  • SR Activity Summaries Via Direct Email? You Bet!

I’m a “bottom line” kind of guy.  My friends and co-workers will tell you that I’m a “Direct Communicator” when it comes to work or my social life.  For example, if I were to come up with a fantastic new recipe for a low-fat pan fried chicken, I’d Tweet, email, or find a way to blast the recipe directly to you so that you could enjoy it immediately.  My friends would see the subject, “Awesome New Fried Chicken” and they’d click and see the recipe there before them.Others are “Indirect Communicators.”  My friend Joel is like this.  He would post the recipe in his blog, and then Tweet or email a link back to his blog with a subject, “Fried Chicken.”  Then Joel would sit back and expect his friends to read the email, AND click the link to his blog, and then read the recipe.  As a fan of the “Direct” method, I wish there was a way for me to “Opt-in” for immediate updates from Joel so I could see the recipe without having to click over to his blog to search for it.The same is true for MOS.  If you’ve ever opened a Service Request through My Oracle Support (MOS), you know that most of the communication between you and the Oracle Support Engineer with respect to the issue in the SR, is done via email.  Which type of email would you rather receive in your email account? Example1:Your SR has been updated.  Click HERE to see the update. Or Example2:Your SR has been updated.  Here is the update:  “Hi John, Oracle Development has completed the patch we’ve been waiting for!  Here’s a direct “LINK” to the patch that should resolve your issue.  Please download and install the patch via the instructions (included with the link) and let me know if it does, in fact, resolve your issue!”Example2 is available to you!  All you need to do is to “Opt-In” for the direct email updates.  The default is for the indirect update as seen in Example1.  To turn on “Service Request Details in Email” simply follow these instructions (aided by the screenshot below):1.    Log into MOS, and click on your name in the upper right corner.  Select “My Account.”2.    Make sure “My Account” is highlighted in bold on the left.3.    Turn ON, “Service Request Details in Email” That’s it!  You will now receive the SR Updates, directly in your email account without having to log into MOS, click the SR, scroll down to the updates, etc.  That’s better than Fried Chicken!  (Well; almost better....).

  • Taming Hopping Windows

    At first glance, hopping windows seem fairly innocuous and obvious. They organize events into windows with a simple periodic definition: the windows have some duration d (e.g. a window covers 5 second time intervals), an interval or period p (e.g. a new window starts every 2 seconds) and an alignment a (e.g. one of those windows starts at 12:00 PM on March 15, 2012 UTC). var wins = xs     .HoppingWindow(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5),                    TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2),                    new DateTime(2012, 3, 15, 12, 0, 0, DateTimeKind.Utc)); Logically, there is a window with start time a + np and end time a + np + d for every integer n. That’s a lot of windows. So why doesn’t the following query (always) blow up? var query = wins.Select(win => win.Count()); A few users have asked why StreamInsight doesn’t produce output for empty windows. Primarily it’s because there is an infinite number of empty windows! (Actually, StreamInsight uses DateTimeOffset.MaxValue to approximate “the end of time” and DateTimeOffset.MinValue to approximate “the beginning of time”, so the number of windows is lower in practice.) That was the good news. Now the bad news. Events also have duration. Consider the following simple input: var xs = this.Application                 .DefineEnumerable(() => new[]                     { EdgeEvent.CreateStart(DateTimeOffset.UtcNow, 0) })                 .ToStreamable(AdvanceTimeSettings.IncreasingStartTime); Because the event has no explicit end edge, it lasts until the end of time. So there are lots of non-empty windows if we apply a hopping window to that single event! For this reason, we need to be careful with hopping window queries in StreamInsight. Or we can switch to a custom implementation of hopping windows that doesn’t suffer from this shortcoming. The alternate window implementation produces output only when the input changes. We start by breaking up the timeline into non-overlapping intervals assigned to each window. In figure 1, six hopping windows (“Windows”) are assigned to six intervals (“Assignments”) in the timeline. Next we take input events (“Events”) and alter their lifetimes (“Altered Events”) so that they cover the intervals of the windows they intersect. In figure 1, you can see that the first event e1 intersects windows w1 and w2 so it is adjusted to cover assignments a1 and a2. Finally, we can use snapshot windows (“Snapshots”) to produce output for the hopping windows. Notice however that instead of having six windows generating output, we have only four. The first and second snapshots correspond to the first and second hopping windows. The remaining snapshots however cover two hopping windows each! While in this example we saved only two events, the savings can be more significant when the ratio of event duration to window duration is higher. Figure 1: Timeline The implementation of this strategy is straightforward. We need to set the start times of events to the start time of the interval assigned to the earliest window including the start time. Similarly, we need to modify the end times of events to the end time of the interval assigned to the latest window including the end time. The following snap-to-boundary function that rounds a timestamp value t down to the nearest value t' <= t such that t' is a + np for some integer n will be useful. For convenience, we will represent both DateTime and TimeSpan values using long ticks: static long SnapToBoundary(long t, long a, long p) {     return t - ((t - a) % p) - (t > a ? 0L : p); } How do we find the earliest window including the start time for an event? It’s the window following the last window that does not include the start time assuming that there are no gaps in the windows (i.e. duration < interval), and limitation of this solution.     There are some new faces in the town of WebCenter with the latest 11g PS3 release.  A new component has introduced itself as "Oracle WebCenter Personalization", a.k.a WCP, to simplify delivery of a personalized experience and content to end users.  This posting reviews one of the primary components within WCP: "The Conductor". The Conductor: This ain't just an ordinary cloud... One of the founding principals behind WebCenter Personalization was to provide an open client-side API that remains independent of the technology invoking it, in addition to independence from the architecture running it.  The Conductor delivers this, and much, much more. The Conductor is the engine behind WebCenter Personalization that allows flow-based documents, called "Scenarios", to be managed and executed on the server-side through a well published and RESTful api.      The Conductor also supports an extensible model for custom provider integration that can be easily invoked within a Scenario to promote seamless integration with existing business assets. Introducing the Scenario Conductor Scenarios are declarative offline-authored documents using the custom Personalization JDeveloper bundle included with WebCenter.  A Scenario contains one (or more) statements that can: Create variables that are scoped to the current execution context Iterate over collections, or loop until a specific condition is met Execute one or more statements when a condition is met Invoke other scenarios that exist within the same namespace Invoke a data provider that integrates with custom applications Once a variable is assigned within the Scenario's execution context, it can be referenced anywhere within the same Scenario using the common Expression Language syntax used in J2EE web containers.   • Repair ext4 filesystem on USB drive

