This means WPA is out, and it also means that I do not auth before Internet usage, that will be their job. However, I do require the ABILITY to perform authentication for Internet access if a hotel does not have this policy. I will still have to track bandwidth (under a guest account by default) and provide the same limiting, however the guest often will require a complete 'unlimited' access, in terms of existence, not throughput. Provide firewalling capabilities for hotels that have nothing, Office, and Guest network segregation (some of these guys are running their office on the guest network, with no encryption, and a simple TOS to get on!) Prevent guests from connecting to other guests, however provide a means to allow this to happen. IE. Each guest connects to a page and allows the other guest, this writes a iptables rule (with python-netfilter) and allows two rooms to play a game, for instance. My thoughts on how to implement this. One decent box (we'll call it a router now) with a lot of ram, and 3 NIC's: Internet Office Guests (AP's + In Room Ethernet) Router Firewall Rules Guest can talk to router only, through which they are routed to where they need to go, including Internet services. Office can be used to bridge Office to Internet if an existing solution is not in place, otherwise, it simply works for a network accessible web (webmin+python-webmin?) interface. Router Software: OpenVZ provides virtualization for a few services I don't really trust. Squid, FreeRADIUS and Apache. The only service directly accessible to guests is Apache. Apache has mod_wsgi and django, because I can write quickly using django and my needs are low. It also potentially has the FreeRADIUS mod, but there seems to be some caveats with this. Firewall rules are handled on the router with iptables. Webmin (or a custom django app maybe) provides abstracted control over any features that the staff may need to access. Python, if you haven't guessed it's the language I feel most comfortable in, and I use it for almost everything. And finally, has this been done, is it a overly massive project not worth taking on for one guy, and/or is there some tools I'm missing that could be making my life easier? For the record, I am fairly good with Python, but not very familiar with many other languages (I can struggle through PHP, it's a cosmetic issue there). I am also an avid linux user, and comfortable with config files and command line. Thank you for your time, I look forward to reading your responses.   Earlier today I started to upgrade to 13.10 only to return much much later and notice that the update manager was still running. It seems to be frozen and I am reluctant to hit ctrl+C. I can't launch nautilus using the icon on the launcher. When I try to run it via the terminal, this is what happens: $ nautilus Could not register the application: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such interface `org.gtk.Actions' on object at path /org/gnome/Nautilus My printers aren't showing up when I attempt to print. I don't know whether these a symptoms of the same problem. Should I let the update manage continue to run, or should I shut it down? • How to Organize a Programming Language Club

  I previously noted that we started a language club at work.  You know, I searched around but I couldn’t find a copy of the How to Organize a Programming Language Club Handbook. Maybe it’s sold out?  Yes, Stack Overflow has quite a bit of information on how to learn and teach new languages and there’s also a good number of online tutorials which provide language introductions but I was interested in group learning.  After   two months of meetings, I present to you the Unofficial How to Organize a Programming Language Club Handbook.  1. Gauge interest. Start by surveying prospects. “Excuse me, smart-developer-whom-I-work-with-and-I-think-might-be-interested-in-learning-a-new-coding-language-with-me. Are you interested in learning a new language with me?” If you’re lucky, you work with a bunch of really smart folks who aren’t shy about teaching/learning in a group setting and you’ll have a collective interest in no time.  Simply suggesting the idea is the only effort required.  If you don’t work in this type of environment, maybe you should consider a new place of employment.  2. Make it official. Send out a “Welcome to the Club” email: There’s been talk of folks itching to learn new languages – Python, Scala, F# and Haskell to name a few.  Rather than taking on new languages alone, let’s learn in the open.  That’s right.  Let’s start a languages club.  We’ll have everything a real club needs – secret handshake, goofy motto and a high-and-mighty sense that we’re better than everybody else. T-shirts?  Hell YES!  Anyway, I’ve thrown this idea around the office and no one has laughed at me yet so please consider this your very official invitation to be in THE club. [Insert your ideas about how the club might be run, solicit feedback and suggestions, ask what other folks would like to get out the club, comment about club hazing practices and talk up the T-shirts even more. Finally, call out the languages you are interested in learning and ask the group for their list.] 3.  Send out invitations to the first meeting.  Don’t skimp!  Hallmark greeting cards for everyone.  Personalized.  Hearts over the I’s and everything.  Oh, and be sure to include the list of suggested languages with vote count.  Here the list of languages we are interested in: Python 5 Ruby 4 Objective-C 3 F# 2 Haskell 2 Scala 2 Ada 1 Boo 1 C# 1 Clojure 1 Erlang 1 Go 1 Pi 1 Prolog 1 Qt 1 4.  At the first meeting, there must be cake.  Lots of cake. And you should tackle some very important questions: Which language should we start with?  You can immediately go with the top vote getter or you could do as we did and designate each person to provide a high-level review of each of the proposed languages over the next two weeks.  After all presentations are completed, vote on the language. Our high-level review consisted of answers to a series of questions. Decide how often and where the group will meet.  We, for example, meet for a brown bag lunch every Wednesday.  Decide how you’re going to learn.  We determined that the best way to learn is to just dive in and write code.  After choosing our first language (Python), we talked about building an application, or performing coding katas, but we ultimately choose to complete a series of Project Euler problems.  We kept it simple – each member works out the same two problems each week in preparation of a code review the following Wednesday. 5.  Code, Review, Learn.  Prior to the weekly meeting, everyone uploads their solutions to our internal wiki.  Each Project Euler problem has a dedicated page.  In the meeting, we use a really fancy HD projector to show off each member’s solution.  It is very important to use an HD projector.  Again, don’t skimp!  Each code author speaks to their solution, everyone else comments, applauds, points fingers and laughs, etc.  As much as I’ve learned from solving the problems on my own, I’ve learned at least twice as much at the group code review.  6.  Rinse. Lather. Repeat.  We’ve hosted the language club for 7 weeks now.  The first meeting just set the stage.  The next two meetings provided a review of the languages followed by a first language selection.  The remaining meetings focused on Python and Project Euler problems.  Today we took a vote as to whether or not we’re ready to switch to another language and/or another problem set.  Pretty much everyone wants to stay the course for a few more weeks at least.  Until then, we’ll continue to code the next two solutions, review and learn. Again, we’ve been having a good time with the programming language club.  I’m glad it got off the ground.  What do you think?  Would you be interested in a language club?  Any suggestions on what we might do better?

