• What is the best way to implement a callback scenario using WCF and ASP.NET MVC?

  I am new to WCF. I just finished reading Learning WCF and I think I've got a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals. I am adding functionality to a line of business app that runs on ASP.NET MVC entirely inside the corporate LAN. I am calling into a service that will also send me events as they occur (and not as responses to service calls). These events can occur at any point during the user's session. I have the service written, and it is able to pick up these events. What would be the best way to deliver these events to the user? My initial thought is to run the WCF service in duplex mode over net TCP and implement the events as callbacks. Using this scenario, the best way I can think up to deliver the events to the user is a dictionary object stored in the session. The dictionary would be populated by the callbacks and polled on a set frequency for delivery via AJAX calls. Has anyone dealt with this scenario? Is there a more efficient way to implement this?

• MetadataException: Unable to load the specified metadata resource

  All of a sudden I keep getting a MetadataException on instantiating my generated ObjectContext class. The connectionstring in App.Config looks correct - hasn't changed since last it worked - and I've tried regenerating a new model (edmx-file) from the underlying database with no change. Anyone have any... ideas? Edit: I haven't changed any properties, I haven't changed the name of any output assemblies, I haven't tried to embed the EDMX in the assembly. I've merely waited 10 hours from leaving work until I got back. And then it wasn't working anymore. I've tried recreating the EDMX. I've tried recreating the project. I've even tried recreating the database, from scratch. No luck, whatsoever. I'm truly stumped.

• WebBrowser DrawToBitmap other methods?

  I am trying to capture the content of the WebBrowser control. DrawToBitmap() would work perfectly, but it is not supported in documentation for the WebBrowser control. I have been trying to find another way to capture the contents of the WebBrowser control and save them to a local image file. Anyone have any workarounds or other methods to save the contents of the WebBrowser control to a local image file?

• C# Conditional Compilation and framework targets

  There are a few minor places where code for my project may be able to be drastically improved if the target framework were a newer version. I'd like to be able to better leverage conditional compilation in C# to switch these as needed. Something like: #if NET_40 using FooXX = Foo40; #elif NET_35 using FooXX = Foo35; #else using FooXX = Foo20; #endif Do these symbols come for free? Do I need to inject these symbols as part of the project configuration? Seems easy enough to do since I'll know which framework is being targeted from msbuild. I think I've seen that NET_40 symbol isn't defined? If so I think I could do this? #if !NET_35 && !NET_20 #define NET_40 #endif Or do I need to define it in the msbuild command: /p:DefineConstants="NET_40"

• Update primary key value using entity framework

  I'm trying to update one value of a compound primary key from within the entity framework and I'm getting this error: "The property 'CustomerID' is part of the object's key information and cannot be modified. " Here is my code: Dim customer As Customer = (From c In db.Customer Where c.CustomerID = "xxx" AndAlso c.SiteKey = siteKey).FirstOrDefault customer.CustomerID = "fasdfasdf" db.SaveChanges() It seems too simple. Is it true you can't update a primary key within the entity framework? I can't find any documentation on the topic. Thanks!

• Dealing with huge SQL resultset

  I am working with a rather large mysql database (several million rows) with a column storing blob images. The application attempts to grab a subset of the images and runs some processing algorithms on them. The problem I'm running into is that, due to the rather large dataset that I have, the dataset that my query is returning is too large to store in memory. For the time being, I have changed the query to not return the images. While iterating over the resultset, I run another select which grabs the individual image that relates to the current record. This works, but the tens of thousands of extra queries have resulted in a performance decrease that is unacceptable. My next idea is to limit the original query to 10,000 results or so, and then keep querying over spans of 10,000 rows. This seems like the middle of the road compromise between the two approaches. I feel that there is probably a better solution that I am not aware of. Is there another way to only have portions of a gigantic resultset in memory at a time? Cheers, Dave McClelland

• WPF Global style definitions with .Net4

  I have a WPF application using .Net3.5. I'm now trying to change the target framework to .Net4, but I run into some problems with my style definitions. I have most style definitions in a separate project. Some are global styles that address specific components like e.g. <Button> controls that doesn't have explicit style defined. And some are styles defined with a key such that I can reference them explicitly. Now, the controls that have an explicit style referenced are displayed correctly after changing to .Net4. This goes also for explicit style references in the separate project. However, all global styles are disabled. Controls like e.g. <Button>, that I use the global style for everywhere, now appears without any style. Why?! Does .Net4 require a new way for defining global styles? Or referencing ResourceDictionaries? Anyone seen similar problems? I have tried replacing my style definitions with something very simple: <Style TargetType="{x:Type Button}"> <Setter Property="Background" Value="Red"></Setter> </Style> It still doesn't work. I moved this directly to the ResourceDictionary of the app.xaml, and then it works. I moved it to the ResourceDictionary referenced by the one in app.xaml, and it still works. This ResourceDictionary merges several dictionaries, one of them is the dictionary where the style was originally defined - and it doesn't work when being defined there. Note that there are other style definitions in the same XAML that does work - when being explicitly defined.