    Yet another filesystem question. I wanted to use a USB drive that I hadn't mounted for a month or so and was surprised by the fact Ubuntu was unable to mount it. I looked it up in the disk utility and it said it discovered a device with 17 MB instead of 2 GB. The hardware looks intact, I hope for the best for repairing the ext4 filesystem. I followed the instructions from HOWTO: Repair a broken Ext4 Superblock in Ubuntu, but I wasn't successful. # fsck.ext4 -v /dev/sdb e2fsck 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012) ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block fsck.ext4: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext4: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 Filesystem blocks are invalid, however when I run the recommended solution to try the alternate superblock, I get the following output: # e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sdb e2fsck 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012) e2fsck: Invalid argument while trying to open /dev/sdb plus the same error message as in the last paragraph above. Any ideas how to recover the drive? Thank you very much! Edit: testdisk won't help. I'm still stunned why the tools only discover 17 MB.

    Let me start by saying I have absolutely no inside knowledge, neither through the MVP program or any other means, that is fuelling what I’m about to write. This is entirely conjecture fuelled by speculation and too much Soporro beer at a fantastic Japanese restaurant tonight. Still, I present to you… D’Arcy’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 Predictions!!! So what can we expect to be announced at this year’s WPC? Much more than last year I’m hoping! Last year was sort of encouraging the troops to carry on with the Windows 7 messaging even with Windows 8 looming in the distance. It also showed Microsoft’s slant towards Private Cloud in addition to Azure. This year, we’re going to see a shift to a battle cry – Windows 8 is Coming, Windows 8 is Coming! I expect we’re going to hear an RTM date for Windows 8 from Steve Ballmer tomorrow, in addition to dates surrounding Windows Server 2012. We’ll also hear some announcement around Windows Phone 8, but I’m not really sure what – that whole piece is still quite muddy; are we going to actually *see* Windows Phone 8 devices this week? That would be great, but I imagine those types of announcements might be left for Build. Speaking of Build, I’m expecting an announcement on a date for a Build conference this Fall, probably late October. If any announcements are going to be made around Office 15, the schedule isn’t hinting at it. In fact, other than Office 365 there’s not much mention of Office in the conference sessions – either a red herring, or telling that Microsoft has another announcement coming later. The tagline of the conference is “A New Era. Together.” It’s obvious Microsoft is wanting to leverage WPC to rally their partners to carry the Windows 8 banner into the field of battle this fall when it ships. D

