What causes random clicking/navigation sound while PC is idle?

On my Dell D630 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, I randomly hear the "Windows Navigation Start.wav" played. This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. Change my MX record on my server to google MX?

Hi. I got a windows server 2008 where I host a site, now I decided to have the email on google apps. I did add the MX records I get from them to my DNS settings on the server but with no luck. I recently started doing server stuff so I did like this. Server Manager / Roles / DNS Server / DNS / SERVERNAME / MYDOMAIN / Forward Lookup / New MX Host or child domain: What goes here? FQDN: here is my domain name, i think because I named the ns my domain? FQDN MX: here is the google MX record I got from them MSP: 10 I have no Idea where I go wrong but I thought I would ask you guys if any of you can maybe give me some tips on what to look for or any newbee mistake I do that you see from this little info. I really appreciate all help I could get on this.

Unable to connect to the Report Server

Win/7 Professional SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Reporting Services Configuration Manager When I launch it, shows correct Server Name, but report server instance is blank. When I press FIND I get: "Unable to connect to the Report Server " This is my development workstation, so no IIS installed. Seems to work fine on XP. SSMS works fine - no issues. I tried uninstalling SQL Server completely, rebooting, reinstalling a fresh download. Same result. I've googled every article I can find - nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction in case you've come across this yourself? Thanks.

Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything. How to Recover HDD Formatted by "Create a Recovery Drive" Tool of Windows 8.1?

I have 2 TB USB HDD which had these drives F: about 1 TB with 750 GB data H: about 120 GB with 60 GB data I: about 780 GB with 250 GB data (For TV: It was raw in Windows but visible in the Smart TV) I took 521 MB from last part of H to get new G drive. Then I run "Create a Recovery Drive" tool of Windows 8.1 and chose G drive. It said all data in the drive will be deleted. I thought it is just G drive but it deleted my whole HDD. It created 32 GB new F drive with writing 337 MB on it and rest of HDD is unallocated. I tried these programs to get my first 3 drives but non of them helped for getting 1st partition. Restoring factory image of HP Laptop

I use a HP G62. I am unable to use my recovery disk to restore to factory settings. I had no problems earlier until I created an additional partition which I hear might have changed my hard disk to dynamic. How do I get back to 'normal'? I don't mind formatting the disk. I just want my factory OS back. .............. i get an error message at about 69 percent telling me that the restoration process failed. I'm using the factory image disks i created using the hp recovery manager. I have tried formating the hard drive clean and then restoring woth the cd, it didn't work. I was always able to restore before i created that partition.

BCM 2007 not opening contacts...

Business Contact Manager for Outlook (2007) is refusing to open contacts. This problem appeared this morning on every machine (Windows XP SP3) on our network. The contact list does populate as normal, and contacts can be printed from the context menu, but the form that displays the contact information does not display, and no error message is thrown. I have turned on logging for BCM in the help menu, but nothing is being generated (or, leastways, I cannot find it anywhere). The SQL services appear to have started as normal. Anyone come across this before I take a deep breath and go with my boss' suggestion of "just reboot the server"? Any other information you need? Thanks.

Create mirror software raid with bad blocks hdd. How to check data integrity?

There is error in System event log like this one: "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block." Because of above I created Raid 1 on this disk and other one. I'm using Windows Server 2008 R2 software RAID volumes. Volume in Disk Manager is marked as "Failed Redundancy" and "At Risk". I could command to "Reactivate Disk" and it's starts to re-sync, but after a while it stops and returns to previous state. It stops re-sync on bad block on old disk and creates same error in System event log. Old disk status is Errors, new disk status is Online. How can I check that there is exact copy of the old disk on new one ? It is server machine so I would prefer to keep it running during this check.

How well will ntpd work when the latency is highly variable?

I have an application where we are using some non-standard networking equipment (cannot be changed) that goes into a dormant state between traffic bursts. The network latency is very high for the first packet since it's essentially waking the system, waiting for it to reconnect, and then making the first round-trip. Subsequent messages (provided they are within the next minute or so) are much faster, but still highly-latent. A typical set of pings will look like 2500ms, 900ms, 880ms, 885ms, 900ms, 890ms, etc. Given that NTP uses several round trips before computing the offset, how well can I expect ntpd to work over this kind of link? Will the initially slow first round trip be ignored based on the much different (and faster) following messages to/from the ntp server? Thanks and Regards.

Domain points me to some malicious URL and I can't get rid of it

Whenever I enter my URL into the browser, it keeps pointing me to http://fornax.myvnc.com/dev The URL doesn't even work and my antivirus doesn't complain about it so I am not sure what is happening. I logged into my domain manager at godaddy and it says that the nameservers are pointing to: NS46.DOMAINCONTROL.COM and I am not sure where this came from either because my hosting is with lunarpages whose nameserver is NS1.LUNARMANIA.COM I tried looking into my .htaccess and it is blank. My index.php was hijacked with some malicious code so I removed it completely. Everything is supposed to be normal now but still some kind of a redirection is taking place and am not sure where this is happening. Any suggestions?