• Unit Tests in Visual Studio 2010

  Hi, i am trying to create a Unit test for a WinForm in a Visual Studio 2010 project. I add a new "Coded UI Test" to my project, open up the code file, then right click and select "Generate Code for Coded UI Test" - "Use Coded UI Test builder". I then start my application up, select "Record" on the UI Map control. I run my tests (in this case simply select a textbox, type in a random value, them click a button). I then select "Generate Code" from the UI Map control which generates the code which the test will use. When running this test, i get the error: Test method HelloWorldTest.CodedUITest1.CodedUITestMethod1 threw exception: Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITest.Extension.UITestControlNotFoundException: The playback failed to find the control with the given search properties. Additional Details: TechnologyName: 'MSAA' ControlType: 'Window' Name: 'Form1' ClassName: 'WindowsForms10.Window' --- System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. Does anyone know where i am going wrong? Thanks

  Has anyone seen any image deskew algorithms in c#? I have found: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/graphics/Deskew_an_Image.aspx but unfortunately, it doesn't do very much for images without text. I am specifically trying to auto deskew an image of a book with solid edges, but minimal text. Has anyone seen anything that may be able to do this?

• Defining an Entity Framework 1:1 association

  I'm trying to define a 1:1 association between two entities (one maps to a table and the other to a view - using DefinedQuery) in an Entity Framework model. When trying to define the mapping for this in the designer, it makes me choose the (1) table or view to map the association to. What am I supposed to choose? I can choose either of the two tables but then I am forced to choose a column from that table (or view) for each end of the relationship. I would expect to be able to choose a column from one table for one end of the association and a column from the other table for the other end of the association, but there's no way to do this. Here I've chosen to map to the "DW_ WF_ClaimInfo" view and it is forcing me to choose two columns from that view - one for each end of the relationship. I've also tried defining the mapping manually in the XML as follows: <AssociationSetMapping Name="Entity1Entity2" TypeName="ClaimsModel.Entity1Entity2" StoreEntitySet="Entity1"> <EndProperty Name="Entity2"> <ScalarProperty Name="DOCUMENT" ColumnName="DOCUMENT" /> </EndProperty> <EndProperty Name="Entity1"> <ScalarProperty Name="PK_DocumentId" ColumnName="PK_DocumentId" /> </EndProperty> </AssociationSetMapping> But this gives: Error 2010: The Column 'DOCUMENT' specified as part of this MSL does not exist in MetadataWorkspace.   The short form of this question: When, if ever, is it appropriate to use the Forms.Timer in a multithreaded WinForms application? More specifically, I am architecting an application that uses multiple System.Threading.Timers to launch processes asynchronously, check queues containing the results of those asynchronous processes, and update the statistics to be shown by the application's main form. In an application like that, is it appropriate to use a Forms.Timer to actually check the application statistics and draw them to the main form or would that just throw a wrench into the application's smooth running?

• Why is OracleDataAdapter.Fill() Very Slow?

  I am using a pretty complex query to retrieve some data out of one of our billing databases. I'm running in to an issue where the query seems to complete fairly quickly when executed with SQL Developer, but does not seem to ever finish when using the OracleDataAdapter.Fill() method. I'm only trying to read about 1000 rows, and the query completes in SQL Developer in about 20 seconds. What could be causing such drastic differences in performance? I have tons of other queries that run quickly using the same function.   I'm trying to understand how the ItemsSource and DataContext properties work in a Silverlight Toolkit DataGrid. I'm currently working with dummy data and trying to get the data in the DataGrid to update when the value of a combo box changes. I must not understand how ItemsSource and DataContext are supposed to function, because I expect one of those properties to "just work" when I assign a List object to them. What do I need to understand and change in my code so that as data changes in the List, the data in the grid is updated?

