  • Tales of a corrupt SQL log

    Warning: Im a simple dev, not an all powerful DBA with godly powers. This morning, one of my sites was down and DNN reported a problem with the database.  A quick series of tests revealed that the culprit was a corrupted log file. Easy fix I said, I have daily backups so its just a mater of restoring a good copy of the database and log files.  Well, I found out thats not exactly true.  You see, for this database, I have daily file backups and these are not database backups created...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • Best suited multi-function printer for Linux usage from a few choices

    I want a cheap multi-function printer for Linux usage. I'm looking for rock solid scanning and printing that works with big images. I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean. Some choices I have are: Samsung SCX-4300 HP LaserJet M1120 MFP Samsung SCX-4500 Canon i-SENSYS MF4010 Brother DCP-7040 I am also interested in opinions what printer communication language is best for Linux usage for cheap printers. PostScript is nice, of course, but low-end PostScript printers often have problems when printing complex (large) PostScript files. It seems Samsung printers use SPL for communication, HP uses XQX and ZJS, then there's ofcourse PCL.

    HI every one ,I have account with one of the hosting company, and i did my project in asp.net and I used MySQL for the database. the hosting company is not giving me the full privileges to create new user or to create new stored procedure!!! this is what they said for me: Due to the shared nature of our environment we had to make some modifications to your procedure (namely the definer). We also had to review your procedure to determine if it would be compatible with our environment. While your procedures will work (via phpMyAdmin or some other interface), it is unlikely they will be accessible via the Connector/.NET (ADO.NET) that your application is likely using. This is due to a security restriction with how that connector works in shared environments. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/connector-net-programming-stored.html "Note When you call a stored procedure, the command object makes an additional SELECT call to determine the parameters of the stored procedure. You must ensure that the user calling the procedure has the SELECT privilege on the mysql.proc table to enable them to verify the parameters. Failure to do this will result in an error when calling the procedure." Unfortunately, giving read privileges on the mysql.proc table will give you access to the data of our other customers and that is not an acceptable risk. If your application can only work using stored procedures, then MSSQL will probably be the better option for your site. I apologize for the inconvenience and the wait to have this ticket completed.     I needed to take columns A, B, and C and compare D, E and F. Here's an example: A B C D E F Jump Smith 5 Jump Smith 8 Run Naylor 2 Swim Fran 4 Swim Fran 7 Jog Dylan 1 Jump Fran 3 Jog Smith 4 So I want to match column A and B with D and E but still have both number related C for 2011 and F for 2012. Can anyone please help with that formula? My data is from A3-C4344 and D3 - D4470.

  • Searchable tags in Excel?

    I'm building a database of spiders, organizing them by name, country, and region within that country. The problem is that many of the spiders exist in multiple countries and regions within that country. I want to be able to sort spiders by either country, or region, without having to enter a duplicate entry for every country or region that spider exists in. For example: Say Spider A exists in the USA and Australia. In the USA it lives in the South and North West. In Australia it lives in New South Wales. Is there a way I can make one entry for this spider, but tag it so it will show up when I search for spiders in USASouth or AustraliaNew South Wales?

  • backup of TFS with DPM 2007 - different backup times

    I have DPM set up to back up my TFS server every 30 minutes, the reason being it's a way better interface than the quirky SQL backup interface. I also do a full backup nightly using an SQL maintenance job. My thinking is I would use DPM to restore my databases in case of losing my database and the nightly full backup would be a "just in case" the DPM restore doesn't work. I was thinking a little harder about this set up today and started to think about the fact that the DPM backup of the individual databases happens at different 30 min windows.. i.e. one happens at 13h30, another at 13h34 etc. Would this difference in time be a problem when it comes to restoring the TFS server? If I restore the databases and they are from different times, will this create corruption with pointers in one database pointing to missing items in the other database.. do the databases even rely on each other or are they completely interdependant. Lastly, how would SQL (log) backup cope with this?

  • determine what is invoking refresh/F5 in WinXP?

    My laptop recently started invoking refresh (F5) on its own. Works OK from start-up/reboot but then for no apparent reason will start refreshing Initially thought it was a web page scripting issue, as I noticed it while browsing. But then found it occurs with the browser closed. Not sure if this could be a hardware issue, or some silly virus, or just a bug? Would like a utility that could tell me what device/program is invoking the refresh. Any ideas? thanks

I hava a cell A1 that has date and time and I want to conditionally format its adjecent cell if the value of cell A1 is greater than 3 days compared to today, then cell A2 should show as "Follow-up Required" and cell colour should turn red no. if cell value of A1 is less than 3 days compared to today, no action is required.   • Convience of mySQL over xml

