• MVVM framework AND Prism 4?

  I just read this question. It has some nice answers, but they are over 1 year old, and a lot have changed in this space over the last year. Some of the most popular frameworks have come out in a new mayor release such as Prism and MVVM Light Toolkit. My question is somehow the same, but with one twist, I'm already using Prism 4.0 because of the region and module features. Prism 4.0 embraces MVVM, but I feel there are something which are "not lightweight", for instance interaction requests. So I'm thinking would it better to use another MVVM framework either as a substitute or a supplement for Prism 4.0?

• Bing Maps - how to link to a push pin from a link outside the map

  I have a Virtual Earth Maps (Bing Maps??) to which I have added a set of pushpins. Each pushpin is labelled 1 to n. In addition to adding pushpins to the map, I also add text to the web-page that contains the description to each pushpin. I would like to add a link to the text outside the map, that when clicked will open the balloon associated with the corresponding pushpin. How do I open the balloon associated with a pushpin, through a link that exists outside the map? To get a better understanding, look at my map: link. When you click load, PushPins are added to the map. I would like to have a link from the list on the right of the map, that opens the corresponding PushPin. Thanks in advance!

• JPA 2.0, hiberante 3.5, jars & persistence.xml location

  I'm building a desktop application using hibernate 3.5 & JPA 2.0. I have 2 jars, the lib, which defines every entity and DAO, packages looks like this : org.my.package.models org.my.package.models.dao org.my.package.models.utils In org.my.package.utils I defined my hibernate utility class for getting EM & EMF instances, which means the lib is bound to a Persistence Unit name but that's not a problem for now (anyway you can recommend me a better way to manage that) the second jars is built as follow: org.my.package.app META-INF is defined on the root of the project which means in my jar I can find this directories directly in the root: META-INF/ META-INF/persistence.xml org/ org/my/ ... org/my/package/app/Main.class META-INF/ When I run the app, hibernate doesn't managed to find persistence.xml it throws an exception something like "package or class for PersistenceUnitName not found". I googled a bit about the problem but I can't get the source code organisation right. Any help ?

• NHibernate: Subqueries.Exists not working

  I am trying to get sql like the following using NHibernate's criteria api: SELECT * FROM Foo WHERE EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM Bar WHERE Bar.FooId = Foo.Id AND EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM Baz WHERE Baz.BarId = Bar.Id) So basically, Foos have many Bars and Bars have many Bazes. I want to get all Foos that have Bars with Bazes. To do this, a detached criteria seems best, like this: var subquery = DetachedCriteria.For<Bar>("bar") .SetProjection(Projections.Property("bar.Id")) .Add(Restrictions.Eq("bar.FooId","foo.Id")) // I have also tried replacing "bar.FooId" with "bar.Foo.Id" .Add(Restrictions.IsNotEmpty("bar.Bazes")); return Session.CreateCriteria<Foo>("foo") .Add(Subqueries.Exists(subquery)) .List<Foo>(); However this throws the exception: System.ArgumentException: Could not find a matching criteria info provider to: bar.FooId = foo.Id and bar.Bazes is not empty Is this a bug with NHibernate? Is there a better way to do this?

• Split NSData objects into other NSData objects with a given size

  I'm having an NSData object of approximately 1000kb big. Now I want to transfer this via bluetooth. This would be better if I have let's say 10 objects of 100kb. It comes to mind that I should use the -subdataWithRange: method of NSData. I haven't really worked with NSRange. Well I know how it works, but then to read from a given location with the length: 'to end of file'... I've no idea how to do that. Some code on how to split this into multiple 100kb NSData objects would really help me out here. (it probably involves the length method to see how many objects should be made..?) • Java Web Start: unsigned cglib

  I am using hibernate on the server side with a client application started via Java Web Start. I can't sign the jars (I'd like to but I can't). I get a permission exception when I get a POJO with lazy fields. Caused by: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission cglib.debugLocation read) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPropertyAccess(Unknown Source) at java.lang.System.getProperty(Unknown Source) at net.sf.cglib.core.DebuggingClassWriter.(DebuggingClassWriter.java:35) ... 44 more How can I avoid that? I thought about setting the collection to null before returning the pojo to the client but I'd like to find a better solution.

