  • MVVM pattern and nested view models - communication and lookup lists

    I am using Prism for a new application that I am creating. There are several lookup lists that will be used in several places in the application. Therefore it makes sense to define it once and use that everywhere I need that functionality. My current solution is to use typed data templates to render the controls inside a content control. <DataTemplate DataType={x:Type ListOfCountriesViewModel}> <ComboBox ItemsSource={Binding Countries} SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedCountry"/> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType={x:Type ListOfRegionsViewModel}> <ComboBox ItemsSource={Binding Countries} SelectedItem={Binding SelectedRegion} /> </DataTemplate> public class ParentViewModel { SelectedCountry get; set; SelectedRegion get; set; ListOfCountriesViewModel CountriesVM; ListOfRegionsViewModel RgnsVM; } Then in my window I have 2 content controls and the rest of the controls <ContentControl Content="{Binding CountriesVM}"></ContentControl> <ContentControl Content="{Binding RgnsVM}"></ContentControl> <Rest of controls on view> At the moment I have this working and the SelectedItems for the combo boxes are publising events via EventAggregator from the child view models which are then subscribed to in the parent view model. I am not sure that this is the best way to go as I can imagine I would end up with a lot of events very quickly and it will become unwieldy. Also if I was to use the same view model on another window it will publish the event and this parent viewmodel is subscribed to it which could have unintended consequences. My questions are :- Is this the best way to put lookup lists in a view which can be re-used across screens? How do I make it so that the combobox which is bound to the child viewmodel sets the relevant property on the parent viewmodel without using events / mediator. e.g in this case SelectedCountry for example? Any alternative implementation proposals for what I am trying to do? I have a feeling I am missing something obvious and there is so much info it is hard to know what is right so any help would be most gratefully received.

I've used Office Interop before to generate Excel spreadsheets, but those apps run on a PC that has office installed.   • Combining MVVM Light Toolkit and Unity 2.0

    This is more of a commentary than a question, though feedback would be nice. I have been tasked to create the user interface for a new project we are doing. We want to use WPF and I wanted to learn all of the modern UI design techniques available. Since I am fairly new to WPF I have been researching what is available. I think I have pretty much settled on using MVVM Light Toolkit (mainly because of its "Blendability" and the EventToCommand behavior!), but I wanted to incorporate IoC also. So, here is what I have come up with. I have modified the default ViewModelLocator class in a MVVM Light project to use a UnityContainer to handle dependency injections. FullScreenImage class inherits QLabel. After some delay, the fullscreen picture should be hidden, so I use QTimer to trigger an event after some delay. The event handler is the hideOnScreen method which hides the label and should clear the memory. The problem is the following: Whenever I call QPixmap::fromImage, it allocates the memory for the pixmap data and copies the data from QImage memory buffer to the QPixmap memory buffer. After the label is hidden, the QPixmap data still remains allocated, and even worse, after the new QPixmap::fromImage call the new chunk of memory is allocated for the new picture, and the old data is not freed from memory. This causes a memory leak (cca 10 MB per method call with my testing pictures). How can I solve that leak? I've even tried to create a private QPixmap variable, store pixmap created by the QPixmap::fromImage to it, and then tried to call its destructor in hideOnScreen method, but it didn't help. Is there a non-static way to create QPixmap from QImage? Or even better, is there a way to create QPixmap directly from IplImage* ? Thank you in advance for your answers.

    I try to use the GradientDrawable to set a gradient to some backgrounds and buttons. Sadly the documentation is not very detailed. What are the main attributes to configure the gradient? I understand start and endcolor but some of the other attributes could need some explanation. At the moment I used images as the background for the buttons but a drawable defined in XML would be much nicer. I try to get a look like this (It is a very light gradient):

    Hello, all day long I am sitting and trying to find out why binding to AvalonEdits Document property isn't working. AvalonEdit is an advanced WPF text editor - part of the SharpDevelop project.(it's going to be used in SharpDevelop v4 Mirador). So when I set up a simple project - one TextEditor (that's the AvalonEdits real name in the library) and made a simple class that has one property - Document and it returns a dummy object with some static text the binding is working perfectly. However in real life solution I'm binding a collection of SomeEditor objects to TabControl. The eventual following stack trace is ca used by an error thrown for debugging purposes as well as to attempt to terminat e the thread which caused the illegal access, and has no functional impact. java.lang.IllegalStateException at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1273) How to resolve this issue.

