  I was having some very frustrating behaviour on our build server and while I found a number of articles online with similar error messages none of them helped me.  I thought I would just explain this here incase if helps me or anyone else in future.The error message we were getting is:There was no endpoint listening at http://localhostStubs.ExternalApplication/SampleService.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more detailsOur scenario is as follows:We have a solution where a WCF service application hosting the WCF routing service is listening to the Windows Azure Service Bus Relay.  We have an acceptance test project in the solution which sends a message to the service bus which is then received by the WCF routing service and routed to SampleService.svc which is hosted in another IIS application on the same box.  A response is flowed back through to the test.  In the tests there are 5 scenarios simulating a successful message, and various error conditions.  On my developer machine it was working absolutely fine every time, and a clean build on my developer machine worked fine.  On the build server however one or more of the tests would fail each time with the above error message.  There didnt seem to be any pattern to which test would fail.The solution was building on a Windows 2008 R2 machine with IIS 7 and AppFabric Server installed with auto-start configured for the IIS Application which would be listening to service bus.After lots of searching online and looking at logs etc it turned out to be a simple solution to just restart the WAS service (Windows Process Activation Service) and the services it advised you to restart with it.  Hope this helps someone else

• XAF DSL Tool Needs a new Team Lead

  I have enjoyed my time on this project and have used it in several production projects.  However, with the enhancements in Visual Studio 2010 and the Entity Framework, the DSL tool doesn’t make sense for me to support at this time.  With that said, I am looking for someone who has interest to continue the project if they so desire.  I have moved my attention to creating a new project at Entity Framework Extensions for XAF.  We are converting the current DSL tool into the Entity Framework extensions.  The same code generation and everything else work.  However, the visual design surface is so much easier to work with.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Also, please take a moment to look at the new project.  This is where all my effort going forward will be focused. Thanks again for all the support on my vision this far and enjoy.

• Sharing an Apache configuration between testing vs. production

  I have a personal web site with a slightly nontrivial Apache configuration. I test changes on my personal machine before uploading them to the server. The path to the files on disk and the root URL of the site are of course different between the test and production conditions, and they occur many places in the configuration (especially <Directory blocks for special locations which have scripts or no directory listing or ...). What is the best way to share the common elements of the configuration, to make sure that my production environment matches my test environment as closely as possible? What I've thought of is to use SetEnv to store the paths for the current machine in environment variables, then Include a common configuration file with ${} everywhere there's something machine specific. Any hazards of this method?

This got us wondering, how fast is your current Internet connection? Photo by roland When it comes to the speed of our Internet connection, we all want the maximum possible. The FCC recently announced their National Broadband Plan, which is an initiative to improve the Internet infrastructure in the United States and provide higher speeds to everyone. You’ve also undoubtedly heard the news about Google getting into the mix with their program to bring ultra high-speed fiber broadband to 50,000 users in select cities. While we wait for those programs to come into fruition, we thought it would be cool to check out what kinds of speeds you’re getting now. Test Your Internet Connection Speed There are several sites out there you can use to test your Internet speeds, but probably the best site is Speedtest.net. It’s easy to use, and allows you test download and upload speeds to and from various locations in the US and throughout the world. If you already know the speeds you’re getting leave a comment and let us know. If you use Speedtest.com, just keep in mind that our comment system won’t allow you to copy their result links, but you can simply tell us what you get in the results. • Windows Server 2008, IIS7 and Windows Authentication

  We currently have a development server set up which we are trying to test some Windows authentication ASP.NET code on. We have turned on Windows Authentication in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 fine, and it asks the user for a username and password as excepted, but the problem is it doesn't appear to accept any credentials. This code for example... Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Page.Title = "Home page for " + User.Identity.Name End Sub ...always returns an empty string. One theory we have is that we dont have Active Directory installed as of yet, we are just testing this by logging on via the machine name not a domain. Is this type of authentication only applicatable to domains (if so we can probably install Active Directory and some test accounts) - or is it possible to get the user identity when logging in using the machine name? Ideally we would like to be able to test this on our local machines (Windows 7 Pro) using our own accounts (again these aren't on a domain) and IIS but this has the same issue as our dev server. • How to deal with static utility classes when designing for testability