• Entity Data Model & DataGridView - Creating new objects

  I'm pretty new to the EDM, so bear with me. I have a windows form that has a DataGridView on it that's bound from the EDM I created. I figured out how to update my changes fine, but it's when the user creates a new row that I'm having a problem. I tried numerous ways and many google searches, but came up with nothing so far. • Fastest way to convert datatable to generic list

  I have a data tier select method that returns a datatable. It's called from a business tier method that should then return a strongly typed generic List. What I want to do is very similar (but not the same as) this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/208532/how-do-you-convert-a-datatable-into-a-generic-list What's different is that I want the list to contain strongly-typed objects rather than datarows (also, I don't have linq avaiable here yet). I'm concerned about performance. The business tier method will in turn be called from the presentation tier, and the results will be iterated for display to the user. It seems very wasteful to add an extra iteration at the business tier, only do it again right away for the presentation, so I want this to be as quick as possible. This is a common task, so I'm really looking for a good pattern that can be repeated over and over.

  Hi all, Let's say I have a situation in Silverlight where there is a background thread (guaranteed to NOT be the UI thread) doing some work and it needs to create a new thread. Something like this: //running in a background thread Thread t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(delegate{}); t.Start(); Lets also say that the UI thread at this particular time is just hanging around doing nothing. Keeping in mind that I am not that knowledgeable about the Silverlight threading model, is there any danger of the new Thread() call giving me the UI thread? The motivation or what I am trying to achieve is not important - I do not want modification to the existing code. I just want to know if there is a possibility of getting the UI thread back unexpectedly. Cheers

• OutOfMemoryException with Image.Clone - Only on Windows 2003

  So here's my issue. I have an image that I need to shrink. The original image is a grayscale PNG, which isn't a huge issues except that when I shrink it down, the thermal label printers pickup the artifacts and print them on the label. So, what I did was change the image to black & white (Format1bppIndexed) before resizing, like this: Dim bte() As Byte = System.Convert.FromBase64String(imgStr) Dim ms As New IO.MemoryStream(bte) Dim bmp As New System.Drawing.Bitmap(ms) Dim monoImage As Drawing.Bitmap = New Drawing.Bitmap(1200, 1800, Drawing.Imaging.PixelFormat.Format1bppIndexed) Dim rect As New Drawing.Rectangle(0, 0, 1200, 1800) monoImage = bmp.Clone(rect, Drawing.Imaging.PixelFormat.Format1bppIndexed) And then I resize it. This code works fine on my Windows 7 machine, but when I run it on the Windows 2003 Server box that it calls home, it always throws an OutOfMemoryException when it hits the bmp.Clone line. Any ideas as to what's happening, or perhaps a better solution to converting the image to B&W?

• Combine multiple dataset columns to one dataset

  I have multiple datasets that I would like to combine into one. There is a common ID field that can be associated to each row. Calling Merge on the dataset will add additional rows to the dataset, but I would like to combine the additional columns. There are too many fields to do this in one query and therefore would make it unmanageable. Each individual query would be able to handle ordering to ensure the data is placed in the correct row. For Example lets say I have two queries resulting in two datasets: SELECT ID, colA, colB SELECT colC, colD The resulting dataset would look like ID colA colB colC colD 1 a b c d 2 e f g h Any ideas on ways to accomplish this?

• Clicking DetailsView’s Update button doesn’t cause a postback

• How to draw semi-transparent text on a graphics object?

  I want to draw a text with 32 bit transparency on a graphics object. When I try, I only get black color in the result. If I try to draw a line with the same semitransparent color, it works perfectly. I was thinking it may be that SolidBrush does not support transparency, but I found a predefined brush named Transparent (Brushes.Transparent) that was a SolidBrush when I looked at it in debug. I tried to use Brushes.Transparent as the brush when drawing the text, and it was successfully not showing at all. That means I get full transparency to work, but not partial transparency.

  I would like to have the following to be translated to VB 2010 (with advanced syntaxes) _domainContext.SubmitChanges( submitOperation => { _domainContext.Load<Customer>( _domainContext.GetCustomersQuery(), LoadBehavior.RefreshCurrent, loadOperation => { var results = _domainContext.Customers.Where( entity => !loadOperation.Entities.Contains(entity)).ToList(); results.ForEach( enitity => _domainContext.Customers.Detach(entity)); }, null); }, null); I managed to get the above with other ways (but not using anonymous methods). I would like to see all the advanced syntaxes available in VB 2010 to be applied to the above. Can anyone help me on this? thanks
