• Spring Security - Persistent Remember Me Issue

  I've been trying to track down why Spring Security isn't creating the Spring Security remember me cookie (SPRING_SECURITY_REMEMBER_ME_COOKIE). At first glance, the logs make it seem like the login is failing, but the login is actually successful in the sense that if I navigate to a page that requires authentication I am not redirected back to the login page. However, the logs appear to be saying the login credentials are invalid. I'm using Spring 3.0.1, Spring Security 3.0.1, and Google App Engine 1.3.1. Any ideas as to what is going on? • jQuery doesn't work in IE8?

  Hi, I am working on a site here: mfm.treethink.net All the jquery works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari but on IE8 it gives me errors and the banner at the top doesn't work (which uses the crossSlide jQuery plugin) and as well the image rollovers don't work with the colour change. IE8 is telling me that the errors are on lines 53, 134 and 149 in the source, all of those lines are where the jquery function is declared. $(document).ready(function(){ I am running jquery 1.4. Oddly enough, the other piece of jQuery I have on that page works, the artist browse/select menu on the right. But the banner and image rollovers don't.   Hi, I have problem while using jquery maskedinput with asp.net textbox. • Detecting 'stealth' web-crawlers

  What options are there to detect web-crawlers that do not want to be detected? (I know that listing detection techniques will allow the smart stealth-crawler programmer to make a better spider, but I do not think that we will ever be able to block smart stealth-crawlers anyway, only the ones that make mistakes.) I'm not talking about the nice crawlers such as googlebot and Yahoo! Slurp. I consider a bot nice if it: identifies itself as a bot in the user agent string reads robots.txt (and obeys it) I'm talking about the bad crawlers, hiding behind common user agents, using my bandwidth and never giving me anything in return. There are some trapdoors that can be constructed updated list (thanks Chris, gs): Adding a directory only listed (marked as disallow) in the robots.txt, Adding invisible links (possibly marked as rel="nofollow"?), style="display: none;" on link or parent container placed underneath another element with higher z-index detect who doesn't understand CaPiTaLiSaTioN, detect who tries to post replies but always fail the Captcha. detect GET requests to POST-only resources detect interval between requests detect order of pages requested detect who (consistently) requests https resources over http detect who does not request image file (this in combination with a list of user-agents of known image capable browsers works surprisingly nice) Some traps would be triggered by both 'good' and 'bad' bots. you could combine those with a whitelist: It trigger a trap It request robots.txt? It doest not trigger another trap because it obeyed robots.txt One other important thing here is: Please consider blind people using a screen readers: give people a way to contact you, or solve a (non-image) Captcha to continue browsing. What methods are there to automatically detect the web crawlers trying to mask themselves as normal human visitors. Update The question is not: How do I catch every crawler. The question is: How can I maximize the chance of detecting a crawler. Some spiders are really good, and actually parse and understand html, xhtml, css javascript, VB script etc... I have no illusions: I won't be able to beat them. You would however be surprised how stupid some crawlers are. With the best example of stupidity (in my opinion) being: cast all URLs to lower case before requesting them. And then there is a whole bunch of crawlers that are just 'not good enough' to avoid the various trapdoors.

• Javascript Noob: How to emulate slideshow on front page by automatically cycling through existing ho

  hey everyone. hope you could help me out am working on this website and i've finished all the hover effects i like - they're exactly how i want them to be: http://s5ent.brinkster.net/beta3.asp - try hovering over the four links and you'll see a very simple fade effect at work, which degrades into a regular css hover without javascript. what i plan to do is to make the page look like it had a fancy slideshow going on upon loading and while idle, and i wanted to achieve that by capitalizing on the existing hover styling/behavior of the main page links instead of using another script to create the effect from scratch. to do this i imagined i'll need a script that emulates a hover action on each link at regular time intervals once the page has loaded, starting from left to right (footcare, lawn & equipment, about us, contact us), looping through all 4 links indefinitely (footcare, lawn & equipment, about us, contact us, footcare, lawn& equipment, etc.) but pauses when any of them have been actually hovered over by a viewer and resumes from wherever the user left off upon mouseout. hope you get my drift... i also want to achieve this without unnecessarily disrupting the current html. so i guess everything will have to be done by scripting as much as possible.. i'm very new to javascript and jquery. as you can see at s5ent.brinkster.net/beta3.1-autohover.asp, the following script i made works wrong: it hovers-on all of them at the same time and doesn't hover-out anymore. when you try to actually hover into and out of each link the link just comes back on: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var speed = 5000; var run = setInterval('rotate()', speed); }); function rotate() { $('.lilevel1 a').each(function(i) { $(this).mouseover(); }); } </script> it's just gross. aside from the fact that this last bit of script isn't even working in ie. could you please help me make this thing happen? that'd be really sweet, guys. i know there are tonsa geniuses out there who could whip this up in no time. or if you have a better way to go about it by all means kindly lemme know. thanks guys, hope you're all havin a blast.