• Action -methods vs public methods in PHP frameworks

  There are plenty of PHP frameworks out there as many of you know, and I am interested in your thoughts on this: Zend Framework has so-called action controllers that must contain at least one action method, a method whose name ends in "Action". For example: public function indexAction() {} The word "Action" is important, without it you can't access the method directly via the URI. However, in some other frameworks like Kohana you have public and private methods, where public methods are accessible and private are not. So my question is which do you think is a better approach? From a secure point of view I would vote Zend's approach, but I am interested in knowing what others think.

• Objective-C and Android

  I've just finished a relatively large project for the Android, and it's left a bitter taste in my mouth with the knowledge that it will never run on one of the most ubiquitous handsets this side of the solar system (the one by that fruity little club). So, for my next project, I want to write it in a way that makes most of the components easily transportable between the iPhone and Android platforms. The way I'm thinking of doing this is by coding most of it in Objective-C, and then adding the platform-specific parts in more Objective-C and Java respectively. On the Android side, this will require using the the NDK. My knowledge of C is good, but my knowledge of Objective-C is close to zero, and I have no desire to learn C++. How sane is the approach above, and is there a better one? Is there any way I can code in Java and still reach the un-hacked iPhone market? And how likely is it that the people I know (iPhone users) will have an Android phone by next year?

• ASMX Web Services with SOAP Extension

  I am in the process of setting up a web service for an external client to connect to my client's application and update some information. I went the ASMX route (the rest of the application runs on WCF) because I knew the external client could be very difficult to deal with and I was trying to keep everything as simple as possible. They also aren't a .Net shop which makes things worse. After getting the service setup for them I provided the ASMX URL for them to see how to format the SOAP headers/message content. They have since come back and told me their tool is unable to send them in the format required by .Net and I can either come up with a different way to accept messages or we have to go with FTP. Based on this I have been researching how to intercept their message, reformat it the way my service requires it (which means adding two lines), and then let it process. This path led me to SOAP Extensions which I have been trying to work with but can't seem to figure out. When I have my sample application call the web service from the generated code Add Web Reference provides everything works great until I add in my extension. All it currently does is override ChainStream setting an internal stream equal to the one being passed in and returning a new stream, like this: private Stream newStream = null; private Stream oldStream = null; public override Stream ChainStream(Stream stream) { this.oldStream = stream; this.newStream = new MemoryStream(); return newStream; } I also override ProcessMessage and in it take the contents of oldStream and set newStream equal to that and then write to a different stream with an XmlWriter. I take that new stream and using a StreamReader read it into a string, with the end goal being manipulating it here and setting newStream (which is being used by ChainStream) equal to the contents of this. If I either don't use the extension or I don't do anything in ProcessMessage everything seems fine. Any suggestions to this? As a side note, once I get this working with the generated code from the WSDL I will be moving to a WebRequest to try sending the message to the service. Currently that bombs out with a 415 Unsupported Media Type response. I'm trying to keep this post to one question but if anyone has any tips with using a WebRequest to connect to an ASMX service it would be much appreciated!

• How to count each digit in a range of integers?

