• Correct Interactive Website System Design Concepts / Methods?

  Hi all, I hope this question isn't too open ended, but a nudge in the right direction is all I need! I am currently building an online accounting system - the idea is that users can register, log in, and then create customers, generate invoices and other documents and eventually print / email those documents out. I am a Java programmer but unfortunately haven't had too much experience in web projects and their design concepts... This is what I have got thus far - A Tomcat web server which loads Spring. Spring handles my DAO's and required classes for the business logic. Tomcat serves JSP's containing the pages which make up the website. To make it interactive I have used JavaScript in the pages (jQuery and its AJAX calls) to send and receive JSON data (this is done by posting to a page which calls a handleAction() method in one of my classes). My question is, am I tackling this project in the right way? Am I using the right tools and methods? I understand there are literally countless ways of tackling any project but I would really love to get feedback with regards to tried and tested methods, general practices etc. Thanks in advance! • Using MSBuild 4 command line to publish ASP.NET web application

  In previous msbuild we used the target '_CopyWebApplication' in order to build and convert the source of a project into a published site, this worked OK, but wasn't ideal. In .NET 4, the publishing process is somewhat more sophisticated and additionally seems a bit of a black box to understand. Whilst packages look great, I cannot fully understand how they can be harnessed by a build server, the build server would not get any manifest information, and equally, something (msbuild?) is CREATING this manifest information FROM the project file. In our build server, I ideally want to say, here is my csproj file, deploy it by the package configuration 'x'. I'm trying to understand the workflow I need to make this happen. Right now when I use _CopyWebApplication, the result is different to doing a publish from visual studio 2010, primarily that web.config transforms aren't processed, and obviously msdeploy isn't involved at all. Can somebody point me in the right direction, I believe I need to get msbuild to do the equiv of 'Build Deployment Package', and then use msdeploy to deploy this from our build server to our CI testing environments. I know this is a very vague post, but I hope somebody can give me some hints, I'll be continuing research also, so if I make any progress, I'll post my findings here. Thanks in advance, Stephen.

  I'm trying to read up on asp.net mvc, I have never used asp.net before but are familiar with regular c# development. Freshly installed, fully patched Windows XP Home. Freshly installed updated to SP1 Visual Studio 2008 Pro. Started a new project, selected "ASP.NET MVC Web Application", target framework is 3.5 I hit F5 and I get: "Could not load file or assembly System.EnterpriseServices" Exact wording in swedish: [FileNotFoundException: Det går inte att hitta filen. (Undantag från HRESULT: 0x80070002)] [FileNotFoundException: Det går inte att läsa in filen eller sammansättningen System.EnterpriseServices, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a eller ett av dess beroenden. Det går inte att hitta filen.] Adding a reference to System.EnterpriseServices in my project did not work. A quick google suggested I copy this file Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/System.EnterpriseServices.dll into %WINDOWS%/assembly but that did not work either. Any suggestions? Found the answer, I added it to the GAC with gacutil. C:\WINDOWS"C:\Program\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin\gacutil.exe" /i Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/System.EnterpriseServices.dll

• Writing fortran robust and "modern" code

  In some scientific environments, you often cannot go without FORTRAN as most of the developers only know that idiom, and there is lot of legacy code and related experience. And frankly, there are not many other cross-platform options for high performance programming ( C++ would do the task, but the syntax, zero-starting arrays, and pointers are too much for most engineers ;-) ). I'm a C++ guy but I'm stuck with some F90 projects. So, let's assume a new project must use FORTRAN (F90), but I want to build the most modern software architecture out of it. while being compatible with most "recent" compilers (intel ifort, but also including sun/HP/IBM own compilers) So I'm thinking of imposing: global variable forbidden, no gotos, no jump labels, "implicit none", etc. "object-oriented programming" (modules with datatypes + related subroutines) modular/reusable functions, well documented, reusable libraries assertions/preconditions/invariants (implemented using preprocessor statements) unit tests for all (most) subroutines and "objects" an intense "debug mode" (#ifdef DEBUG) with more checks and all possible Intel compiler checks possible (array bounds, subroutine interfaces, etc.) uniform and enforced legible coding style, using code processing tools C stubs/wrappers for libpthread, libDL (and eventually GPU kernels, etc.) C/C++ implementation of utility functions (strings, file operations, sockets, memory alloc/dealloc reference counting for debug mode, etc.) ( This may all seem "evident" modern programming assumptions, but in a legacy fortran world, most of these are big changes in the typical programmer workflow ) The goal with all that is to have trustworthy, maintainable and modular code. Whereas, in typical fortran, modularity is often not a primary goal, and code is trustworthy only if the original developer was very clever, and the code was not changed since then ! (i'm a bit joking here, but not much) I searched around for references about object-oriented fortran, programming-by-contract (assertions/preconditions/etc.), and found only ugly and outdated documents, syntaxes and papers done by people with no large-scale project involvement, and dead projects. Any good URL, advice, reference paper/books on the subject?