• click events issue in jquery.

  I don't know if the title explain this situation well. Below is a code i wrote to create div elements when the button is pressed. Then By clicking on any of the created divs, we can change the div background by choosing a color from the drop down box. However if i click on another div and tried to change the color by selecting another color from the drop down, the previously clicked divs also gets affected by the new color. Why is this happening. I only want the selected div to change color, without affecting the previously clicked divs. I read allot of threads on this site, some of which talks about unbinding clicks, but I'm unable to solve the problem. • How does this ajax call persist DOM changes in the browser cache?

  For the purpose of the question I need to create a simple fictitious scenario. I have the following trivial page with one link, call it page A: <a class="red-anchor" onclick="change_color(event);" href="http://mysite.com/b/">B</a> With the associated Javascript function: function change_color(e) { var event = e || window.event; var link = event.target; link.className = "green-anchor"; } And I have the appropriate CSS to make the anchor red or green based on the classname. This is working. That is, when I click the anchor it changes color from red to green, which is briefly visible before the browser loads page B. But if I then use the BACK button to return to page A I get different behavior in different browsers. In Safari, the anchor is still green (desired behavior) In Firefox it reverts to red I imagine that Safari is somehow updating its cached version of the page, whereas Firefox isn't. So my first question is: is there any way to get FF to update the cached page, or is something else happening here? Secondly: I have a different implementation where I use an ajax call. In this I set the class of the anchor using a session variable, something like... <a class="<?php echo $_SESSION["color"]; ?>" ...[snip]... >B</a> And the javascript function makes an additional ajax call that changes the "color" session variable. In this case both Safari and Firefox work as expected. When going back from B to A the color is still green. But I can't for the life of me figure out why it should be different to the non-ajax case. I have tried many different permutations and for it to work on FF the "color" session variable MUST change (i.e. the ajax call itself is not somehow reloading the cache). But on coming BACK, the page is being reloaded from the cache (verified in Firebug), so how is the page even accessing this session variable if it isn't reprocessing the page and running that fragment of php in the anchor? I figure there must be something fundamental here that I am not understanding. Any insight would be much appreciated.

• Squid proxy not serving modified html content

  I'm trying to use squid to modify the page content of web page requests. I followed the upside-down-ternet tutorial which showed instructions for how to flip images on pages. I need to change the actual html of the page. I've been trying to do the same thing as in the tutorial, but instead of editing the image I'm trying to edit the html page. Below is a php script I'm using to try to do it. All jpg images get flipped, but the content on the page does not get edited. • jquery.ui sortable using a table and item:tr , placeholder difficulties

  Hi I would really like to give some sortable goodness to the myriad old tables I have created. A little work has a proof of concept behaving ok. My one sticking point is that the placeholder does not work at all in IE 7 when using item:TR . It works OK in FF. I can make an perform correctly.   Hello! I have this table layout. I want to align the whole content to the right. So i'm using one cell with width: 100%;. Usually everything looks good and nice. But there is something, which i don't understand. If the content in cell, which has colspan, becomes bigger than normal cell in this column (you can test this by clicking Click to test button), it brakes whole layout. This happens on Chrome, Safari 4 and 5, IE8, but on Opera, FF and IE7 is OK.   I am thinking someone may have run across this one, but not sure. From a high level, I am trying to roll over a input [type=text] and display a tool tip (with the contained value) using the plugin available at http://bassitance.de. I have to use titles and classes for validation on the specific elements, so I put a blank div to hold the input [type=text] value for the roll over. Issue: It won't hold the value of 2 text boxes at once. Once I put a value in the box on the right, the tooltip on the left goes away. Same thing if I switch it aroun. I can't keep a tooltip on more than one element. • Visual Web Developer 2008 Express and XHTML 1.1 (not applying)

