  • Java Web Application

    I am interested in creating a simple web application that will take in user input, convert it to an XML file and send the file to a database. Coding wise I feel I am okay, it is just the general setup and what implementation to use I am a bit unsure of. At the moment I have a JSP page containing a form, the user fills out the form and on submit a get method is sent to a servlet, in the servlet doGet() method the servlet is instantiating a java object and passing it the user inputted data. The java object then writes that data to an XML file and sends it to the database via REST. All I would be interested to know is if this the standard/optimal way of creating such a web application. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks

  • Method for finding memory leak in large Java heap dumps

    I have to find a memory leak in a Java application. I have some experience with this but would like advice on a methodology/strategy for this. Any reference and advice is welcome. About our situation: Heap dumps are larger than 1 GB We have heap dumps from 5 occasions. We don't have any test case to provoke this. It only happens in the (massive) system test environment after at least a weeks usage. The system is built on a internally developed legacy framework with so many design flaws that they are impossible to count them all. Nobody understands the framework in depth. It has been transfered to one guy in India who barely keeps up with answering e-mails. We have done snapshot heap dumps over time and concluded that there is not a single component increasing over time. It is everything that grows slowly. The above points us in the direction that it is the frameworks homegrown ORM system that increases its usage without limits. (This system maps objects to files?! So not really a ORM) Question: What is the methodology that helped you succeed with hunting down leaks in a enterprise scale application?

Anytime i try to connect to an oracle database using OCI8. I'm not sure that oci8 is install properly. Can someone provide steps for installation of OCI8 using Mamp Pro?

    When I run GTK applications on KDE, they use the QtCurve theme that matches my color and font scheme as configured in the KDE System Settings application. However GTK applications run as superuser use the old default GNOME, regardless of whether I run them with kdesudo, gksudo, or sudo on a terminal. For example, here's gedit run as superuser on top, and under my normal user account on the bottom: Strangely, KDE applications run with kdesudo display the default Oxygen styling but use my settings when run with sudo on a terminal. Is there any way to configure the stying GTK applications use when run as superuser on KDE?

    I am trying to install Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit. To some this might not be rocket science but I can't understand what the options under the install screen "Specify Home Details" mean. The defaults given suggest that I use Oracle Base and install software under my own account name. It also suggests that each user should have a separate Oracle Base. This seems counter intuitive to me. I am doing a server install after all. All I want to use the installation for is to connect to an Oracle Database from Reporting Services. Can I safely ignore this and just accept the defaults? What are the implications if I change the location to a common directory?

When selecting the table product I get ORA-00942: table or view does not exist I have tried this solution but I don't have sufficiënt rights to add a new user. I get ORA-01031: insufficient privileges I am logged on as ADMIN to oracle application express. The environment we use is windows server 2003. What can I do to 1) access my tables and 2) get back the administration rights I am supposed to have?

  • OS X: How to create a user account with access to the applications that she has installed only.

    Till now, I've been the sole and proud owner of an iMac. I've always logged in as an administrator and I've also installed a bunch of software following the standard procedure of dragging and dropping it into the Applications folder. This is about to change, as sharing it with a friend makes a lot of sense now that I only have time to use the computer in the mornings, and she can only use it at nights. I thought this was going to be really easy: Just create a user account for her and that's all, I thought. Unfortunately, this is not the case. When she logins into the computer using her username and password, she has access to the same applications I've installed. Even the same applications that I setup to automatically start when I login start for her when she does. How can I setup a user that has only access to the applications that she has installed, but none of the ones installed by other users? Many thanks

    The only thing I need indexed in the /Applications folder are the .app files. Is there any way to setup a filter to have mds or Spotlight ignore everything in /Applications except .apps? Otherwise, would it be possible to setup a rule for Alfred to omit any non-.app records from /Applications? I still want documents indexed and returned, just not from that specific directory. OS X 10.6.8 if you're wondering.

    In Windows XP Alt-tab keypress sequence to select applications, how can I ensure that certain applications always appear, in a certain order, with others always excluded? Background for asking is that most XP-based machines that I am working with on a shop floor present the list of shortcuts in a certain order and certain applications. There is one machine however, that displays an additional application. This is a hindrance to the users of the machines, as the nature of their work is routine and this variation disrupts the remembered sequence, "disrupts their flow". Thoughts? Being a good superuser, I research first before asking, and I found: Applications randomly alt-tab? (especially full screen games) Restore Alt-Tab behavior so that minimizing an app once again moves it to the end? (2. looks close to the control I need, but would need more finer, preciser control over what appears in the selection). Suggestions? (Thanks in advance.)

