• Replace %26 in htaccess to %2526

  I would like htaccess to rewrite example.com/something_%26_else into example.com/something_%2526_else. I'm importing a bunch of pages that have ampersands in the title from Mediawiki. These are encoded as %26. Drupal, for various reasons, has decided double encode the url it to have it become %2526. I simply can't create the alisis within Drupal so I have to use htaccess This is what I have as my rule so far as RewriteRule ^w/([^%26]+)\%26(.*)$ w/$1\%2526$2 [R=301] I asked this question three months ago on stackexchange and was not able to get it working. I tried hiring a contractor for this but was unable to find one. So this my last ditch effort before I completely give up. I really appreciate the help. All the best, Patrick

Even for small details, such as function definitions, control flow, and variable names, I spend unusually long periods perusing the benefits and trade-offs of my choices. I feel like I am losing a lot of efficiency by spending my hours on insignificant details like these. Even though, I know in the back of my mind that I can change these things if my current design doesn't work out, I have trouble deciding firmly on one choice. • Transferring at a large software company: ask boss before or after?

  Out of college I joined a large, well-known software company's consulting arm. I've gained lots of experience with some of the company's products but would like to start doing more development work rather than implementation work (traveling less would be nice, too!). The company has some product development positions that I think I could be a good fit for, but I'm unsure of how to bring it up with my manager. After a bit Googling, there are many conflicted answers on how best to handle transferring departments. When should I tell my current manager that I am interested in pursuing other positions in the company? Before or after applying?

• How to get pngcrush to overwrite original files?

  I've read through man pngcrush and it seems that there is no way to crush a PNG file and save it over the original. I want to compress several folders worth of PNGs so it would be useful to do it all with one command! Currently I am doing pngcrush -q -d . *.png then manually cut-pasting the files from the tmp directory to the original folder. So I guess using mv might be the best way to go? Any better ideas?

• OpenGL Performance Questions

  This subject, as with any optimisation problem, gets hit on a lot, but I just couldn't find what I (think) I want. A lot of tutorials, and even SO questions have similar tips; generally covering: Use GL face culling (the OpenGL function, not the scene logic) Only send 1 matrix to the GPU (projectionModelView combination), therefore decreasing the MVP calculations from per vertex to once per model (as it should be). Use interleaved Vertices Minimize as many GL calls as possible, batch where appropriate And possibly a few/many others. I am (for curiosity reasons) rendering 28 million triangles in my application using several vertex buffers. I have tried all the above techniques (to the best of my knowledge), and received almost no performance change. Whilst I am receiving around 40FPS in my implementation, which is by no means problematic, I am still curious as to where these optimisation 'tips' actually come into use? My CPU is idling around 20-50% during rendering, therefore I assume I am GPU bound for increasing performance. Note: I am looking into gDEBugger at the moment Cross posted at StackOverflow

• Uninstall ubuntu from external hard drive + remove bootloader from internal hd

  I have created a bootable usb stick with linuxlive and Ubuntu.I then tried to install ubuntu on my external harddrive. However I guess I wrongly picked the drive where the boot section is installed, it now is installed on my internal (C:) drive. When I open the bios bootsequence it says Ubuntu 2 times? As if the boot is installed twice? I'd like to uninstall Ubuntu from my external drive but most important: I don't want Grub to be start up on my PC. I tried booting in Windows 8 recovery mode and used the following commands: bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot However the ubuntu choices wont disappear? I then tried to add bootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd to the commands but somehow this wont work either. Anyone got some ideas? Thank you in advance! Best regards, Bart

• Exporting the frames in a Flash CS5.5 animation and possibly creating the spritesheet

  Some time ago, I asked a question here to know what would be the best way to create animations when making an Android game and I got great answers. I did what people told me there by exporting each frame from a Flash animation manually and creating the spritesheet also manually and it was very tedious. Now, I changed project and this one is going to contain a lot more animations and I feel like there has to be a better way to to export each frame individually and possibly create my spritesheets in an automated manner. My designer is using Flash CS5.5 and I was wondering if all of this was possible, as I can't find an option or code examples on how to save each frame individually. If this is not possible using Flash, please recommend me another program that can be used to create animations without having to create each frame on its own. I'd rather keep Flash as my designer knows how to use it and it's giving great results.

• Optical Illusion Freezes Water In Place [Video]

  This clever optical illusion uses sound frequency and a digital camera to “freeze” water in time and space. YouTube user MrBibio explains the hack: Creating the illusion of a static flow of water using sound. Of course this isn’t my idea and plenty more refined examples already exist. I tried this same experiment years ago but using a strobe light, but it’s harsh on the eyes after a while and hard to video successfully. It only dawned on me shortly before making this that for video purposes, no strobe light is required. This is because the frame rate and shutter of the camera is doing a similar job to the strobe. The speaker-as-frequency-generator model is definitely easier on the eyes than similar experiments that rely on high-speed strobes. • Is the term "web portal" obselete?

  Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong place: I've looked at all the programming-related boards and this one seems like the best fit - correct me if I'm wrong. My boss uses the term "portal" for the project I work on all the time. To me, the word makes me think of Yahoo in the late 90s. Does the word "portal" have old-school connotations, or is it just me? Do you think it's ok to use it, and not drag our client's perception of the product down into the middle-ages? Or again, am I just being weird?

• What word processor can manage left and right pages separately?