Slower than expected 802.11n wireless network speeds

I have two ASUS laptops running Windows 7 connected wirelessly via 802.11n at 150 Mbit, as reported by Task Manager. The router is Netgear WNDR3700. Compiling zip component for PHP 5.2.11 in MAMP PRO

Helo I installed MAMP PRO on my Macbook Pro (10.6) some time ago. Now I would like to use zip functions in php. I found that I must add zip.so to my extension folder and edited php.ini. On my computer I have two different versions of PHP one in MAMP folder and other in user/lib which was pre-installed on my system. Now I wish to compile my zip library for MAMP version. I got zip sources for my version of PHP then in terminal called function /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/phpize so it uses mamp php version ./configure make then I moved compile zip.so to extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613. Quickly open Windows Mobility Center in Windows 8 "tablet" mode

I am using a Surface Pro (2013). I would like to know if there is a quick way to open the Windows Mobility Center desktop program. I like to use this program because it is easy to manipulate during the "tablet" (non-keyboard, no-mouse) mode. This program has multiple ways to be started, according to From How to Open and Use Mobility Center in Windows 7 and Windows 8: (Windows 8) Press Windows key + X and select Mobility Center Open the Control Panel and select "Windows Mobility Center" Open the Run dialog and type "mblctr.exe" and press Enter key. None of these are quick and easy when in "tablet" mode. I would ideally like to swipe from right screen edge into to open the Settings pop up and select one icon that opens the Mobility Center. Alternatively, another way I would like to have implemented would be to touch the Windows icon on the tablet screen outside of the viewing area and touch an "app" to launch the Mobility Center. Alternatively, it would be nice to have a Live Tile App that duplicates this functionality.

Windows 8 - can't drag files from Explorer and drop on applications

In Windows 8 I find I can't drag files to applications like I've been able to do for as long as I can remember. Example: Drag MP3s to Winamp Drag folder full of music to Winamp Drag videos to VLC Drag txt, reg etc files to Notepad I have tried various combinations of: Running Explorer as administrator Running drop target as administrator Taking ownership of drop target application's folder Taking ownership of Explorer Changing user account to administrator Create a new user account Lowering UAC level Disabling UAC in GUI Disabling UAC in registry Running Explorer folders in a separate thread This is the last straw if there's no known proper (ie non hacky compromise) fix for this. "Little" things like this combined are a productivity nightmare and if I have to relearn so much and configure so much to get basic things done with an OS I might as well just move to Linux once and for all.

Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

Reluctant to ask because there is so much here about 'postfix relay access denied' but I cannot find my case: I use php (Zend Framework) to send emails outside my network using the Google mail server because I could not send mail outside my server (user: web). However when I sent out an email via cron (user: root, I believe), still using ZF, using the same mail config/credentials, I get the message: '5.7.1 Relay access denied' I guess I need to know one of two things: 1. How can I use the google smtp server from cron 2. Asus G53SX How to use the recovery partition

I am trying to use the recovery partition on my Asus G53SX laptop, but the instructions in the included booklet don't match up with what happens on the computer. It says press F9 during bootup and then press ENTER to select windows setup. Then select the language you want to recover, and so on. When I press F9 I end up in the boot manager and from there I can access safe mode and all these things. The closest thing I can find in this list is "Repair your computer" but this menu takes me to recovery points and backup images, none which are mentioned in the booklet. How can I use the recovery partition to restore my laptop to factory state?

Booting off windows image through network

I have a HP st5742, which is a tower that does not have a hard drive and I am trying to boot it off the network, preferably off an image. It was designed along with the program HP Image Manager, however this program has been discontinued by HP and I can not seem to find a way to get a copy. If this helps, I am running my network with windows server 2008 R2 and would like the streaming client to be running windows. I have spent days searching for a way to deploy this machine however I can not seem to find a straight forward program, guide, or way to do this. I am new to this sort of thing but I willing to reading into the subject, all I need is a point in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Effect of NonBlockingSendSpecialBuffering setting on Windows

Recently I ran into some issue related to the UDP sending on Windows. When the application tries to send the packets over UDP in non-blocking mode, often it received socket error 10035 (WSAEWOULDBLOCK) in the send(), so likely that the socket buffer is full. I only seen this issue on Windows 2008 and did not see the same problem on Windows 2003. I was doing some research and found the following article (although it mention TCP) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823764 At the bottom it mentioned updating of the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\NonBlockingSendSpecialBuffering to 1 But it didn't include further details Would anyone know what is the effect of setting this registry value and what does it do? I tried to research on the web but unable to find any reference, including the msdn website. Any help would be appreciated.

In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http://server:8085 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache http://server:90 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM http://server:8081 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http://apache.server or http://apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http://fdm.server or http://fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http://jdownloader.server or http://jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how? Even if it's possible only for Internet, I would like to know how to do it, if there's a way.

Does anyone provide a Skype connection service?

Is there a way of offering Skype access to incoming calls while keeping all telephony traffic over our chosen business telephony provision? Is there a 3rd party who can route incoming Skype calls to our telephone system? The business has had requests from contacts wanting to call us via Skype, but we want to keep all telephony via our PBX and phone lines as our geographic location limits our available internet bandwidth. We also prevent installation of non-standard applications on desktops and do not want to add Skype to our build. I was wondering if there were any 3rd parties that provide a connection service that would allow our contacts to call via Skype and us receive the calls via our phone system.

Determining who is running with administrator rights?

I work at a small non-profit organization with about 55 desktop PCs running Windows XP Pro. The domain controller is running Windows Server 2003. I have a two-part question (note that I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to network administration). Part 1: Is there some simple way that I can determine which accounts are logged in with administrator rights? Part 2: Is there a way that I can remove administrator rights from users without sitting down at each individual machine? Thanks for considering my questions.
