• Is wikipedia a valuable resource for studying data structures? (can we call it complete?)

  Can I depend on wikipedia to learn data structures fully using the list of data structures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_data_structures and the links they refer to? The same question for algorithms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_algorithm_general_topics ?... What's after learning algorithms and data structures? Specializing in a certain field of algorithms such as computer graohics, memory management...etc? or what could be the plan for mastering programming after knowing the language syntax and the background about program design and programming logic? I asked about wikipedia because i would like to find a complete resource or are least a resource which would be enough for the field of data structures instead of searching for separate articles in different places in other words an alternative to books which may even be more complete.

Concurrency: How do you approach the design and debug the implementation? Given that each user's computers may have different performance characteristics with respect to calculations, memory, disk I/O bandwidth and network I/O bandwidth, and that it is difficult to implement an automated self-tuning system in your software, how much configurability should we give to the end-users so that they can find ways (by trial-and-error?) to improve our software's efficiency? • Structure vs. programming

  Is it bad that I often find myself spending more time on program structure than actually writing code inside methods? Is this common? I feel I spend more time laying the foundation than actually building the house (metaphorically). While I understand that without a good foundation the house will cave in, but does it legitimately need to take half of the project to finalize code structure? I understand design patterns, and I know where to go if I need help on choosing one, but often I find myself doubting my own choices.

  Currently I am working on a customize device which has Ubuntu 12.10. Now I have to restructure the screen of that device. I have added sample design of the screen. We are getting this screen when we start the device. How can I achive this. I know for this I have make changes in many configuration files of ubuntu. But I don't know how to start and in which files I have to make changes. So that I need some guidelines for this? and we are using lightdm as display manager. • Is JQuery or Javascript are capable for image processing?

  My plan is to develop a web based application in the future. I think, i can named it "Booth Reservation System" for the Events companies here in our country. One of the main functionality of the system and the most tricky part/ difficult part is the user can upload a "floor plan"(the design of the area were the booth is located in any image format) then the user can select on the specific location on the floor plan to reserve the booth. Also, the user can create floor plan on the system as another functionality of the system. What do you think? What programming language that i can use to accomplished the system? thanks!

• Verification as QA - makes sense?

  Preparing my thesis, I found another interesting discrepancy. While some books say verification it terms of static analysis of work products is quality control (looking for defects), other say it is actually quality assurance because the process of checking is decreasing the probability of real defects when these deliverables will be used for product manufacture. I hesitate as both seems to be correct: it is a way of checking for defects (deviation from requirements, design flaws etc.) so it looks like quality control, but also it is a process which does not have to be done and if done, can yield better quality.

I have been programming for at least 10 years now, have made hundreds of websites but I have just recently started getting into Design and the SEO side of sites, sad that I have been overlooking these for so many years. My question, I would like to build a site that targets many different key words for the search engines, for an example. For best Search Engine results, how could I get the most search engine traffic to all these ares? • Best gui toolkit to use for creating 3D board game

  I have created a board game using Java and Swing - using GridLayout and various other apis. It works properly but the UI looks very very simple. I would want couple of animations like tilting the GridLayoutat any angle. There are pawns on boxes of the GridLayout that I want to be animated when somebody clicks on it. I'm not sure of the right GUI toolkit to use for this. Swing repaint is possible to a limit and cannot be used for a lot of animation and graphics. And I realized after creating the game that Swing is probably not a good tool to create games. Could anybody suggest a better framework to use that I can use it in Eclipse with Java? I was thinking of JavaFX or tools like Adobe Flash or Adobe Air. Any suggestions please?

• What are options for 3rd Party Centralized Software Settings Management?

  I am an architect in an enterprise looking to build a SaaS solution. Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

• Observer pattern for unpredictable observation time

  I have a situation where objects are created at unpredictable times. Some of these objects are created before an important event, some after. If the event already happened, I make the object execute stuff right away. If the event is forthcoming, I make the object observe the event. When the event triggers, the object is notified and executes the same code. if (subject.eventAlreadyHappened()) { observer.executeStuff(); } else { subject.subscribe(observer); } Is there another design pattern to wrap or even replace this observer pattern? I think it looks a little dirty to me.

• bad practice to create a print friendly page to remove the use of pdfs?

  the company I work for has a one page invoice that uses the library tcpdf. they wanted to do some design changes that I found are just incredibly difficult for setting up in .pdf format. using html/css I could easily create the page and have it print very nicely, but I have a feeling that I am over looking something. is it a good practice to set up a page just for printing? and if not, is it at least better than putting out a ugly .pdf? I could also use the CSS inline so that if they wanted to download it and open it they could.

I've spent a lot of time reading about, and tinkering with Liferay but am concerned that it doesn't cover two of my three major concerns I need to have many sites with individual domains HTML/CSS designers need to be able to design the website templates, look and feel, and layouts in their own tools without having to worry about writing scripts Site and page building APIs must be understandable so that a custom builder interface can be created and harness the CMS as opposed to hacking it Liferay nails the first bullet point, but the second two appear to be unsolved. Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

• How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

  I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

  So finally after reading a lot, I have understood that the difference between BDD and TDD is between T & B. But coming from basic TDD background, what I used to was, first write unittest for database models write test for views (at this point start with integration test as well, along with unittests) write more integration tests for testing UI stuff. What would be a correct way to approach BDD. Say I have a simple blog application. Given : When a user logs in. He should be shown list of all his posts.   I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? • Where do I find display brightness controls in Lubuntu?

  I'm looking for a control to be able to change my standard display brightness in Lubuntu. I've tried How do I set default display brightness? but my system settings does not include a Screen option. I've also tried Power Manager, Monitor Settings and Screensaver under Preferences and couldn't spot anything to control this option. The function key mappings (this is a laptop) work to change the brightness, but I'm looking for a UI option as the laptop is physically set up to be mouse-based (keyboard is hard to access with how we've got it set up).
