• Windows 7 SP1 not being offered on Windows Update

  i have no option to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on my computer. Why is the option to install Windows 7 SP1 missing from Windows Update? i'm less interested in why the option is missing, and more interested in how to diagnose why the option to install Windows 7 SP1 is being hidden. Following the suggestions in KB2498452 - You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows Update to check for updates: Confirm that Windows 7 SP1 is not already installed and that you are not running a prerelease version of Windows 7 SP1 i am not already running SP1, or a pre-release SP1: Check for pending updates Update 976902 may have to be installed on your computer before Windows 7 SP1 will be offered in Windows Update. i already have 976902 installed: Verify that an incompatible version of SafeCentral is not installed on your computer Windows SP1 may not appear in Windows Update if certain versions of SafeCentral are installed on your computer. SafeCentral is a security program that is manufactured by SafeCentral, Inc. i do not have SafeCentral installed (i've never heard of such a thing): Check whether you have Intel integrated graphics driver Igdkmd32.sys or Igdkmd64.sys and whether you upgraded the driver i do not have an Intel GMA: Make sure that you did not use vLite to customize your Windows 7 installation i did not use vLite to customize my Windows 7 installation. Again, i've never heard of such a thing. The KB article says that SP1 will not be offered if your machine doesn't meet some secret special criteria. How can i discover what that secret criteria is? i presume it is logged somewhere. Nor am i particularly interested in a direct download link. i want to learn here. i want to be able to diagnose (i.e. in the future) why an update is not being offered. i'm a superuser here. Rather than others coming up with a checklist of things to try, i want to be able to come up with the checklist.

• Tactics for using PHP in a high-load site

  Before you answer this I have never developed anything popular enough to attain high server loads. Treat me as (sigh) an alien that has just landed on the planet, albeit one that knows PHP and a few optimisation techniques. I'm developing a tool in PHP that could attain quite a lot of users, if it works out right. However while I'm fully capable of developing the program I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to making something that can deal with huge traffic. So here's a few questions on it (feel free to turn this question into a resource thread as well). Databases At the moment I plan to use the MySQLi features in PHP5. However how should I setup the databases in relation to users and content? Do I actually need multiple databases? At the moment everything's jumbled into one database - although I've been considering spreading user data to one, actual content to another and finally core site content (template masters etc.) to another. My reasoning behind this is that sending queries to different databases will ease up the load on them as one database = 3 load sources. Also would this still be effective if they were all on the same server? Caching I have a template system that is used to build the pages and swap out variables. Master templates are stored in the database and each time a template is called it's cached copy (a html document) is called. At the moment I have two types of variable in these templates - a static var and a dynamic var. Static vars are usually things like page names, the name of the site - things that don't change often; dynamic vars are things that change on each page load. My question on this: Say I have comments on different articles. Which is a better solution: store the simple comment template and render comments (from a DB call) each time the page is loaded or store a cached copy of the comments page as a html page - each time a comment is added/edited/deleted the page is recached. Finally Does anyone have any tips/pointers for running a high load site on PHP. I'm pretty sure it's a workable language to use - Facebook and Yahoo! give it great precedence - but are there any experiences I should watch out for? Thanks, Ross

• Django app that can provide user friendly, multiple / mass file upload functionality to other apps