  We are trying to design our system to be testable and in most parts developed using TDD. Currently we are trying to solve the following problem: In various places it is necessary for us to use static helper methods like ImageIO and URLEncoder (both standard Java API) and various other libraries that consist mostly of static methods (like the Apache Commons libraries). But it is extremely difficult to test those methods that use such static helper classes. I have several ideas for solving this problem: Use a mock framework that can mock static classes (like PowerMock). This may be the simplest solution but somehow feels like giving up. Create instantiable wrapper classes around all those static utilities so they can be injected into the classes that use them. This sounds like a relatively clean solution but I fear we'll end up creating an awful lot of those wrapper classes. Extract every call to these static helper classes into a function that can be overridden and test a subclass of the class I actually want to test. But I keep thinking that this just has to be a problem that many people have to face when doing TDD - so there must already be solutions for this problem. What is the best strategy to keep classes that use these static helpers testable?

• How to prevent recursive windows when connecting to vncserver on localhost

  I have a VNCServer (vino) configured on my Ubuntu 8.10 box. I would like to connect to this server from a vncclient running on this same machine (the reason for doing this strange thing is mentioned below). Understandably, when I connect to a vncserver on the same box, my vncclient shows recursive windows. Is there a way I can connect to the vncserver on the same machine and not have the recursive windows problem? Perhaps if I could start the vncserver on one display and the client on another display then will it work? How can I do something like this? Note - Reason for running vnc client and server on the same machine: When I start our Java Swing unit test suite, a bunch of swing UI's are created and destroyed as the tests run. These windows fly in the foreground making it impossible to work while the test suite is running. I am hoping to start the test suite within a vncclient so that I can continue working while the tests run.

• Can't login to just installed view administrator

  Hi, we are starting to test View for our purposes. I have created new test enviroment, new vdidemo active directory, new virtual center etc... I just installed view connection server component to new server and trying to do initial configuration, but when trying to log in I get following error " Error accessing the View Administrator. Contact the system administrator" Log file says following error 08:14:08,925 INFO LoginBean User administrator has failed to authenticate to View Administrator What is causing this problem? How can I log in and start to test VDI?

• A WPF Image Button

  Instead of a normal button with words, sometimes you want a button that is just graphical. Yes, you can put an Image control in the Content of a normal Button control, but you still have the button outline, and trying to change the style can be rather difficult. Instead I like creating a user control that simulates a button, but just accepts an image. Figure 1 shows an example of three of these custom user controls to represent minimize, maximize and close buttons for a borderless window. Notice the highlighted image button has a gray rectangle around it. You will learn how to highlight using the VisualStateManager in this blog post.Figure 1: Creating a custom user control for things like image buttons gives you complete control over the look and feel.I would suggest you read my previous blog post on creating a custom Button user control as that is a good primer for what I am going to expand upon in this blog post. That is all that is needed to display the buttons shown in Figure 1. The definition for this user control is in a DLL named PDSA.WPF. The Style definitions for both the Border and the Image controls are contained in a resource dictionary names PDSAButtonStyles.xaml. Using a resource dictionary allows you to create a few different resource dictionaries, each with a different theme for the buttons.The Visual State ManagerTo display the highlight around the button as your mouse moves over the control, you will need to add a Visual State Manager group. Two different states are needed; MouseEnter and MouseLeave. In the MouseEnter you create a ColorAnimation to modify the BorderBrush color of the Border control. You specify the color to animate as “DarkGray”. You set the duration to less than a second. The TargetName of this storyboard is the name of the Border control “borMain” and since we are specifying a single color, you need to set the TargetProperty to “BorderBrush.Color”. You do not need any storyboard for the MouseLeave state. Drag and drop the button onto a Window or User Control in your application. I have not referenced the PDSAButtonStyles.xaml file within the control itself so you do need to add a reference to this resource dictionary somewhere in your application such as in the App.xaml.<Application.Resources>  <ResourceDictionary>    <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>      <ResourceDictionary         Source="/PDSA.WPF;component/PDSAButtonStyles.xaml" />    </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>  </ResourceDictionary></Application.Resources>This will give your buttons a default look and feel unless you override that dictionary on a specific Window or User Control or on an individual button. After you have given a global style to your application and you drag your image button onto a window, the following will appear in your XAML window.<my:PDSAucButtonImage ... />There will be some other attributes set on the above XAML, but you simply need to set the x:Name, the ToolTip and ImageUri properties. You will also want to respond to the Click event procedure in order to associate an action with clicking on this button. In the sample code you download for this blog post you will find the declaration of the Minimize button to be the following:<my:PDSAucButtonImage       x:Name="btnMinimize"       Click="btnMinimize_Click"       ToolTip="Minimize Application"       ImageUri="/PDSA.WPF;component/Images/Minus.png" />The ImageUri property is a dependency property in the PDSAucButtonImage user control. The x:Name and the ToolTip we get for free. You have to create the Click event procedure yourself. With just a little bit of code to respond to the MouseLeftButtonDown event on the border you can raise your own Click event. Dependency properties, such as ImageUri, allow you to set attributes on your custom user control. • Getting Ramped for Silverlight 4

