• How can I prevent OpenVPN Client from blocking inbound connections while a tunnel is connected?

  We have this machine that we RDP into for using OpenVPN. When a tunnel is connected, it is not possible to RDP into the machine. Should we get disconnected, this is a problem (machine is headless). How can I stop OpenVPN from blocking inbound RDP? I do not have access to the server configuration. If there's anything interesting on the client to check you'll have to tell me how to get at it. I eliminated the possibility of routing issue before asking the question. Only inbound connections cannot be opened. Outbound connections to LAN can be opened just fine. EDIT: Don't bother answering. The problem disappeared without any known changes being made.

• Page loading hangs and never times out (Apache)

  I have set up Apache2 on a guest Ubuntu 10.04 OS (virtualbox). I have created a "big" HTML file (4MB) with only plain text and when I access a page through my local IP address such as http://192.168.0.100 it successfully loads the entire page. However, when I try to access it through my public IP address the browser loads part of the page and then hangs forever on "loading". I can load a simple webpage though. I'm not sure whether it's an issue with my Apache configuration, Virtualbox, Router or Modem. Any clues? Tried enabling Debug and mod_status but didn't find any useful information.

• Windows 8.1 will not boot after upgrading from Windows 8 on my PC

  I have not found a fix. After running the Windows 8.1 Update from the store my computer will not boot unless In insert my recovery USB drive and try to repair. (The repair fails.) However after I power of the PC and remove the USB drive. The PC will boot correctly once. I would leave the PC on but it shuts it self off at night. (And yes I have checked my power profile, it is set to never.) The only thing I have found online is a possibly corrupt video driver. I uninstalled the video driver reboot and it did not fix the issue. Anybody have any suggestions? The PC is a HP EliteBook 8730w laptop. I had no issues with Windows 8 or the Windows 8.1 preview.

• Group Policy dealing with IE zone assignment not sticking!

  I have a group policy (which ONLY deals with the zone assignment) -that is continually switching on and off with reboots. I thought it was a conflicting group policy but when I run group policy modeling report it doesn't show any descrepancies that I can see. I thought it may be an issue with one domain controller wasn't replicating my policy change to the other one, but this isn't the case. I checked both domain controllers and they show the same information. The assignment is on a user basis and is in: user configuration > administrative templates > windows components > internet explorer > internet control panel > security and is site to zone assignment.

• Any Windows based OpenID servers out there? [closed]

  I've been looking to setup an OpenID server for a special project, but haven't found any workable OpenID server software packages. Originally was looking for a *nix solution, and found several, but they all had some kind of issue. So far I've tried JOIDS, community-id, and a couple others I unfortunately can't remember the names of. I've also come to the conclusion that even if I had managed to get one of those going that the management/upgrade cycles would have placed undue burden on the company (only a couple part time sysadmins with *nix knowledge, the day to day people are primarily Windows). So, I'm hoping that there's a Windows one out that will be functional that someone knows about and will be easy for a minimal support environment...

• How do 2D physics engines solve the problem of resolving collisions along tiled walls/floors in non-grid-based worlds?

  I've been working on implementing my SAT algorithm which has been coming along well, but I've found that I'm at a wall when it comes to its actual use. There are plenty of questions regarding this issue on this site, but most of them either have no clear, good answer or have a solution based on checking grid positions. To restate the problem that I and many others are having, if you have a tiled surface, like a wall or a floor, consisting of several smaller component rectangles, and you traverse along them with another rectangle with force being applied into that structure, there are cases where the object gets caught on a false collision on an edge that faces the inside of the shape. I have spent a lot of time thinking about how I could possibly solve this without having to resort to a grid-based system, and I realized that physics engines do this properly. What I want to know is how they do this. What do physics engines do beyond basic SAT that allows this kind of proper collision resolution in complex environments? I've been looking through the source code to Box2D trying to find out how they do it but it's not quite as easy as looking at a Collision() method. I think I'm not good enough at physics to know what they're doing mathematically and not good enough at programming to know what they're doing programmatically. This is what I aim to fix.

• Unreliable resume from suspend?

  My desktop PC (home-built) resumes from suspend somewhat unreliably. I'd say that it resumes successfully about 85-90% of the time and hangs with a blank screen 5-10% of the time. As far as I can tell, the success or failure of the resume is completely random. I doubt it's a software problem because I triple boot Windows 7, Windows XP and Ubuntu and it's similar under all 3 operating systems. If it matters, my system is overclocked, though other than the resume-from-suspend issue, it's definitely rock stable. What are some of the obvious suspects that would cause random, sporadic failures to resume from suspend?