  Imagine you sell those metallic digits used to number houses, locker doors, hotel rooms, etc. You need to find how many of each digit to ship when your customer needs to number doors/houses: 1 to 100 51 to 300 1 to 2,000 with zeros to the left The obvious solution is to do a loop from the first to the last number, convert the counter to a string with or without zeros to the left, extract each digit and use it as an index to increment an array of 10 integers. I wonder if there is a better way to solve this, without having to loop through the entire integers range. Solutions in any language or pseudocode are welcome. Edit: Answers review John at CashCommons and Wayne Conrad comment that my current approach is good and fast enough. Let me use a silly analogy: If you were given the task of counting the squares in a chess board in less than 1 minute, you could finish the task by counting the squares one by one, but a better solution is to count the sides and do a multiplication, because you later may be asked to count the tiles in a building. Alex Reisner points to a very interesting mathematical law that, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to be relevant to this problem. Andres suggests the same algorithm I’m using, but extracting digits with %10 operations instead of substrings. John at CashCommons and phord propose pre-calculating the digits required and storing them in a lookup table or, for raw speed, an array. This could be a good solution if we had an absolute, unmovable, set in stone, maximum integer value. I’ve never seen one of those. High-Performance Mark and strainer computed the needed digits for various ranges. The result for one millon seems to indicate there is a proportion, but the results for other number show different proportions. strainer found some formulas that may be used to count digit for number which are a power of ten. Robert Harvey had a very interesting experience posting the question at MathOverflow. One of the math guys wrote a solution using mathematical notation. Aaronaught developed and tested a solution using mathematics. After posting it he reviewed the formulas originated from Math Overflow and found a flaw in it (point to Stackoverflow :). noahlavine developed an algorithm and presented it in pseudocode. A new solution After reading all the answers, and doing some experiments, I found that for a range of integer from 1 to 10n-1: For digits 1 to 9, n*10(n-1) pieces are needed For digit 0, if not using leading zeros, n*10n-1 - ((10n-1) / 9) are needed For digit 0, if using leading zeros, n*10n-1 - n are needed The first formula was found by strainer (and probably by others), and I found the other two by trial and error (but they may be included in other answers). For example, if n = 6, range is 1 to 999,999: For digits 1 to 9 we need 6*105 = 600,000 of each one For digit 0, without leading zeros, we need 6*105 – (106-1)/9 = 600,000 - 111,111 = 488,889 For digit 0, with leading zeros, we need 6*105 – 6 = 599,994 These numbers can be checked using High-Performance Mark results. Using these formulas, I improved the original algorithm. It still loops from the first to the last number in the range of integers, but, if it finds a number which is a power of ten, it uses the formulas to add to the digits count the quantity for a full range of 1 to 9 or 1 to 99 or 1 to 999 etc. Here's the algorithm in pseudocode: integer First,Last //First and last number in the range integer Number //Current number in the loop integer Power //Power is the n in 10^n in the formulas integer Nines //Nines is the resut of 10^n - 1, 10^5 - 1 = 99999 integer Prefix //First digits in a number. Comments are for Number = 1,000 and Last = 8,000. To use it with leading zeros, I used a hack: If range 700 to 1,000 with leading zeros is needed, use the algorithm for 10,700 to 11,000 and then substract 1,000 - 700 = 300 from the count of digit 1. • Can I use imp/exp tools to migrate database from Oracle 9 to Oracle 10

  I'm subcontractor and my client wants to upgrade Oracle database from 9 to 10. Other vendor is going to perform the upgrade process, and I was asked to create whatever backup I need before the upgrade, and then recreate the environment in Oracle 10. All my data is stored in a separate database in a single schema. No fancy relations, scripts or anything like this (actual app supports different dbs: Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres so we want to avoid any DB-specific code). I was hoping to use imp/exp but I'm not sure if imp/exp are backward compatible (exp from O9 and imp to O10)? If there is a better/recommended way of dealing with similar situation, I'll be grateful for any advice.

  Hello, I've recently been bitten by the (way too commmon in my opinion) gotcha of Concat returns it's result, rather than appending to the list itself. For instance. List<Control> mylist=new List<Control>; //.... after adding Controls into mylist MyPanel.Controls.Concat(mylist); //This will not affect MyPanel.Controls at all. MyPanel.Controls=MyPanel.Controls.Concat(mylist); //This is what is needed, but the Controls reference can not be reassigned (for good reason) So is there some other way of combining two lists that will work when the collection reference is read-only? Is the only way to do this with a foreach? foreach(var item in mylist){ MyPanel.Controls.Add(item); } Is there a better way without the foreach?

