• Rails - Sending XML or JSON

  I'm new to Rails and trying to send a request to Chargify to cancel a subscription. Their API says I need to send the method DELETE to a xml URL. This isn't a Chargify based question but rather... how would I have a user click a button that then generates this request and sends it within my Rails app? You can view this url to see what I"m trying to do - http://docs.chargify.com/api-subscriptions#cancel. Also it's working fine when I run a command-line test so I know my code works, just now sure how to put it into my Rails app (view/controller). Thanks

• Oracle rownum in db2 - Java data archiving

  I have a data archiving process in java that moves data between db2 and sybase. FYI - This is not done through any import/export process because there are several conditions on each table that are available on run-time and so this process is developed in java. Right now I have single DatabaseReader and DatabaseWriter defined for each source and destination combination so that data is moved in multiple threads. I guess I wanted to expand this further where I can have Multiple DatabaseReaders and Multiple DatabaseWriters defined for each source and destination combination. So, for example if the source data is about 100 rows and I defined 10 readers and 10 writer, each reader will read 10 rows and give them to the writer. I hope process will give me extreme performance depending on the resources available on the server [CPU, Memory etc]. But I guess the problem is these source tables do not have primary keys and it is extremely difficult to grab rows in multiple sets. Oracle provides rownum concept and i guess the life is much simpler there....but how about db2? How can I achieve this behavior with db2? Is there a way to say fetch first 10 records and then fetch next 10 records and so on? Any suggestions / ideas ? Db2 Version - DB2 v8.1.0.144 Fix Pack Num - 16 Linux

• Web service request ignores basic WSDL XML element restrictions

  Hi all, I have encountered some difficulties while trying to validate an incoming soap message to a service I have running on JBoss AS (v. 5.1.0). In my code, I have explicitly set some fields to be required, eg: public class MyClass { @XmlElement(required=true, nillable=false) private List<myOtherObjects> myList; } This requirement is also reflected in the WSDL (note the lack of minOccurs="0"): <xs:element maxOccurs="unbounded" name="myList" type="tns:myOtherObjects" /> However, when I do a test soap message that has myList set to empty or null, these restrictions are completely ignored, forcing me to validate manually within the application logic on the service. I did some searching on the Internet and found out that, on WebLogic, the validation does not seem to be enabled by default, though it can be turned on by modifying the weblogic-webservices.xml file. (http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=783972&tstart=115) I’m wondering if there is something similar that I have to do with JBoss AS to enable automatic validation before the soap message reaches the service.   I use Oracle's specific data provider, not the Microsoft provider that is being discontinued. The thing I've found about ODP.NET is how picky it is with data types. Where JDBC and other ADO providers just convert and make things work, ODP.NET will throw an invalid cast exception unless you get it exactly right. Consider this code: String strSQL = "SELECT DOCUMENT_SEQ.NEXTVAL FROM DUAL"; OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand(strSQL, conn); reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); if (reader != null && reader.Read()) { Int64 id = reader.GetInt64(0); return id; } Due to ODP.NET's pickiness on conversion, this doesn't work. My usual options are: 1) Retrieve into a Decimal and return it with a cast to an Int64 (I don't like this because Decimal is just overkill, and at least once I remember reading it was deprecated...) Decimal id = reader.GetDecimal(0); return (Int64)id; 2) Or cast in the SQL statement to make sure it fits into Int64, like NUMBER(18) String strSQL = "SELECT CAST(DOCUMENT_SEQ.NEXTVAL AS NUMBER(18)) FROM DUAL"; I do (2), because I feel its just not clean pulling a number into a .NET Decimal when my domain types are Int32 or Int64. Other providers I've used are nice (smart) enough to do the conversion on the fly. Any suggestions from the ODP.NET gurus?