    Currently I use XML to store specific information to correctly load a few things such as a list of specfied characters, scenes and music, Once more I use JAXB in combination with standard compression/decompression(ZIP) functionality to store a list of extrenous data. This data is called to add functionality to the character, somewhat like Skills in an RPG. Each skill is seperated into its own XML file with a grandlist which contains the names of each file with their extensions omitted and zipped in folder that gets encrypted. At first using xml was working fine however as the skill list grow i worry about its stability. I was wondering if I should begin storing the data in mySQL. Originally I planned to simply convert everything to JSON over xml but i think possibly mySQL would be a better move. Can anyone inform me of the key difference and pros and cons of each I guess i'm looking for the best way to store the data more conviently and would be easier to operate on. The data is mostly primatives and strings and the only arraylist of values i have i can just concat into a single field and parse later

    I have some email network data in Excel as a edgelist meaning I have columns Vertex1, Vertex2, and then N columns of properties of that edge like how many emails were sent from one person to another. For each row in the data, Vertex1 is the source of a message, and Vertex2 is the target, so edges are directed. Here's some sample data Vertex1 Vertex2 nMessages Bob Cindy 12 Cindy Bob 3 Bob Mike 11 Cindy Mike 1 I'm trying to calculate a geometric mean of the form gm = sqrt[(# of edges ij)*(# of edges ji)] So gm for Bob and Cindy is gm = sqrt[(messages from Bob to Cindy)*(messages from Cindy to Bob)] or sqrt(12*3) = 6. Is there a way to make that a formula in Excel?

  • On what should i not be pennywise buying a machine for SqlServer 2008?

    Hi, i'm going to do a project for a client and i'll be hosting the database server myself. Normally it would be on my dev machine, but there will also be data pushed into it during developing and testing, so i would like to setup a dedicated test sql server. But, as you might guess, i can't afford to go to Dell and buy one mega 16 core 16 GIG 10 TB raid 5 machine (wow, that sounds cool) So i have to save the money somewhere... the hardware only has to live for a year (longer is nice of course), and the sql server won't be hit too hard: i guess the average server will only see it as a cough once in a while. But i do want the machine to be a bit performant: if it does get some data, it must be a bit responsive. So my question is were can i leave out the expensive parts: is 2 GB enough, or must i take 4GB, is an average processor enough or should it be a top of the bill? Is Sql server a large resource user or is a simple desktop pc good enough? It wil run on win2008 by the way.

    I am trying to use the Export-Mailbox cmdlet to export a mailbox to PST file but i get an error that i'm running on a 64bit machine and must use a 32 bit etc etc.. I have a Windows 7 Pro 32bit PC joined to the domain with the exchange server, and outlook 32bit installed. When i try to install Exchange 2007 32bit management console only, i'm told that i can't install the managemnet tools on a Windows 7 PC. Can someone please advise if this is correct setup to be able to run the export-mailbox function to dump the mailboxes into PST files. Thank you

    For learning and understanding purpose, I currently want to try to make a small relational DBMS with simple features like (for now) only sequential reading/writing and CREATE TABLE, INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE and DELETE management. I am currently on the "think" part of the project and I am stuck on the way to store the read data in memory. First I was thinking of putting them properly on a structure, but the problem is that tables are all different, know the type of each column is not an issue, but I am not sure C provide a way to make fully dynamic structure. My second and current idea is to make a simple char array of the required length and just get the data by order with cast. But I am not sure if it is the good way to do that part, so I wanted to ask for your opinion and advices about that. From this web application I've developed two verticalization used from online users. In future i expect hundreds users simultanousley. Our company has different locations. Each site use its own database. The web application needs to retrieve information from all existing databases. Currently there are 3 database, but it's not excluded in the future expansion of new offices. My question then is: What is the best strategy for a web application to retrieve information from different databases (which have the same schema) whereas the main objective performance data access and high fault tolerance? There are case studies in the literature that I can take as an example? Do you know some good documents to study? Do you have any tips to implement this task so efficient? Intuitively I would say that two possible strategy are: perform queries from different sources in real time and aggregate data on the fly; create a repository that contains the union of the entities of interest and perform queries directly on repository;

  • How to require a cell input if another cell has a value

    I'm trying to edit the VBA for one of my workbooks so that If there is a value in column A, then a value for column C is required or else the file won't save, but i'm having some trouble with this. I can get excel to check a cell for any input and require it have input, but I need it to check if a different cell has an input before requiring input. This is because not all of the lines in my spreadsheet will be used all of the time, but some people forget to put very important pieces of information in the spreadsheet which throws some of our balances off. An SKU is entered on the sheet when we switch to a new one, and I want the program to make sure there is an amount of product in a given cell every time a new SKU is entered onto the sheet. Thanks.