• Receiving a notification on a Cluster Group Failover

  Hi all, I have several Windows Cluster set up and I have the need of keeping track of failovers. I'd need to receive a notification of sort whenever a group fails over. I've seen some examples around, but I can't rely on the approach of just sending a message whenever the resources are stopped/restarted as it would generate too many false alarms. In few words, I need to be notified if and only if the group really fails over. I was thinking that probably the best way is monitoring the System Event Log, but, if possible, I'd prefer not having to write a script/program from scratch for this issue. Is there any script/product that already does it? Thanks.

• 16-bit PNGs in Slick2D

  I'm working on a project and I'm using some 3rd party sprites just to get it off the ground; recently I've come into a hitch. Slick2D doesn't seem to want to load my images. That is, it will warn me that images are the wrong bit-depth. All the images are in 16-bit PNG form (PNG is required for transparency). Is there any way I can disable the warning (being the bad guy programmer (the console print for each individual load REALLY SLOWS DOWN the image)) or is there another solution? I was thinking about converting all images (using imagemagick) to .gif (with an alpha channel). Would there be any loss in quality between formats? EDIT: I tried using imagemagick but some of the sprites use pure black so I can't do that without wrecking the image. EDIT2: using "identify" on any of the images show them as being 8-bit.. but Slick2D won't load them. What the hell? D: EDIT3: Issue solved (ish). If you are googling this then just disable the java png loader from slick by sticking this somewhere in your code (like the main method): System.setProperty("org.newdawn.slick.pngloader", "false");

• Grub can not boot after resizing windows XP (NTFS) partition. What is to be done? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to Repair Grub while dual booting ( win7 / ubuntu 11.10) I had installed Lubuntu on a PC with Windows XP and used dual boot for some time with no problems. Since I had almost abandoned Windows (kept it for printing...) I decided to resize its ntfs partition and add the free space to my Ubuntu space. Tried that with a gparted stick and a live cd but would not work due to an issue related to the ntfs partition: gparted signaled with a red exclamation point that there was a problem with that partition. I read that a checkdisk might solve it but in the end used EaseUS in Windows to shrink (resize) the ntfs partition and create a new one (ext3) from the space left. All seemed ok with that procedure: but resizing the partition and moving the data might have affected the grub file: or whatever the following message means, which I get when trying to start my pc: error: file not found grub rescue> Booting from a live cd I see, beside the shrinked windows partition and my old linux one, the newly created partition, containing a directory called lost+found that I cannot open. Can I fix the grub file and recover both my XP and Lubuntu installations?

• Can't connect to server from certain machines

  On a small college campus we have a VLAN setup for the computer labs. These machines get assigned IP addresses in the 192.168.7.xxx range. In the server room, all of the server are on the default VLAN and assigned an IP address in the 10.1.1.xxx range. For the most part this works, but the lab machines are unable to connect to one of the servers. They can't even ping it. They can talk to other servers on the same switch as this server just fine. At first I thought it might be a vlan issue, but I changed the server port vlan to match other known-working ports with no effect. Any ideas?

• Why do people tell me not to use VLANs for security?

  Hi Everyone, As per title, why do people tell me not to use VLANs for security purposes? I have a network, where a have a couple of VLANS. There is a firewall between the 2 VLANs. I am using HP Procurve switches and have made sure that switch-to-switch links accept tagged frames only and that host ports don't accept tagged frames (They are not "VLAN Aware"). I've also made sure that the native VLAN (PVID) of the trunk links are not the same as either of the 2 host VLANs. I've also enabled "Ingress Filtering". Furthermore, I've made sure that host ports are only members of a single VLAN, which is the same as the PVID of the respective port. The only ports which are members of multiple VLANs are the trunk ports. Can someone please explain to me why the above isn't secure? I believe I've addressed the double tagging issue.. Thanks

• Ubuntu: On a network with many clients there are two machines that can't access the web via a browser at the same time

  Ok I'm pulling my hair out over this one. We have a wireless network with many clients all working well except two Ubuntu clients running 10.10 that can't access the internet via a browser at the same time. They can both still ping, use Skype etc but can't browse. As soon as the one that can browse exits the network browsing returns for the other and vice versa. As ping and Skype was working I assumed some kind of DNS problem but moving over to OpenDNS didn't solve it, nor did restarting networking or using wired rather than wireless. We also switched out the router, and it still persisted so I'm sure this isn't a network issue. The two clients are both laptops and work fine together on a wireless network at another office (which we don't control). I'm thinking something must be cached from the other network they both use that's causing this but have no idea what. Does anyone have any ideas? I just don't know where to go from here.