  Hi, I'm going to be honest: this is a question I asked on the Django-Users mailinglist last week. Since I didn't get any replies there yet, I'm reposting it on Stack Overflow in the hope that it gets more attention here. I want to create an app that makes it easy to do user friendly, multiple / mass file upload in your own apps. With user friendly I mean upload like Gmail, Flickr, ... where the user can select multiple files at once in the browse file dialog. The files are then uploaded sequentially or in parallel and a nice overview of the selected files is shown on the page with a progress bar next to them. A 'Cancel' upload button is also a possible option. All that niceness is usually solved by using a Flash object. Complete solutions are out there for the client side, like: SWFUpload http://swfupload.org/ , FancyUpload http://digitarald.de/project/fancyupload/ , YUI 2 Uploader http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/uploader/ and probably many more. Ofcourse the trick is getting those solutions integrated in your project. Especially in a framework like Django, double so if you want it to be reusable. So, I have a few ideas, but I'm neither an expert on Django nor on Flash based upload solutions. I'll share my ideas here in the hope of getting some feedback from more knowledgeable and experienced people. (Or even just some 'I want this too!' replies :) ) You will notice that I make a few assumptions: this is to keep the (initial) scope of the application under control. These assumptions are of course debatable: All right, my idea's so far: If you want to mass upload multiple files, you are going to have a model to contain each file in. I.e. the model will contain one FileField or one ImageField. Models with multiple (but ofcourse finite) amount of FileFields/ ImageFields are not in need of easy mass uploading imho: if you have a model with 100 FileFields you are doing something wrong :) Examples where you would want my envisioned kind of mass upload: An app that has just one model 'Brochure' with a file field, a title field (dynamically created from the filename) and a date_added field. A photo gallery app with models 'Gallery' and 'Photo'. You pick a Gallery to add pictures to, upload the pictures and new Photo objects are created and foreign keys set to the chosen Gallery. It would be nice to be able to configure or extend the app for your favorite Flash upload solution. We can pick one of the three above as a default, but implement the app so that people can easily add additional implementations (kinda like Django can use multiple databases). Let it be agnostic to any particular client side solution. If we need to pick one to start with, maybe pick the one with the smallest footprint? (smallest download of client side stuff) The Flash based solutions asynchronously (and either sequentially or in parallel) POST the files to a url. I suggest that url to be local to our generic app (so it's the same for every app where you use our app in). That url will go to a view provided by our generic app. The view will do the following: create a new model instance, add the file, OPTIONALLY DO EXTRA STUFF and save the instance. DO EXTRA STUFF is code that the app that uses our app wants to run. It doesn't have to provide any extra code, if the model has just a FileField/ImageField the standard view code will do the job. But most app will want to do extra stuff I think, like filling in the other fields: title, date_added, foreignkeys, manytomany, ... I have not yet thought about a mechanism for DO EXTRA STUFF. Just wrapping the generic app view came to mind, but that is not developer friendly, since you would have to write your own url pattern and your own view. Then you have to tell the Flash solutions to use a new url etc... I think something like signals could be used here? Forms/Admin: I'm still very sketchy on how all this could best be integrated in the Admin or generic Django forms/widgets/... (and this is were my lack of Django experience shows): In the case of the Gallery/Photo app: You could provide a mass Photo upload widget on the Gallery detail form. But what if the Gallery instance is not saved yet? The file upload view won't be able to set the foreignkeys on the Photo instances. I see that the auth app, when you create a user, first asks for username and password and only then provides you with a bigger form to fill in emailadres, pick roles etc. We could do something like that. In the case of an app with just one model: How do you provide a form in the Django admin to do your mass upload? You can't do it with the detail form of your model, that's just for one model instance. There's probably dozens more questions that need to be answered before I can even start on this app. So please tell me what you think! Give me input! What do you like? What not? What would you do different? Is this idea solid? Where is it not? Thank you!

