• Problem with creation of scheduled task from IIS6 on SR2003

  Hi, I have also posted this question on stackoverflow, but will also try here, since it might be more system-related I am writing a webapplication using .NET. The webapp creates scheduled tasks using the System.Diagnostics.Process class, calling SCHTASKS.EXE with parameters. I have changed the identity on the app pool, to a specific domain user. The domain-user is local administrator on all the four webservers. From webserver01 I am creating tasks on webserver01 to webserver04. It works perfect for 3-5 days, but then it breaks. It gives me the following errormessage in a messagebox: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." If I have the system in the broken state, and I change the identity of the app pool to Domain administrator, it works. As I change it back to my domain-user, it breaks again. If I reboot the server, it works again for the same amount of days, but will break again. It seems like a permission-related problem. I just don't understand why it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I hope someone outthere has seen this problem! Looking forward to hear from you! Kind regards, Morten, Denmark

• Localhost problems on Mac OS X 10.7

  Sorry for the duplicate post ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9720871/localhost-problems-on-mac-os-x-10-7 ), but I got the advice that this is a better place to ask my question: I want to access a mysql server remotely over ssh. So I used port forwarding to access the remote 3306 port on my localhost as 8383. The ssh connection can established successfully. But when I want to telnet onto port 8383 on localhost I get the following error: ~: telnet 127.0.0.1 8383 Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused telnet: Unable to connect to remote host I tried the same on a friends Laptop (also Mac OS X 10.7) and it worked fine, so it is very unlikely that the ssh connection is the problem. I assume it has something to do with my local network configuration. I turned off IPv6, just in case. My /etc/hosts looks like this: 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost I would greatly appreciate any help. Please point me in the right direction if this is not the right place to ask this question.

• VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 with Intel SPL 5000 in Raid 0 no boot from DVD?

  I hope this is the correct StackExchange, since I am only using StackOverflow for Web development, but need some help with my server configuration. I would like to install VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 on my server here at home and run a view machines on it such as Windows Server 2008 and Red Hat. I used to have either OpenSuse or Windows Server 2008 installed but I would like to get into VMWare Hypervisor. My hardware configuration: - Intel S5000PSL with bios version S5000.86B.10.60.0091 build date 10/09/2008 as of read out of bios - E5420 @ 2.5GHz Intel Xeon CPU The Intel Virtualization Technology is enabled in the BIOS - DVD DH20A4P DVD Writer - 8GB ECC Ram I have configured a RAID 0 on my 2 WD 2TB SATA drives I have burned the Hypervisor 5 on an empty DVD and it is bootable, I tested it on my client PC. The main problem here is basically, that I cannot boot the DVD on my server. I have set the Boot Option to the DVD drive. I have booted from the BIOS straight in the DVD drive and it does not work. I do not see any error messages. The only thing I see are the PXE error messages when it tries booting from the network and other devices, obviously without any result. Does anybody know why I cannot boot the DVD? What could cause the problem? I have sucessfully installed Windows Server 2008 via original DVD about 1 year ago, so the DVD drive can read and does work. The DVD drive is available in the BIOS and I have checked all cables and none of them is loose in any way. I even see the light flashing but it does not want to boot from the DVD. I am looking forward to suggestions and things that I should check. Thank you very much

• No Outbound Internet on Windows Home Server

  Could someone provide some steps for me to check my internet connection on my Windows Home Server? It seems to have intermittent connectivity issues and I am unsure of how to diagnose the problem because it is a headless (no monitor, no keyboard) machine so the only way to get to the device is via remote desktop (which works fine). When connected to the machine, it doesn't pull up any microsoft.com sites and some other sites it does pull up (i.e. gmail.com) and some it doesn't (stackoverflow.com). To make matters more complicated, it has worked intermittently in the past for reasons unknown. Are there tools I can use to properly diagnose the reason for the connection failure? I can ping 127.0.0.1 just fine, I have internet working on my other router-connected machines, so I'm not sure why this one would fail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and up-voted :) ** edit - thanks for suggestions guys, I'm going to try these tonight and will update my post. ** edit #2 - I hoping this is a more permanant fix, but I have both changed my port on the router as well as restarted the router at the same time. • How can I set up a 404 error page when people access http://ftp.mydomain.com?