    Leveraging Service Request Best Practices Use best practices to get there faster. In the daily conversations I have with customers, they sometimes express frustration over their Service Requests. They often feel powerless to make needed changes, so their sense of frustration grows. To help you avoid some of the frustration you might feel in dealing with your Service Requests (SR), here are a few pointers that come from our best practice discussions. Be proactive. If you can anticipate some of the questions that Support will ask, or the information they may need, try to provide this up front, when you log the SR. This could be output from the Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA), if this is a database issue, or the output from another diagnostic tool, if you’re an EBS customer. Any information you can supply that helps us understand the situation better, helps us resolve the issue sooner. As you use some of these tools proactively, you might even find the solution to the problem before you log an SR! Be right. Make sure you have the correct severity level. Since you select the initial severity level, it’s easy to accept the default without considering how significant this may be. Business impact is the driving factor, so make sure you take a moment to select the severity level that is appropriate to the situation. Also, make sure you ask us to change the severity level, should the situation dictate. Be responsive! If this is an important issue to you, quickly follow up on any action plan submitted to you by Oracle Support. The support engineer assigned to your Service Request will be able to move the issue forward more aggressively when they have the needed information. This is crucial in resolving your issues in a timely manner. Be thorough. If there are five questions in the action plan, make sure you provide an answer for all five questions in one response, rather than trickling them in one at a time. This will allow the engineer to look at all of the information as a whole and to avoid multiple trips to your SR, saving valuable time and getting you a resolution sooner. Be your own advocate! You know your situation best; make sure Oracle Support understands both how and why this issue is important to you and your company. Use the escalation process if you're concerned that your SR isn't going the right direction, the right pace, or through the right person. Don't wait until you're frustrated and angry. An escalation is as simple as a quick conversation on the phone and can be amazingly effective in getting your issues back on track. The support manager you speak with is empowered to make any needed changes. Be our partner. You can make your support experience better.     I have an older Sony VAIO Z 590 laptop with switchable graphics between Intel and Nvidia GeForce 9300M. It is NOT Optimus. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works, but it's using Unity 2D with the Intel drivers. I've tried loading the Nvidia drivers from "Additional Drivers", but it says "this driver is activated but not currently in use". When I run "nvidia-settings", an error window pops up to say "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X drivers." "lspci" shows both graphics cards. Let me know if I should add more info. How do I get the Nvidia graphics and Unity 3D working?     Investigating the market for a new software product can be a daunting task. Sometimes it’s difficult to even uncover all of the players. There’s no shortage of rhetoric on each vendor’s web site, but how can today’s CTO get objective information about how a software package ranks against it’s peers in a given space? Every year, Gartner releases what they call a Magic Quadrant report evaluating various products in a given space. This past week, Gartner released their analysis of products in the Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) arena. It is very exciting to see us in the top spot as a thought leader and for our ability to execute. If you are interested in ALM, you can read through an entire reprint of the report here. There’s plenty of new competitors listed and some of the existing competitors have shifted quite a bit. And this comes prior to the release of Team Foundation Server 2012! I suppose with all of the new features in 2012, they could just add another square to the upper-right. It’s beyond awesome! It’s be-awesome!

  • Incremental search in Visual Studio

    Visual studio is a Great IDE and there are still lots of feature that not known to developers. Incremental search is one of them. This is a amazing feature to find code in particular document and its available from Visual Studio 2010 and carried over in Visual Studio 2012. Incremental search allows developers to search in document without blocking UI and allow to search as they type. Interesting!! right.. So let’s open visual studio and see how it works. Once you open Visual Studio and press Ctrl + I and type something it will find the string without blocking your visual studio UI. Just like following. In the above code you can see that, I have typed Cons and You can see that whole console word is highlighted. Even you can see that find dialog box on top right corner of visual studio 2012 like following. Same way if you see the footer in visual studio where it is finding cons in current document like following.     I have this sam e question on StackOverflow and I was advised to ask it here hoping for more information. Here is the question: I am in rather unfavorable situation. I have aspdotneststore front e-commerce application and search addon called VibeTrib. I dont have source code for both of those. Store that runs on StoreFront and VibeTrib has close to 250k products. Also we have lots of filters. I spoke to ViTrib reps, and they want extra money so they could optimize Queries that they use. Money they require is nto a big deal, but the problem is I dont trust them anymore. What we got is much different then wha is being advertised. To cut the long story short. I am runing the store on Amazon AWS now, and regardless of what DB (MsSQL 2012) server I set (I tried 32GB RAM monsters instances) it is slow. Ajax search uses Full Text search and it displays search keywords relatively fast, but once the search is performed ( to display all results) it is still slow.!!! There is something that I could to do accelerate the speed on my own end? I do have full control over EC2 Instance (Web server Server 2012 and IIS 8). Can I set IIS to step in for the search and cache some of it? I was hoping to cache at least some most common words. My best bet is IIS 8 :) Is there any help in my case? Thanks

