  During the startup I see machine executing this thing for about 30 seconds: udev: waiting for uevents to be processed Then I get a quick message which says something like: devfs: timeout (50 seconds) I can't see the whole thing because after that system starts up very fast including Xfce. Now we've got: open source packages on Ubuntu that don't quite work out of the box (details on request). the actual source behind them, with a build process that depends on the c-shell and other obsolescences, available from two competing locations. a commercial packaging from Oracle a commercial package from Univa What I am really wishing for is something with the basic capabilities of this that is simple to install and maintain. Heck, I'd take a front-end to hadoop that just queues and distributes simple shell-script-defined jobs.

• Moving Windows XP from ICH10R RAID 5 to single disk using Linux [migrated]

  A friend's machine running Windows XP refused to boot recently which is running 3 SATA disks on RAID 5 (which was previously upgraded from RAID 1 not by me). I have determined there to be a disk failure. The disks have been replaced many times in the past few years. I wish to backup the RAID5 partition before I try anything to fix it. The RAID chipset used is ICH10R/DO. So, I plugged in an extra IDE drive and an Ubuntu USB key and looked at the RAID. The partitioning is a mess, but I did find at least one degraded but working RAID array with two partitions, one 79GB and the other 86GB. Then I: 1) Partitioned my IDE disk using fdisk to have a partition of 80GB and bootable, and marked as NTFS. 2) dd the contents of the array to the partition 3) disconnected everything else 4) inserted a Windows XP CD and ran fixboot, fixmbr, and bootcfg. They all run ok and claim that they worked. (e.g. bootcfg detects the Windows partition, fixboot returns saying that it was written correctly.) However, I'm still getting an error like "DISK FAILURE, BOOT DISK NOT FOUND". I have tried running the GRUB rescue disk, which also runs ok, but won't boot into Windows. It just stops with a flashing cursor after chainloader +1, boot. One clue may be that the partitions appear to be wack. One disk has a 79GB RAID partition on a 500GB drive with a offset, the second disk has a 320GB RAID partition across the whole drive. Additionally, the BIOS lists the RAID size as being 149GB. I don't see how this works. How are they even assembling the array when the partitions are so different? I have also tried running the Windows XP automated repair tool, but that didn't work either. I'm presuming this is something simple. Perhaps Windows is attempting to boot into RAID and, upon not finding it, simply crashing? Perhaps the 79GB partitions offset means that it's looking into the disk by that much? Please help!! To clarify: I want to make the single IDE disk bootable with a copy of the array so that I can prove/disprove that it's just that Windows has become corrupted, and use windows tools to correct it before attempting the same thing on the RAID array. That way I have a working backup and can show the process I used to fix it.

  I have Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS with Firefox 3.6.3. Unfortunately it is super easy to accidentally click Add To Dictionary on a word you do not want added into one's personal dictionary used in Firefox. How do I remove the word 'intsead' out of it? I tried some tutorials on the web that said to find ~/.mozilla/*.default/persdict.dat, but I could not see one. As well, others have complained that this file no longer exists in Firefox 3.

• Good Audio Splitter

  I need to get audio from my computer's headphone jack and push the output to 2 sets of speakers. I have tried using a cheap splitter from Fry's, but one set of speakers ends up acting as a microphone (!?) for the other set of speakers. What's the best way to split headphone output and get best quality with no interference on each set of speakers? I would, of course, also be interested in why the cheap splitter causes one set of speakers to start acting as a microphone.

