  • Address book software that knows people share addresses

    I'm a bit frustrated with Outlook and Google contacts, as neither understand that people share addresses, or that one address can represent several people. So you either have crappy custom fields like "Bill's mobile", "Jane's mobile", or you have a Bill and a Jane contact, and you have to keep the address updated between the two. Are the any decent, and simple, address book applications out there which have this kind of intelligence? Note: this is for home use, I don't need to do professional 'contact management'.

  • Is Gmail Being Blocked by my ISP?

    EDIT: I thought I pinpointed the problem. Just now I tried to go to the firefox addons page which uses https and gmail also uses https. So I thought I am unable to load https pages on this computer. So I went to a bank site which uses https but that loads just fine. Sigh.... I asked this over at superuser but they weren't able to help, so I was hoping the sysadmins here will be able to advise as to what's wrong. Although the issue here is with a PC and not a server it still deals with networking so I hope it's not too irrelevant. The Issue: I have a desktop on which I cannot access Gmail and also youtube sign in (I believe since youtube is owned by google they both use the same sign in system). On other computers that uses the same connection via a wireless router I can access both gmail and youtube sign in just fine. On this computer which doesn't have a wireless card and so I have to connect via Ethernet cable (connected to a USB converter since the Ethernet port doesn't work anymore) I can access all sites and services including things like aol and hotmail. But only when it comes to gmail, do I get complete and utter throttling. I even turned off my AV ad Firewall momentarily and no luck. The gmail log in page starts to load and by mid point it just stays there loading and loading and loading... never ends. I tried everything, I reset the modem and router multiple times. I reinstalled my operating system from a vista to a windows 7 hoping that a complete reinstall would solve the issue, but no luck. And yes, I am going to call my ISP but not to solve this issue, but to cancel them. I want to upgrade to cable from DSL anyway. I didn't mention my ISP because I'm not sure if that is within the rules (if it's okay some one let me know and I will). P.S. All this happened one day, before that gmail was perfectly accessible in this computer. I can't remember anything special happening on that day prior to this. The only thing I can think of is, my ISP or Google itself is blocking this computer based on it's mac address, but I don't know if that's even done. Additional info: PC: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit Connection Type: DSL Connecting Medium: Ethernet cable via USB converter I should mention I can access gmail and youtube just fine through a IP proxy service.

    Trying to use the 7-zip self extracting archive GUI and it fails. When I try to create a "Self Extracting Installer" option, at the end of the install it runs my batch file and it appears to be extracting all the files just before it does that, but after extraction, the files are nowhere to be found (except within the .7z archive).   • How to interpret Rackspace server diagnostics?

    We've been having some trouble lately with our site timing out during times of high traffic. We're working on a number of things to resolve it. During this process I came across our server diagnostics page on Rackspace, and it has the following line: The host server's load is: 0.08 0.08 0.03 1/204 2437 I couldn't find an explanation on their site or Google. Can anyone explain what these numbers mean? For I am a lowly programmer. Much appreciated, -Ben

  • Media Center keeps re-recording movies (not listed in "Series")

    When I record a movie in Windows Media Center, it records it again every time it shows up in the Guide listings again - days, weeks, or months later. The movies are not listed as a Series (Recorded TV - Schedules - Series). I found many matches for this problem on Google, and no solutions. Windows XP SP3 w/all current updates; MCE 2005 w/all current updates.

    Google docs doesn't have a database app (yet) but can anyone point me to a good, free, online substitute? It'll be for simple things like a database of my DVD collection and I'd want to be able to import/export using standard file formats and add/edit fields of existing databses. By the way, I'm not interested in using a spreadsheet as a database.

  • Can I run a site search like Lucene on a single 2 gig server that's also a web & mysql server

    My site's pages have exceeded the limit of pages for Google Custom Search so many of the results are not found in our site search. I've been reading about Lucene, Nutch, Solr, etc and I'm wondering if I'd have the requirements for running those on a single server that also runs the site (on nginx) and our mysql server. We hae 2 gigs of RAM. I'd appreciate any suggestions for migrating to a new site search.

  • E-mail sent with postfix are marked as spam.

    I am using gmail as my email provider, and I only have gmail servers for my mx records. I don't like the 500 message per day cap. To address this issue I would like to run postfix on my Linux machine to only send email, incoming port 25 blocked by my firewall. I can send email, however google marks all messages sent with postfix as SPAM. How do I make sure that people know email sent with postfix is valid?

I'm looking to incrementally backup new and updated files in two directories on my Plesk run Centos 5.2 server: /backups and /var/www/vhosts (preferable only httdocs within each vhost) Has anyone got some great feedback from using the various solutions - seems to be various Java, Perl and Ruby based solutions out there.   • How to split a multipage TIFF file on Windows?

    I thought Adobe Photoshop could do everything, but apparently it cannot read multipage TIFF files. I have a TIFF file with four pages, and I need to edit one of the pages. Windows Picture Viewer can print all four pages, but cannot split them. Anyone know how I can split the original TIFF into four separate images suitable for editing? The Google search for "free tiff splitter windows" returns lots of suspicious looking downloads.

  • How do I permanently delete e-mail messages in the sendmail queue and keep them from coming back?

    I have a pretty annoying problem here. I have been testing an application and have created some test e-mails to bogus e-mail addresses (not to mention that my server isn't really set up to send e-mail anyway). Of course, sendmail is not able to send these messages and they have been getting stuck in the sendmail queue. I want to manually delete the messages that have been building up in the queue instead of waiting the 5 days that sendmail usually takes to stop retrying. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and /var/spool/mqueue/ is the directory in which every how-to I have read says the e-mails that are queued up are kept. When I delete the files in this directory, sendmail stops trying to process the e-mails until what appears to be a cron script runs and re-populates this directory with the messages I don't want sent.   • sbs 2001 essentials rdp cert install package

    Im using Microsoft SBS 2011 esentials to allow some of my users to remote into there work machines when they try they get and error that says that the rd gateway can not be trusted I looked up the error on google and confirmed that i need to install the ssl cert on the local machine but the instructions given are for sbs 2011 standard (website here ) but the path given is not in sbs essentials so where can i find the " Install Certificate Package.zip " file in essentials?

  • Can I uninstall Silverlight? Does any major site still require it? [on hold]

    The last major site using Silverlight was Netflix but there's been an effort to implement Premium Video Extensions for HTML5 on the Mac for Safari. According to Netflix support is coming with OS X Yosemite. (See blog link below) For other platforms it appears Google Chrome also has support for Premium Video Extensions for HTML5 and Netflix will use it. For those from the fairer OS: how much memory does the operating system take up? how much memory does Google Chrome, with 10-15 tabs open, probably a Youtube, Gmail, Docs among them, usually take up? Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint? I plan on purchasing the 1.86Ghz 13" Macbook Air.
