  • In BASH how can i find my system on active internet interface, what is the upload speed?

    - by YumYumYum
I am trying to write an TUI bandwidth trace application which on query can instantly tell me, that my download and upload speed is XXXX. I have figured out that download i can use with wget and parse it using BASH, but how do i get the upload speed? Example of download parse method: 1) Remote download : wget http://x.x.com:7007/files/software/vnc.zip Length: 1594344 (1.5M) [application/zip] Saving to: `vnc.zip' 100%[==================================================================>] 1,594,344 573K/s in 2.7s 2012-03-24 11:35:22 (573 KB/s) - `vnc.zip' saved [1594344/1594344] 2) Local download tells Length: 1594344 (1.5M) [application/zip] Saving to: `vnc.zip' 100%[==================================================================>] 1,594,344 --.-K/s in 0.1s 2012-03-24 06:43:04 (11.4 MB/s) - `vnc.zip' saved [1594344/1594344]

  • Ubuntu option vanishes after setting up windows XP(?) [closed]

    - by Ravi
I have installed both windows XP as well as Ubuntu 9.04 on my machine.I can choose between them using dual boot option at the startup.Up to this, it is fine. But unfortunately when my XP crashes, I need to install XP again. But when I do it,after installing XP successfully, dual boot option no longer appears at the startup. So the Ubuntu goes in vein. What is the problem here? How do I solve it?

  • inode_operations , warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type

    - by djTeller
Hi everyone, I'm trying to compile a simple Kernel program that read and write from a proc file. I'm trying to set permission to that file by overriding the permission fp in inode_operations struct (.permission) static int module_permission(struct inode *inode, int op, struct nameidata *foo) { . . . } static struct inode_operations Inode_Ops_4_Our_Proc_File = { .permission = module_permission, /* check for permissions */ }; Our_Proc_File->proc_iops = &Inode_Ops_4_Our_Proc_File; For some reason, when I compile this i get - warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type on the following line: .permission = module_permission, /* check for permissions */ Any idea how to solve this? Thanks!

  • recv receiving not whole data sometime

    - by milo
hi all, i have following issue: here is the chunk of code: void get_all_buf(int sock, std::string & inStr) { int n = 1; char c; char temp[1024*1024]; bzero(temp, sizeof(temp)); n = recv(sock, temp, sizeof(temp), 0); inStr = temp; }; but sometimes recv returning not whole data (data length always less then sizeof(temp)), only it's part. write side always sends me whole data (i got it with sniffer). what matter? thx. P.S. i know, good manner suggests me to check n (if (n < 0) perror ("error while receiving data), but it doesn't matter now - it's not reason of my problem. P.S.2 i've forgot - it's blocking socket.

  • problem in reading output of dd command using pipe

    - by Ummar
I am developing an application, in which I want to redirect the output (progress information) of dd command to my C++ program, but it is not actually getting the output, here is the code FILE * progressInfo = popen("gzip -dc backup/backup.img.gz | pv -ptrbe -i 2 -s 2339876653 | dd of=/dev/sdb","r"); if(!progressInfo) { return -1; } char buf[1024]; while(fgets(buff, sizeof(buff),progressInfo)!=NULL) { std::cout << buff << endl; } but the problem is the progress information is not received in buff, and the output is continuously printed on terminal, and above program halts on while(fgets(buff, sizeof(buff),progressInfo)!=NULL), and as soon as the dd operation is completed, the very next line to loop block is executed. if anyone has any idea why the output is not returned to buff, and its continuously retuned on terminal?

  • Create File Speedily From Individual Column

    - by neversaint
    I have a data that looks like this: -1 1:-0.394668 2:-0.794872 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.9365 6:0.75597 1 1:-0.463641 2:-0.897436 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.44378 6:0.121824 1 1:-0.469432 2:-0.897436 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.32668 6:0.302529 -1 1:-0.241547 2:-0.538462 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.9994 6:0.987166 1 1:-0.757233 2:-0.948718 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:-0.33904 6:0.915401 1 1:-0.167147 2:-0.589744 3:-1 4:-0.871341 5:0.95078 6:0.991566 The first column is class, and next 6 columns are features. I want to create 6 files for individual features. For example feat1_file.txt will contain -1 1:-0.394668 1 1:-0.463641 ... 1 1:-0.757233 1 1:-0.167147 feat2_file.txt will contain -1 2:-0.794872 ... 1 2:-0.589744 and so on. I have a Perl code that does this but it is horribly slow. Is there a way to do it faster? Typically the input files will contain 100K lines. use strict; use Data::Dumper; use Carp; my $input = $ARGV[0] || "myinput.txt"; my $INFILE_file_name = $input; # input file name open ( INFILE, '<', $INFILE_file_name ) or croak "$0 : failed to open input file $INFILE_file_name : $!\n"; my $out1 = $input."_feat_1.txt"; my $out2 = $input."_feat_2.txt"; my $out3 = $input."_feat_3.txt"; my $out4 = $input."_feat_4.txt"; my $out5 = $input."_feat_5.txt"; my $out6 = $input."_feat_6.txt"; unlink($out1); unlink($out2); unlink($out3); unlink($out4); unlink($out5); unlink($out6); print "$out1\n"; while ( <INFILE> ) { chomp; my @els = split(/\s+/,$_); my $lbl = $els[0]; my $OUTFILE1_file_name = $out1; # output file name open ( OUTFILE1, '>>', $OUTFILE1_file_name ) or croak "$0 : failed to open output file $OUTFILE1_file_name : $!\n"; print OUTFILE1 "$lbl $els[1]\n"; close ( OUTFILE1 ); # close output file my $OUTFILE2_file_name = $out2; # output file name open ( OUTFILE2, '>>', $OUTFILE2_file_name ) or croak "$0 : failed to open output file $OUTFILE2_file_name : $!\n"; print OUTFILE2 "$lbl $els[2]\n"; close ( OUTFILE2 ); # close output file # Etc.. until OUTFILE 6 } close (INFILE);

