• Strange port forwarding problem

  I've got a strange port forwarding problem. The port forwarding to my internal webserver (10.0.0.10 on Port 80) works without a problem but the port forwarding to a windows server (10.0.0.15) on port 3389 doesn't work. The port 3389 is open. • Column order can matter

  Ordinarily, column order of a SQL statement does not matter. Select a,b,c from table will produce the same execution plan as   Select c,b,a from table However, sometimes it can make a difference.   Consider this statement (maxdop is used to make a simpler plan and has no impact to the main point):   select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc from sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) If you look at the execution plan, you will see similar to this That is three sorts.  One for RownAsc,  one for RownDesc and the final one for the ‘Order by’ clause.  Sorting is an expensive operation and one that should be avoided if possible.  So with this in mind, it may come as some surprise that the optimizer does not re-order operations to group them together when the incoming data is in a similar (if not exactly the same) sorted sequence.  A simple change to swap the RownAsc and RownDesc columns to produce this statement : select SalesOrderID, CustomerID, OrderDate, ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate Desc) as RownDesc , ROW_NUMBER() over (Partition By CustomerId order by OrderDate asc) as RownAsc from Sales.SalesOrderHeader order by CustomerID,OrderDateoption(maxdop 1) Will result a different and more efficient query plan with one less sort. The optimizer, although unable to automatically re-order operations, HAS taken advantage of the data ordering if it is as required.  This is well worth taking advantage of if you have different sorting requirements in one statement. Try grouping the functions that require the same order together and save yourself a few extra sorts.

• PHP MYSQL loop to check if LicenseID Values are contained in mysql DB [closed]

  I have some troubles to find the right loop to check if some values are contained in mysql DB. I'm making a software and I want to add license ID. Each user has x keys to use. Now when the user start the client, it invokes a PHP page that check if the Key sent in the POST method is stored in DB or not. If that key isn't store than I need to check the number of his keys. If it's than X I'll ban him otherwise i add the new keys in the DB. I'm new with PHP and MYSQL. • Why does a pdf file download result in varying bytes logged, all with sc-status 200

  I have a mojoportal CMS installation on an IIS7 server where users are reporting problems downloading a pdf file. It always downloads fine for me and most others, either displaying in browser or in Adobe Reader. Using logparser to query the IIS logs, all the responses are status 200 (OK) or 304 (Not modified), but the bytes sent vary quite a bit. Sometimes zero, some 211, some about half the full file size of 27059, and lots in between. Plenty show the full size of 27059. Do these other entries for smaller byte counts represent errors of some kind, correlating with the problems reported? Is this likely to be a browser/client issue or a server side problem? If there is any other info that would be helpful let me know. This is a shared hosting server though so I am somewhat limited in what I can dig into on the server.

• The one feature that would make me invest in SSIS 2012

  This week I was invited my Microsoft to give two presentations in Slovenia. My presentations went well and I had good energy and the audience was interacting with me. When I had some time over from networking and partying, I attended a few other presentations. At least the ones who where held in English. One of these was "SQL Server Integration Services 2012 - All the News, and More", given by Davide Mauri, a fellow co-worker from SolidQ. We started to talk and soon came into the details of the new things in SSIS 2012. All of the official things Davide talked about are good stuff, but for me, the best thing is one he didn't cover in his presentation. In earlier versions of SSIS than 2012, it is possible to have a stored procedure to act as a data source, as long as it doesn't have a temp table in it. In that case, you will get an error message from SSIS that "Metadata could not be found". This is still true with SSIS 2012, so the thing I am talking about is not really a SSIS feature, it's a SQL Server 2012 feature. And this is the EXECUTE WITH RESULTSETS feature! With this, you can have a stored procedure with a temp table to deliver the resultset to SSIS, if you execute the stored procedure from SSIS and add the "WITH RESULTSETS" option. If you do this, SSIS is able to take the metadata from the code you write in SSIS and not from the stored procedure! And it's very fast too. Let's say you have a stored procedure in earlier versions and when referencing that stored procedure in SSIS forced SSIS to call the stored procedure (which can take hours), to retrieve the metadata. Now, with RESULTSETS, SSIS 2012 can continue in milliseconds! This is because you provide the metadata in the RESULTSETS clause, and if the data from the stored procedure doesn't match this RESULTSETS, you will get an error anyway, so it makes sense Microsoft has provided this optimization for us.

