    Hi there, I have a WPF app that has a ViewBox to display the items in my collection, diplaying a 2-column grid for my results. What I'd like to do is, depending on the number of items in my collection, change the number of columns. E.g if there are < 10 items in the list, then show them in just 1 column; If there are 10 items in my list, then show them in 2 columns; If there are 20 items in my list, then show 3 columns.     I use a DATE's master table for looking up dates and other values in order to control several events, intervals and calculations within my app. It has rows for every single day begining from 01/01/1990 to 12/31/2041. One example of how I use this lookup table is: A customer pawned an item on: JAN-31-2010 Customer returns on MAY-03-2010 to make an interest pymt to avoid forfeiting the item. If he pays 1 months interest, the employee enters a "1" and the app looks-up the pawn date (JAN-31-2010) in date master table and puts FEB-28-2010 in the applicable interest pymt date. FEB-28 is returned because FEB-31's dont exist! If 2010 were a leap-year, it would've returned FEB-29. If customer pays 2 months, MAR-31-2010 is returned. 3 months, APR-30... If customer pays more than 3 months or another period not covered by the date lookup table, employee manually enters the applicable date.   • Windows-Mobile Directshow: Specifying bitrate/quality of a WMV video capture

    Hi- I'm stumped on this, and I'm really hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'm currently capturing video in Windows Mobile and encoding it using the WMV 9 DMO (CLSID_CWMV9EncMediaObject). That all works well enough, but the output video's bitrate is too high, resulting in a video file that's much too large for my needs. Ultimately, my goal is to mimic the video settings that Microsoft's Camera Capture Dialog outputs in the "messaging" quality mode (64kbps) from my C++ code. Currently, my code's outputting a WMV file with a bitrate of 352kbps. The only example I could find of specifying the capture bitrate with a WMV9 DMO was this. The idea in that code was basically to use a propertybag to write a bitrate to a property of the DMO. Update: In windows mobile, the closest codec property I can find that seems to equate to the bitrate is "g_wszWMVCVBRQuality". Microsoft's documentation of this property is extremely confusing to me: It basically seems to say that a higher number equates to a higher quality, but it gives absolutely no explanation of the specifics for each number. When I attempt to set this property to value like "1" via a propertybag for the WMV9 DMO, I run into a -2147467259 (unknown) error. To summarize: What is the basic strategy to specify the bitrate/quality of a video being captured via directshow (wmv9) on a windows mobile platform? I've heard (or wondered about) the following methods: Use the propertybag to change the encoder DMO's property that corresponds to bitrate/quality (currently failing) Create your own custom transcoder/encoder to specify it. This seems unnecessary since the WMV encoder works well enough- it's just at too high a bitrate. The VIDEOINFOHEADER has a bitrate property, but I suspect that specifying new settings here will do nothing to alter the actual encoding process since I wouldn't think file attributes would come into play until after the encoding. Any suggestions? PS: I would post specific source code, but at this point it may confuse more than it helps since I'm floundering so much on how to do this. At this point, I'm just trying to validate the general strategy. THANKS!

  • C# or C++ game: many 16 color images loaded into RAM. Efficient solution?

    I am in the planning stages of creating a fighting game and am unsure how to handle one issue relating to memory. Background info: - Still debating whether to use C# (XNA) or C++. We do not want to commit to either until we have explored how to solve this problem in both languages. - Using a max of 256MB RAM would be great if possible. - Two characters will be present at a time, and these characters can only change between battles. There is time to load/free memory between battles, but the game needs to run at a constant 60 drawn frames per second during combat. Each frame is 16.67ms - The total number of images per character is in the low hundreds. Each image is roughly 200x400 pixels. Only one image from each character will be displayed at any given moment. Uncompressed, each image takes roughly 300kb from my calculations; upwards of 100MB for a whole character. This is pushing too close to the 256MB limit given that memory will be needed for some other resources as well. Since each image can be made with a total of 16 colors. Theoretically I should be able to use 1/8th the space if I can take advantage of this. I've looked around but haven't found any word of native support for paletted images. (Storing each pixel using fewer bits that each map to a 32-bit RGBa color) I was considering making my own file format with 4 bits per pixel (and some extra palette info), loading all the images of this new format into RAM before battle, and then when drawing any specific image, decompress only that image into a raw image so it can be rendered properly. I don't know if it's realistic to perform so many assignment operations (appx 200x400 for each character = 160k) each frame. It sounds very hacky to me. Does anyone have advice on whether my solution sounds reasonable, and if there is perhaps a better one available? Thanks so much! (I also attempted to use an image with only 1 channel, then use a shader to perform a series of if statements to translate various values into other colors. Unfortunately, there were too many lines of code for the shader. It is also rather hacky and does not scale well.)

