• iWebKit/iPhone: Chatbox with MySQL, AJAX, PHP and Javascript

  Hello, i am busy with a chatbox that contains MySQL, AJAX, PHP and Javascript. Now i want to have this on my iPod Touch/iPhone, so i am building a website with iWebKit. The following codes i provided is done now; just asking why it does not display the chatbox itself (so not the senders) after more than 2 lines are entered... What codes should i add or remove... • jqtransform form events problem

  I'm a web designer with css experience, but I'm not a JS developer. • Will be self-taught limit me?

  I'm 21 and am pretty efficient in html/css, python, and javascript. I also know my way around lisp languages and enjoy programing in them. My problem is that I'm extremely self-taught and not quite confident that I could land a job programing, but I really need a job soon as I've just become a father. I haven't even created a resume yet because I'm not really sure what to put on it except my lone experience. So I wanted to ask, will being primarily self-taught with some experience on small projects I've done for a few clients limit me too much? I mean I know I need some kind of education so I've enrolled part time in a community college to work on a degree in computer science, but it's years till then. And if it will limit me a lot, what kind of skills would be good to work on to make my chances any better? Thank You

  I have an XForm that has certain fields that may often be left blank (optional street address). Is there is technique to set a default value for that field, preferably a space (I am running into weird formatting issues with CSS). The html form way of value="" doesn't work, neither does setting a default value in the XML schema. • Strategy in exporting to Excel with formatting from ASP.NET?

  So this is another exporting to Excel question. I have a page that has a table with formatting by stylesheet. When I export the page by setting the ContentType to application/excel and Content-Disposition to attachment, I can export the table to Excel (not CSV). However, it loses all formatting. I think it's because Excel does not load CSS and I guess that's reasonable. So, in a scenario where I have to show the table on the web and also export to Excel, both with similar (even if not exact) formatting, what would be the best approach without using something like NPOI? I am trying to minimize the work and keep the single template if possible. Is it necessary for me to create two separate templates: one with stylesheet, the other with embedded style in the table itself for Excel? Having a single template with conditional formatting inside would be very messy. Any ideas?

• Custom ASP.NET MVC cache controllers in a shared hosting environment?

  I'm using custom controllers that cache static resources (CSS, JS, etc.) and images. I'm currently working with a hosting provider that has set me up under a full trust profile. Despite being in full trust, my controllers fail because the caching strategy relies on the File class to directly open a resource file prior to treatment and storage in memory. Is this something that would likely occur in all full trust shared hosting environments or is this specific to my host? The static files live within my application's structure and not in an arbitrary server path. It seems to me that custom caching would require code to access the file directly, and am hoping someone else has dealt with this issue.

  iam using leigeber's sorting javascript to sort my data on my page......i took the js from here :- leigeber's sorting javascript Now this is shwoing highlighted sorted column and all and its all perfect.Now iam having some negative and some positive values in my data and i want to show those negative data in red color and positive in green.This whole sorting thing is using js and css to do the highlighting and sorting.Iam a bit confused now and cant make it out that how i can assign red color to the negative ones and green to the positive ones as js is returning the data as an object i.e. a complete row and i cant make 1 column's data red or green.Will it be done by js itself or with the help of stylesheet to find -ves and +ves.Im totally lost and dont know how to do it.Please help!!!! this is an example of hte data iam using this whole sorting thing on:- -Name- -Price- -loss- -Pts- abc 361.15 -5.68 -21.75 abc2 1072.35 -5.24 -59.25 abc3 512.35 5.24 28.35 abc4 335.2 -5.02 -17.7 abc5 318.6 5.01 -16.8 abc6 76.15 -4.15 3.3

  Hi, I am new to php and trying out this tutorial at : http://css-tricks.com/php-for-beginners-building-your-first-simple-cms/ Unfortunately I am getting the following error and can't seem to track down the reason: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_PUBLIC in ../simpleCMS.php on line 56 My code for simpleCMS.php is as is in the tutorial link above. FYI, my line 56 is the following line of code in simpleCMS.php public function display_admin() { Above this line is public function display_public() Can anyone possibly see what I could be doing wrong and again, my code is the same code from the tutorial website and have downloaded the files that came with it? Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Furthermore, I am using Mac OS X MAMP to run my Apache/MySQL Server locally. My other question is, when I using the following command: mysql_connect($this->host,$this->username,$this->password) is my hostname 'localhost' alone or do I also have to include port alongside the localhost?   Now that the iPad craze is officially open, it's time to think websites also for the iPad. From what I gather, the iPad is using iPhone OS, but with a different screen resolution from the iPhone/iPod touch. So suddenly, the assumption that iPhone OS = iPhone screen resolution becomes false. Sounds like many sites may have to revise their user-agent - css mapping. My pages will be mostly static, with some database stored posts/links. The site will be simple, but I would like to have freedom in how it operates. • No Flash, How do i handle jcupload ?