  Here is a quick walk through of setting up your Silverlight 4 development environment.  The first assumed step is that you have Visual Studio 2010 already installed and any appropriate patches.  Then download the following in order and install each. Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio and Silverlight 4 RTW Expression Blend 4 Release Candidate Silverlight Toolkit - Not necessary, but lots of good bits in this download. WCF RIA Services - This is also not necessary, but you should grab it just in case anyway. Once each of these are installed jump into Visual Studio 2010.  Start a new Silverlight 4 Project by going to File -> New -> Project -> and select the Silverlight Project Templates.  Here you'll see a new list of projects that are specific to the above listed downloads. Silverlight Business Application WCF RIA Service Class Library Silverlight Unit Test Application One way to confirm (and what I am going to display here in this entry) Silverlight 4 is installed ok is to select the Silverlight Application Template and start a new project. On the next screen you will see some of the standard options.  I always go with the ASP.NET MVC Option and with these new installations I am going to select Silverlight 4 (should be selected already) from the drop down and check the Enable WCF RIA Services check box. I also, for good measure, always create a unit test project for the ASP.NET MVC Project that will host the Silverlight Application Project.  When all is setup, the Solutions Explorer should look like what is shown below. Add the following code to the XAML of the MainPage.xaml of the Silverlight Project. <UserControl x:Class="Silverlight4.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400">   <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <TextBlock x:Name="textBlockTest" Text="Hello World!" /> </Grid> </UserControl> Now execute the project, if all runs well you have installed Silverlight 4 successfully. • droid cam makefile understanding and error

  I tried installing the droid cam on my fedora 19 (64 bit) . Link to the droid cam application is here and whenever I try to install it , the Makefile which is as follows is invoked obj-m := v4l2loopback-dc.o all: make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` test: gcc test.c -o test clean: make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` clean insmod: sudo insmod v4l2loopback-dc.ko width=320 height=240 rmmod: sudo rmmod v4l2loopback-dc.ko and here is the error -- INSTALL: Webcam parameters: '320' and '240' -- INSTALL: Building v4l2loopback-dc.ko make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` make: *** /lib/modules/3.9.5-301.fc19.x86_64/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [all] Error 2 -- INSTALL: v4l2loopback-dc.ko not built.. Failure build happens to be a symbolic link.I was wondering what exactly is the makefile trying to and why is it failing?

• Problem with running php script using mysql on tomcat

  I am using tomcat 6 with JavaBridge. I have stored my php script in the following location. C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\project\test.php In test.php I am using curl and mysql. The php.ini in JavaBridge is stored in the following location C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi\php.ini and its contents are - extension_dir="C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi\x86-windows\ext" include_path="C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\pear;." there is also a config file called mysql.ini whose contents are - extension = php_mysql.dll I had also installed wamp earlier so I copied all the dll's from C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext to C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\WEB-INF\cgi\x86-windows\ext When I start tomcat and run my script I get the following error - Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\project\test.php on line 534 Please help.
