  • Got a minus one from a read call.

    I connect to a database with read only access using SQL developer. It's a TNS connection. I use a tnsnames.ora, forwarding port script and SQL Developer. In the past, occasionally, when connecting, I get a error message Got a minus one from a read call. Vendor Code 0 If I do a reboot, it goes away. Another friend suggested changed the forwarding port which worked for him. I recently upgraded to a new computer and now it seems that I am getting the error message consistently. Reboot or changing forwarding port does not help at all. The port forwarding script contains something like this putty -L ::1521 Does anybody have any idea? Thanks.

  • How to optimize Core Data query for full text search

    Can I optimize a Core Data query when searching for matching words in a text? (This question also pertains to the wisdom of custom SQL versus Core Data on an iPhone.) I'm working on a new (iPhone) app that is a handheld reference tool for a scientific database. The main interface is a standard searchable table view and I want as-you-type response as the user types new words. Words matches must be prefixes of words in the text. The text is composed of 100,000s of words. In my prototype I coded SQL directly. I created a separate "words" table containing every word in the text fields of the main entity. I indexed words and performed searches along the lines of SELECT id, * FROM textTable JOIN (SELECT DISTINCT textTableId FROM words WHERE word BETWEEN 'foo' AND 'fooz' ) ON id=textTableId LIMIT 50 This runs very fast. Using an IN would probably work just as well, i.e. SELECT * FROM textTable WHERE id IN (SELECT textTableId FROM words WHERE word BETWEEN 'foo' AND 'fooz' ) LIMIT 50 The LIMIT is crucial and allows me to display results quickly. I notify the user that there are too many to display if the limit is reached. This is kludgy. I've spent the last several days pondering the advantages of moving to Core Data, but I worry about the lack of control in the schema, indexing, and querying for an important query. Theoretically an NSPredicate of textField MATCHES '.*\bfoo.*' would just work, but I'm sure it will be slow. This sort of text search seems so common that I wonder what is the usual attack? Would you create a words entity as I did above and use a predicate of "word BEGINSWITH 'foo'"? Will that work as fast as my prototype? Will Core Data automatically create the right indexes? I can't find any explicit means of advising the persistent store about indexes. I see some nice advantages of Core Data in my iPhone app. The faulting and other memory considerations allow for efficient database retrievals for tableview queries without setting arbitrary limits. The object graph management allows me to easily traverse entities without writing lots of SQL. Migration features will be nice in the future. On the other hand, in a limited resource environment (iPhone) I worry that an automatically generated database will be bloated with metadata, unnecessary inverse relationships, inefficient attribute datatypes, etc. Should I dive in or proceed with caution?

    SQL Server Edition: 2008 Enterprise Visual Studio: 2010 w/ .NET 4.0 SSMS 2008 Addin - Data Scripter project source code on CodePlex references Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlTools.VSIntegration.dll I have referenced the DLL under <<Microsoft SQL Server install location>>\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE But here is the oddity. Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlTools.VSIntegration.dll contains a namespace Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration, which in turn contains ServiceCache (public sealed). As soon as I add the reference, ServiceCache is highlighted (meaning there is no reference issue) But the problem arises when I compile the project and VS 2010 throws up an error that it cannot find ServiceCache. The name 'ServiceCache' does not exist in the current context Why is that ServiceCache is not visible during compile time but looks like it's available right after adding the assembly? And Reflector does show that ServiceCache is part of the assembly that the project is referencing, but Visual Studio intellisense fails to display it. Any had this kind of problem? [UPDATE] Some screenshots Reflector clearly shows ServiceCache But Visual Studio 2010 says, otherwise...

  • What really happens when I use varchar(10) in the sqlite command-line shell?

    I'm messing around with SQLite for the first time by working through some of the SQLite documentation. In particular, I'm using Command Line Shell For SQLite and the SoupToNuts SQLite Tutorial on Sourceforge. According to the SQLite datatype documentation, there are only 5 datatypes in SQLite. However, in the two tutorial documents above, I see where the authors use commands such as create table tbl1(one varchar(10), two smallint); or create table t1 (t1key INTEGER PRIMARY KEY,data TEXT,num double,timeEnter DATE); which contain datatypes that aren't listed by SQLite, yet these commands work just fine. Additionally, when I ran .dump to see the SQL statements, these datatype specifications are preserved. So, what gives? Does SQLite keep a reference for any datatype specified in the SQL yet converts it behind the scenes to one of its 5 datatypes? Or is there something else I'm missing?