  I have a functioning jquery accordion using pure unordered lists. I'm trying to incorporate 2 pieces of functionality. • Xcode - duplicate Target - new Target fails to build

  Hi all, using Xcode 3.2.5 on 10.6.6 (10J521) I have an Xcode project containing 1 Target: "MyApp". It builds and runs successfully. As well as source and resource files, the Target contains a "Copy Files" build phase which copies "Sparkle.framework" in. The framework is in the same directory as the project. I want to duplicate this Target. Steps taken: Did "Clean all Targets". Right-clicked on the "MyApp" Target within Xcode, and then chose "Duplicate". Renamed the duplicated target to "MyAppTarget2". Selected "MyAppTarget2" as the Active Target from the popup menu in the top-left. Did "Build". The problem: error: Sparkle/Sparkle.h: No such file or directory This is puzzling! Each Build step appears to have been replicated in the duplicated Target, including the "Copy Files" phase. The Sparkle.framework exists at the path indicated by [Get Info on the Copy Phase item]. If I right-click on the Sparkle.framework file within the "Copy Files" build phase of the duplicated Target, and select "Reveal in Finder", then the correct Sparkle.framework file is shown. The required file exists at Sparkle.framework/Headers/Sparkle.h If I switch back to the original "MyApp" target, it builds and runs successfully. Am I doing something obviously wrong here? Thanks.

• CorePlot linker errors after upgrading iOS SDK

  This seems like it's happened before but somehow ended up working itself out. It's happened again and I can't seem to get this fixed. I use the CorePlot Cocoa Touch framework. Everything was fine until I upgraded to the new 4.3 beta. Now my project won't compile, and is giving me linker errors for unknown symbols having to do with CorePlot. I've become a pro at adding the framework to my project, and I've checked and rechecked the instructions trying to do it again. Is there a button I can click or anything to just make this work again? I've used these instructions to try to re-add the framework, to no avail EDIT: By the way, this compiles just fine for simulator and runs graphs no problem. The code: from django.test import TestCase class Note(TestCase): def test_noteshow(self): response = self.client.get('/note/') self.assertEqual(response.status_code, 200) self.assertTemplateUsed(response, '/note/noteshow.html') The problem is that my project include an auth mod, it will force the unlogin user redirecting into the login.html page when they visit the noteshow.html. So, when I run my unittest, in the bash it raise an failure that the response.status_code is always 302 instead of 200. All right though through this result I can check the auth mod is running well, it is not like what I want it to be.   Hi there, Does anybody know how to (easily) "rename" an existing grails application? I'm running into this because my PaaS provider does not allow me to delete a subscription... So I want to deploy my application under a different name. Of course, I can do this manually, but I think it might be a useful 'top-level' script (i.e. "grails rename-app newappname") Manual hints: When I do a "grails create-app myappname" I can see the myappname exists in the following files (and filenames)... Of course this is done by the create-app script, which replaces @...@ tokens in the template. • Where to put a textfile I want to use in eclipse?

  hi there, I need to read a text file when I start my program. I'm using eclipse and started a new java project. In my project folder I got the "src" folder and the standard "JRE System Library"... I just don't know where to put the text file. I cannot use a "hard coded" path because the text file needs to be included with my app... I also tried to create a new folder like "Files" and use the pathe "Files/staedteliste.txt".. doesn't work too... • Something preventing default (explorer-style) CListCtrl jump to line behaviour

