• Slow to sync music files?

  I have created a folder in the Ubuntu One sync folder and called it music. I have added various albums and the folder has started to sync. However the files were added back in October and still only the folders have synced and no music files. I tested this service before and added a single music file directly into the Ubuntu One folder (no sub folders) and within a few days it synced, however it seems anything in sub folders seem to stall or take a very long time. My ubuntu One program always says syncing and the progression bar creeps, but still no files synced. I know there are issues with speed but a month and going to sync? I recently tested the same files with Dropbox and it took 9 hours. I have port forwarded the https (443) port both in the software firewall and in my router, I tried disabling both firewalls too, either way it makes no difference. I have also tried both from home and the office on different Ubuntu systems. Is there anything anyone has done to improve this service? I am trying to integrate Ubuntu One service into the office to share project files but the syncing is taking to long. I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.10 (fully updated, fresh install), I love Ubuntu and wish to continue to support it anyway I can, so a solution would be good :-) Any help would be appreciated. • Collision Resolution

  Hey all, I'm making a simple side-scrolling game, and I would appreciate some input! My collision detection system is a simple bounding box detection, so it's really easy to implement. However my collision resolution is ridiculous! Currently I have a little formula like this: if (colliding(firstObject,secondObject)) firstObject.resolve_collision(yAxisOffset); if (colliding(firstObject,secondObject)) firstObject.resolve_collision(xAxisOffset); where yAxisOffset is only set if the first object's previous y position was outside the second object's collision frame, respectively xAxisOffset as well. Now this is working great, in general. However there is a single problem. When I have a stack of objects and I push the first object against that stack, the first object get's "stuck," on the stack. What's I think is happening is the object's collision system checks and resolves for collisions based on creation time, so If I check one axis, then the other, the object will "sink" object directly along the checking axis. This sinking action causes the collision detection routine to think there's a gap between our position and the other object's position, and when I finally check the object that I've already sunk into, my object's position is resolved to it's original position... All this is great, and I'm sure if I bang my head against a wall long enough i'll come up with a working algorithm, but I'd rather not =). So what in the heck do you think I should do? How could I change my collision resolution system to fix this? • Locally redirect Domain1.com to Domain2.com/subdir on one computer

  I am running a FreeBSD server and I want to redirect a specific website domain to another domain including subdirectory. I want to bypass that domain to alter the XML results it returns. I tried the hosts file solution, but that way I can only redirect to an IP address without subdir. So that's no solution. Is there another way to solve this? Installing something on the server if needed is not a problem. Unless it's a heavy program.

• Happy New Year! Back to school :)

  A brand new year is upon us and it’s time to get cracking with WebMatrix again…and go back to school :).  Last year we ran a successful product walkthrough for WebMatrix Beta 2 with our students from around the world, gathering awesome feedback for the final version of WebMatrix which is coming soon!  I’d like to take this chance to thank all the students who participated in this effort…you have really helped make the final product much better than it would have been otherwise. • Perform shell operation through secure shell

  Is it possible to perform a shell operation from a bash script through a secure shell. Here is an example of why you may want to do this. Lets say you have a simple unix operating system that you need only build and run on, but you want to do all of the development on another machine. I want to write a bash script that has the following functionality: scp file to location on other machine ssh to other machine cd into correct directory make run program scp results to file on original computer exit ssh Is this remotely possible? (Pardon the Pun :p)

• Can't communicate using PuTTY, but can with Termite

  I'm trying to establish a serial connection to a peripheral from my PC's RS-232 port. Pretty simple stuff, and I've had not trouble doing it with countless peripherals before. And yet when I configure PuTTY to the right baud rate, stop bits, etc. I'll type in "*IDN?", press enter, and the unit won't reply. After going over my settings over and over again, I decided to try another terminal program, Termite. This time it worked like a charm. What puzzles me, and what I'm trying to figure out by posting this question, is why Termite would work when PuTTY did not despite the fact that they both have the same settings. So PuTTY is the odd one out.

• Script to list current user's mapped network drives

  I have a Windows XP/ Server 2003 environment here users have mapped different network drives themselves using arbitrary drive letters. Some of these users do not know how to tell the true UNC path of these drives, and I would like to be able to run a script or program to query those drives and show me the drive letters and the corresponding UNC paths. I would like to see output like "net use" in that user's context so that I can see what drives THEY have mapped. I would need to do this using my own admin account, which is where the difficulty lies. I understand this information would be stored in the HKCU registry? I would love to be able to do this in Powershell, but a vbscript or even a standalone executable would do. Thanks.