  I am using http://www.jcupload.com/ (basic) to upload files. I am considering having a friend write a more custom version or to do magic with ajax; so the solution should be able to work without that. With jcupload i include css, a script and write <div id="jcupload_content"></div> in my html and i am done. Problem is, with no flash i get an object box. Instead i would like is an iframe or a html form to upload the file. How do i do this? Should i detect flash from javascript and overload the div myself if no flash is available? How do i detect if flash is available? with jquery i know i can write something like $('#jcupload_content').innerHtml = blah; How do i handle the flash part?

• SmartGWT Widgets not displaying properly

  I have a basic GWT Maven project going. I added SmartGWT and started playing around with some widgets and nothing displays correctly. The ListGrid seems to somewhat render but things are off and even data isnt showing up (though the rows respond to indicate there is data within the row). Sorting arrows dont appear but are clickable, and filters are wildy off. Whats causing this. I deleted everything in the .css file. GWT newbie here.

  I wonder whether there is any good WYSIWYG editor when it comes to editing complex HTML pages generated from ASP.NET, PHP, GWT or anything else. I've tried a lot of WYSIWYG tools, but after a certain point I always end up with manually editing the HTML source code or CSS to fix different issues. The editors I've tried are never compatible with the ASP.NET/PHP/etc code I'm writing. Edit: I have used Visual Studio for a few years to do ASP.NET development. After a while, it always comes to the point where I can't even open the pages and user controls because they rely on so many things which aren't available in debug time.

• HTML5 Cache manifest file itself is not cached, and called at each resource load

  We have a web app that runs on the iPhone.The manifest file is ok, and the resources(html, css, js) are cached correctly.The page sits in the home screen. The trouble is, when the page loads a resource from the cache, there is as well a GET call to the server to read the Cache Manifest file.The server is configured to send the correct header (max-age=31536000; public, etc...) and caches well all other files except the cache manifest itself. Is this a normal behavior? It looks there is a slight lag, because of that call, for each resource load.Any idea, if these multiple calls can get a status 304 or even better avoided?

• Switching from web to desktop development

  Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm). I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?

• jQuery - Animation Causes Div Overlap IE7

  I have a hidden div (#contactArea) above another div. When I click the link, the #contactArea opens up. When I click it again, it closes back up. It all works nicely, except in IE7. The two divs are transparent, so they overlap. I have no idea why this happens, or why doesn't it happen on other browsers. It just about feels like IE7 is right on this one. • Why am I getting 404 in Django?

  After installing this python Django module: http://code.google.com/p/django-compress/wiki/Installation I am getting 404's in my media static files. This Django module is supposed to "compress" the javascript/css files. That's why I'm getting 404 I guess. The problem is, I don't want this anymore. And when I installed this program, I did "python setup.py install" How do I install it? I just want to revert it back to normal so I don't get any 404 errors.

• how to set the background image property of a div to a dynamically generated image

  I have some divs and each one has its own background image. The base images as stored is just a black silhouette. What I would like to do is use the PHP GD package to modify the color of those images somewhat randomly and have the modified randomly coloured images be the background images of the divs. One way to do it is just create GD images structures from the original files, modify them, save the results as a temp file, pass this filename into the client, and then use jquery to modify the css background image properties of the divs to be the new file. But this is going to leave a lot of files laying around to garbage collect. Is there some way to do it without creating a bunch of files?

  Hi I'm trying to create a bookmarklet which will use the jquery-ui - what steps must I take to do this? My bookmarklet loads a remote script and appends it to the page. This script includes jquery and jquery-ui, but getting the stylesheets and images is turning into a nightmare. Do I have to edit all the CSS to point images to their locations on the remote server? Effectively what I'm trying to do is have a bookmarklet which will pop up some information in a nice pretty draggable jquery-ui dialog. Is there an easier way? Thanks, Mala