  I'm maintaining an MFC/COM/ATL 45-odd project solution originally written with VS6. I'm now using VS2008. I'm looking at a list control(vanilla CListCtrl) which doesn't behave as we think it should. Normally in an MFC list control you can press a key, (Q say) & selection will jump down to the 1st line beginning with 'Q' (like windows explorer). Does anyone have an idea as to why this might not happen? The styles/Extended styles are set the same as another control in the same project, which DOES work OK. Do I have to send my own message, or is there a flag, etc. that controls that functionality or what? Normally Google would supply the answer, but I haven't been able to frame my query correctly to come up with the relevant info this time. Here's the line from the .rc file for the CListCtrl that doesn't jump to a line on keypress: CONTROL "List1",IDC_BAL_LIST,"SysListView32",LVS_REPORT | LVS_SHOWSELALWAYS | WS_BORDER | WS_TABSTOP,0,73,493,230 And here's a line from the same .rc file showing a list control that does do that: CONTROL "List1",IDC_LIST1,"SysListView32",LVS_REPORT | LVS_SHOWSELALWAYS | WS_BORDER | WS_TABSTOP,1,38,501,219 As you can see, there's no obvious difference to the properties, so what program code would affect it?

  I create an Enterprise Application CustomerApp that also generated two projects CustomerApp-ejb and CustomerApp-war. In the CustomerApp-ejb, I create a SessionBean call CustomerSessionBean.java as below. package com.customerapp.ejb; import javax.ejb.Stateless; import javax.ejb.LocalBean; import javax.persistence.EntityManager; import javax.persistence.PersistenceContext; @Stateless @LocalBean public class CustomerSessionBean { @PersistenceContext(unitName = "CustomerApp-ejbPU") private EntityManager em; public void persist(Object object) { em.persist(object); } } Now I can deploy CustomerApp-war just fine. But as soon as I create a Message Driven Bean, I cant deploy CustomerApp-war anymore. When I create NotificationBean.java (message driven bean), In the project destination option, I click add, and have NotificationQueue for the Destination Name and Destination Type is Queue. Below are the code package com.customerapp.mdb; import javax.ejb.ActivationConfigProperty; import javax.ejb.MessageDriven; import javax.jms.Message; import javax.jms.MessageListener; @MessageDriven(mappedName = "jms/NotificationQueue", activationConfig = { @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "acknowledgeMode", propertyValue = "Auto-acknowledge"), @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "destinationType", propertyValue = "javax.jms.Queue") }) public class NotificationBean implements MessageListener { public NotificationBean() { } public void onMessage(Message message) { } } If I remove the @MessageDriven annotation, then I can deploy the project. • Split large repo into multiple subrepos and preserve history (Mercurial)

  We have a large base of code that contains several shared projects, solution files, etc in one directory in SVN. We're migrating to Mercurial. I would like to take this opportunity to reorganize our code into several repositories to make cloning for branching have less overhead. I've already successfully converted our repo from SVN to Mercurial while preserving history. My question: how do I break all the different projects into separate repositories while preserving their history? Here is an example of what our single repository (OurPlatform) currently looks like: /OurPlatform ---- Core ---- Core.Tests ---- Database ---- Database.Tests ---- CMS ---- CMS.Tests ---- Product1.Domain ---- Product1.Stresstester ---- Product1.Web ---- Product1.Web.Tests ---- Product2.Domain ---- Product2.Stresstester ---- Product2.Web ---- Product2.Web.Tests ==== Product1.sln ==== Product2.sln All of those are folders containing VS Projects except for the solution files. Product1.sln and Product2.sln both reference all of the other projects. Ideally, I'd like to take each of those folders, and turn them into separate Hg repos, and also add new repos for each project (they would act as parent repos). Then, If someone was going to work on Product1, they would clone the Product1 repo, which contained Product1.sln and subrepo references to ReferenceAssemblies, Core, Core.Tests, Database, Database.Tests, CMS, and CMS.Tests. So, it's easy to do this by just hg init'ing in the project directories. But can it be done while preserving history? Or is there a better way to arrange this?

