  Hello I've got an application which serves an rss feed of headlines and I need to provide this rss feed to other consumers. I don't want to provide the rss directly from my server though, due to limited server resources, so I need to proxy (cache) it through some service which will handle the load. Assuming the rss feed URL of my application is http://example.com/rss I initially provided my consumers with the url http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/feed/load?v=1.0&q=http%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Frss which solved my server load problem but introduced a liveness problem. The headlines are minutes to hours late from the actual feed (haven't exactly measured how much late). I've also tried distributing through feedburner so the url became something like http://feeds.feedburner.com/example123?format=xml but the liveness problem still exists. Is there a public and free solution for this problem? Anything below 5 minutes of liveness delay would be totally acceptable. thanks

  In Hibernate HQL, how would you query through a many-to-many association. If I have a Company with multiple ProductLines and other companies can offer these same product lines, I have a Company entity, a ProductLine entity and an association table CompanyProductLine. In SQL, I can get what I need like this: select * from company c where c.companyId in (select companyId from companyProductLine cpl, productline pl where cpl.productLineId = pl.productLineId and pl.name= 'some value'); My problem sees to lie with the association I defined in the Company.hbm.xml file: <set name="productLines" cascade="save-update" table="CompanyProductLine"> <key column="companyId"/> <many-to-many class="com.foo.ProductLine" column="productLineId" /> </set> Any HQL I seem to come up with will throw a: 'expecting 'elements' or 'indices"' Hibernate exception. • jQuery ajax request to php, how to return plain text only

  I am making an ajax request to a php page and I cannot for the life of me get it to just return plain text. $.ajax({ type: 'GET', url: '/shipping/test.php', cache: false, dataType: 'text', data: myData, success: function(data){ console.log(data) } }); in test.php I am including this script to get UPS rates. I am then calling the function with $rate = ups($dest_zip,$service,$weight,$length,$width,$height); I am doing echo $rate; at the bottom of test.php. When viewed in a browser shows the rate, that's great. But when I request the page via ajax I get a bunch of XML. Pastie here: http://pastie.org/1416142 My question is, how do I get it so I can just return the plain text string from the ajax call, where the result data will be a number? • RelativeLayout - positioning a View under a ViewGroup

  I have the following structure defined in an xml layout file. <RelativeLayout android:id="@+id/mainLayout" xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <FrameLayout android:id="@+id/frame" android:layout_centerInParent="true" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" ></FrameLayout> <Button android:id="@+id/button" android:layout_below="@id/frame" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> </RelativeLayout> The FrameLayout is positioned correctly in the center of its parent. But the Button isn't getting positioned under it. Instead it's displaying in the top left corner. Am I doing something incorrectly or is this a bug with RelativeLayout?

• Base64 Encoded Data - DB or Filesystem

  I have a new program that will be generating a lot of Base64 encoded audio and image data. This data will be served via HTTP in the form of XML and the Base64 data will be inline. These files will most likely break 20MB and higher. Would it be more efficient to serve these files directly from the filesystem or would it be feasible to store the data in a MySQL database? Caching will be set up but overall unnecessary because it is likely that this data will be purged shortly after it is created and served. i know that storing binary data in the DB is frowned upon in most circumstances but since this will all be character data I want to see what the consensus is. As of now, I am leaning toward storing them in the filesystem for efficiency reasons but if it is feasible to store them in a database it would be much easier to manage the data.

• Which faces technology for use with GlassFish 2.1 and NetBeans 6.7?

  I'm running GlassFish 2.1 and using NetBeans 6.7. I'd like to create a web interface to my data using JSF 1.2. Trouble is, I'm not sure which 'faces' technology to learn (that includes some good documentation). JBoss/RichFaces seem pretty good on documentation, but I'm using GlassFish. Any thoughts?   I am developing a Java Desktop Application. This app needs a configuration to be started. For this, I want to supply a defaultConfig.properties or defaultConfig.xml file with the application so that If user doesn't select any configuration, then the application will start with the help of defaultConfig file. But I am afraid of my application crash if the user accidentally edit the defaultConfig file. So Is there any mechanism through which I can check before the start of the application that whether the config file has changed or not. How other applications (out in the market) deal with this type of situation in which their application depends on a configuration file? If the user edited the config file accidentally or intentionally, then the application won't run in future unless he re-installs the application.