  • Passing enums to functions in C++

    - by rocknroll
Hi all, I have a header file with all the enums listed (#ifndef #define #endif construct has been used to avoid multiple inclusion of the file) that I use in multiple cpp files in my application. One of the enums in the files is enum StatusSubsystem {ENABLED,INCORRECT_FRAME,INVALID_DATA,DISABLED}; There are functions in the application delcared as ShowStatus(const StatusSubsystem&); Earlier in the application when I made calls to the above function like ShowStatus(INCORRECT_FRAME); my application used to compile perfectly. But after some code was added The compilation halts giving the following error: File.cpp:71: error: invalid conversion from `int' to `StatusSubsystem' File.cpp:71: error: initializing argument 1 of `void Class::ShowStatus(const StatusSubsystem&) I checked the code for any conflicting enums in the new code and it looked fine. My Question is what is wrong with the function call that compiler shows as erroneous? For your reference the function definition is: void Class::ShowStatus(const StatusSubsystem& eStatus) { QPalette palette; mStatus=eStatus;//store current Communication status of system if(eStatus==DISABLED) { //select red color for label, if it is to be shown disabled palette.setColor(QPalette::Window,QColor(Qt::red)); mLabel->setText("SYSTEM"); } else if(eStatus==ENABLED) { //select green color for label,if it is to be shown enabled palette.setColor(QPalette::Window,QColor(Qt::green)); mLabel->setText("SYSTEM"); } else if(eStatus==INCORRECT_FRAME) { //select yellow color for label,to show that it is sending incorrect frames palette.setColor(QPalette::Window,QColor(Qt::yellow)); mLabel->setText("SYSTEM(I)"); } //Set the color on the Label mLabel->setPalette(palette); } A strange side effect of this situation is it compiles when I cast all the calls to ShowStatus() as ShowStatus((StatusSubsystem)INCORRECT_FRAME); Though this removes any compilation error, but a strange thing happens. Though I make call to INCORRECT_FRAME above but in function definition it matches with ENABLED. How on earth is that possible? Its like while passing INCORRECT_FRAME by reference, it magically converts to ENABLED, which should be impossible. This is driving me nuts. Can you find any flaw in what I am doing? or is it something else? The application is made using C++,Qt-4.2.1 on RHEL4. Thanks.

  • Getting n-th line of text output

    - by syker
I have a script that generates two lines as output each time. I'm really just interested in the second line. Moreover I'm only interested in the text that appears between a pair of #'s on the second line. Additionally, between the hashes, another delimiter is used: ^A. It would be great if I can also break apart each part of text that is ^A-delimited (Note that ^A is SOH special character and can be typed by using Ctrl-A)

  • gcc compilations (sometimes) result in cpu underload

    - by confusedCoder
I have a larger C++ program which starts out by reading thousands of small text files into memory and storing data in stl containers. This takes about a minute. Periodically, a compilation will exhibit behavior where that initial part of the program will run at about 22-23% CPU load. Once that step is over, it goes back to ~100% CPU. It is more likely to happen with O2 flag turned on but not consistently. It happens even less often with the -p flag which makes it almost impossible to profile. I did capture it once but the gprof output wasn't helpful - everything runs with the same relative speed just at low cpu usage. I am quite certain that this has nothing to do with multiple cores. I do have a quad-core cpu, and most of the code is multi-threaded, but I tested this issue running a single thread. Also, when I run the problematic step in multiple threads, each thread only runs at ~20% CPU. I apologize ahead of time for the vagueness of the question but I have run out of ideas as to how to troubleshoot it further, so any hints might be helpful. UPDATE: Just to make sure it's clear, the problematic part of the code does sometimes (~30-40% of the compilations) run at 100% CPU, so it's hard to buy the (otherwise reasonable) argument that I/O is the bottleneck

  • Bash script to (more or less) reliably check if the internet is up

    - by João Portela
I need a bash script to put in a cron job that every minute checks if the internet is up. This is how I did it: #! /bin/sh host1=google.com host2=wikipedia.org curr_date=`date +"%Y%m%d%H%M"` echo -n "${curr_date};" ((ping -w5 -c3 $host1 || ping -w5 -c3 $host2) > /dev/null 2>&1) && echo "up" || (echo "down" && exit 1) How would you do it? Which hosts would you ping? Thanks in advance.

