• Get cryptic error when trying to create a snapshot of any of my VMs

  I'm using Oracle VM VirtualBox. I have 6 VMs that I've imported. When I click on an individual VM, and then click the camera image (or Ctrl+Shift+S) to take a snapshot, the snapshot process fails and VirtualBox gives the following error: Failed to create a snapshot of the virtual machine vmName. Details: Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005) This happens not only for one of my VMs, but all of them, if I try to take a snapshot of each one separately, one at a time. My computer is a Windows 7 machine. I have 200 GB free on my hard drive, and I see no reason why the error should occur. I can import VMs, run them, and clone then without any problems. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix the issue?

• What is the difference between Row Level Security and RPD security?

  Row level security (RLS) is a feature of Oracle Enterprise Edition database. RLS enforces security policies on the database level. This means any query executed against the database will respect the specific security applied through these policies. For P6 Reporting Database, these policies are applied during the ETL process. This gives database users the ability to access data with security enforcement even outside of the Oracle Business Intelligence application. RLS is a new feature of P6 Reporting Database starting in version 3.0. This allows for maximum security enforcement outside of the ETL and inside of Oracle Business Intelligence (Analysis and Dashboards). Policies are defined against the STAR tables based on Primavera Project and Resource security. RLS is the security method of Oracle Enterprise Edition customers. See previous blogs and P6 Reporting Database Installation and Configuration guide for more on security specifics. To allow the use of Oracle Standard Edition database for those with a small database (as defined in the P6 Reporting Database Sizing and Planning guide) an RPD with non-RLS is also available. RPD security is enforced by adding specific criteria to the physical and business layers of the RPD for those tables that contain projects and resources, and those fields that are cost fields vs. non cost fields. With the RPD security method Oracle Business Intelligence enforces security. RLS security is the default security method. Additional steps are required at installation and ETL run time for those Oracle Standard Edition customers who use RPD security. The RPD method of security enforcement existed from P6 Reporting Database 2.0/P6 Analytics 1.0 up until RLS became available in P6 Reporting Database 3.0\P6 Analytics 2.0.

• Windows7 x64 clipboard failure

  Hi. I'm using windows 7 x64 and i need to work with citrix client. Unfortunately my clipboard stops working after 5-10 minutes with citrix apps. I can't copy/paste anything. But on citrix clipboard is still working. Problem disappears after rebooting computer. But it's takes too much time. Is there any way to restart clipboard process or fix this problem without rebooting ? Thanks ! UPD.1 Copy/Paste is broken only on my local computer. It means that when I'm pressing ctrl+c (also when doing the same with mouse) ctrl+v pastes nothing (in GUI menu it's highlighted with gray - disabled). Occasionally it repairs itself when I'm starting rebooting: nsd.exe crashes with some exception, reboot stops and then it works again. But I'm still not sure that problem is in nsd.exe (Lotus notes)

• Command-line way to send keystrokes to a window open on a different X-session

  I have a Ubuntu desktop open and logged on, on my main machine. I am then also logging in to this machine from a remote computer, using X2go which creates a new X-session. I have a libreoffice file open on the original session. I want to save this file and close it - but from the remote machine! (Both sessions have same user logged in; I can sudo if needed) I have tried using xdotool search but this fails to find the window. Is there a way to do what I want from this second session? I can see the process with ps -A I can even see the open file with lsof! How can I do a "save-and-close" on it?

• Cron not able to succesfully change background

  I'm running 12.04 with a custom XML background (modification on Day of Ubuntu) that changes based on time of day. I've noticed that there's a significant delay between when the changes are scheduled to take place in the XML file and when they actually show up on the background. I've also noticed that when I resume from suspend I don't get the correct background image either. I've found that cycling the wallpaper manually will fix this, and I've written a script to automate the process. If I execute the script manually it works fine. However, when I schedule the script to run in cron, cron doesn't change the background. To make sure that the script was being run properly by cron, I had it create a directory in my home folder after running the background change, and the directory is created successfully, so I know cron is running and executing the script. My script: #!/bin/bash sleep 5 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///home/zak/Pictures/Wallpaper/DOU2.xml sleep 1 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///home/zak/Pictures/Wallpaper/DOU.xml sleep 1 mkdir /home/zak/iscronworking exit Is cron just not able to access gsettings? The job is on my user crontab so it shouldn't be running as root. Alternately, is there any way to make Precise play nicely with XML wallpaper?

• How to recover from a drive failure in a RAID 5 configuration?

  This morning a drive failed on our database server. The drive array (3 disks) is setup in a RAID 5 configuration. While we wait for a drive replacement we are preparing for a recovery strategy. Users are continuing to work on the system, albeit very slowly (don't know why??). How does one install the new drive - will the data for this drive automatically be rebuilt from the parity or is there another process we should follow? Edit: This is a hardware RAID controller. • Unix copy command that has a progress bar, but not as heavy as rsync

  I need to copy lots of files. Usually I use rsync because I pass it the -aP options and I can see (a) how many files are left to process and (b) how much of each individual file is copied. However rsync also does lots of things with checksums to verify that a file was copied. However I don't really need that now. But normal cp doesn't include the above mentioned count of files left, which is very helpful. Is there anything like cp that includes progress of how many files left, but isn't as heavy as rsync?

• monitoring nfs with monit

  I'd like to monitor NFS mounts and the NFS server process using Monit. On the server, I'd need a PID file, but I can't seem to find a way of getting that created with existing configuration files. Is there a way to do this, or has anyone monitored the server in a different way (checking if port 53 is active, etc). On clients, I was thinking of making Monit simply look for a specific file in an NFS mount, and if it's accessible, all is well. Problem is, if the NFS server does go down, file requests usually hang (perhaps even indefinitely, not sure). How would one get around this issue with monit? Any configuration examples would be greatly appreciated!