• How can I setup ANT with Subversion and ColdFusion Builder (eclipse) to check out a local build to w

  I am not sure if there's an answer for this already -- couldn't find one for this (hopefully common) setup: I recently converted one of my ColdFusion projects to deploy via ANT. I have a local ant script that instructs a remote server to check out the code, and run the application's specific build file, remotely on the server. I have a few endpoints: Live - production (on the production server) Staging - on the production server, different datasource, etc. dev - on the local box. What I have run into it seems is a simple and common problem. I now need ANT to create any build, even locally. Fine, created a local endpoint and it configures for my box. Issue? How do I get it to show up as a project (automatically if possible) in Eclipse/ColdFusion builder. What I envision is instead of checking out a branch via the subversion plugin in CFBuilder/Eclipse, I now use ANT to do that for me. Since I use ColdFusion Builder (Eclipse + Adobe's plugin), I have all of eclipse's tools and plugins available to solve the problem of : how can I best call ANT from within Eclipse/ColdFusion Builder, to setup the local build as a project that I can develop and work on? I think when I check the code back in from the local box, I'd have to be sure not to check in any files with local config paths, etc. I hope this is a detailed and clear enough explanation, if not, please ask. • PHP Hashtable array optimisation.

  I made a PHP app which was taking about ~0.0070sec for execution. Now, I added a hashtable array with about 2000 values. Suddenly the time for execution has gone up to ~0.0700 secs. Almost 10 times the previous value. I tried commenting out the part where I was searching inside the hashtable array (but array was still left defined). Still, the execution time remains about ~0.0500secs. Array is something like: $subjectinfo = array( 'TPT753' => 'Industrial Training', 'TPT801' => 'High Polymeric Engineering', 'TPT802' => 'Corrosion Engineering', 'TPT803' => 'Decorative ,Industrial And High Performance Coatings', 'TPT851' => 'Project'); Is there any way to optimize this part? I cannot use Database as I am running this app on Google app engine which is still not supporting JDO database for php.   Hi all, I have a very strange problem that I cannot fix and don't know what's going on... I am using VS 2010 Premium and .NET 4.0. Here are my steps to simulate the problem. Step 1. Create a new VB class library project named "MyClassLib" Step 2. Create a new class named "MyTestingClass". Public Class MyTestingClass Inherits System.ComponentModel.Design.CollectionEditor Public Sub New() MyBase.New(GetType(List(Of String))) End Sub End Class Step 3. Add two .net reference. "System.Design" and "System.Drawing". Step 4. Create a new VB console application named "MyClassExe" Step 5. Add "MyClassLib" reference to "MyClassExe". Step 6. Open Module1.vb in "MyClassExe" project Step 7. In the Main method, type Dim a = New MyClassLib.MyTestingClass() Step 8. Try to compile "MyClassLib". It doesn't have problem. Step 9. Try to compile "MyClassExe". It cannot compile because the WHOLE MyClassLib cannot be found!!! I have no idea what's going on? Moreover, the same case happens in C#. Does anyone know what's the problem with "System.Design"? Thank!!!

• How to create database records for a financial year

  Hello, I need to create entities (specifically contracts) in a database table that are associated with a financial year. These contracts will be applied to projects. Any contract variation will be recorded by creating a new contract record for the same financial year but the original will remain associated with the project as a history. The projects can last several years and so at any one time a project will have a live contract record for each year as well as any number of historic contracts for that year. All of which is incidental but I'm trying to provide some context. If the contracts where for the year - it would be easy and I'd just store the Year either as a date field with the 1st of January or just an Integer. However the contracts run for financial years and I don't know how to approach this. I don't want a separate table containing the financial years as I don't want the users to have to maintain this. I don't want to store the financial year as a string "2009/2010" as this is not ideal for sorting/extracting the data. Any ideas will be helpful, my best so far is to have starting and ending year in 2 columns and just "KNOW" that starting is April of the year etc Thanks

• Visual Studio 2008 / ASP.NET 3.5 / C# -- issues with intellisense, references, and builds

  Hey all, Hoping you can help me -- the strangest thing seems to have happened with my VS install. System config: Windows 7 Pro x64, Visual Studio 2008 SP1, C#, ASP.NET 3.5. I have two web site projects in a solution. I am referencing NUnit / NHibernate (did this by right-clicking on the project and selecting "Add Reference". I've done this for several projects in the past). Things were working fine but recently stopped working and I can't figure out why. Intellisense completely disappears for any files in my App_Code directory, and none of the references are recognized (they are recognized by any file in the root directory of the web site project. Additionally, pretty simple commands like the following (in Page_Load) fail (assume TextBox1 is definitely an element on the page): if (Page.IsPostBack) { str test1; test1 = TextBox1.Text; } It says that all the page elements are null or that it can't access them. At first I thought it was me, but due to the combination of issues, it seems to be Visual Studio itself. I've tried clearing the temp directories & rebuilding the solution. I've also tried tools -- options -- text editor settings to ensure intellisense is turned on. I'd appreciate any help you can give! Thanks, Sean