  I am a freelance videographer/developer, and part of my job involves transferring large files over FTP to production houses/television stations. While the majority of people in my industry understand the difference between FTP and HTTP, I've experienced several interactions in the past couple months of people who still open Internet Explorer and try to access http://ftp.mydomain.com, receive an error page served by HostGator, and tell me that they cannot access my FTP server. Instead of spending time delivering instructions via e-mail, I'd much prefer to serve up a custom error page in this instance that instructs them how to download and use an FTP client. I tried setting up a sub-domain in Cpanel hoping I could simply drop in an .htaccess file with the error page, but I got this error: ftp.mydomain.com domainadmin-domainexistsglobal I also tried creating a custom error page in PHP which reads the site URL and serves up the custom content only when http://ftp.mydomain.com is accessed. Unfortunately, the error page works for every subdomain except that one. I'm not entirely sure this is even technically possible, which is why I bring it to the good people of StackOverflow to help.   Is there ever a legitimate reason for the SMTP “MAIL FROM:” field to not match the “From:” field in the DATA section of a message, besides mailing lists? From http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1750194/smtp-why-does-email-needs-envelope-and-what-does-the-envelope-mean: “But, to continue your snail mail metaphor, most professional letters will contain the sender's and recipient's addresses printed on the letter itself. Those addresses are not necessary for the postman, but are instead a courtesy to the recipient. So it's sensible that email would work the same way.” The problem with this line of logic lies here: “courtesy to the recipient”. Including the “From:” address in an email via SMTP is not a courtesy; it is required if the recipient is to be able to send a reply. From: How to limit the From header to match MAIL FROM in postfix?: “But if you really want to ensure From: and MAIL FROM then you have to apply header_checks so that Return-Path: matches From:” What are the implications of doing this? Mailing lists would obviously be a problem. Are there any other legitimate uses of differing “MAIL FROM:” and “From:” header information?

• How can I manually install pecl_http on Ubuntu 9.10?

  This is essentially a repost of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4159369/ubuntu-9-04-pecl-extension-downloads-but-does-not-install. Hoping maybe someone can help me here. I've done this: sudo apt-get install php-pear sudo apt-get install php5-dev sudo apt-get install libcurl3-openssl-dev which installs fine. However, the next step: sudo pecl install pecl_http Doesn't install the extension, but merely downloads it. There are no error messages. So I have unpacked it and built it myself per http://php.net/manual/en/install.pecl.phpize.php Essentially: cd pecl_http phpize ./configure make make install I also make test'd to check all ok - and it failed one test: HttpRequest, which is kind of fundamental to this package. And indeed this doesn't work: $r = new HttpRequest('http://www.google.com'); $r->send; echo $r->getResponseCode(); No request is sent, the response code is zero, but no errors either. How can I get this damn thing installed? Is this a bug? Am I doing something wrong? Any alternatives, workarounds? Help appreciated. Thanks

• What is optimal hardware configuration for heavy load LAMP application

  I need to run Linux-Apache-PHP-MySQL application (Moodle e-learning platform) for a large number of concurrent users - I am aiming 5000 users. By concurrent I mean that 5000 people should be able to work with the application at the same time. "Work" means not only do database reads but writes as well. The application is not very typical, since it is doing a lot of inserts/updates on the database, so caching techniques are not helping to much. We are using InnoDB storage engine. In addition application is not written with performance in mind. For instance one Apache thread usually occupies about 30-50 MB of RAM. I would be greatful for information what hardware is needed to build scalable configuration that is able to handle this kind of load. We are using right now two HP DLG 380 with two 4 core processors which are able to handle much lower load (typically 300-500 concurrent users). Is it reasonable to invest in this kind of boxes and build cluster using them or is it better to go with some more high-end hardware? I am particularly curious how many and how powerful servers are needed (number of processors/cores, size of RAM) what network equipment should be used (what kind of switches, network cards) any other hardware, like particular disc storage solutions, etc, that are needed Another thing is how to put together everything, that is what is the most optimal architecture. Clustering with MySQL is rather hard (people are complaining about MySQL Cluster, even here on Stackoverflow).

• Backup, Migrate or Clone Failing CentOS 4 (LVM)

  Hello there, I've been running a BlueQuartz CentOS 4 system (Nuonce.net distro) for a few years now and although the hard drive (Deskstar) has always been a bit noisy, on a few recent occasions I've heard it having trouble spinning up. Basically, I want to clone this drive to a similar sized one (80 Gig). I've spent many hours reading upon dd, dd_rescue, rsync, clonezilla and LVM mirroring yet the sheer number of options and nightmarish accounts has left me frozen - unable to make an informed decision as to how to start. I've made a few attempts. dd failed after about 2 hours, as, although the drives appeared to be identical on the surface (ATA Seagate Barracudas, Thai not Chinese), the destination drive is slightly smaller. My most recent attempt involved using a Debian CD to format the new drive and then rsync-ing everything over and editing the new drive's grub and fstab to reflect the changes. No joy here either as I hadn't chosen LVM when partitioning the destination drive and it wouldn't boot. As you can probably tell, I'm out of my depth here and a panic-invoking mixture of caution and frustration has prompted me to sign up here. The server itself, although not strictly a production environment, has a very specific installation of Festival, LAME and ffMpeg and provides the back-end for a Text-to-Speech jQuery plugin that I've built over the last 2 years. I'm also planning to rebuild the whole TTS system on Debian as the existing CentOS system still has PHP4 etc. For now though, I'd really like to just shift everything over to a new drive. As this is my first post, please feel free to lay any house rules on me that I might've overlooked; I've been hovering around StackOverflow for a while now but have only just signed up. Many thanks.