• Blank screen after Switch User or Resume

  About half the time when I switch users or resume from standby or resume the screen goes blank (black). If I work the cursor keys I can hear the system bell when it gets to the end of the user list. I can also successfully login, going from memory, but screen stays black. Sometimes closing and re-opening the lid will light up the screen again. Pressing the special Function key to enable/disable external monitor connection has no effect [Fn]-[F5],[Fn]-[F6]. If none of the previous work I need to put the computer into hibernation or full power off to restore screen function. If I watch closely when switching users I think I can see the screen initially start to light up and then quickly fade to black. The computer is an Acer Aspire 3500, model ZL6, running Ubuntu 10.10 installed 2 days ago. No proprietary drivers are in use. I'll provide a list of hardware details as soon as I can figure out how to generate that (didn't there used to be an entry for hardware details under the System menu?). Possibly related questions: No resume after Hibernate or Standby When I resume from suspension - the screen is blank Switch user fails to complete successfully For what it's worth, blank after resume also used to happen occasionally when the laptop was running XP-Home, but nowhere near as often, perhaps 6 or 8 times a year. UPDATE: I found System Administration System Testing and ran the Monitor test. It went very very dark, but the window elements could be discerned, and the whole screen flashed (from very very dark to black). On the third repeat of that same test the screen went to full blaupck and stayed there. Moving the mouse, via touchpad, or touch keys did not wake it up again. I had to close the lid and put the computer into hibernate, and press the power button to restore it. • TightVNC (or any VNC) viewer windows scaling

  Hi, I am currently using TightVNC to connect to multiple remote hosts in LAN. I start 16 VNC viewers, set Scaling by: Auto (in connection options display), and then select all viewer windows and use Tile Horizontally, which covers my entire screen with VNC viewers. It all works sort of nice, except that desktop interaction is really slow when there are more then 4 VNC viewers. My question is, does VNC client (not just TightVNC, but any compatible client) support some kind of smart scaling option, so that client tells server something along the lines of: "Okay, I'm displaying your entire screen in a window size 300x225 px, so can you please start sending encoded images on that resolution?", at which point interactiveness of open connections dramatically increase, and when I decide to go full screen on some connection, client and server re-negotiate and server starts sending full resolution images again? • What are some of the benefits of a "Micro-ORM"?

  I've been looking into the so-called "Micro ORMs" like Dapper and (to a lesser extent as it relies on .NET 4.0) Massive as these might be easier to implement at work than a full-blown ORM since our current system is highly reliant on stored procedures and would require significant refactoring to work with an ORM like NHibernate or EF. What is the benefit of using one of these over a full-featured ORM? It seems like just a thin layer around a database connection that still forces you to write raw SQL - perhaps I'm wrong but I was always told the reason for ORMs in the first place is so you didn't have to write SQL, it could be automatically generated; especially for multi-table joins and mapping relationships between tables which are a pain to do in pure SQL but trivial with an ORM. For instance, looking at an example of Dapper: var connection = new SqlConnection(); // setup here... var person = connection.Query<Person>("select * from people where PersonId = @personId", new { PersonId = 42 }); How is that any different than using a handrolled ADO.NET data layer, except that you don't have to write the command, set the parameters and I suppose map the entity back using a Builder. It looks like you could even use a stored procedure call as the SQL string. Are there other tangible benefits that I'm missing here where a Micro ORM makes sense to use? I'm not really seeing how it's saving anything over the "old" way of using ADO.NET except maybe a few lines of code - you still have to write to figure out what SQL you need to execute (which can get hairy) and you still have to map relationships between tables (the part that IMHO ORMs help the most with).