    I'm trying to write a SQL Server database update script. I want to test for the existence of a column in a table, then if it doesn't exist add the column with a default value, and finally update that column based on the current value of a different column in the same table. I want this script to be runnable multiple times, the first time updating the table and on subsequent runs the script should be ignored. My script currently looks like the following: IF NOT EXISTS(SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'PurchaseOrder' AND COLUMN_NAME = 'IsDownloadable') BEGIN ALTER TABLE [dbo].[PurchaseOrder] ADD [IsDownloadable] bit NOT NULL DEFAULT 0 UPDATE [dbo].[PurchaseOrder] SET [IsDownloadable] = 1 WHERE [Ref] IS NOT NULL END SQL Server returns error "Invalid column name 'IsDownloadable'", i.e. I need to commit the DDL before I can update the column.     Hi, I need some help with vocabulary, I don't use Oracle that often but I am familiar with MySQL and SQL Server. I have an application I need to upgrade and migrate, and part of the procedure to do that involves exporting to an XML file, allowing the installer to create new database tables, then import to the new database tables from the XML file. In Oracle, my database connection specifies a username, password, and an SID. Let's call the SID, "COMPANY-APPS". This SID contains tables belonging to several applications, each of which connects with a different user ( "WIKIUSER", "BUGUSER", "TIMETRACKERUSER" ). My question is: Can I re-use the same user to create the new tables ( with the same names ). In MySQL or SQL Server, I would create a new database and grant my user privileges to create tables in it. OR, do I need to create a new database user for my upgraded tables?

    I have a userList, some users don't have a name (null). If I run the first LINQ query, I got an error saying "object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. var temp = (from a in userList where ((a.name == "john") && (a.name != null)) select a).ToList(); However, if I switch the order by putting the checking for null in front, then it works without throwing any error: var temp = (from a in userList where ((a.name != null) && (a.name == "john")) select a).ToList(); Why is that? If that's pure C# code (not LINQ), I think both would be the same. I don't have SQL profiler, I am just curious what will be the difference when they are being translated on SQL level.

    Hi, I wan't to compare two strings in a SQL request so I can retrieve the best match, the aim is to propose to an operator the best zip code possible. For example, in France, we have Integer Zip code, so I made an easy request : SELECT * FROM myTable ORDER BY abs(zip_code - 75000) This request returns first the data closest of Paris. Unfortunatelly, United Kingdom have zip code like AB421RS, so my request can't do it. I see in SQL Server a function 'Difference' : http://www.java2s.com/Code/SQLServer/String-Functions/DIFFERENCEworkoutwhenonestringsoundssimilartoanotherstring.htm But I use MySQL.. Is there anyone who have a good idea to do the trick in one simple request ? PS : the Levenshtein Distance will not do it, as I really wan't to compare string like if they were number. ABCDEF have to be closer to AWXYZ than to ZBCDEF.

    This is a strange one. I have a Dev SQL Server which has the stored proc on it, and the same stored proc when used with the same code on the UAT DB causes it to delete itself!     Hi all, Using DBI::DatabaseHandle#execute or DBI::DatabaseHandle#prepare it's not possible to run an sql script (with mutiple sql statments). The whitepapers of Windows Azure Platform say something like that: In its first release, the maximum size of a single database in SQL Azure Database is 10 gigabytes A few things are omitted in the technology’s first release, however, such as the SQL Common Language Runtime (CLR) and support for spatial data. (Microsoft says that both will be available in a future version.) I want to know that Microsoft had updated Windows Azure Platform and removed these limits or not?   • Using openrowset to read an Excel file into a temp table; how do I reference that table?

    I'm trying to write a stored procedure that will read an Excel file into a temp table, then massage some of the data in that table, then insert selected rows from that table into a permanent table. So, it starts like this: SET @SQL = "select * into #mytemptable FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'Excel 8.0;Database="+@file+";HDR=YES', 'SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]')" EXEC (@SQL) That much seems to work. However, if I then try something like this: Select * from #mytemptable I get an error: Invalid object name '#mytemptable' Why isn't #mytemptable recognized? Is there a way to have #mytemptable accessible to the rest of the stored procedure? Many thanks in advance!