• Streaming Video with Blackberry Simulator

  So, I wrote a quick little app for the iphone that takes in an http URL, and plays the .mp4 video located at that URL (it does more than that, of course, but that's the meat of it). Naturally, I wanted to have it on more than just a single mobile platform, so I decided to target Blackberry next. However, I'm running into a lot of problems with the Blackberry Environment. First of all, I learn that I can only download 256k files! I learn how to set that variable in my MDS simulator (and learn that this is NOT a production solution, because any end users will have to have their BES or MDS admin change the setting there). Then, I find a video less than 2 MB I can practice with. Going to the browser prompts me to save the video (rather than it playing in the browser like I expected). After saving the video, it refuses to play, saying it's the wrong format. So. I can't find a reference to IF Blackberry can stream with HTTP (i"ve heard it CAN use RTSP, though, and heard some rumors that it can't use HTTP, which would really suck). I also can't find a reference to what format blackberry uses (although I can find a million programs that will convert one file to the 'blackberry' format). Surely SOMEONE must have tried to stream video with the blackberry before. How did they go about doing so? Is it just a hopeless pipedream? Will I have to go with RTSP? Sorry for the lack of a concrete question...I'm just really lost, and I hate how so many tutorials or forum posts seem to assume I know the capabilities of the Blackberry... Edit: I finally found out that the .3gp (which I'd never heard of ) format is what Blackberry uses. Still have no idea how to stream videos off the web, though. I have no intention to repost a question that has already been answered, so if that's the case, I apologize and I'd be thankful to whom points out where the solution is posted. Here is my question: I'm trying to deploy an EJB in WebLogic 10.3.2. The purpose is to use a specific WorkManager to execute work produced in the scope of this component. With this in mind, I've set up a WorkManager (named ResponseTimeReqClass-0) on my WebLogic configuration, using the web-based interface (Environment Work Managers New). • Gateway Page Between ASP and an ASP.NET Page

  I'll admit, I am pretty new with ASP .NET programming and I have been asked to take all our gateway pages (written in classic ASP) and make one universal gateway page to the few C# .NET applications we have (that I wrote). I tried searching here and the web and couldn't find much of anything describing a great way to do this and figured I was either not searching properly or was not properly naming what I am trying to do. I decided to to take one of the main gateway pages we had in classic ASP and use that as a base for my new gateway. Without boring you with a bunch of code I will summarize my gateway in steps and then can take advice/critique from there. EDIT: Basically what I am trying to do is go from a classic ASP page to a ASP .NET page and then back again. EDIT2: If my question is still unclear I am asking if what I have an the right start and if anyone has suggestions as to how this could be better. It can be as generic as need-be, not looking for a specific off-the-shelf code answer.   I'm trying to use a reloadable spring resource bundle but spring cannot find the file. I've tried tons of different paths, but can't get it to work anywhere. In the code below you'll see that i load both the spring bundle and the regular one from the same path variable but only one works. I've been banging my head against this for far too long.   I'm tearing my hair out trying to work out why the command I'm executing via Java using a ProcessBuilder & Process is not working. I run the "same" command at the Windows command line and it works as expected. It must be that they're not the same but I can't for the life of me work out why. The command is this: ccm start -nogui -m -q -n ccm_admin -r developer -d /path/to/db/databasename -s http://hostname:8400 -pw Passw0rd789$ The output is should be a single line string that I need to grab and set as an environment variable (hence the v. basic use of the BufferedReader). • Classic ASP vs. ASP.NET encryption options

  I'm working on a web site where the new pages are ASP.NET and the legacy pages are Classic ASP. Being new to development in the Windows env, I've been studying the latest technology, i.e. .NET and I become like a deer in headlights when ever legacy issues come up regarding COM objects. Security on the website is an abomination, but I've easily encrypted the connectionStrings in the web.config file per http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/021506-1.aspx based on DPAPI machine mode. I understand this approach is not the most secure, but it's better than nothing which is what it was for the ASP.NET pages. Now, I question how to do similar encryption for the connection strings used by the Classic ASP pages. A complicating factor is that the web sited is hosted where I do not have admin permissions or even command line access, just FTP. Moreover I want to avoid managing the key. My research has found: DPAPI with COM interop. Seems like this should already be available, but the only thing I could find discussing this is CyptoUtility (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163884.aspx) which is not installed on the hosting server. There are plenty of other third party COM objects, e.g. Crypto from Dalun Software http://www.dalun.com, but these aren't on the hosted server either, and they look to me to require you to do some kind of key management. There is CAPICOM on the hosted server, but M$ has deprecated it and many report it is not the easiest to use. It is not clear to me whether I can avoid key management with CAPICOM similar to using DPAPI for ASP.NET. If anyone happens to know, please clue me in. I could write an web service in ASP.NET and have the classic ASP pages use it to get the decrypted connection strings and then store those in an application variable. I would not need to use SSL since I could use localhost and nothing would be sent over the internet. In the simpliest form I could implement what someone termed a poor man's version based on a simple XML stream, however, I really was looking to avoid any development since I find it hard to believe there is not a simple solution for Classic ASP like there is for ASP.NET. Maybe I'm missing some options... Recommendations are requested...