• Samba issue with sharing directories on NTFS/FAT32

  I have some strange problems with Samba server. I am using samba Version 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 10.10. I have two Windows XP machines, one on VirtualBox on Ubuntu and another office laptop. Windows machine on VirtualBox has no issues in accessing the shared folders, but the laptop is not able to access all the shared content. The issue faced on laptop is the following. Shared folders on ext3 drives have no issues in accessing, but the contents shared on NTFS and FAT32 drives (mounted ones) are not accessible. When I try to open the shared folder, it asks for user name and password, but doesn't accept when I provide it. (Even if I provide admin login details). I changed workgroup value to the domain_name in office laptop, but still the problem persists. • Writing an internal disk from IMG, what XP software to use?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?

• Efficient mapping layout in 2D side-scroller, and collisions between character and the world

  I haven't touched Visual Studio for a couple months now, but I was playing a game from the '90s toady and had an epiphany: I was looking for something what i didn't need, and I wasn't using what I knew correctly. One of those realizations was collision, so let me tell you a bit about my project that I was working on. The project's graphics looks like Mario or Dangerous Dave, etc., you get the idea - old-school pixels. So anyway I remember trying to think of something else than AABB for character form, but I couldn't think of anything. Perhaps I could get a suggestion for this? Another thing is the world - I don't want it to be just linear world, I want mountains, etc.. My idea is to use triangles, and no idea yet what to do if I want just part of the cube, say 3/4 or 2/4 or whatever. Hard-coding such things seems inefficient. P.S. I am not looking at the precision level offered by Box2D. Actually I remember trying to implement it at first, but I failed as my understanding of C++ wasn't advanced enough, as it'll be mentioned below. P.P.S. I am programming in C++, and I haven't done it for a couple months now. I have no means of testing it either, as my PC is broken down, and this one can barely run games from late '90s, not to speak about a compiler or a program with inefficient resource management... I am also not an expert (obviously), I don't even know if I can consider myself an average programmer. In short, I am simply curious about my thoughts and my past experience when programming the game. I may come back to it when my PC is fixed, I'm already filling a note about these things.

• Tomcat 6.0 service does not start: java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError

  I installed Tomcat on my Windows XP PC. But I can't get it to start. I start the service and I see the progress bar, but it fails. I installed the Java Runtime Environment Version 6 and created JRE_HOME Environment variable. (C:\Program Files\Java\jre6) Any ideas? Thanks. • Replay UDP Packet Capture

  I have a UDP packet capture which was streamed from Port1 on IP1 to Port2 on IP2 on network N1. I need to replay these packets on another network N2 from Port3 on IP3 to Port4 on IP4. I need to know what software to use in order to do this and how I would go about replaying these packets so that I can detect/capture them again in N2. So far, I've tried strictly replaying these packets using a program called Colasoft Packet Player, with little luck. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thank you in advance

• Is there a way to delay a forced reboot?

  I realize this is more appropriate for our company's admin group to field. However, pretend they are unresponsive just for the sake of discussion =) If my system is prompting me to reboot now or in a set time (say in 15 mins) is there a way to delay that even further? It is usually just an inconvenient time and I would like to delay beyond the stated time. (ex) System Restart Required: A newly installed program requires this computer to be restarted. • How Mature is Your Database Change Management Process?