  I backup SQL Server database and it fails BACKUP DATABASE dd TO DISK = '\backupServer\backups\dd.bak' WITH COMPRESSION, CHECKSUM, NOFORMAT, INIT , BlockSize = 65536 , BufferCount = 2200 , MaxTransferSize = 4194304 The backup size is 3TB and I have 6TB free space on bacup server. I am using backup parameters per SQLCAT whitepaper. Everything works ok when I backup to local HDD and it always fails when I backup to network share. After about 6 hours. Can't find why. Thank you. Yes. The backup over the network is fastest and saves me 3Tb of local disk space :) Thanks for pointing to the memory issue. I left 4Gb to OS and it worked!

• Firefox 11 Bookmarks Toolbar too Tall

  After updating to Firefox 11, my Bookmarks Toolbar is unpleasantly tall. This link implies that it's due to the presence of separators in my toolbar. I tried adding the suggested CSS in post 5 to my userChrome.css file, but this did nothing. I have also tried #PersonalToolbar {max-height:10px !important;} But this simply truncates the bottom of the toolbar. Does anyone know how to change the size of the bookmarks toolbar to match Firefox 10? More info: Here is a screenshot of my Bookmarks Toolbar. I'm using OSX 10.6.8 with the default theme. I have "View Toolbars Customize Use small icons" enabled. I'm also using the LiveClick 0.4.2.0 extension, but disabling it does not fix the issue.

• LDAP replication breaking referrals

  We have an issue that we believe is caused by ldap replication changing the port of the referal from 686 (secure) to 389 (unsecure). If we setup a new referral everything works, but then as soon as we change someone's password it changes on the master, and then the master replicates and the referral breaks. Any further attempts to modify someone's account give the error "PAM: Cannot connect to LDAP". We used snoop and monitored the firewall to see what was going on. The first password attempt (the one that works) goes over port 686 (as it is supposed to) but every subsequent attempt attempts to use port 389, and therefore fails. We only have 1 referral configured on the client, port 686

  Hi i am trying to connect 2 ubuntu computers as a LAN. In my current setup I have: One machine running ubuntu 11.10 with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller While the other machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Atheros Communications Inc AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet The two machines are connected via a switch (Edimax ES-3205P). Unfortunately I still cannot connect the two machines together. Can somebody please show me what to do and how to go about solving this issue?

• Windows 8 Program Sharing?

  How do I, as the administrator, share the Skype program with a user on the same PC? I tried to download Skype to the user from the windows store that said it was blocked and I must contact the administrator. The Skype icon appears on the user desktop but with an X in the corner with no way to allow it to work as the administrator. In the administrator desktop the Skype icon appears without the x and it does work. I have tried to research this issue and so far all I have been able to find and do is the enable $admin share at this link http://www.intelliadmin.com/index.php/2012/10/windows-8-enable-the-admin-share/ Now that I have done this how do I use it to share the Skype program? • Is there a PROPRIETARY driver (NVIDIA or ATI) that actually works with 12.10?