  • Parsing line with delimiter in Python

    - by neversaint
I have lines of data which I want to parse. The data looks like this: a score=216 expect=1.05e-06 a score=180 expect=0.0394 What I want to do is to have a subroutine that parse them and return 2 values (score and expect) for each line. However this function of mine doesn't seem to work: def scoreEvalFromMaf(mafLines): for word in mafLines[0]: if word.startswith("score="): theScore = word.split('=')[1] theEval = word.split('=')[2] return [theScore, theEval] raise Exception("encountered an alignment without a score") Please advice what's the right way to do it?

  • Question with "extern" in C

    - by why
When programming, I would like to split one large file(which contains main function) to many small files, so there is one common case: functions in small files can modify the var from main file, so i think extern is very useful! for instance: in main.c extern int i = 100; in small.c extern int i; fprintf(stdout, "var from main file: %d\n", i); I just want to know is my understanding right?

  • What is the recommended way to package perl scripts for CPAN (and CorporatePAN)?

    - by szabgab
Recently I looked at a module on CPAN that comes with a script to be installed which made me wonder. What is the recommended way to include a script in a package that should end up on the public CPAN and if there is any different recommendation for packages that would be released on an in-house CPAN server? The script starts like this: #!/usr/bin/perl eval 'exec /usr/bin/perl -S $0 ${1+"$@"}' if 0; # not running under some shell Two questions Do I understand correctly the eval part is unnecessary? That will be embedded by the CPAN client during installation and it will be very different when installing on Windows. What is the recommended sh-bang line? Would that be #!/usr/bin/env perl instead of the above?

  • Ubuntu makes noise and heat when AC charger is inserted

    - by user2263752
I have an issue with heat and noise on my laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 installed. The thing is that when I have the AC charger plugged into the laptop, it automatically goes to "boost mode" or something. And when the laptop is on battery mode, the heat and noise is reduced shortly. I want the laptop to be on battery mode as general and "boost mode" as an option if more power is needed. Any solutions? I have installed tlp that doesn't seen to have any effect.

  • sigprocmask not working

    - by EpsilonVector
I'm using sigprocmask as follows: void mask(){ sigset_t new_set,old_set; sigemptyset(&new_set); sigaddset(&new_set,SIGALRM); sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &new_set, &old_set); } and to my surprise a function which prints a big list somehow gets interrupted by the signal, even though I invoke mask() at its beginning. It looks as if mask fails, since my function doesn't invoke any other functions and therefore nowhere in its run should an unmask() happen. What can cause sigprocmask to fail?

  • Passwordless SSH using cgi-perl script

    - by AV
Hello, This is my first shot at trying out cgi-perl scripts. I have SSH keys set up between my (root user) local machine and a remote machine. I'm trying to run a command on the remote box and display the output on a webpage hosted from my local machine. The script runs fine from command line however, it throws SSH key error when called from the webpage because the user running the script is apache and not root. Is there a way to get around this issue?

  • Socket left in TIME_WAIT after file transfer via netcat

    - by com
Using Copying by NetCat I am trying to copy files throught network by NetCat. From console it work pretty well. First I run listening netcat on the destination machine and after I run sending on source machine. The problem is it's doen't work from script from the source machine: ssh -f user@$desthost 'nc -l 1234 | tar xvf - /dev/null &' #listening on destination host tar cv /tmp/file | nc $desthost 1234 #sending to destination host I saw that after running port 1234 is still was open and status of the socket was TIME_WAIT. If you know what's the problem, please, help me out. And by the way, after copying how can I validate that the content is identical? Thanks! Addendum: I found one very strange thing, the same implementation with screen on destination work works, but not stable, sometimes it doesn't copy a file. ssh user@$desthost screen -dm -S test 'nc -l 1234 | tar xvf - ' #listening on destination host Maybe there is an issue with timeout?

  • MP3 and OGG tags in PHP

    - by Quamis
Except http://us3.php.net/manual/en/book.ktaglib.php and http://getid3.sourceforge.net/ does anyone know of any other way to work from PHP with tags on audio files? I need to read and write them, and KTagLib seems a little too much for the job, and also don't really get the documentation, and getID3 seems to only write ID3v1 tags.
