• Bash window title not restored after exit

  I have a problem with the window title in the Terminal window on OS X: Start Terminal. Window title is "bash" Type "ssh external" to connect to an external server. Window title is "user@external:~" Type "exit". I am now back at my local machine, but the window title still says "user@external:~". How do I make the window title return to "bash", which I assume would be correct since I have logged out of the external server and returned to my local machine? My ~/.bash_profile has the same PS1 value: export PS1='\w$ '

• Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

  The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? • Strange Inode/Ram cache drops happening in CentOS

  I run a CentOS 5.7 machine (64bit) with 24GB ram and 4x SAS drives in RAID10 setup. This machine runs nginx/1.0.10, php-fpm & xcache. About a month back the RAM usage of this machine has changed. About every few hours the 'CACHE' is flushed from the RAM, this happens exactly when the 'Inode table usage' drops. I'm pretty sure these drops are related. (see the 2 attached images). This server hosts quite a lot of small files (20M all a few KB big). Not many files are deleted (maybe 100 per hour (total size a few MB max)), not enough to account for the huge Inode table drops. I also have no crons running which could cause these drops. Sar -r output: http://pastebin.com/C4D0B79i My question: Why are these huge RAM/Inode usage drops happening? How can I get Nginx/PHP to use all of my servers RAM?

• Referring to mailmerge fields in an if statement

  Context: Windows 7 Microsoft Office Word 2007 I have a mailmerge field named "On_FB". Current code: { IF { On_FB } = "Y" "You're on Facebook." "You're not on Facebok."} The moment I get out of code-editing view, the code goes haywire. When I flip back to code-editing view, I see that the code has magically turned into: { IF " Y" = "Y" "You're on Facebook." "You're not on Facebok."} Needless to say, this is a complete bust because it will always say that the person is not on Facebook. I tried putting { On_FB } on its own and that works fine. What can I do to make the If statement work? (By the way, all the { and } were inserted via CTRL+F9.)

• Form Validation Options

  The steps involved in transmitting form data from the client to the Web server User loads web form. User enters data in to web form fields User clicks submit On submit page validates fields using JavaScript. If validation errors are found then the validation script stops the browser from canceling posting the data to the web server and displays error messages as needed. If the form passes the data validation process then the browser will URL encode the values of every field and post it to the server.  The server reads the posted data from the query string and then again validates the data just to ensure data consistency and to prevent any non-validated data because JavaScript was turned off on the clients browser from being inserted in to a database or passed on to other process. If the data passes the second validation check then the server side code will continue with the requested processes. In my opinion, it is mandatory to validate data using client side and server side validation as a fail over process. The client side validation allows users to correct any error before they are sent to the web server for processing, and this allows for an immediate response back to the user regarding data that is not correct or in the proper format that is desired. In addition, this prevents unnecessary interaction between the user and the web server and will free up the server over time compared to doing only server side validation. Server validation is the last line of defense when it comes to validation because you can check to ensure the user’s data is correct before it is used in a business process or stored to a database. Honestly, I cannot foresee a scenario where I would only want to use one form of validation over another especially with the current cost of creating and maintaining data. In my opinion, the redundant validation is well worth the overhead.

• Limit on WMIC requests from a Windows Service

  Hi all, Does anyone know if there is limit on how many wmic requests Windows can handle simultaneously if they are originating from a Windows service? The reason I'm asking is because my application fails when too many simultaneous requests have been initiated. I don't get any data back from the application. However, If I compile the Python application and run it as a stand alone application all will work fine. The wmic calls are looking like this: subprocess.Popen("wmic path Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfOS_Memory get CommittedBytes", stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE) This makes me wonder, is there a limit Windows Services and what they can perform? I mean, if the .exe file can handle all requests, then it must be something to do with the fact that I have compiled it as a Windows service.

• Move MySQL database while instance is online

  I have a MySQL instance containing a number of databases, one of which is an archive database (although using the INNODB rather than ARCHIVE storage engine) that is not queried or written to in normal operation. The data filesystem is filling up and I'd like to move the archive database's data directory to a different filesystem (and then symlink it back, obviously). If there are no SQL statements attempting to query or update the data during the move, can I safely do this while the MySQL instance and the other databases stay online and in use? I plan to rsync the database directory to the new filesystem, then rename the old one on the original filesystem to something different and create the new symlink. lsof reports that MySQL does have the .ibd files open, so presumably it would have to reopen them.