This session describes how to do this efficiently and how to performance-tune the resulting applications. The objectives for the session are: Explain reasons for using native code in Java applications Describe pitfalls of calling native code from Java Discuss performance-tuning of Java apps that use native code I'll cover how to call native code from Java, debugging native code, and then I'll dig into performance tuning the code. The talk is not going too deep on performance tuning - focusing on the JNI specific topics; I'll do a bit more about performance tuning in my OpenWorld talk later in the day.

  • Nashorn in the Twitterverse, Continued

    After doing the Twitter example, it seemed reasonable to try graphing the result with JavaFX.  At this time the Nashorn project doesn't have an JavaFX shell, so we have to go through some hoops to create an JavaFX application.  I thought showing you some of those hoops might give you some idea about what you can do mixing Nashorn and Java (we'll add a JavaFX shell to the todo list.) Okay, with the meat out of the way, let's talk about the hoops. The  load method reads a script into memory and then gets engine to eval that script.  Note, that load also returns the result of the eval. Now for the fun part.  There are several different approaches we could use to communicate between the Java main and the script.  In this example we'll use a Java interface.  The JavaFX main needs to do at least start and stop, so the following will suffice as an interface; public interface Trending {     public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception;     public void stop() throws Exception; } At the end of the example's script we add; (function newTrending() {     return new Packages.Trending() {         start: function(stage) {             var data = getTrendingData();             graph(stage, data);             stage.show();         },         stop: function() {         }     } })(); which instantiates a new subclass instance of Trending and overrides the start and stop methods.  The result of this function call is what is returned to main via the eval. trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); To recap, the script Trending.js contains functions getTrendingData, graph and newTrending, plus the call at the end to newTrending.  Back in the Java code, we cast the result of the eval (call to newTrending) to Trending, thus, we end up with an object that we can then use to call back into the script.  trending.start(stage); Voila. ?

  • .NET Oracle Provider: Why will my stored proc not work?

    I am using the Oracle .NET Provider and am calling a stored procedure in a package. The message I get back is "Wrong number or types in call". I have ensured that the order in which the parameters are being added are in the correct order and I have gone over the OracleDbType's thoroughly though I suspect that is where my problem is.   • How do I create statistics to make ‘small’ objects appear ‘large’ to the Optmizer?

    I recently spoke with a customer who has a development environment that is a tiny fraction of the size of their production environment. His team has been tasked with identifying problem SQL statements in this development environment before new code is released into production. The problem is the objects in the development environment are so small, the execution plans selected in the development environment rarely reflects what actually happens in production. To ensure the development environment accurately reflects production, in the eyes of the Optimizer, the statistics used in the development environment must be the same as the statistics used in production. This can be achieved by exporting the statistics from production and import them into the development environment. Even though the underlying objects are a fraction of the size of production, the Optimizer will see them as the same size and treat them the same way as it would in production. Below are the necessary steps to achieve this in their environment. I am using the SH sample schema as the application schema who's statistics we want to move from production to development. Step 1. Create a staging table, in the production environment, where the statistics can be stored Step 2. Export the statistics for the application schema, from the data dictionary in production, into the staging table Step 3. Create an Oracle directory on the production system where the export of the staging table will reside and grant the SH user the necessary privileges on it. Step 4. Export the staging table from production using data pump export Step 5. Copy the dump file containing the stating table from production to development Step 6. Create an Oracle directory on the development system where the export of the staging table resides and grant the SH user the necessary privileges on it.  Step 7. Import the staging table into the development environment using data pump import Step 8. Import the statistics from the staging table into the dictionary in the development environment.