• Publishing artifacts with sources on archiva

  At work I'm dipping my toes in managing project dependencies with maven. We use Apache Archiva (1.2.1) as a local repository and proxy. I'm adding artifact for open source project, that is not published on any public repository. I've learned that to publish the sources I should use the Classifier field on Upload artifact page. The sources are then listed alongside the jar and pom when I browse the repository. But when I update my maven dependencies I get only the jar and pom from the repository. I noticed that sources are also missing when the archiva proxies for me the downloads from other public repositories. I didn't find any configuration options in Archiva's admin pages to serve the sources... What am I missing? Update: I was missing the fact that artifact sources have to be downloaded manually. I.e. the maven client has to request them, which is controlled by command line option -DdownloadSources=true. Maven Integration for Eclipse has a preference setting to always download them as described in Resolving artifact sources. Archiva then serves the sources for local artifacts or proxies the request to remote repositories and caches the sources for future requests.

• Why won't VS2010 RC use my existing types when I add a service reference?

  I have a huge problem getting services references in VS2010 RC to use existing assemblies. Even though I have a class library with all the data contracts (classes marked with DataContract and properties with DataMember) that is shared between the service project and the consuming project (which is a class library), when I add a service reference, the data contracts are regenerated withing the service reference instead of using the existing types. When I was using VS2010 beta 2, this worked fine, and I have existing service references using the very same data contracts. But if I add a new service reference, or even update an old one, it won't use the existing types anymore. I have made a mini-test-solution, with one service, one data contract type and one console app as a consumer (all in the same solution), and there it seems to work, but that's no great comfort to me. Is there any way to see why it can't use the existing types? Edit to clearify. It works to generate the proxy classes with svcutil.exe, and point to the data contracts dll, like this: svcutil.exe http://localhost/MyService.svc /reference:[Path To DataContracts]\DataContracts.dll /n:*,MyProject.MyServiceReference /ct:System.Collections.Generic.List`1 The question is, what possible reason could there be for Visual Studio to generate its own datacontracts instead of using the existing ones even though the "reuse" checkbox is checked and the datacontracts assembly is referenced.

• VS2008 - Find and Replace - Searches too many files.

  I've used VS2008 a lot and have never had this problem. However, I started a new job and am using a new machine. Ever since I've gotten here the VS Find feature has been acting funny. I first noticed it when I did a replace all for "All Open Files". The project wouldn't build because the values had actually been replaced in other files within the solution that were not open and didn't even open after I pressed replace all. I have found that I can never use replace all on this machine because I never know what it is going to do. Even if I just do a find on "Current Document", once it's done with the document and I should get that message that says "No more matches found" it actually OPENS another random file from my solution where there is a match and keeps on going. It seems to never make any difference what "Look in" option I've chosen. My coworker has an install off the same disk and claims to not be experiencing this. We're in the middle of a stressful, huge project with a close deadline so I know my boss won't let me do a reinstall. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Anyone know a fix?? Thanks, Pam

• Ivy failed to resolve dependency : What to check, what to do ?

  Hi everyone, I'm using Ivy to resolve dependency in my very small project. It's the first time I'm doing that and it's more to learn as my project is very small. I had a problem 5 minutes ago, when trying to download log4j. • Creating a scm browser for an RCP application.

  I have an RCP app that saves its project as an xml file and currently the user just selections a directory to save that file and then uses the open file dialog to open the project. We are thinking about enhancing it to allow users to check in/out from a source code manager. This will make it easier for users to share their projects with each others with all the benefits of a scm. I need something similar to Subclipses, but i was thinking of using the maven svn plugin so that it is more flexible which on which scm is used. It would probably better to keep it simple because most users won't have a clue what a scm is. An ideal would be just having a Checkout menu option which opens a dialog similar to the Open File dialog. I was wondering if anyone had an example of how to use the maven scm. What calls to make to set the scm location and to get the file? Or if there is a better way of going about this. Thanks!