• Best practices for caching search queries

  I am trying to improve performance of my ASP.net Web Api by adding a data cache but I am not sure how exactly to go about it as it seems to be more complex than most caching scenarios. An example is I have a table of Locations and an api to retrieve locations via search, for an autocomplete. /api/location/Londo and the query would be something like SELECT * FROM Locations WHERE Name like 'Londo%' These locations change very infrequently so I would like to cache them to prevent trips to the database for no real reason and improve the response time. Looking at caching options I am using the Windows Azure Appfabric system, the problem is it's just a key/value cache. Since I can only retrieve items based on keys I couldn't actually use it for this scenario as far as Im aware. Is what I am trying to do bad use of a caching system? Should I try looking into NoSql DB which could possibly run as a cache for something like this to improve performance? Should I just cache the entire table/collection in a single key with a specific data structure which could assist with the searching and then do the search upon retrieval of the data?

• Can't create a registry key under Eventlog and I am in administrators group

  I am troubleshooting an installer problem where it's giving an error writing to a registry key. So when I use the Registry Editor (regedit) to create the same key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog, I get a "Cannot create key: Error writing to the registry". Looking at the permissions, administrators have full access and I am a member of that group. I can create entries in other areas in the registry. When I try to take ownership, I see my name already listed. But then I get an error "Unable to set new owner on Eventlog. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service". I tried after a new reboot. I turned off my firewall (Comodo). Why can't I create a new key when I am an admin and permissions indicate I have full control?

• Gnome 3 - Multiple Video Cards - Xinerama -- Forced Fallback Mode

  Just installed a 2nd nvidia video card -- previously had gnome 3 working perfectly with 2 monitors on a a single video card using twinview tried a number of things thus far twinview on 1 card + xinerama no xinerama no twinview various manual xorg.conf hacks based on random forums (couple references below) xinerama no twinview with and without Extensions Composite The last one is what I'm using now -- it results in a forced fallback mode with Composite Disable set at the end of xorg.conf via nvidia-settings Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Disable" EndSection when I disabled that last snippet it boots to gnome 3 full with the left monitor on a black screen and the middle monitor as primary but non-responsive switching to console mode Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then switching back I get 3 black screens with a mouse that can move around but nothing to interact with issue seems related to OpenGL and the multiple video cards -- I can boot into Unity without issue though my Glx-Dock shows up with the black background as barely shows in the screenshot below indicating the OpenGL is not initiated has anyone had any luck with getting Xinerama to work with Multiple NVidia Video Cards with OpenGL support? Found this in the logs while looking a bit further [ 23.208] (II) NVIDIA(1): Setting mode "nvidia-auto-select+0+0" [ 23.254] (WW) NVIDIA(1): The GPU driving screen 1 is incompatible with the rest of the [ 23.254] (WW) NVIDIA(1): GPUs composing the desktop. • What is Ubuntu's Definition of a "Registered Application"?

  I've run into this a few times when installing apps from source, and during the occasional hack with update-alternatives. So far, it's only been a minor annoyance (ie, not got in the way of the end-goal) but it's now a frustration as it's pointing to a hole in my knowledge-base... so when I get a message that 'foo' is "not a registered application" (or I can't use foo's default icon cuz Ubuntu has no knowledge of 'foo'): (1) what defines a "registered application"? (2) how can I define an application installed from source (and likely residing in $HOME/bin/app-name) such that it packs the same functionality as a package installed from a .deb? (if the solution is not self-evident from answer 1) Example: I download and unpack daily dev builds of sublime-text-2 to /home/tom/bin/sublime-text-2. I've created a *.desktop file with appropriate shortcuts, etc. But the icon for sublime cannot be display in any launcher even if I provide a full pathname to the option. The solution is to install a 2nd instance of sublime from a deb package. When I install sublime-text-2 from a .deb package, it installs under /usr/bin && /usr/lib, the installed .desktop file is stored under /usr/share/applications, and the relevant line reads: icon=sublime_text. Where's the linkage I'm missing? Somehow Ubuntu knows how to exact the icon from sublime_text in the latter, but not in the former (again, even with a full path provided).