• Deleting windows.edb and unchecking Indexing service lead to hard drive file records swapping

  I followed the instructions listed here:http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/09/18/turn-off-and-disable-search-indexing-service-in-windows-xp/ to free up space on hard drive by deleting the windows.edb indexing file... I also stopped windows search service as mentioned in the comments following the article. In addition to unchecking the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" check box on the properties dialog for the C:\ drive, I did the same for two usb connected hard drives (J:\ and I:\ ). I'm not sure why I did that, thought it might shrink the windows.edb file so I wouldn't have to delete it (which sounded a bit risky in my ears at the time). The file of course didn't shrink so I ended up deleting it and freeing up over 3 GB of space, yeehaw. However, as soon as I had done this I could not access the usb connected hard drives anymore. The error I got was "I:\photos is not accessible" "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I tried to open the photos directory on I:\ Here is where I enter the twilight zone... I try disconnecting I:\ usb hard drive. But XP shows me that instead J:\ drive has disconnected and I:\ is still there. So I disconnect both drives and restart the computer. I then connect one drive, but it lists up the contents of the other drive on root level. I tried connecting the drives vice versa and the same thing happens. I try taking one of the hard drives to another computer and when I connect it there it lists up not its own contents but the contents of the other hard drive and gives the same error as above when I try and access any of the folders (even folders on the root that have the same name as folders on the other drive (e.g. J:\photos and I:\photos)??? And no, this is not a me mixing up my drive letters. Computer Manager - Disk management shows the same result as explorer: The drive size is correct (one is 500GB, the other is 640GB) but the drive name is of the opposite drive, as long as the contents. Also, one drive was full of data and the other almost empty but they incorrectly show their free space status of the other drive. Somehow the usb drives seem to have switched file tables, file records, boot records or something, extremely weird! Even weirder, if I try and create a text file or folder on this drive, it works fine, accessing them, saving, whatever, all good, but accessing any other data on the drive gives me an error. Does anyone have a clue what is going on and more importantly, how I can restore the correct folder listings to access my family photos ??? cheers, linni

• Multiple nt52 entries in bootmgr

  I have a machine with Windows XP, Server 2003 R2, and Server 2008 R2. Right now, bootmgr has one entry for Server 2008 R2 and one entry for ntldr, which then leads to the ntldr boot.ini menu. Is it possible to add two different nt52 entries on two partitions so that I can access all three OSes from the bootmgr menu? Right now, Server 2008 and XP are in logical drives on an extended partition, but (I assume) I can image them onto basic partitions if necessary.

  I installed xampp back around January 2009, and CF8 to test coldfusion on my macbook (note: I do not think that this issue is related to CF, but only xampp). I only ever used the apache part of xampp, and this was working for over a year. In the last couple of months at the most I've started getting the following error message (even for none CF sites, and non .cfm pages, the error occurs for .html files..): Access forbidden! I have the CALs for it, it's just not set up correctly. When one user tries to log in, it boots the other out. What I need is to present to them a different session, just each as logged in as admin.   I've just found that my WSS 3.0 server had two OWSTIMER.EXE services running: SharePoint Timer Service v11 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\BIN\OWSTIMER.EXE" Windows SharePoint Services Timer v12 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\OWSTIMER.EXE" Since I'm running WSS v3, I was expecting to have only one SharePoint Timer instance, and that should be the one in th "12" folder. Should I just stop the other service and keep only the "Windows SharePoint Services Timer" (v12) running?

• Privoxy-like proxy that handles multiple parallel connections?

  Hello I use Privoxy on my XP host to filter/rewrite web pages, but it's slower because all connections go through Privoxy's single port. According to this post on StackOverflow, by default, browsers support more than one simultaneous connection, which would explain why going through Privoxy is slower. Does someone know of a similar application that could handle more than one connection? Thank you.

• Can't transfer images from a camera connected to usb2 port on a pcmcia adapter

  I have an old laptop (HP OmniBook vt6200, WinXp pro, sp2) that only has usb1 ports. Transferring pictures from a digital camera is too slow, so I thought of trying one of those pccards carrying usb2 ports (D-Link Dub C2 in my case). Connecting the camera to one of the ports on the pccard, Picasa seems to freeze trying to read the camera contents, until I either disconnect the camera or the pccard. Any idea on what's wrong?