• Calling an Oracle PL/SQL procedure with Custom Object return types from 0jdbc6 JDBCthin drivers

  I'm writing some JDBC code which calls a Oracle 11g PL/SQL procdedure which has a Custom Object return type. Whenever I try an register my return types, I get either ORA-03115 or PLS-00306 as an error when the statement is executed depending on the type I set. Can anyone provide me with an example showing how I can do this? I guess it's possible. However I can't see a rowset OracleType. CURSOR, REF, DATALINK, and more fail. • Getting wierd issue with TO_NUMBER function in Oracle

  I have been getting an intermittent issue when executing to_number function in the where clause on a varchar2 column if number of records exceed a certain number n. I used n as there is no exact number of records on which it happens. On one DB it happens after n was 1 million on another when it was 0.1. million. E.g. I have a table with 10 million records say Table Country which has field1 varchar2 containing numberic data and Id If I do a query as an example select * from country where to_number(field1) = 23 and id 1 and id < 100000 This works But if i do the query select * from country where to_number(field1) = 23 and id 1 and id < 100001 It fails saying invalid number Next I try the query select * from country where to_number(field1) = 23 and id 2 and id < 100001 It works again As I only got invalid number it was confusing, but in the log file it said Memory Notification: Library Cache Object loaded into SGA Heap size 3823K exceeds notification threshold (2048K) KGL object name :with sqlplan as ( select c006 object_owner, c007 object_type,c008 object_name from htmldb_collections where COLLECTION_NAME='HTMLDB_QUERY_PLAN' and c007 in ('TABLE','INDEX','MATERIALIZED VIEW','INDEX (UNIQUE)')), ws_schemas as( select schema from wwv_flow_company_schemas where security_group_id = :flow_security_group_id), t as( select s.object_owner table_owner,s.object_name table_name, d.OBJECT_ID from sqlplan s,sys.dba_objects d It seems its related to SGA size, but google did not give me much help on this. • Create an Oracle function that returns a table

  I'm trying to create a function in package that returns a table. I hope to call the function once in the package, but be able to re-use its data mulitple times. While I know I create temp tables in Oracle, I was hoping to keep things DRY.   Due to blogger.com deprecating FTP users I've decided to move my blog. When I think of the content of a blog, 4 items come to mind: blog posts, comments, binary files that the blog posts linked to (e.g. images, ZIP files) and the CSS+structure of the blog. 1. Binaries The binary files you used in your blog posts are sitting on your own web space, so really blogger.com is not involved with that. Nothing for you to do at this stage, I'll come back to these in another post. 2. CSS and structure In the best case this exists as a separate CSS file on your web space (so no action for now) or in a worst case, like me, your CSS is embedded with the HTML. In the latter case, simply navigate from you dashboard to "Template" then "Edit HTML" and copy paste the contents of the box. Save that locally in a txt file and we'll come back to that in another post. 3. Blog posts and Comments The blog posts and comments exist in all the HTML files on your own web space. Parsing HTML files to extract that can be painful, so it is easier to download the XML files from blogger's servers that contain all your blog posts and comments. 3.1 Single XML file, but incomplete The obvious thing to do is go into your dashboard "Settings" and under the "Basic" tab look at the top next to "Blog Tools". There is a link there to "Export blog" which downloads an XML file with both comments and posts. The problem with that is that it only contains 200 comments - if you have more than that, you will lose the surplus. Also, this XML file has a lot of noise, compared to the better solution described next. (note that a tool I will refer to in a future post deals with either kind of XML file) 3.2 Multiple XML files First you need to find your blog ID. In case you don't know what that is, navigate to the "Template" as described in section 2 above. You will find references to the blog id in the HTML there, but you can also see it as part of the URL in your browser: blogger.com/template-edit.g?blogID=YOUR_NUMERIC_ID. Mine is 7 digits. You can now navigate to these URLs to download the XML for your posts and comments respectively: blogger.com/feeds/YOUR_NUMERIC_ID/posts/default?max-results=500&start-index=1 blogger.com/feeds/YOUR_NUMERIC_ID/comments/default?max-results=200&start-index=1 Note that you can only get 500 posts at a time and only 200 comments at a time. To get more than that you have to change the URL and download the next batch. To get you started, to get the XML for the next 500 posts and next 200 comments respectively you’d have to use these URLs: blogger.com/feeds/YOUR_NUMERIC_ID/posts/default?max-results=500&start-index=501 blogger.com/feeds/YOUR_NUMERIC_ID/comments/default?max-results=200&start-index=201 ...and so on and so forth. Keep all the XML files in the same folder on your local machine (with nothing else in there). 4. Validating the XML aka editing older blog posts The XML files you just downloaded really contain HTML fragments inside for all your blog posts. If you are like me, your blog posts did not conform to XHTML so passing them to an XML parser (which is what we will want to do) will result in the XML parser choking. So the next step is to fix that. This can be no work at all for you, or a huge time sink or just a couple hours of pain (which was my case). The process I followed was to attempt to load the XML files using XmlDocument.Load and wait for the exception to be thrown from my code. The exception would point to the exact offending line and column which would help me fix the issue. Rather than fix it in the XML itself, I would go back and edit the offending blog post and fix it there - recommended! Then I'd repeat the cycle until the XML could be loaded in the XmlDocument. To give you an idea, some of the issues I encountered are: extra or missing quotes in img and href elements, direct usage of chevrons instead of encoding them as &lt;, missing closing tags, mismatched nested pairs of elements and capitalization of html elements. For a full list of things that may go wrong see this. 5. Opportunity for other changes I also found a few posts that did not have a category assigned so I fixed those too. I took the further opportunity to create new categories and tag some of my blog posts with that. Note that I did not remove/change categories of existing posts, but only added.   In an another post we'll see how to use the XML files you stored in the local folder… Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