• What git branching models actually work - the final question

  In our company we have successfully deployed git and we are currently using a simple trunk/release/hotfixes branching model. However, this has it's problems, I have some key issues of confusion in the community which would be awesome to have answered here. Maybe my hopes for an Alexander stroke are too great, quite possibly I'll decompose this question into more manageable issues, but here's my first shot. Workflows / branching models - below are the three main descriptions of this I have seen, but they are partially contradicting each other or don't go far enough to sort out the subsequent issues we've run into (as described below). Thus our team so far defaults to not so great solutions. Are you doing something better? gitworkflows(7) Manual Page (nvie) A successful Git branching model (reinh) A Git Workflow for Agile Teams Merging vs rebasing (tangled vs sequential history) - the bids on this are as confusing as it gets. Should one pull --rebase or wait with merging back to the mainline until your task is finished? Personally I lean towards merging since this preserves a visual illustration of on which base a task was started and finished, and I even prefer merge --no-ff for this purpose. It has other drawbacks however. Also many haven't realized the useful property of merging - that it isn't commutative (merging a topic branch into master does not mean merging master into the topic branch). I am looking for a natural workflow - sometimes mistakes happen because our procedures don't capture a specific situation with simple rules. For example a fix needed for earlier releases should of course be based sufficiently downstream to be possible to merge upstream into all branches necessary (is the usage of these terms clear enough?). However it happens that a fix makes it into the master before the developer realizes it should have been placed further downstream, and if that is already pushed (even worse, merged or something based on it) then the option remaining is cherry-picking, with it's associated perils... What simple rules like such do you use? Also in this is included the awkwardness of one topic branch necessarily excluding other topic branches (assuming they are branched from a common baseline). Developers don't want to finish a feature to start another one feeling like the code they just wrote is not there anymore How to avoid creating merge conflicts (due to cherry-pick)? What seems like a sure way to create a merge conflict is to cherry-pick between branches, they can never be merged again? Would applying the same commit in revert (how to do this?) in either branch possibly solve this situation? This is one reason I do not dare to push for a largely merge-based workflow. How to decompose into topical branches? - We realize that it would be awesome to assemble a finished integration from topic branches, but often work by our developers is not clearly defined (sometimes as simple as "poking around") and if some code has already gone into a "misc" topic, it can not be taken out of there again, according to the question above? How do you work with defining/approving/graduating/releasing your topic branches? Proper procedures like code review and graduating would of course be lovely, but we simply cannot keep things untangled enough to manage this - any suggestions? integration branches, illustration please? • How do I export a large table into 50 smaller csv files of 100,000 records each

  I am trying to export one field from a very large table - containing 5,000,000 records, for example - into a csv list - but not all together, rather, 100,000 records into each .csv file created - without duplication. How can I do this, please? I tried SELECT field_name FROM table_name WHERE certain_conditions_are_met INTO OUTFILE /tmp/name_of_export_file_for_first_100000_records.csv LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' LIMIT 0 , 100000 that gives the first 100000 records, but nothing I do has the other 4,900,000 records exported into 49 other files - and how do I specify the other 49 filenames? for example, I tried the following, but the SQL syntax is wrong: SELECT field_name FROM table_name WHERE certain_conditions_are_met INTO OUTFILE /home/user/Eddie/name_of_export_file_for_first_100000_records.csv LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' LIMIT 0 , 100000 INTO OUTFILE /home/user/Eddie/name_of_export_file_for_second_100000_records.csv LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' LIMIT 100001 , 200000 and that did not create the second file... what am I doing wrong, please, and is there a better way to do this?   Hello everyone. I'm working on an app which scrapes data from a website and I was wondering how I should go about getting the data. Specifically I need data contained in a number of div tags which use a specific CSS class - Currently (for testing purposes) I'm just checking for "div class = "classname"" in each line of HTML - This works, but I can't help but feel there is a better solution out there. • PrestaShop vs. Shopify

  I have seen several Questions comparing different ECommerce CMS's: Prestashop compared to Zen-Cart and osCommerce Magento or Prestashop, which is better? Best php/ruby/python e-commerce solution I was hoping to get some people to weigh in with which they prefer for a relatively small E-shop. I am now primarily looking at PrestaShop and Shopify. I really like that Shopify does the hosting, has quality service, and is simple to understand and theme. However PrestaShop is free and seems to be able to do just as much if not more than Shopify. I have decided that Magento is too clunky for the project, and have read that many other solutions (osCommerce, ZenCart, OpenCart) are outdated, buggy, or just inferior. Thank you!