• Problems sending email using .Net's SmtpClient

  I've been looking through questions on Stackoverflow and Serverfault but haven't found the same problem mentioned - though that may be because I just don't know enough about how email works to understand that some of the questions are really the same as mine ... here's my situation: I have a web application that uses .Net's SmtpClient to send email. The configuration of the SmtpClient uses a smtp server, username and password. The SmtpClient code executes on a server that has an ip address not in the domain the smtp server is in. In most cases the emails go without a problem - but not AOL (and maybe others - but that is one we know for sure right now). When I look at the headers in the message that was kicked back from AOL it has one less line than the successful messages hotmail gets: AOL Bad Message: Received: from WEBSVRNAME ([##.###.###.###]) by domainofsmtp.com with MailEnable ESMTP; Mon, 18 Jun 2012 09:48:24 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> ... Notice the hotmail message headers has an additional line. I'm confused as to why the Web server's name and ip address are even in the headers since I thought I was using the SmtpClient to go through the smtp server (hence the need for the username and password of a valid email box). I've read about SPFs, DKIM and SenderID's but at this point I'm not sure if I would need to do something with the web server (and its ip/domain) or the domain the smtp is coming from. Has anyone had to do anything similiar before? Am I using the smtp server as a relay? Any help on how to describe what I'm doing would also help.

• fax server farm architechture

  I'm not sure this is the right forum for this, but it's not Stackoverflow so... I'm trying to figure out an architecture to solve the following problem, maybe someone here can help: I have a T1 with 23 fax lines coming into the building. I have a computer (Macintosh XServe) running Hylafax. If I had one POTS line, I'd be done. However, I have no idea how to get the T1 into the Mac... Options I've considered: some sort of PCI T1-modem (Does that exist?) Splitting the T1 into 23 POTS lines and then connecting 23 analog modems to the mac, either via an external modem bank (Do they still make those?) or via some sort of external PCI bank, which will allow me to use more than 2 4-port modem cards. Either the T1 or the split POTS lines going into some intermediate device and then transfering the images over IP, or USB to the mac. Really, any other option I can come up with This has GOT to be a problem that someone has already solved, right?

• Huh? JDK not found? (on Windows 7 64-bit)

  I am setting up a development environment for the latest Android 2.3 on a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. I first installed the 64-bit JDK 6 (jdk-6u23-windows-x64.exe). Then, I installed 64-bit Eclipse Classic 3.6 (eclipse-SDK-3.6.1-win32-x86_64.zip). Then, I proceed to install the Android SDK Starter Package: installer_r08-windows.exe. But... upon start it says: "Java SE Development Kit (JDK) not found." Why? I just installed it. Is this a mismatch between 32-bit and 64-bit? How do I solve this? Update (1): I tried setting the %JAVA_HOME% environment variable, as well as setting the Installed JREs in Eclipse, as suggested below. None of these solved the problem. It appears that I am not the only experiencing the problem, as this thread suggests: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1919340/android-sdk-setup-under-windows-7-pro-64-bit I wonder whether there is a 64-bit version of the Android SDK. Update (2): I used the zip version instead (android-sdk_r08-windows.zip), ran android.bat, updated all SDK packages, and installed the ADT plugin (8.0.1), not before having to check: 'Contact all update sites during install to find required software'. We'll see how this goes... Update (3): It worked! (going to accept @bubu's answer shortly) -- but why doesn't the emulator include the HelloAndroid app when I run it (Ctrl+F11) from Eclipse?

