• Is there a media/music player program that has a "biased" shuffle?

  I know in iTunes and a few other apps you can get playlists for just "highly rated" songs, but that's not quite what I want. I want to hear the lower-rated stuff, too. If I didn't like the song at some level it wouldn't be in my library in the first place, and so even a one-star song is worth the occasional listen. However, I do want to hear five-star songs a lot more often than one-star songs, even though I think I have a lot more one-star songs in my music library. So does anyone know of media player software of plugin (preferrable free) that has a shuffle mode that is biased towards songs that are rated higher, without completely excluding those that are rated lower? Right now I prefer windows media player, so a plugin for that would be ideal, but I'm not married to media player, either. Any music software that will do this would be worth some attention.

• Forum engine with full LDAP integration [closed]

  We are looking for forum engine which may actually maintain user data into LDAP, maybe via mods. Core point is about ability to maintain the data, i.e. all user profile settings, like nickname, password, email, avatar, birthday and others (preferably configurable). One example of good ldap integration, level of which I'm expecting, is drupal's ldap integration, which allows to map any user's attribute into ldap and keeps it in sync with database. Year ago I've done a small research over existing Free&FOSS engines and find out few forum engines with LDAP integration, namely SFM, phpBB and something else. The most maintained solution were provided by phpBB3, which supports LDAP integration out-of-box, but it is unable to sync data with changes in LDAP server made by other software. Actually it wasn't even propagating changes back, I'm not saying about ability to map additional attributes (other than name/password/email). Also, I haven't found any forum with architecture which have proper abstraction over user settings, thus I doubt that this engines (including phpBB) are possible to mod such functionality without introducing dramatic changes into core codebase. More recent research showed that even some commercial software, like IPB is unable to keep it's database synced with LDAP directory and map additional attributes. In other words, all support I've seen so far is simple user creation upon first user's login, which is not good for us, as forum is not primary site and should not maintain it's own users base (to reduce risk of possible collisions). LDAP import is required due to many other services (ftp, email, jabber, drupal site) using same users base. Currently we have forum embedded into Drupal site, but we are unsatisfied with it's features. BTW, we are using Linux and this is not duplicate of this question, as it's author seems to be satisfied with behaviour described above. So, my question is: Are there any (preferably FOSS&free) forum engines that may import, export, keep in sync, or otherwise integrade with LDAP user database (preferably with ability to map additional fields to ldap attributes)?

• Development teams do not scale

  Recently I have been thinking about how development teams don't scale very well. The bigger a team and the product get, the more time the team spends fixing software bugs. This means they spend more time doing troubleshooting and debugging as the grow. The problem is that since developers don't typically have access to production servers, there is a bottleneck in the process when doing production troubleshooting.For a team that has 10 developers, I would guess than 0-2 of them have access to production servers. If that team grows to 20 people, it is probably the same 0-2 people that have production access still. This means that those 2 key people are a bottleneck and the team does not scale correctly as you add more resources. All those new developers want is to help track down and fix software bugs, but they don't have the visibility to do it. So they end up being less productive and frustrated because they really want to fix the problems. The people who do have production access end up spending too much of their time doing troubleshooting instead of working on new projects.The solution is to remove the bottlenecks and get those people working on more important tasks. Stackify can solve this problem by giving all the developers read only access to production servers. This allows them to access the information they need to do troubleshooting on their own.

• 4 - 7 second delay accessing Mysql across the network

  Hello, our company has recently purchased a new server with the intention of replacing our aging database server. its a full 64bit 2008 enterprise system, i have got the basic server setup and configured and then installed the 64bit version of mysql on the server, this has then been configured to match where possible our existing server as much as it can. however i have noticed that when it was swapped with the production database server our software systems had an increased delay accessing the mysql database this was anything beween 4 - 7 seconds. i have tried disabling TOE, IPv6 and a few other suggested soultions to this but so far cannot find out where this slowdown is coming from. replacing the server with the production one and the delay goes away. in terms of software and hardware the servers are not very identical at all due to one being windows 2003 std with a 32bit server and the new one being windows 2008 enterprise with a 64bit server. thanks Kris