Sample data for fact table: ID Salary 4 6000 5 5000 7 4000 Is there any good to way to display the hierarchy from hierarchy table with aggregated sum of salary based on employees. Expected result is like Name Salary PA 15000 (Pittsburgh + others(if any)) Pittusburgh 15000 (Accounts + HR) Accounts 11000 (Alex + Robin) Alex 6000 (direct values) Robin 5000 HR 4000 Robert 4000 In my production environment, hierarchy table may contain 23000+ rows and fact table may contain 300,000+ rows. So, I thought of providing any level of groupid to the query to retrieve just its children and its corresponding aggregated value. Any better solution?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to develop an image focusing algorithm for some test automation work. I've chosen to use AForge.net, since it seems like a nice mature .net friendly system. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find information on building autofocus algorithms from scratch, so I've given it my best try: take image. apply sobel edge detection filter, which generates a greyscale edge outline. generate a histogram and save the standard dev. move camera one step closer to subject and take another picture. if the standard dev is smaller than previous one, we're getting more in focus. otherwise, we've past the optimal distance to be taking pictures. is there a better way? update: HUGE flaw in this, by the way. as I get past the optimal focus point, my "image in focus" value continues growing. you'd expect a parabolic-ish function looking at distance/focus-value, but in reality you get something that's more logarithmic

• MathML or OMML to PNG w/ .NET?

  Are there any libraries which take MathML (or, even more preferably, OMML) and outputs a .PNG file? I am putting together an export process for .docx files and, as a part of this process, I'd like to extract equations and render them as .PNG files. Word 2007 does this natively when you save a document for the web, but so far, I have not been able to find a way to do this programmatically (if anyone has an answer for that, it would be even better). So the next best thing is to take the OMML and use the Microsoft provided XSL stylesheets and transform them to MathML. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any (working) rendering libraries for either MathML or OMML. If there aren't any pure .NET libraries for this, I'll settle for just about anything that I can call from a commandline to output a .PNG from either MathML or OMML.

In the processArray method I release it. NO 2: I get an array by simply calling array. As I'm not owner of this, I don't need to release it in the processArray method. Which is the best alternative, NO 1 or NO 2? Or is there a better solution for this?

• Entity Framework 4 relationship management in POCO Templates - More lazy than FixupCollection?

  I've been taking a look at EF4 POCO templates in beta 2. The FixupCollection looks fine for maintaining the model correctness after updating the relationship collection property (i.e. product.Orders it would set the order.Product reference ). But what about support for handling the scenario when some of those Order objects are removed from the context? The use-case of maintaining cascading deletes in the in-memory model. The old Typed DataSet model used to do this by performing the query through the container to derive the relationship results. Like the DataSet, this would require a reference to the ObjectContext inside the entity class so that it could query the top-level Order collection. Better support for Separation of Concerns in the ObjectContext would be required. It looks like EF is not suited to this use-case that DataSets did out of the box.... am I right?

• Winforms ComboBox autocomplete search multiple parts of string

  Very similar question to this one... http://stackoverflow.com/questions/522521/autocomplete-for-combobox-in-wpf-anywhere-in-text-not-just-beginning but my issue is for windows-forms rather than WPF. I have a winforms databound combox working great with autocomplete list coming from the data items in the combobox. Of course the client wants it to work "better", and that means that they want the autocomplete to work by searching and showing autocomplete options for any matching (contains()) string not just the starting string (startswith()) I know it's probably not just a property that can be set in the combobox, but can anyone point me in the right direction?