• Vector math, finding coördinates on a planar between 2 vectors

  I am trying to generate a 3d tube along a spline. I have the coördinates of the spline (x1,y1,z1 - x2,y2,z2 - etc) which you can see in the illustration in yellow. At those points I need to generate circles, whose vertices are to be connected at a later stadium. The circles need to be perpendicular to the 'corners' of two line segments of the spline to form a correct tube. Note that the segments are kept low for illustration purpose. [apparently I'm not allowed to post images so please view the image at this link] http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6863/18720019.jpg I am as far as being able to calculate the vertices of each ring at each point of the spline, but they are all on the same planar ie same angled. I need them to be rotated according to their 'legs' (which A & B are to C for instance). I've been thinking this over and thought of the following: two line segments can be seen as 2 vectors (in illustration A & B) the corner (in illustraton C) is where a ring of vertices need to be calculated I need to find the planar on which all of the vertices will reside I then can use this planar (=vector?) to calculate new vectors from the center point, which is C and find their x,y,z using radius * sin and cos However, I'm really confused on the math part of this. I read about the dot product but that returns a scalar which I don't know how to apply in this case. Can someone point me into the right direction? [edit] To give a bit more info on the situation: I need to construct a buffer of floats, which -in groups of 3- describe vertex positions and will be connected by OpenGL ES, given another buffer with indices to form polygons. To give shape to the tube, I first created an array of floats, which -in groups of 3- describe control points in 3d space. Then along with a variable for segment density, I pass these control points to a function that uses these control points to create a CatmullRom spline and returns this in the form of another array of floats which -again in groups of 3- describe vertices of the catmull rom spline. On each of these vertices, I want to create a ring of vertices which also can differ in density (amount of smoothness / vertices per ring). All former vertices (control points and those that describe the catmull rom spline) are discarded. Only the vertices that form the tube rings will be passed to OpenGL, which in turn will connect those to form the final tube. I am as far as being able to create the catmullrom spline, and create rings at the position of its vertices, however, they are all on a planars that are in the same angle, instead of following the splines path. • Why aren't the :locals hash variables being passed in to a partial, when called from inside my rake

When I try to pull the partial from a rake task, I get the dreaded "Called id for nil, which would mistakenly be 4" error, which usually means that my locals hash has not been properly set into the partial.   I've been working on a game with an engine that updates 20 times per seconds. I've got to point now where I want to start getting some performance figures and tweak the rendering and logic updates. In order to do so I started to add some timing code to my game loop, implemented as follows... If I change AWK to GAWK and run the original script here is the output: gawk: cmd. line:11: print $1,$2, $g[i] > "output_"f[i]".csv gawk: cmd. line:11: ^ unterminated string So I edit the relevant line to fix the unterminated string print $1,$2, $g[i] > "output_"f[i]".csv" Then it runs through fine produces no errors, but there is no output files. • What should I do or don't do to avoid Delphi "push dword" bug.

  I found that Delphi 5 generates invalid assembly code in specific cases. I can't understand in what cases in general. The example below produces access violation since a very strange optimization occurs. For a byte in a record or array Delphi generates push dword [...], pop ebx, mov .., bl that works correctly if there are data after this byte (we need at least three to push dword correctly), but fails if the data is inaccessible. I emulated the strict boundaries here with win32 Virtual* functions Specifically the error occurs when the last byte from the block accessed inside FeedBytesToClass procedure.   So I have a complex form for an IncomeDeclaration. Its going to display a textfield GrossIncome for each Activity that the IncomeDeclaration is related to... this all gets done on the server and works just fine.... the problem is. I have a query that compares the course number of this upcoming semester's classes to the course numbers of historical textbook orders, pulling out only those classes that are being taught this semester. That's where I get lost. I'm not sure I'm thinking of record sets in the right way, though.