  • Configuring WCF to Handle a Signature on a SOAP Message from an Oracle Server

    I'm trying to use WCF to consume a web service provided by a third-party's Oracle Application Server. I pass a username and password and as part of the response the web service returns a standard security tag in the header which includes a digest and signature. With my current setup, I successfully send a request to the server and the web service sends the expected response data back. However, when parsing the response WCF throws a MessageSecurityException, with an InnerException.Message of "Supporting token signatures not expected." My guess is that WCF wants me to configure it to handle the signature and verify it. I have a certificate from the third party that hosts the web service that I should be able to use to verify the signature.   • How to create a "dependency graph" for IT assets

    One of my customers is trying to create an interactive "matrix" of interdependencies for the various applications used in their company (it's a travel&leisure company with around 2500 employees). The idea (still at the prototype stage) is to create a sort of Map, based on Visio or similar tool, which traces the communication and interdependencies between all the IT assets in the company, so that when someone asks for a change they can get an overview of the impacts. This was mentioned in a casual setting and it will not be my responsability to directly work on this, but I did contribute the little I know already in terms of vaguely related methodologies (Zachman Framework). I'd like to hear from the people in here if they know of methodologies, or tools, that may help this kind of effort, and if they have any specific experience to contribute. I'll digest the answers and send the result back to my customer, hoping this may be of some help with their task (which I consider a bit visionary and prone to all the pitfalls of any documentation project, but still well worth pursuing).

  • Improving Manageability of Virtual Environments

    Boot Environments for Solaris 10 Branded Zones Until recently, Solaris 10 Branded Zones on Solaris 11 suffered one notable regression: Live Upgrade did not work. The individual packaging and patching tools work correctly, but the ability to upgrade Solaris while the production workload continued running did not exist. A recent Solaris 11 SRU (Solaris 11.1 SRU 6.4) restored most of that functionality, although with a slightly different concept, different commands, and without all of the feature details. This new method gives you the ability to create and manage multiple boot environments (BEs) for a Solaris 10 Branded Zone, and modify the active or any inactive BE, and to do so while the production workload continues to run. Background In case you are new to Solaris: Solaris includes a set of features that enables you to create a bootable Solaris image, called a Boot Environment (BE). This newly created image can be modified while the original BE is still running your workload(s). There are many benefits, including improved uptime and the ability to reboot into (or downgrade to) an older BE if a newer one has a problem. In Solaris 10 this set of features was named Live Upgrade. Solaris 11 applies the same basic concepts to the new packaging system (IPS) but there isn't a specific name for the feature set. The features are simply part of IPS. Solaris 11 Boot Environments are not discussed in this blog entry. Although a Solaris 10 system can have multiple BEs, until recently a Solaris 10 Branded Zone (BZ) in a Solaris 11 system did not have this ability. This limitation was addressed recently, and that enhancement is the subject of this blog entry. This new implementation uses two concepts. The first is the use of a ZFS clone for each BE. This makes it very easy to create a BE, or many BEs. This is a distinct advantage over the Live Upgrade feature set in Solaris 10, which had a practical limitation of two BEs on a system, when using UFS. The second new concept is a very simple mechanism to indicate the BE that should be booted: a ZFS property. The new ZFS property is named com.oracle.zones.solaris10:activebe (isn't that creative? ). It's important to note that the property is inherited from the original BE's file system to any BEs you create. In other words, all BEs in one zone have the same value for that property. When the (Solaris 11) global zone boots the Solaris 10 BZ, it boots the BE that has the name that is stored in the activebe property.   • Log4r : logger inheritance, yaml configuration, alternatives ?

    Hello, I'm pretty new to ruby environments and I was looking for a nice logging framework to use it my ruby and rails applications. In my previous experiences I have successfully used log4j and log4p (the perl port) and was expecting the same level of usability (and maturity) with log4r. However I must say that there are a number of things that are not clear at all in the log4r framework. 1 Logger Inheritance The logger inheritance does not seem to be managed at all ! If I declare a logger named 'myapp' and then try to get a logger name 'myapp::engine', the lookup will end with a NameError. I would expect that the framework returns the root logger according to the naming scheme and to use the 'myapp' logger. Q1 : Of course I can work around this and manage the names by myself with a lookup method, however is there a cleaner way to do this without any extra coding ? 2 YAML configuration Second thing that confuses me is the yaml configuration. On the log4r site there are literally no information about this system, the doc links forward to missing pages, so all the info I can find about is contained in the examples directory of the gem. I was pretty confused with the fact that the yaml configuration must contain the pre_config section, and that I need to define my own levels. If I remove the pre_config secion, or replace all the “custom” levels by the standard ones ( debug, info, warn, fatal ) , the example will throw the following error : log4r/yamlconfigurator.rb:68:in `decode_yaml': Log level must be in 0..7 (ArgumentError) So there seems to be no way of using a simple file where we only declare the loggers and appenders for the framework. Q2 : I realy think that I missed something and that must be a way of providing a simple yaml conf file. Do you have any examples of such an usage ? 3 Variables substitution in XML file Q3 : The Yaml configuration system seems to provide such a feature however I was unable to find a similar feature with XML files. Any ideas ? 4 Alternatives ? I must say that I'm very disappointed by the feature level and the maturity of log4r compared to the log4j and other log4j ports. I run into this framework with a solid background of logging APIs in other languages and find myself working around in all kinds just to make 'basic things' running in a “real world application”. By that I mean a complex application composed of several gems, console/scripting apps, and a rails web front end where the configuration must be mutualized and where we make intensive usage of namespaces and inheritance. I've run several searches in order to find something more suitable or mature, but did not find anything similar.