  • Using Traveling Salesman Solver to Decide Hamiltonian Path

    This is for a project where I'm asked to implement a heuristic for the traveling salesman optimization problem and also the Hamiltonian path or cycle decision problem. I don't need help with the implementation itself, but have a question on the direction I'm going in. I already have a TSP heuristic based on a genetic algorithm: it assumes a complete graph, starts with a set of random solutions as a population, and works to improve the population for a number of generations. Can I also use it to solve the Hamiltonian path or cycle problems? Instead of optimizing to get the shortest path, I just want to check if there is a path. Now any complete graph will have a Hamiltonian path in it, so the TSP heuristic would have to be extended to any graph. This could be done by setting the edges to some infinity value if there is no path between two cities, and returning the first path that is a valid Hamiltonian path. Is that the right way to approach it? Or should I use a different heuristic for Hamiltonian path? My main concern is whether it's a viable approach since I can be somewhat sure that TSP optimization works (because you start with solutions and improve them) but not if a Hamiltonian path decider would find any path in a fixed number of generations. I assume the best approach would be to test it myself, but I'm constrained by time and thought I'd ask before going down this route... (I could find a different heuristic for Hamiltonian path instead)

  • Is it a good practice to suppress warnings?

    Sometimes while writing Java in Eclipse, I write code that generates warnings. A common one is this, which I get when extending the Exception class: public class NumberDivideException extends Exception { public NumberDivideException() { super("Illegal complex number operation!"); } public NumberDivideException(String s) { super(s); } } // end NumberDivideException The warning: The serializable class NumberDivideException does not declare a static final serialVersionUID field of type long. I know this warning is caused by my failure to... well, it says right above. I could solve it by including the serialVersionUID, but this is a one hour tiny assignment for school; I don't plan on serializing it anytime soon... The other option, of course, is to let Eclipse add @SuppressWarnings("serial"). But every time my mouse hovers over the Suppress option, I feel a little guilty. For programming in general, is it a good habit to suppress warnings? (Also, as a side question, is adding a "generated" serialVersionUID like serialVersionUID = -1049317663306637382L; the proper way to add a serialVersionUID, or do I have to determine the number some other way?)

  • C# - update variable based upon results from backgroundworker

    I've got a C# program that talks to an instrument (spectrum analyzer) over a network. I need to be able to change a large number of parameters in the instrument and read them back into my program. I want to use backgroundworker to do the actual talking to the instrument so that UI performance doesn't suffer. The way this works is - 1) send command to the instrument with new parameter value, 2) read parameter back from the instrument so I can see what actually happened (for example, I try to set the center frequency above the max that the instrument will handle and it tells me what it will actually handle), and 3) update a program variable with the actual value received from the instrument. Because there are quite a few parameters to be updated I'd like to use a generic routine. The part I can't seem to get my brain around is updating the variable in my code with what comes back from the instrument via backgroundworker. If I used a separate RunWorkerCompleted event for each parameter I could hardwire the update directly to the variable. I'd like to come up with a way of using a single routine that's capable of updating any of the variables. All I can come up with is passing a reference number (different for each parameter) and using a switch statement in the RunWorkerCompleted handler to direct the result. There has to be a better way.     I'm writing an application and I'm using MySQL as DBMS, we are downloading property offers and there were some performance issues. The old architecture looked like this: A property is updated. If the number of affected rows is not 1, then the update is not considered successful, elseway the update query solves our problem. If the update was not successful, and the number of affected rows is more than 1, we have duplicates and we delete all of them. After we deleted duplicates if needed if the update was not successful, an insert happens. This architecture was working well, but there were some speed issues, because properties are deleted if they were not updated for 15 days. Theoretically the main problem is deleting properties, because some properties are alive for months and the indexes are very far from each other (we are talking about 500, 000+ properties). Our host told me to use replace into instead of deleting properties and all deprecated properties should be considered as DEAD. I've done this, but problems started to occur because of syntax error and I couldn't find anywhere an example of replace into with a where clause (I'd like to replace a DEAD property with the new property instead of deleting the old property and insert a new to assure optimization). My query looked like this: replace into table_name(column1, ..., columnn) values(value1, ..., valuen) where ID = idValue Of course, I've calculated idValue and handled everything but I had a syntax error. I would like to know if I'm wrong and there is a where clause for replace into. I've found an alternative solution, which is even better than replace into (using simply an update query) because deletes are happening behind the curtains if I use replace into, but I would like to know if I'm wrong when I say that replace into doesn't have a where clause.     Hello, I've been trying to make a for loop that will iterate based off of the length of a network packet. In the API there exists a variable (size_t) by event.packet-dataLength. I want to iterate from 0 to event.packet-dataLength - 7 increasing i by 10 each time it iterates but I am having a world of trouble. I looked for solutions but have been unable to find anything useful. I tried converting the size_t to an unsigned int and doing the arithmetic with that but unfortunately it didn't work. Basically all I want is this: for (int i = 0; i < event.packet->dataLength - 7; i+=10) { } Though every time I do something like this or attempt at my conversions the i < # part is a huge number. They gave a printf statement in a tutorial for the API which used "%u" to print the actual number however when I convert it to an unsigned int it is still incorrect.     What should be the regex for matching date of any format like 26FEB2009 30 Jul 2009 27 Mar 2008 29/05/2008 27 Aug 2009 What should be the regular expression for that ? Edit I have regex that matches with 26-Feb-2009 and 26 FEB 2009 with but not with 26FEB2009. So if any one know then please update it.