  I was after a word processor that can manage left and right pages separately so I can have my text on the right pages and my illustrations on the left pages. I know LibeOffice can set "left page" and "right page" formats, but there is no simple way to make the text jump from right page to right page when writing. I don't know what would be the best way to do that, but I guess I need an app that is designed for writing books and do that kind of thing, or an app that can associate a page format with an object format (so the "illustration" format can be exclusively associated with "left page" format, and "text body" exclusively associated with "right page", for example). Or is there an extension for LO or OOo out there that I didn't hear about? Cheers!

• IOUC Summit: Open Arms and Cheese Shoes

  Last week's International Oracle User Group Committee (IOUC) Summit at Oracle HQ was a high point of the past year, for a number of reasons: A "quorum" of Java User Group leaders, several Java Champions among them, were in attendance (Bert Breeman, Stephan Janssen, Dan Sline, Stephen Chin, Bruno Souza, Van Riper, and others), and it was great to get face time with them. Their guidance and advice about JavaOne and other things are always much appreciated. Mix in some Oracle ACE Directors (Debra Lilley, Dan Morgan, Sten Vesterli, and others), and you really have the making of a dynamic group. Stephan describes it best: "We (the JUG Leaders) discovered that behind the more formal dress code the ACE directors are actually as crazy as we are." (See link below for more.) Thanks to Bert's (NLJug) kindness, I am now the proud owner of a bonafide, straight-from-the-NL cheese shoe. How the heck did he get this through security? • User Experience Guidance for Developers: Anti-Patterns

  Picked this up from a recent Dublin Google Technology User Group meeting: Android App Mistakes: Avoiding the Anti-Patterns by Mark Murphy, CommonsWare Interesting approach of "anti-patterns" aimed at mobile developers (in this case Android), looking at the best way to use code and what's in the SDK while combining it with UX guidance (the premise being the developer does the lot). Interestingly, the idea came through that developers need to stop trying to make one O/S behave like another--on UX grounds. Also, pretty clear that a web-based paradigm is being promoting for Android (translators tell me that translating an Android app reminded them of translating web pages too). Haven't see the "anti"-approach before, developer cookbooks and design patterns sure. Check out the slideshare presentation.

• Starting a guest session from the login screen

  I was wondering what is the best way to start the guest session from the login screen (GDM). Currently, I created a new user called 'ubuntu-guest' (has to be something other than 'guest'). Then added the following script to the Startup Applications. #!/bin/bash /usr/share/gdm/guest-session/guest-session-launch & /usr/bin/gnome-session-save --logout The problem with this method, is that when you log in as 'ubuntu-guest', you have to start up two gnome sessions: one for 'ubuntu-guest' and one for the actual guest account. Please let me know if you have any other better ideas. Thanks!

• Methods of learning / teaching programming

  When I was in school, I had a difficult time getting into programming because of a catch-22 in the learning process: I didn't know how to write anything because I didn't know what keywords and commands meant. For example (as a student, I would think), "what does this using namespace std; thing do anyway? I didn't know what keywords and commands meant because I hadn't written anything. This basically led me to spending countless long night cursing the compiler as I made minor tweaks to my assignments until they would compile (and hopefully perform whatever operation they were supposed to). Is there a teaching/learning method that anyone uses that gets around this catch-22? I am trying to make this non-argumentative, which is why I don't want to know the 'best' method, but rather which methods exist.

• Turn-based Strategy Loop

  I'm working on a strategy game. It's turn-based and card-based (think Dominion-style), done in a client, with eventual AI in the works. I've already implemented almost all of the game logic (methods for calculations and suchlike) and I'm starting to work on the actual game loop. What is the "best" way to implement a game loop in such a game? Should I use a simple "while gameActive" loop that keeps running until gameActive is False, with sections that wait for player input? Or should it be managed through the UI with player actions determining what happens and when? Any help is appreciated. I'm doing it in Python (for now at least) to get my Python skills up a bit, although the language shouldn't matter for this question.

• How to achieve a Gaussian Blur effect for shadows in LWJGL/Slick2D?

  I am currently trying to implement shadows into my game, and after a lot of searching in the interwebs I came to the conclusion that drawing hard edged shadows to a low resolution pass combined with a Gaussian blur effect would fit best and make a good compromise between performance and looks - even though theyre not 100% physically accurate. Now my problem is, that I dont really know how to implement the Gaussian blur part. Its not difficult to draw shadows to a low resolutions buffer image and then stretch it which makes it more smooth, but I need to add the Gaussian blur effect. I have searched a lot on that and found some approachs for GLSL, some even here, but none of them really helped it. My game is written in Java using Slick2D/LWJGL and I would appreciate any help or approaches for an algorithm or maybe even an existing library to achieve that effect. • Why is there a large discrepancy between the stackoverflow tag frequency and the TIOBE Index?

  By recently looking at the TIOBE Programming Community Index (Sep 2012) I noticed the following order: C Java Objective-C C++ C# PHP When looking at the tag frequencies of stackoverflow however, the situation is as follows: C# Java PHP JS Android jquery (JS) iphone (Objective-C) C++ (Java takes the lead when accounting for Android tagged posts w/o a Java tag). JavaScript also likely has surpassed PHP in total numbers of programmers? I realize the tag-frequencies may not be the best indicator, but it is likely a sufficient measure nonetheless. What am I missing that explains this discrepancy, especially for ANSI C?

• Web services, J2EE, Spring, DB integration project ideas - maybe data mining related?

  I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• Starting off with web dev with php

  I'm currently working with Java / C++. I'm interested in web development and am planning to shift my stream. I heard that PHP is a good platform to start off and also it does not require that much of knowledge in technologies like JSP / Servlets or frameworks like springs / struts / hibernate. I have basic ideas about HTML and Javascript as well.