  Hello. I may be missing something since I'm not used to work with IDEs for web development, so please understand if I'm doing something stupid. I've picked a copy of Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# and VB to try and learn this thing quickly. I'm no HTML guru, but I know something about the DTDs and I want to either use XHTML 1.0 Strict or XHTML 1.1 while learning the ins and outs of ASP.NET. Following the book (just started actually), I'm not having any trouble understanding the concepts, since I have a C# background, but what I don't understand is how VWD goes about applying the schema you select for validation. The book explains that the drop-down list on the toolbar is enough to set this, so that's what I did: I've selected XHTML 1.1 (since there is no 1.0 strict option, what I find really odd) and then started the project. The thing is that the code generated automatically for the Default page had the XHTML 1.0 transitional DTD. Every other page added had the same DTD, even though XHTML 1.1 is still the selected schema in the drop-down list. I decided to test it out and there it was: inserting some text in the design view and then applying a bold formatting just inserted < b tags on the code. Changing color does add a span tag with added CSS though. What I want to know is: if I want strict XHTML (or 1.1) should I just code it manually? Or is there a "fix" for this problem (having a schema selected but not applied by the IDE)? Am I missing something really easy and dumb? I have no problem with coding it manually - I actually prefer doing that. The thing is that I really wanna try this WYSIWYG approach for once, since some developers swear by it. Plus I don't know yet if I'll need special tags for ASP.NET, so I think having them inserted automatically should be the best practice. I couldn't find any similar problems around (MSDN, Google, here), and as far as the book goes (up to the point I've read), this is the expected VWD behavior, which I find suspect at least. • Galleria jQuery plugin briefly shows all images in IE 7 & 8

  I'm using the galleria jQuery plugin on a site. When the gallery first loads, all of the images appear briefly & vertically in ie 7 & 8. This doesn't happen when i isolate the gallery, only when i put it on a somewhat heavy page. This leads me to believe that it happens when the page is a little slow to load. Does anybody know a way to fix this? I feel like an overflow: hidden should fix this, but I've applied it along with a height in every container I could think of. Anybody have any ideas? • Does my fat-client application belong in the MVC pattern?

  The web-based application I’m currently working on is growing arms and legs! It’s basically an administration system which helps users to keep track of bookings, user accounts, invoicing etc. It can also be accessed via a couple of different websites using a fairly crude API. The fat-client design loosely follows the MVC pattern (or perhaps MVP) with a php/MySQL backend, Front Controller, several dissimilar Page Controllers, a liberal smattering of object-oriented and procedural Models, a confusing bunch of Views and templates, some JavaScripts, CSS files and Flash objects. The programmer in me is a big fan of the principle of “Separation of Concerns” and on that note, I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to separate and combine the various concerns as the project grows and more people contribute to it. The problem we’re facing is that although JavaScript (or Flash with ActionScript) is normally written with the template, hence part of the View and decoupled from the Controller and Model, we find that it actually encompasses the entire MVC pattern... Swap an image with an onmouseover event - that’s Behaviour. Render a datagrid - we’re manipulating the View. Send the result of reordering a list via AJAX - now we’re in Control. Check a form field to see if an email address is in a valid format - we’re consulting the Model. Is it wise to let the database people write up the validation Model with jQuery? Can the php programmers write the necessary Control structures in JavaScript? Can the web designers really write a functional AJAX form for their View? Should there be a JavaScript overlord for every project? If the MVC pattern could be applied to the people instead of the code, we would end up with this: Model - the database boffins - “SELECT * FROM mind WHERE interested IS NULL” Control - pesky programmers - “class Something extends NothingAbstractClass{…}” View - traditionally the domain of the graphic/web designer - “” …and a new layer: Behaviour - interaction and feedback designer - “CSS3 is the new black…” So, we’re refactoring and I’d like to stick to best practice design, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so would anyone have any hints or tips as to what pattern I should be looking at or any code samples from someone who’s already done the dirty work? As the programmer guy, how can I rewrite the app for backend and front end whilst keeping the two separate? And before you ask, yes I’ve looked at Zend, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, etc., and no, they don’t seem to cross the boundary between server logic and client logic!