• Suggestions for getting an open source electron beam tracking code going

  I work in the field of accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation. High energy electrons circulating in large rings of magnets produce x-rays that are used for a variety of different kinds of science. Running and improving these facilities requires controlling and modelling the electron beam as it circulates in the ring. A code to model this basically requires trackers to follow the electrons through the elements (something called a symplectic integrator), and then the computation of different parameters associated with this motion. The problem with these codes is that every facility has there own. In principle the code is not so complex. And as a modelling project, one might think it has some general interest. Who doesn't want to be able to create a track in space out of magnets and watch the electrons circulate? There is a Matlab based code to do this called Accelerator Toolbox, but the creator of the code is no longer in the field. I put the code in Sourceforge under the name atcollab. The basic resource is in C- it is the set of symplectic integrators. These are available in the atcollab code here. It has been useful to put the code on Sourceforge in order to exchange code, but the community of users is quite small and most are too busy to put that much time into collaboration. So in terms of really improving the code, I don't think it has been so successful. Any piece of this picture could be recreated without that much difficulty, but overall it is a bit complex, and because each lab has their own installation with lots of add-on Matlab code, people find it hard to really work together and share code. Somehow I think we need to involve a wider community in our development, or just use some standard tools. But for that, I suppose it needs to be of some general interest. I think symplectic integrators may have some general interest. And the part about a plug-in architecture to build up the ring ought to fit other patterns. Or the other option is to just accept that this is not a problem of general interest, and work harder within our small community. Suggestions, or anecdotes of analogous experience would be appreciated.

  Istanbul NOV 5-9 Wednesday, NOV 7 - It is raining outside and I am sitting in my hotel room (#106) in Istanbul and create my first blog entry. Today this blog was enabled and I am excited to have the ability to share my (first) thoughts with the EMEA JDE Partner Community. I am here in Istanbul because we are currently running the JDEdwards PreSales University Event series. This PreSales University is an established event series which we deliver the fifth time now and the first time in the ECEMEA region. Delegates value the openness and competence from the Product Strategy and Product Development Team from Denver and India. Together with the regional Oracle PreSales team we had very valuable discussions around product features and functions and about the business value of the new delivered applications and tools. Additionally the event provides endless opportunities to exchange ideas with other JD Edwards Partner and the Oracle PreSales Team. With its focus on sharing and learning, best practice, user experience and transforming technologies, delegates will leave this event with an abundance of new ideas and best practices to try for your coming projects and existing customer implementations. A day out of the office gives delegates a chance to gain a new perspective on their business processes. Everybody sees better ways of working just by being immersed in an environment where the focus is on using products more effectively. Apps Track: Highly concentrated participants in Istanbul listening to Jeff Erickson presenting the news about OneView Reporting. Jeff: We believe “The things you said”. The event is organized into two tracks, one for Apps and one for Tech. Everybody was able to learn new features and functions and how to position this products. The focus was on the new Apps release 9.1 and Tools Release 9.1.2 and their Value Propositions. For all topics hands-on exercises has been given to the participants. Even very experienced senior consultants did learn a lot from this event. In total we have 55 people registered and we still have some more content to deliver. By the way: Istanbul is a nice place to be. I already booked my next trip to this beautiful city. In two weeks we deliver the JD Edwards EECIS Executive Forum again in Istanbul. I was thinking a day and the only one idea I've got is about writting some small application which will scan the processes running every second, and in case if any injector will be found the game client will exit immadiately. I'm writing here to see your opinions on this case as some of you may have some expierence against protecting the game clients against DLL or PYC injection or something.

  I have recently switched from MAC to Windows Vista. I used to have LittleSnitch on Mac where I can create filters and disable browsing to other websites. I mean, I can create filters so that LittleSnitch will not send traffic to specific websites like Google Analytics etc. However, I cannot find a similar software on Windows. I tried Zone Alarm firewall, but it doesn't let you add filters to stop traffic to specific websites. Are there any software available on windows which are similar to LittleSnitch?