As your team of developers and DBAs are working on the changes to the database to support your business-critical applications, how do these updates wend their way through from dev environments, possibly to QA, hopefully through pre-production and eventually to production in a controlled, reliable and repeatable way? In this article, I describe a model we use to try and understand the different stages that customers go through as their database change management processes mature, from the very basic and manual, through to advanced continuous delivery practices. I also provide a simple chart that will help you determine “How mature is our database change management process?” This process of managing changes to the database – which all of us who have worked in application/database development have had to deal with in one form or another – is sometimes known as Database Change Management (even if we’ve never used the term ourselves). And it’s a difficult process, often painfully so. Some developers take the approach of “I’ve no idea how my changes get live – I just write the stored procedures and add columns to the tables. It’s someone else’s problem to get this stuff live. I think we’ve got a DBA somewhere who deals with it – I don’t know, I’ve never met him/her”. I know I used to work that way. I worked that way because I assumed that making the updates to production was a trivial task – how hard can it be? Pause the application for half an hour in the middle of the night, copy over the changes to the app and the database, and switch it back on again? Voila! But somehow it never seemed that easy. And it certainly was never that easy for database changes. Why? Because you can’t just overwrite the old database with the new version. Databases have a state – more specifically 4Tb of critical data built up over the last 12 years of running your business, and if your quick hotfix happened to accidentally delete that 4Tb of data, then you’re “Looking for a new role” pretty quickly after the failed release. There are a lot of other reasons why a managed database change management process is important for organisations, besides job security, not least: Frequency of releases. Many business managers are feeling the pressure to get functionality out to their users sooner, quicker and more reliably. The new book (which I highly recommend) Lean Enterprise by Jez Humble, Barry O’Reilly and Joanne Molesky provides a great discussion on how many enterprises are having to move towards a leaner, more frequent release cycle to maintain their competitive advantage. It’s no longer acceptable to release once per year, leaving your customers waiting all year for changes they desperately need (and expect) Auditing and compliance. SOX, HIPAA and other compliance frameworks have demanded that companies implement proper processes for managing changes to their databases, whether managing schema changes, making sure that the data itself is being looked after correctly or other mechanisms that provide an audit trail of changes. We’ve found, at Red Gate that we have a very wide range of customers using every possible form of database change management imaginable. Everything from “Nothing – I just fix the schema on production from my laptop when things go wrong, and write it down in my notebook” to “A full Continuous Delivery process – any change made by a dev gets checked in and recorded, fully tested (including performance tests) before a (tested) release is made available to our Release Management system, ready for live deployment!”. And everything in between of course. Because of the vast number of customers using so many different approaches we found ourselves struggling to keep on top of what everyone was doing – struggling to identify patterns in customers’ behavior. This is useful for us, because we want to try and fit the products we have to different needs – different products are relevant to different customers and we waste everyone’s time (most notably, our customers’) if we’re suggesting products that aren’t appropriate for them. If someone visited a sports store, looking to embark on a new fitness program, and the store assistant suggested the latest $10,000 multi-gym, complete with multiple weights mechanisms, dumb-bells, pull-up bars and so on, then he’s likely to lose that customer. All he needed was a pair of running shoes! To solve this issue – in an attempt to simplify how we understand our customers and our offerings – we built a model. This is a an attempt at trying to classify our customers in to some sort of model or “Customer Maturity Framework” as we rather grandly term it, which somehow simplifies our understanding of what our customers are doing. The great statistician, George Box (amongst other things, the “Box” in the Box-Jenkins time series model) gave us the famous quote: “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful” We’ve taken this quote to heart – we know it’s a gross over-simplification of the real world of how users work with complex legacy and new database developments. Almost nobody precisely fits in to one of our categories. But we hope it’s useful and interesting. There are actually a number of similar models that exist for more general application delivery. We’ve found these from ThoughtWorks/Forrester, from InfoQ and others, and initially we tried just taking these models and replacing the word “application” for “database”. However, we hit a problem. From talking to our customers we know that users are far less further down the road of mature database change management than they are for application development. As a simple example, no application developer, who wants to keep his/her job would develop an application for an organisation without source controlling that code. Sure, he/she might not be using an advanced Gitflow branching methodology but they’ll certainly be making sure their code gets managed in a repo somewhere with all the benefits of history, auditing and so on. But this certainly isn’t the case (yet) for the database – a very large segment of the people we speak to have no source control set up for their databases whatsoever, even at the most basic level (for example, keeping change scripts in a source control system somewhere). By the way, if this is you, Red Gate has a great whitepaper here, on the barriers people face getting a source control process implemented at their organisations. This difference in maturity is the same as you move in to areas such as continuous integration (common amongst app developers, relatively rare for database developers) and automated release management (growing amongst app developers, very rare for the database). So, when we created the model we started from scratch and biased the levels of maturity towards what we actually see amongst our customers. But, what are these stages? And what level are you? The table below describes our definitions for four levels of maturity – Baseline, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. As I say, this is a model – you won’t fit any of these categories perfectly, but hopefully one will ring true more than others. Sometimes use a product like SQL Compare or similar to do this Any tests that we might have are run manually Level D2 – Beginner Have some ad-hoc DB version control such as manually adding upgrade scripts to a version control system Attempt is made to keep production in sync with development environments There is some documentation and planning of manual deployments Some basic automated DB testing in process Level D3 – Intermediate The database is fully version-controlled with a product like Red Gate SQL Source Control or SSDT Database environments are managed Production environment schema is reproducible from the source control system There are some automated tests Have looked at using migration scripts for difficult database refactoring cases Level D4 – Advanced Using continuous integration for database changes Build, testing and deployment of DB changes carried out through a proper database release process Fully automated tests Production system is monitored for fast feedback to developers   Does this model reflect your team at all?   My question is quite simple. I get this output when checking the total amount of space I'm using on my Walkman. david@Milton:/media$ du -b --max-depth=0 WALKMAN/ 14823290693 WALKMAN/ david@Milton:/media$ du -k --max-depth=0 WALKMAN/ 14523776 WALKMAN/ Last I checked, 14,523,776 KB * 1024 = 14,872,646,624 B, not 14,823,290,693. Dividing the two, their "K" unit seems to be equal to about 1020.62 rather than 1024 as advertised. This is causing some errors in the program I wrote to sync my Walkman, so it fills up faster than it claims to. Can anyone explain this discrepency?