  What's the best way to get the contents of the mixed "body" element in the code below? The element might contain either XHTML or text, but I just want its contents in string form. The XmlElement type has the InnerXml property which is exactly what I'm after. The code as written almost does what I want, but includes the surrounding <body>...</body> element, which I don't want.   Using C# .NET 2.0, I have a composite data class that does have the [Serializable] attribute on it. I am creating an XMLSerializer class and passing that into the constructor: XmlSerializer serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(DataClass)); I am getting an exception saying: There was an error reflecting type. Inside the data class there is another composite object. Does this also need to have the [Serializable] attribute or by having it on the top object does it recursively apply it to all objects inside? Any thoughts?

• Raphael JS - Parsing an SVG on the fly

  I found a neat SVG parser at http://bkp.ee/atirip/ which parses an SVG file and outputs it into javascript that uses the Raphael JS library (raphaeljs.com). You'll notice in the source code at http://bkp.ee/atirip/svg2rdemo.php : <script> jQuery(document).ready( function() { $("#c1").each(function(){ var c = Raphael(this, 190, 154, 0, 0); var g1 = c.set(); ... it creates variables like g1, g2, etc. But it also reuses these variables. I would like to create unique variables for each group. In my .ai file, I have named my groups and I would like to use these names to create the variable names. Where in http://bkp.ee/atirip/f/svgToRaphaelParser.php.zip should I look to make this change?

  I am trying to use dozer to map between classes. I have a source class that looks like this: public class initRequest{ protected String id; protected String[] details } I have a destination class that looks like this: public class initResponse{ protected String id; protected DetailsObject detObj; } public class DetailsObject{ protected List<String> details; } So essentially i want the string in the details array to be populated into the List in the Details object. • Database Table Prefixes

  We're having a few discussions at work around the naming of our database tables. We're working on a large application with approx 100 database tables (ok, so it isn't that large), most of which can be categorized in to different functional area, and we're trying to work out the best way of naming/organizing these within an Oracle database. The three current options are: Create the different functional areas in separate schemas. Create everything in the same schema but prefix the tables with the functional area Create everything in the same schema with no prefixes We have various pro's and con's around each one but I'd be interested to hear everyone's opinions on what the best solution is.