  I am using google maps and returning html/lat/long from my MySQL database Currently A user picks a business category e.g; "Video Production". an ajax call is sent to a CodeIgniter controller the Controller then queries the db, and returns the following data via JSON Lat/Long of the marker HTML for the popup window this is approximately 34 rows in the database across two tables per business the ajax call receives this data and then plots the marker along with the html onto the map The data that is returned from the controller is one big json object... This is done for all businesses that exist in the Video Production category (currently approx 40 businesses). As you can see, pulling this data for multiple categories (100s of businesses) can get very very taxing on the server. My question is Would it be more beneficial to modify the process flow as such: a user picks a business category e.g; "Video Production". an ajax call is sent to a CodeIgniter controller the controller then queries the database for the location base information lat/long level (used to change marker icon color) This would be a single row per business with several columns the ajax call receives this data and then plots the marker on the map when the user clicks a marker an ajax call is sent to a CodeIgniter Controller the controller queries the database for the HTML and additional data based on business_id and if not, what are some better suggestions to this problem? In summary this means rather than including the HTML and additional data along for each business, only submitting minimal location information and then re-query for that information when each business marker is clicked. Potential Downsides longer load times when a user clicks a marker icon more code?? more queries to the database

• Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

  My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • Designing configuration for subobjects

  I have the following situation: I have a class (let's call it Main) encapsulating a complex process. This class in turn orchestrates a sequence of subalgorithms (AlgoA, AlgoB), each one represented by an individual class. To configure Main, I have a configuration stored into a configuration object MainConfig. This object contains all the config information for AlgoA and AlgoB with their specific parameters. AlgoA has no interest to the information relative to the configuration of AlgoB, so technically I could have (and in practice I have) a contained MainConfig.AlgoAConfig and MainConfig.AlgoBConfig instances, and initialize as AlgoA(MainConfig.AlgoAConfig) and AlgoB(MainConfig.AlgoBConfig). The problem is that there is some common configuration data. One example is the printLevel. I currently have MainConfig.printLevel. I need to propagate this information to both AlgoA and AlgoB, because they have to know how much to print. MainConfig also needs to know how much to print. So the solutions available are I pass the MainConfig to AlgoA and AlgoB. This way, AlgoA has technically access to the whole configuration (even that of AlgoB) and is less self-contained I copy the MainConfig.printLevel into AlgoAConfig and AlgoBConfig, so I basically have three printLevel information repeated. I create a third configuration class PrintingConfig. I have an instance variable MainConfig.printingConfig, and then pass to AlgoA both MainConfig.AlgoAConfig and MainConfig.printingConfig. Have you ever found this situation? How did you solve it ? Which one is stylistically clearer to a new reader of the code ?

• Why might apache2 use 100% of CPU at startup?

  This is apache 2.2.14 on SLES9. Out of nowhere (i.e. it had been working fine for ages) I am seeing apache2 suddenly start using 100% of the CPU at startup, and never completing startup. Nothing is getting written to /var/log/error_log (when it did back when things were OK). ps only shows the main httpd process and not any of the spawned threads. When things were OK, it would show the spawned threads. So it appears httpd is going into some sort of infinite loop right at startup and isn't even completing startup. It's not an issue of being overloaded by connections -- this happens even when nothing is trying to contact it. The config files haven't changed (or at least they haven't changed in a way that changed their last-modified time). I've tried added -e debug -E /var/log/apache2/startup_info to the command line, but nothing is put in the file. Any ideas what could be happening?

• What Should You Look for In a CRM Demo?

  I have helped firms evaluate software demos and delivered demos in diverse industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, life sciences, and travel (to name just a few). Here are a few suggestions. First, which vendor has the best fit for your industry? Make sure that the vendor demo staff tell you clearly throughout the demo (not just in a passing comment), what portion of each business process and screen is standard, what has been configured, what has been custom coded, and what has been provided by a partner. If you don't keep asking, what you buy may be less useful than what you saw. This will lead to added (and unbudgeted) costs and time. Second, what are the roles of the primary users? What are their top-most needs, such as exception-oriented dashboards or rapid data entry? Can you get a demo for each key role, showing how the software fits a typical workday? Have the vendor repeatedly tell you what is standard, configured, custom coded, or provided by a partner. Third, how well does the demo balance ease of use with completeness of business processes? One common approach is to hide needed fields or steps that are of low visual value. Another approach is to focus heavily on a visually appealing capability, while downplaying the fit with your key business processes. Result: despite their business acumen, demo attendees may not focus adequately on gaps in business fit So, look for complete disclosure and complete CRM. • Windows 7 Networking Problem

  Hello, I'm on a Windows 7 Computer with an additional Win7 computer and an XP computer and I keep getting an error: 0x8007046a: "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" when I try to connect to a share on the Windows XP Computer. The Windows 7 Computers talk fine as far as HomeGroup, etc, but no dice with XP shares. Additionally this is in a workgroup. I have searched countless forums including TechNet, tried IRPStackSize, DhcpNodeType, and Uninstalling/Reinstalling File and Printer Sharing for M$ Networks. Any help is much appreciated.

• Is there a way to set access to WMI using GroupPolicy?

  From various documentation it appears that to change WMI access you need to use WMI to access the running service and modify specific parts of the tree. Its kind of annoying changing 150,000 hosts using the UI. And then having to include such changes in the process of adding new hosts. Could write a script to do the same, but that needs to either connect to all those machines live, or be distributed for later update say in an startup/install script. And then you have to mess around with copying binary SD data from an example access control. I've also found you can change the wbem/*.mof file to include an SDDL but I'm really vague on how that all works at the moment. Am I just missing some point of simple administration?