• Outlook collapses IMAP folders by default

  I recently switched my mail account from POP3 to IMAP and created server-side rules to help me manage my mail better. I use Outlook 2007 as a mail client. For some reason, it seems then ever since I switched to IMAP, all my folders are collapsed by default. Since my folder tree goes down 4 levels, this is pretty annoying. I don't know any better than Outlook remembering my folder preferences, but it seems to forget them as soon as I close the program now. Is there any cause for this, and more importantly, is there a known fix for this problem?

• Can't run telnet in console opened by Autohotkey

  I have enabled the telnet client on my Windows 7 64-bit machine and if I open the start menu and launch cmd from there I can run telnet. I normally use the keyboard shortcut Win-C, implemented by this AutoHotkey snippet to open a console. #c::Run, C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe For some strange reason when I try to run telnet in a console window opened this way I get Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Steve\Documentstelnet 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Running path in any console, regardless of how it was opened produces the same output. Can anyone shed any light on why telnet might run in one console but not the other?

  Using Powerpoint viewer (2010), I want to show a Powerpoint show on my secondary display, i.e. the projector, not on my laptop screen. However, Powerpoint viewer always does full screen presentations on the primary display, even if I move the Powerpoint viewer program to the secondary display. Powerpoint and multiple monitors shows how to configure which display a Powerpoint presentation is shown on for the full version of Powerpoint. But how do I do this for Powerpoint viewer? One workaround is to clone monitors rather than having separate monitors displaying different things, but I'm still wondering if there's a better way.

• Install Chromium OS to SECOND internal drive on EEE 901?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?

• determine what is invoking refresh/F5 in WinXP?

  My laptop recently started invoking refresh (F5) on its own. Works OK from start-up/reboot but then for no apparent reason will start refreshing Initially thought it was a web page scripting issue, as I noticed it while browsing. But then found it occurs with the browser closed. Not sure if this could be a hardware issue, or some silly virus, or just a bug? Would like a utility that could tell me what device/program is invoking the refresh. Any ideas? thanks

• SSL FTP fails on Windows 7 but not Windows XP clients

  We currently use a free SSL-FTP client called Move-It-Freely to transmit data from a custom data entry program at over forty facilities scattered around the state to our central server. Under XP, it works flawlessly. Some facilities have upgraded to Windows 7. On these machines, uploads (transfers to us) work, downloads (transfers from us to them) fail. Replacing the Windows 7 machine with an XP machine solves the problem. We have also verified that the network firewall settings have not changed. This problem persists even if Windows firewall is not running. We were able to remote into one of the Windows 7 machines to verify that the Windows firewall was indeed turned off. We cannot replicate the problem on our own Windows 7 machines, and are at a loss of how to fix this feature for our customers. The data contain health-related information, and needs to be encrypted (hence SSL-FTP.) Despite hours spent on Google, we cannot find a solution.