• Problem opening XWindows programs with xming and SSH Secure Shell

  I've installed SSH Secure Shell and xming on my laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit). I'm having trouble starting X Windows applications from the SSH console. I've been able to do it in the past. I've pretty much determined that it's not a server issue because I've tried it on two different servers (both servers are running RHEL 5). Running "echo $DISPLAY" on either server gave me "localhost:10.0". My XLaunch configuration settings are: Multiple Windows, 10 (display number), and Start no client. Once xming has launched, I'll try to execute something like "firefox" and I get this back: The application 'firefox' lost its connection to the display localhost:10.0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. I've already checked to make sure that the X server is running and it is: root 12579 2689 0 Feb14 tty7 00:04:23 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 Additionally, X11 Tunneling has been enabled in SSH as well as SSH 2 connections.

• what receives an ajax call?

  I'm making a site which should (a) take information from the user in the form of files and forms, (b) take that data to the server to be run on a C application, and (c) take the result back and show it to the user. I was told to look for AJAX for the communication with the server. BTW, I'm using rails. I'm trying to understand how AJAX works. From what I understand so far, with rails is pretty easy to make the call. What I can't figure out is, what waits for that call? what process the call? If I understand correctly, with rails I could make a function in ruby and make it so it's called through AJAX, which means -or so I understand- that it gets executed on the server. If I were using PHP, would I need to make an http server to wait for the AJAX calls? I just don't find information about what waits for the call, and that information is processed. Any links, comments or books are welcome!

• Website deployment - managing uploaded content?

  I'm a programmer by trade, "server administrator" by company necessity. We're looking at dumping the old painful "update site by FTP upload" style of deployment. Having the webserver check out the latest code base from version control into a folder and having a "current" symlink point to the latest checkout (allowing for easily stepping back to an older version by changing the symlink) seems to be the way we want to go. But I have a question: what's a good practice for dealing with user-uploaded content? This stuff isn't in version control. I have a couple of ideas for dealing with this, but what is the smart, accepted practice?

• OT: Fixing choppy video playback on OS X

  This is a bit off-topic but I wanted to share because it seems a lot of people are running into issues with choppy video playback and stutter on Mac OS X. I am using a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) as a home media center and it has worked great in the past, playing back music and videos from multiple sources (web, quicktime, VLC, EyeTV). A few weeks ago the video playback from all my sources started to become choppy, to stutter, and often the picture would hang for seconds at a time. Totally unusable. Drove me nuts for two weeks. After much research and trial-and-error it turns out the problem was an outdated Flash Player which seems to have messed up the video pipeline for the entire system. The short is, I updated the Flash Player to version 11 directly from the Adobe web site, rebooted the Mac Mini, and all is well again! Judging from the various posts across the web, video playback appears to be a fairly widespread problem for Mac users and I hope this helps some of you out there! And I can’t wait to get rid of Flash altogether – I can’t remember the times it has crashed my browser, hung my system, and screwed up things.   Has anyone had any luck with getting 3CX working behind UT7.1 with a SIP account from callcentric.com? I am willing to reset my current UT box back to defaults, and start from there. I have a static public IP assigned to the external interface. My internal addressing is 192.168.76.0 . My 3CX box has 192.168.76.17 . Would anyone be willing to give me a step by step of changes to make in UT / 3CX. I currently have my UT box unplugged, and have replaced it with a Linksys unit. I have port forwarding setup for… TCP/UDP 5060 to 192.168.76.17 UDP 9000-9049 to 192.168.76.17 … and everything works great. I also have additional external IPs available if that helps.

• How can I restore my system from WIM files?

  I installed another OS on my netbook and decided I want to revert back to Windows 7 Starter. I was careful to keep the recovery partition, but even when I manage to boot to it, the system just restarts a few seconds after selecting "restore." I grabbed all the files from the recovery partition onto a flash drive. I also have been able to use this drive to boot a Windows 7 install, but it was unable to find the recovery partition. These WIM files seem to be the key to installing Windows again. How can I use them?