• Cloud Computing Architecture Patterns: Don’t Focus on the Client

  Normally I try to put topics in the positive in other words "Do this" not "Don't do that". Sometimes its clearer to focus on what *not* to do. Popular development processes often start with screen mockups, or user input descriptions. In a scale-out pattern like Cloud Computing on Windows Azure, that's the wrong place to start. Start with the Data    Instead, I recommend that you start with the data that a process requires. That data might be temporary or persisted, but starting with the data and its requirements helps to define not only the storage engine you need but also drives everything from security to the integrity of the application. For instance, assume the requirements show that the user must enter their phone number, and that this datum is used in a contact management system further down the application chain. For that datum, you can determine what data type you need (U.S. only or International?) the security requirements, whether it needs ACID compliance, how it will be searched, indexed and so on. From one small data point you can extrapolate out your options for storing and processing the data. Here's the interesting part, which begins to break the patterns that we've used for decades: all of the data doesn't have the same requirements. The phone number might be best suited for a list, or an element, or a string, with either BASE or ACID requirements, based on how it is used. That means we don't have to dump everything into XML, an RDBMS, a NoSQL engine, or a flat file exclusively. In fact, one record might use all of those depending on the use-case requirements. Next Is Data Management  With the data defined, we can move on to how to store the data. Again, the requirements now dictate whether we need a full relational calculus or set-based operations, or we can choose another method based on the requirements for the data. And breaking another pattern its OK to store in more than once, in more than one location. We do this all the time for reporting systems and Business Intelligence systems, so this is a pattern we need to think about even for OLTP data. Move to Data Transport How does the data get around? We can use a connection-based method, sending the data along a transport to the storage engine, but in some cases we may want to use a cache, a queue, the Service Bus, or Complex Event Processing. Finally, Data Processing Most RDBMS engines, NoSQL, and certainly Big Data engines not only store data, but can process and manipulate it as well. Its doubtful that you'll calculate that phone number right? Well, if you're the phone company, you most certainly will. And so we see that even once we've chosen the data type, storage and engine, the same element can have different computing requirements based on how it is used. Sure, We Need A Front-End At Some Point Not all data is entered by human hands in fact most data isn't. We don't really need a Graphical User Interface (GUI) we need some way for a GUI to get data into and out of the systems listed earlier.   But when we do need to allow users to enter or examine data, that should be left to the GUI that best fits the device the user has. Ever tried to use an application designed for a web browser on a phone? Or one designed for a tablet on a phone? Its usually quite painful. The siren song of "We'll just write one interface for all devices" is strong, and has beguiled many an unsuspecting architect. But they just don't work out.   Instead, focus on the data, its transport and processing. Create API calls or a message system that allows for resilient transport to the device or interface, and let it do what it does best.