  NOTE: I see many similar topics on this, but I've tried all their suggestions, and nothing has worked. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE SEEMS TO BE: I always get a black screen with a blinking cursor, while others seem to get through the boot-up and see distorted graphics or just their wallpaper. ISSUE: I do a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10. Boots fine with the “nouveau” graphics driver – graphics (even just menus) are very slow, choppy, and distorted. The three other driver options in Ubuntu (official NVIDIA drivers), all result in a variation of the black screen on boot up. There will be NO access to a command line/GUI in anyway what-so-ever (tried every option recommended out there, but the system is unusable at this stage). I can only reinstall, and try different drivers…and I only ever get one shot at it. QUESTIONS: -Does anyone know of a PROPRIETARY driver that will actually work on 12.10 with a NVIDIA or ATI card? -Should I just buy a newer graphics card to put in as a replacement? MORE INFO: This is my second computer, and I’m just trying to get a working install of Ubuntu on it. I don’t want to put much money into it, as I have seen Ubuntu run great on much older/less capable machines. I’ve got a decent'ish Core2Duo Intel processor (2.13Ghz), 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, 32-bit architecture, and there is no other O/S installed. It appears as if the graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce 7350 LE) is holding me back. TRIED SO FAR: -all drivers available in Ubuntu *all fail -manual install of some different NVIDIA drivers *all fail -also tried installing the generic kernel, Nvidia driver doesn't work in 12.10 *no difference -tried installing 12.04 *same results -every method suggested to at least get a command line after switching to a NVIDIA driver *all fail -UPDATE- Re-tried everything above with a new NVIDIA Geforce 210...same results for everything. -UPDATE #2- Re-tried everything above with a new AMD Radeon HD 6450...installed the proprietary driver from Ubuntu's "Software Sources" menu...EVERYTHING NOW WORKS.   At this moment I have a ATI HD 5870 iCooler 5 and I game a lot. I want to replace the card for another, I don't have room in my case to add another 5870. I mainly play games like Battlefield 3, but I can't play this game on Ultra high, for me is this pretty important. So here are my questions: Price is not an issue because computers are a big hobby to me and hobbies cost money :-) Can anyone recommend me a better card, ATI or Nvidia does not mather to me.   I just received an email from the Development team explaining the detailed dates when what version of OBIEE will be in what stage of Support. So again for all readers who have not had the chance to look at the  lifetime Support policy from Oracle, I'll  try to explain this in easy words: Any major release is in "error correction support" by Development for another 12 months following the availability of a new major release. Examples: 11.1.1.5.0 was released in May 2011.  => So 11.1.1.3.0 (the version before that) went out of patching support ( or "error correction support" ) 12 months after that, i.e. June 2012. Note here: It went out of error correction support, which means Development will not fix bugs, or issue patches after that. The product can still be supported by Technical Support ( as "best effort support" ).So - Questions will still be answered, but there will not be fixes to bugs or glitches.11.1.1.6.0 was released in February 2012.  => Therefore 11.1.1.5.0 will be out of patching support / error correction support starting March 2013. I hope this clears up some of the questions/concerns that you might have had. Oh, and of course to mention the latest and recommended version to use: 11.1.1.6.0 + 11.1.1.6.5 bundle patch is "just what the doctor ordered".

• how to skip grub dual boot option menu entirely (without picking an OS to boot)

  I'd like to skip the entire Grub 2 interface, where I have to decide booting Linux or Windows im running linux ubuntu lastest version (14.04.1 LTS) and windows 8.1 both 64 bit versions. I've installed easyBCD software, which I want to use as (my only) boot manager. Issue: whenever I run my computer, I get grub interface to pick Linux or Windows, after that I get easyBCD interface where I have to pick linux or windows again. If both choices are the same, proper system boots, else I get thrown back to beggining (grub UI). I'd like to somehow delete / skip grub from appearing. TLDR title :) thank you for helping!

• PHPMyAdmin running very slow over internet but fine locally

  I connect to PHPMyAdmin remotely on a Centos server using my local PC via Firefox. Usually it's fine but today it's really slow (2 minutes to load a page), sometimes timing out. Other connections to the server are fine. The SSH command line is as fast as ever as is the GNOME dekstop over SSH. In fact on the GNOME desktop I can run PHPMyAdmin locally from its browser and it's as quick as ever (which is a solution to the problem of course). I've checked the various log files and seen nothing unusual, I've logged into the MySQL command line and the database is running fine without any slowing what so ever. So it just seems to be slow when I access PHPMyAdmin on the server from the browser on my remote PC (I've tried IE and Firefox, both are slow). Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas what the issue could be. Connecting via CLI through tunnel works OK - problem is in phpMyAdmin for sure. Cheers

  I am a shop owner at zazzle.com. About six weeks ago, when my computer was running on Windows XP/IE7, my sites, as well as zazzle's homepages went out on me. I can only see part of each page. Since that time, I have a new computer running Windows 7/IE8, thinking that would solve the issue. It did not. Zazzle's emails told me to download Firefox and/or download Internet Explorer 7. I tried Firefox and was getting a different problem at the zazzle site. Now I was getting only the 'view source' pages on zazzle's homepages and my own shop sites as well. Question: Can I download IE 7 onto my IE 8 computer? Can this be done without loading that compilation of internet explorer 1 through 8? What do you think is the best solution to this problem?

• Clearing Windows file share "memory"

  I'm currently upgrading a Samba file server (from 3.0.23d to 3.4.3). I have a problem on the Windows client side: if the client was accessing a UNC path or mapped drive from the Samba server before the upgrade, then after the upgrade those paths or drives are not accessible. However, I can consistently resolve the client side problem for good by rebooting the client and then re-mapping all of the mapped drives. The problem appears to be related to the client's "memory" of the pre-upgrade Samba server, which the reboot and re-map clears. I have the same issue and same fix on Windows XP SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2. This question is specifically: is it possible to reproduce the benefits of the Windows reboot without actually rebooting the client? I have tried restarting various Windows services, disabling and enabling the network, logging out and back in again, but nothing except a reboot appears to do the trick.
