Using java to create a logistic model - arrays and properties

I'm currently trying to create a java model that will solve a problem we have. On a voluntary expedition each week we have some people leaving and some new people arriving. Accommodation is in tents. The tents sleep different numbers of people and certain rules apply. Males and females cannot be mixed and volunteers can be one of four types - school children/ research assistants/ scientific staff/ school teachers So types of volunteer and sexes cannot be mixed. Each week the manager spends hours trying to work this out so I've offered to make this model to keep my coding skills up. At present I'm working with arrays. Each tent is a 2D array [4][x] where x is the number of people it sleeps (each person sleeping there has 4 attributes). Each person is a 1D array with 4 attributes [4]. The idea is to check where people can go, cause the minimum movement for people staying on and solve this logistic problem. Does anyone have any better suggestions as to how to solve this? At present I'm finding it necessary to write a lot of code setting up and querying arrays. Any help is appreciated.

Core Data object into an NSDictionary with possible nil objects

I have a core data object that has a bunch of optional values. I'm pushing a table view controller and passing it a reference to the object so I can display its contents in a table view. Because I want the table view displayed a specific way, I am storing the values from the core data object into an array of dictionaries then using the array to populate the table view. This works great, and I got editing and saving working properly. (i'm not using a fetched results controller because I don't have anything to sort on) The issue with my current code is that if one of the items in the object is missing, then I end up trying to put nil into the dictionary, which won't work. I'm looking for a clean way to handle this, I could do the following, but I can't help but feeling like there's a better way. *passedEntry is the core data object handed to the view controller when it is pushed, lets say it contains firstName, lastName, and age, all optional. if ([passedEntry firstName] != nil) { [dictionary setObject:[passedEntry firstName] forKey:@"firstName"] } else { [dictionary setObject:@"" forKey:@"firstName"] } And so on. This works, but it feels kludgy, especially if I end up adding more items to the core data object down the road.

Experience says that using WSDL-SOAP based webservice for internal consumption is an overkill. There are too many service-based POJO classes that when let into the system complicates it way too much. One option would be use adapter pattern, map the request/response objects to internal domain classes and . But is it even required? Is there a better approach? What are your suggestions?

Parsing data from txt file in J2ME

Basically I'm creating an indoor navigation system in J2ME. I've put the location details in a .txt file i.e. Locations names and their coordinates. Edges with respective start node and end node as well as the weight (length of the node). I put both details in the same file so users dont have to download multiple files to get their map working (it could become time consuming and seem complex). So what i did is to seperate the deferent details by typing out location Names and coordinates first, After that I seperated that section from the next section which is the edges by drawing a line with multiple underscores. Now the problem I'm having is parsing the different details into seperate arrays by setting up a command (while manually tokenizing the input stream) to check wether the the next token is an underscore. If it is, (in pseudocode terms), move to the next line in the stream, create a new array and fill it up with the next set of details. I found a some explanation/code HERE that does something similar but still parses into one array, although it manually tokenizes the input. Any ideas on what to do? Java Download Concurrent Data

Hi, i'm developing an app which download map tiles around different places in a city. To do this, i have one thread for each place in which i select the tiles and create a thread to download each. Well, the question is how to avoid creating a thread for a tile that already exists in the thread pool. Should not just check if the file exists, since it is possible that the thread for that tile already exists (other place already need that tile) but the file has not been created- Any idea? Thanks

I would like to make a cycle over the following elements: [1,2,11,12,21,22,111,112,121,122,....,222222] or for example [1,2,3,11,12,13,21,22,23,31,32,33,111,112,113,... 333333333] How can I make it in Java? In my particular case I use 4 digits (1,2,3,4) and the length of the last number can be from 1 to 10. I managed to do it in Python and PHP. In the first case I used list over lists. avoiding enums as interface identifiers c++ OOP

Hi I'm working on a plugin framework using dynamic loaded shared libraries which is based on Eclipse's (and probally other's) extension-point model. All plugins share similar properties (name, id, version etc) and each plugin could in theory satisfy any extension-point. The actual plugin (ie Dll) handling is managed by another library, all I am doing really is managing collections of interfaces for the application. I started by using an enum PluginType to distinguish the different interfaces, but I have quickly realised that using template functions made the code far cleaner and would leave the grunt work up to the compiler, rather than forcing me to use lots of switch {...} statements. The only issue is where I need to specify like functionality for class members - most obvious example is the default plugin which provides a particular interface. A Settings class handles all settings, including the default plugin for an interface. ie Skin newSkin = settings.GetDefault<ISkin>(); How do I store the default ISkin in a container without resorting to some other means of identifying the interface? As I mentioned above, I currently use a std::map<PluginType, IPlugin> Settings::defaults member to achieve this (where IPlugin is an abstract base class which all plugins derive from. However my OS file system has a limit on the number of sub directories, meaning storing the original folder structure is not going to work. Suggestions? Map the URL to some filename so can store flatly? Or just shove it in a database like sqlite to avoid file system limitations?

PHP Game weapon accuracy

I'm trying to come up with a way for players to fire their weapons and only hit for a certain percentage. For example, one gun can only hit 70% of the time while another only hits 34% of the time. So far all I could come up with is weighted arrays. Whenever they click on a posting, the posting's id gets stored in a cookie and displays it in the recent view box. Unable to get set intersection to work

Sorry for the double post, I will update this question if I can't get things to work :) I am trying to compare two files. I will list the two file content: File 1 File 2 "d.complex.1" "d.complex.1" 1 4 5 5 48 47 65 21 d.complex.10 d.complex.10 46 6 21 46 109 121 192 192 TI am trying to compare the contents of the two file but not in a trivial way. I will explain what I want with an example. If you observe the file content I have typed above, the d.complex.1 of file_1 has "5" similar to d.complex.1 in file_2; the same d.complex.1 in file_1 has nothing similar to d.complex.10 in file_2. What I am trying to do is just to print out those d.complex. which has nothing in similar with the other d.complex. Consider the d.complex. as a heading if you want. But all I am trying is compare the numbers below each d.complex. and if nothing matches, I want that particular d.complex. from both files to be printed. If even one number is present in both d.complex. of both files, I want it to be rejected. My Code: The method I chose to achieve this was to use sets and then do a difference. kQuery : Trying to find a specific instance of a class by number

Basically I have a few instance of the class "menu-item" which when clicked call the click function via jQuery and bring up a video. Instead of giving each on an id as well as a class I am trying to find which instance of the class was clicked (1, 2, 3, etc).