• SQL server queries are really slow only on first run

  Somewhat strange problem... when I start my .NET app for the first time after rebooting my machine, the SQL Server queries are really slow... when I pause the debugger, I notice that it's hanging on getting the response from the query. This only happens when connecting to a remote SQL server (2008)... if I connect to one on my local machine, it's fine. Also, if I restart the app, it works fast, even off the remote SQL server, and subsequent runs are also fine. The only problem is when I connect to a remote SQL server for the first time after rebooting my machine. What's more, I have even noticed this same exact behavior with a 3rd party app (also .NET) that also connects to a remote SQL server. Another piece of info... this has only started hapenning since I upgraded my machine from XP to Win7 (64 bit). Also, other developers on my team who upgraded to Win7 are seeing the same behavior (both with the app we're developing and the 3rd party .NET app). • Excel data into PowerPoint slides

  I have already found some helpful sites but I'm still unable to do what I want. My Excel file contains few columns and multiple rows. All the data from one row would be in one slide but data from different cells in that one row should go to a specific elements in PP slide. At first, is it possible to export data from an Excel cell into a specific text box in PP? For example, I would like to have all data from the first column of each row go to a Text box 1. Let's say I have 100 rows so I would have 100 slides and each slide would have Text bow 1 with correct data. Text box of slide 66 would have data from the first column of row 66. Then all data from the second column of each row would go to a text bow 2 and so on. I tried to do some macros with bad success. I also tried to use Word outlines and export them into PP (New slide - Slides from Outline) but there seems to be a bug since I got 250 pages of gibberish. I had only two paragraphs and both had one word. First paragraph used Heading 1 style and second paragraph used Normal style. Sites what I have found, use VB and/or some other programming language to create slides from Excel sheets. I have tried to add those VB codes into my macros but none of them hasn't worked so far. • OSX: Mimic Ubuntu IP Masquerading via iptables with ipfw

  Good day, I am attempting to replicate a setup I have between a router and an Ubuntu PC, and have the same setup working on my MacBook (10.6, Snow Leopard). First, I have a router that has a USB port. When I plug it into my Ubuntu PC, it creates an RNDIS connection, allowing me to connect to the router over the USB cable via an IP connection. When I plug it into my computer via USB, it gets assigned an IP address of 172.16.84.1, and a new adapter appears when I type ifconfig. I can then SSH into the device via ssh [email protected]. When I log in to the device, I flush the routes, then create the default route: admin@localhost> route -f admin@localhost> route add default 172.16.84.2 Now, in my Ubuntu machine, I use iptables to enable IP masquerading: root@Valhalla> sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 172.16.84.2 -j MASQUERADE Once this is all done, the router has internet access over the USB connection to my PC. I am trying to replicate this exact setup on my MacBook now (Snow Leopard), but iptables does not exist for OSX, not even a Macports version exists. I have scoured through other questions on StackOverflow that cover the usage of the ipfw command, which apparently works as a drop-in replacement for iptables. However, the syntax is significantly different, and I'm pretty much lost. Does anyone with some experience with ipfw have some suggestions on how I could accomplish this and create a NAT connection via IP masquerading like I could with my Ubuntu PC? • PHP scripts randomly becoming really slow to respond - Database lockup?

  Hi All, I wasn't sure whether to post this here or on stackoverflow, so apologies if its in the wrong place. I have about 7 php scripts running on a centOS VPS. Each of these scripts contacts a game server and processes the logs, with the logs it either does some database queries or sends info back to the game server. I am having an issue where some of the scripts will randomly become REALLY slow to respond and I don't know where to start with my debugging. Each script connects to its own database schema but on the same MySQL server. Each script will do about 4 inserts per second and twice as many select statements on their respective databases. I thought a database lockup may cause the issue but some console messages that are read from the database are sent to the game servers console without issue every 30 seconds, even when the script is slow to responding to other commands. Non of the scripts are using a lot of memory or CPU power. About 0.1% each. I know this information is really vague but I don't know linux very well at all (in fact, top is about my limit) and I really don't know where to start debugging this. Thanks.

• Window 7 image in vmware will allow network connection out but not http

  I am currently trying to create a set of images to deploy on my network, but I've run in to a snag. When I create my own Windows 7 image I can successfully use NAT for connecting to the network but whenever I try to access a webpage I get nothing. To be more specific, All firewalls/iptables are disabled on my host machine, my virtual machine, and my network. I can do lookups and all addresses respond correctly (i'm even using Google's DNS). On the host OS i have full connectivity. On the virtual machine I can ping any device I want and all addresses resolve correctly. Within a browser I cannot reach any page via hostname or IP. I feel almost like port 80 is being blocked but i can't find any reason this would be the case. If anyone has had this occur before, I would love some insight to the problem. I understand this question is a bit out of the norm for stackoverflow, but I've run out of ideas. Thank you for any help you can provide.