• Apache Reverse Proxy server and SSL NTLM SharePoint

  Hi, I'm trying to set Apache as proxy server to an internal SharePoint server. I have previously configured Apache to run as a proxy server to export internal webpages and web applications. However, the Sharepoint is using SSL and NTLM authentication, and this is new to me :( I have tried many options, the traffic seems to be forwared as I get the authentication popup window, but when I insert the user/pass, I get back to the same popup window. Anybody has configured Apache to do so? • How can I separate the user interface from the business logic while still maintaining efficiency?

  Let's say that I want to show a form that represents 10 different objects on a combobox. For example, I want the user to pick one hamburguer from 10 different ones that contain tomatoes. Since I want to separate UI and logic, I'd have to pass the form a string representation of the hamburguers in order to display them on the combobox. Otherwise, the UI would have to dig into the objects fields. Then the user would pick a hamburguer from the combobox, and submit it back to the controller. Now the controller would have to find again said hamburguer based on the string representation used by the form (maybe an ID?). Isn't that incredibly inefficient? You already had the objects you wanted to pick one from. If you submited to the form the whole objects, and then returned a specific object, you wouldn't have to refind it later on since the form already returned a reference to that object. Moreover, if I'm wrong and you actually should send the whole object to the form, how can I isolate UI from logic?

• Links for Getting Started with PowerShell for Office 365 and Exchange Online

Assuming UTF-8 encoded filenames on source filesystem, use -input-charset to override. Unknown file type (unallocated) ./.. - ignoring and continuing. Using RELEA000.HTM;1 for /RELEASE-NOTES-pt_BR.html (RELEASE-NOTES-U1-pt_BR.html) Size of boot image is 20 sectors -> mkisofs: Error - boot image './isolinux/isolinux.bin' has not an allowable size. i didnt change the isolinux.bin why i ahve this error?

• Backing Up Transaction Logs to Tape?

  I'm about to put my database in Full Recovery Model and start taking transaction log backups. I am taking a full nightly backup to another server and later in the evening this file and many others are backed up to tape. My question is this. I will take hourly (or more if necessary) t-log backups and store them on the other server as well. However, if my full backups are passing DBCC and integrity checks, do I need to put my T-Logs on tape? If someone wants point in time recovery to yesterday at 2pm, I would need the previous full backup and the transaction logs. However, other than that case, if I know my full back ups are good, is there value in keeping the previous day's transaction log backups?

• Need leading zero for batch script using %time% variable

  Hi, I came across a bug in my DOS script that uses date and time data for file naming. The problem was I ended up with a gap because the time variable didn't automatically provide leading zero for hour < 10. So running echo %time% gives back: ' 9:29:17.88'. Does anyone know of a way to conditionally pad leading zeros to fix this? More info: My filename set command is: set logfile=C:\Temp\robolog_%date:~-4%%date:~4,2%%date:~7,2%_%time:~0,2%%time:~3,2%%time:~6,2%.log which ends up being: C:\Temp\robolog_20100602_ 93208.log (for 9:23 in the morning). This question is related to this one. Thanks

• DB API for shell scripting (any shell)

  I am faced with some legacy shell scripts that run batch data processing jobs in Oracle using SQL+. For the most part, the data tier does not have to communicate back to the script with retrieved data to be passed for shell-level processing but in a few cases it does. The problem is, SQL+ is really meant to be an end user app and not an API that can communicate with other clients programmaticaly. That is why people have invented APIs such as DBD::DBI for Perl, JDBC for Java, ODBC etc. The way it is done is they invoke SQL+ and then parse the output, which is clearly designed for human eye consumption, using tools like sed and awk. The whole thing is at best a hack and very prone to bugs. Since this client is rather conservative with their technology, they don't want to scale their scripts up to Perl or Python where there are data access APIs. So I am wondering whether there are similar APIs for shell, e.g. K or bash. What I would like is if an API would return data in a 2-dimensional array or strings (for the lack of type setting) so that I can just read DB data like that. The way they do it now is akin to parsing regular web page HTML to get a single stock quote rather than cleanly calling a web service and be done with it. Anybody know of a product I can use? Thanks