    I am searching for an algorithm to fill several slots, which are already filled to some level. The current levels and the available quantity to fill are known Resulting levels should be as equal as possible, but existing level cannot be reduced Slots are filled from left to right, so left slots get higher level if equal level is impossible       The image above shows six examples, each column represents a slot. The grey area is already filled, the blue are is the expected position of the new elements. I could iterate through my slots and increase the quantity on the lowest slot by 1 until the available quantity is consumed, but I wonder about how to actually calculate the new filling levels. I am going to implement this with SQL/PL/SQL, other code is just as welcome though :)

    I'm trying to run SQuirreL SQL. I've downloaded it and installed it, but when I try to run it I get this error message: Java Virtual Machine Launcher. Could not find the main class. Program will exit. I get the gist of this, but I have not idea how to fix it. Any help? more info: I'm on Windows XP pro. I have java 1.6 installed, and other apps are running OK. The install ran OK. I believe I've followed the installation instructions correctly. To run it, I'm invoking the squirrel-sql.bat file.   • Last byte missing when casting from varbinary to varchar

    I got the last byte losing when converting varbinary to varchar in some case. For example: DECLARE @binary varbinary(8000), @char varchar(8000) set @binary = 0x000082 set @char = CAST(@binary as varchar(8000)) select BinaryLength=DATALENGTH(@binary), CharLength=DATALENGTH(@char) The result is BinaryLength CharLength 3 2 The affected byte value is from 0x81 - 0xFE. The stranger thing is that if I use varchar(MAX) instead varchar(8000) when casting, there is no any problem. Could someone tell me the root cause of the issue? PS: I run the sql in MS SQL server 2008. Thanks!

  • Any suggestions on data syncronization from a server to a desktop?

    I have a web based CRM system that stores all the client data from all the clients into one database (MS Sql Server). We need to build a system that maintains a local copy of the data for each client. So basically the client database will have all tables and columns except for the ClientId that is in ever server table. I am aware that I will need to add fields to the server to support synchronization. Are there any good solutions or components already out there to help me accomplish this? We are using MS Sql Server and .NET C#

  • How can I set MAXLENGTH on input fields automatically?

    I'm using ASP.NET MVC RC2. I have a set of classes that were auto-generated "Linq-to-SQL Classes", where each class models a table in my database. I have some default "edit" views that use the neat-o Html.TextBoxFor helper extension to render HTML input fields for the columns in a table. However, I notice that there is no MAXLENGTH attribute specified in the generated HTML. A quick google shows that you can add explicit attributes using TextBoxFor etc. but that would mean that I need to hard-code the values (and I need to remember to do it for every input). This seems pretty poor, considering that everything was automatically generated directly from the DB, so the size of the columns is known. (Although, to be fair, the web-side stuff has to work with any model objects, not just with Linq-to-SQL objects). Is there any nice way of getting this to do the right thing?

This details cannot be stored on server in any form due to security related policies. i got 2 approaches to handle this situation, 1. create hidden parameter file with login details and limit the access to owner. again the implication is i cannot store login data in any format on server 2. Create the user as OS authenticated and straight away login into sql without any userid/password I am not able to figure out risks involved in 2nd approach which u experienced folks could have come across. let me know if there is any other approach to handle password leakage issue

    I have AdventureWorks database mdf file in my VS 2010 project. Is there anyway I can create Membership tables inside my AdventureWorks database. I know I can detach the database attach in SQL SERVER 2008. Create the tables and then detach. But I don't have SQL SERVER 2008 and I want to see if this can be done using command line tool. I tried this but no use: aspnet_regsql.exe -d AdventureWorks.mdf -A mr -E -S .\SQLEXPRESS Update: If I right click and see the properties of the AdventureWorks.mdf database then it shows the name as "C4BE6C8DA139A060D14925377A7E63D0_64A_10\ADVENTUREWORKSWEBFORMS\ADVENTUREWORKSWEBFORMS\ADVENTUREWORKS\APP_DATA\ADVENTUREWORKS.MDF" This is interesting!