  • Dissertation about website and database security - in need of some pointers

    Hi, I am on my dissertation in my final year at university at the moment. One of the areas I need to research is security - for both websites and for databases. I currently have sections on the following: Website Form security - such as data validation. This section is more about preventing errors made by legitimate users as much as possible rather than stopping hackers, for example comparing a field to a regular expression and giving them meaningful feedback on any errors which did occur so as to stop it happening again. Constraints. For example if a value must be true or false then use a checkbox. If it is likely to be one of several values then use a dropdown or a set of radio boxes, and so on. If the value is unpredictable then use regular expressions to limit what characters they are allowed to enter, and to restrict the length of the string, and sometimes to limit the format (such as for dates / times, post codes and so on). Sometimes you can limit permissions to the form. This is on the occasion that you know exactly who (whether it be peoples names or a group of people - such as administrators or employees) is going to need access to the form. Restricting permissions will stop members of the public from being able to access the form. Symbols or strings which could be used maliciously or cause the website to act incorrectly (such as the script tag) should be filtered out or html encoded. Captcha images can be used to prevent automated systems from filling in and submitting the form. There are some hacks for file uploads - such as using double extensions - which can allow hackers to upload malicious files. Databases (this is nowhere near done yet but the sections I have planned are listed below) SQL statements vs stored procedures Throwing an error when one of the variables contains particular characters or groups of characters (I cant remember what characters they are, but I have seen a message thrown back at me before where I have tried to enter html or something into a text area). SQL Injection - and ways around it, with some examples. Does anyone have any hints and tips on where I could go for some decent, reliable information either about these areas or about other areas of security that I could cover? Thanks in advance.   • Eclipse Search Menus disabled randomly

    I use Eclipse 3.3 in my daily work, and have also used Eclipse 3.2 extensively as well. In both versions, sometimes the Search options (Java Search, File Search, etc) in the menu get disabled, seemingly at random times. However, with CTRL + H, I am able to access the search functionality. Does anyone know why this happens? Has it been fixed in Eclipse 3.4?

  • Linux - serial port read returning EAGAIN...

    Hello all! I am having some trouble reading some data from a serial port I opened the following way. I've used this instance of code plenty of times and all worked fine, but now, for some reason that I cant figure out, I am completely unable to read anything from the serial port. But... when I do a read afterwards, I get a "Resource Temporarily Unavailable" error from errno. I tested select to see when the file descriptor had something t read... but it always times out! I read data like this: ret = read(hCom, rxchar, n); and I always get an EAGAIN and I have no idea why. All help would be appreciated. Cheers

I just don't want to buy a bunch of domains and then later regret not changing the domain registrar when i registered them. I will also be using google app engine and i would like to ultimately have a subdomain configured to use amazon cloud front.

  • iTextSharp is missing HeaderFooter class

    This is weird, I am currently using iTextSharp and I want to add a Header & Footer to my PDFs. In all the examples they simply create a new HeaderFooter() object. However, I have iTextSharp libraries all imported but the HeaderFooter is not defined. I've used Reflector to see if I can find out whereabouts the class is and its missing?! Does anyone know what has happened to this class?

  • Get Local IP-Address using Boost.Asio

    Hey, I'm currently searching for a portable way of getting the local IP-addresses. Because I'm using Boost anyway I thought it would be a good idea to use Boost.Asio for this task. There are serveral examples on the net which should do the trick. Examples: Official Boost.Asio Documentation Some Asian Page I tried both codes with just slight modifications. The Code on Boost.Doc was changed to not resolve "www.boost.org" but "localhost" or my hostname instead. For getting the hostname I used boost::asio::ip::host_name() or typed it directly as a string. Additionally I wrote my own code which was a merge of the above examples and my (little) knowledge I gathered from the Boost Documentation and other examples. All the sources worked, but they did just return the following IP: 127.0.1.1 (Thats not a typo, its .1.1 at the end) I run and compiled the code on Ubuntu 9.10 with GCC 4.4.1 A colleague tried the same code on his machine and got 127.0.0.2 (Not a typo too...) He compiled and run on Suse 11.0 with GCC 4.4.1 (I'm not 100% sure) I don't know if it is possible to change the localhost (127.0.0.1), but I know that neither me or my colleague did it. ifconfig says loopback uses 127.0.0.1. ifconfig also finds the public IP I am searching for (141.200.182.30 in my case, subnet is 255.255.0.0) So is this a Linux-issue and the code is not as portable as I thought? Do I have to change something else or is Boost.Asio not working as a solution for my problem at all? I know there are much questions about similar topics on Stackoverflow and other pages, but I cannot find information which is useful in my case. If you got useful links, it would be nice if you could point me to it.