• PHP/MySQL Performance Testing with Just PHP

  I'm trying to diagnose a server where the website is loading very slowly, but unfortunately my client has only provided me with FTP access. I've got FTP access so I can upload PHP scripts, but can't set up any other server side tools. I have access to phpMyAdmin, but not direct access to the MySQL server. It is also unfortunately a Windows server (and we've been a Linux shop for over a decade now). So, if I wan to evaluate MySQL & disk speed performance through PHP on a generic server, what is the best way to do this? There are already tools like: https://github.com/raphaelm/php-benchmark or https://github.com/InfinitySoft/php-benchmark But I'm surprised there isn't something that someone has already set up & configured to just run through and do some basic testing of a server's responsiveness. Every time we evaluate a new server environment it's handy to be able to compare it to an existing one quickly to see if there are any anomalies. I guess I'd just hoped that someone else had written up a script to do this already. I know I have, but that was before Github when there was a handy place to post scraps of code like this. • POST Fail via AJAX Request?

  I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening. This is kind of a repost (submitted to stackoverflow, but maybe a server issue?). I am running a javascript log out function called logOut() that has make a jQuery ajax call to a php script... function logOut(){ var data = new Object; data.log_out = true; $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'http://www.mydomain.com/functions.php', data: data, success: function() { alert('done'); } }); } the php function it calls is here: if(isset($_POST['log_out'])){ $query = "INSERT INTO `token_manager` (`ip_address`) VALUES('logOutSuccess')"; $connection->runQuery($query); // <-- my own database class... // omitted code that clears session etc... die(); } Now, 18 hours out of the day this works, but for some reason, every once in a while, the POST data will not trigger my query. (this will last about an hour or so). I figured out the post data is not being set by adding this at the end of my script... $query = "INSERT INTO `token_manager` (`ip_address`) VALUES('POST FAIL')"; $connection->runQuery($query); So, now I know for certain my log out function is being skipped because in my database is the following data: if it were NOT being skipped, my data would show up like this: I know it is being skipped for two reasons, one the die() at the end of my first function, and two, if it were a success a "logOutSuccess" would be registered in the table. Any thoughts? One friend says it's a janky hosting company (hostgator.com). I personally like them because they are cheap and I'm a fan of cpanel. But, if that's the case??? Thanks in advance. -J

• Setting up a localhost mail server on Mac OSX

  I asked this over on stackoverflow. I would love to be able to test php webapps that require emailing registration info etc. on my mac. I downloaded a version of CommuniGate Pro. I need to mail either to an account inside or outside (whichever is best) of the localhost. Again this would be used for testing purposes to verify and debug my code prior to uploading to a hosting service. Any ideas, help and/or examples would be very much appreciated. If it would be easier I could go over to Windows XP. That would just mean setting up wamp and transfering my files over from the mac side via dropbox. I got the local mailserver to work so I can send emails between accounts. However, I cannot seem to get the php code to work. • BizTalk configuration broken following WCF hotfix installation

  I usually post over on StackOverflow, but thought this was probably better suited to ServerFault. Please migrate if I'm wrong! I am developing a WCF service and a BizTalk application on my workstation at the moment. As part of the WCF service, I had to install hotfix 971493 from Microsoft which updates some core WCF assemblies. Following installation of that hotfix, I am now experiencing severe issues in my existing BizTalk application. When I attempt to configure the properties of an existing WCF-Custom receive location, I get this error: Error loading properties (System.IO.FileLoadException) The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) If I click OK (the same error repeats four times) I eventually see the WCF-Custom properties dialog. However if I click on the various tabs, I continue to receive errors: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) (Microsoft.BizTalk.Adapter.Wcf.Admin) The WCF-Custom receive location was working yesterday, and I installed the hotfix this morning. I'm guessing these two are related, and that BizTalk somehow has a reference to the old WCF assemblies. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

• How do I find funny pictures?

  No, not lolcats. And I'm not really looking for a specific site, either. I have often wished that I had some funny picture to illustrate a presentation, a website, a post, an email, or something else. Google image search and stock photo services have hardly ever helped me, although that may be because I'm doing something wrong. Jeff Atwood seems to have no problem to find funny pictures for his codinghorror and stackoverflow blogs, as well as for the error messages on the trilogy sites. One of my favourites was this elephant. Other bloggers also seem to be quite good at it. I'm wondering if I simply lack the creativity or if there's sources or methods I don't know about. I could think of the following ways to get pictures, but I'm not sure whether this is really "how they do it". keep a collection of pictures that you stumbled upon and liked (takes quite some time to build up to a proper library), when you need a picture, there's one in there maybe have pictures on paper, too, like from magazines or ads. when you are looking for a picture, search online (Flickr, Google, stock photos). This has never really worked for me, I don't know why. produce the pictures yourself, i. e. have a good library of source material or find some online and apply some creativity and suitable software. I could imagine that this could work well once you have the practice.