  I have a project where I create WiX (Windows Installer for XML) files, when they are not already present. It is working perfectly. Now I want to expand it to add more functionality. I was wondering if there is a way to create a Visual Studio project programmatically? This project is run as part of our nightly build process, and when a new wix file is needed it is created, but I want to have everything in place when the build is finished so if necessary you can just open the project in Visual Studio and start editing. Am I dreaming outside the realm of possibility or no? Any nudge in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

• Hibernate without primary keys generated by db?

  I'm building a data warehouse and want to use InfiniDB as the storage engine. However, it doesn't allow primary keys or foreign key constraints (or any constraints for that matter). Hibernate complains "The database returned no natively generated identity value" when I perform an insert. Each table is relational, and contains a unique integer column that was previously used as the primary key - I want to keep that, but just not have the constraint in the db that the column is the primary key. I'm assuming the problem is that Hibernate expects the db to return a generated key. • maven tomcat plugin with mysql driver in $catalina_home/lib

  Hi everybody, i am trying to use a container managed datasource (via context.xml) in tomcat. The corresponding jar file needs to go in $catalina_home/lib, otherwise tomcat can't find it. (not in webapp/WEB-INF/lib, because it is managed by the webserver, not by the application itself) the problem is: I am using maven with the maven-tomcat-plugin, so I don't have a $catalina_home (everything is distributed in my .m2 -repository). So the question is: how can I add the mysql driver jar to the classpath of the tomcat server (mvn tomcat:run)? thanks a lot, gerolf.

  I've added the appropriate XML to my PLIST ("audio key") and my app did stream audio in the background. I installed the app on to an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4 via Ad Hoc distribution. I played audio in my app and pressed the home key. It was still playing. Then I switched computers and reset my provisioning profile. I recompiled and exported with a generic provisioning profile. I sent the app to someone else to test on their 3GS via Ad Hoc and the app does not work in the background.

  We have Tomcat 6 connecting to a Win2k3 Server running AD. We want ANY user under Security Groups OU to have access to the application and not just the CN. Tomcat does not search OU's and it just searches CN's in our case.   I would like to animate movement on a SurfaceView . Ideally I would like to also be notified once the animation had finished. For example: I might have a car facing North. If I wanted to animate it so that it faces South for a duration of 500ms, how could I do that? I am using a SurfaceView so all animation must be handled manually, I don't think I can use XML or the android Animator classes. Also, I would like to know the best way to animate something continuously inside a SurfaceView (ie. a walk cycle)

  My company is planning to implement a solution in multiple applications that will help to validate mailing addresses at the point of data entry. We're using UPS's Extended Address Validation (XAV) web service API to validate the addresses. Our current plan is to build a .NET web service that can be used to communicate between our applications and the UPS API. We have applications in VB6, classic ASP, and .NET 2.0, so we'd like to implement a solution that can be easily consumed by each of these programming environments. What are our (Microsoft) options for designing a web service that can be consumed by multiple clients? In particular, is there a way to design a single web service that can respond with JSON (in case we want to validate our web page using javascript) in addition to XML? I'm new to designing web services and want to make sure we consider all of our options. I've heard terms like asmx, WCF, OData, etc., but I don't know which frameworks will support what we're trying to do and where to start.

  I have a ServiceInstall component in a WiX installer where I have a requirement to either start auto or demand depending on parameters passed into the MSI. So the Xml element in question is <ServiceInstall Vital="yes" Name="My Windows Service" Type="ownProcess" Account="[SERVICEUSERDOMAIN]\[SERVICEUSERNAME]" DisplayName="My Service" Password="[SERVICEUSERPASSWORD]" Start="demand" Interactive="no" Description="Something interesting here" Id="Service" ErrorControl="ignore"></ServiceInstall> WiX will not allow using a PArameter for the Start attribute, so Im stuck with completely suplicating the component with a condition, eg/ <Component Id="ServiceDemand" Guid="{E204A71D-B0EB-4af0-96DB-9823605050C7}" > <Condition>SERVICESTART="demand"</Condition> ... and completely duplicating the whole component, with a different setting for Start and a different Condition. Anyone know of a more elegant solution? One where I don;t have to maintain 2 COmponents whjich do exactly the same thing except the Attribute for Start?
