  • Setting many key/value pairs

    - by Andrew
Hi, I'm working on a rake task which imports from a JSON feed into an ActiveRecord called Person. Person has quite a few attributes and rather than write lines of code for setting each attribute I'm trying different methods. The closest I've got is shown below. This works nicely as far as outputing to screen but when I check the values have actually been set on the ActiveRecord itself it's always nil. So it looks like I can't use .to_sym to solve my problem? Any suggestions? I should also mention that I'm just starting out with Ruby, have been doing quite a bit of Objective-c and now need to embrace the Interwebs :) http = Net::HTTP.new(url.host, url.port) http.read_timeout = 30 json = http.get(url.to_s).body parsed = JSON.parse(json) if parsed.has_key? 'code' updatePerson = Person.find_or_initialize_by_code(parsed['code']) puts updatePerson.code parsed.each do |key, value| puts "#{key} is #{value}" symkey = key.to_sym updatePerson[:symkey] = value.to_s updatePerson.save puts "#{key}....." # shows the current key puts updatePerson[:symkey] # shows the correct value puts updatePerson.first_name # a sample key, it's returning nil end

  • "'Objects' may not respond to 'functions'" warnings.

    - by Andrew
Hello all, for the last couple of weeks I've finally gotten into Obj-C from regular C and have started my first app. I've watched tutorials and read through a book along with a lot of webpages, but I know I've only just begun. Anyway, for most of the night and this morning, I've been trying to get this code to work, and now that it will compile, I have a few warnings. I've searched and found similar problems with solutions, but still no dice. What I'm trying to do is put an array made from a txt document into the popup list in a combo box. AwesomeBoxList.h: #import <Cocoa/Cocoa.h> @interface AwesomeBoxList : NSObject { IBOutlet NSComboBox *ComboBoz; } -(NSArray *) getStringzFromTxtz; - (void) awesomeBoxList; @end AwesomeBoxList.m: #import "AwesomeBoxList.h" @implementation AwesomeBoxList -(NSArray *)getStringzFromTxtz { ... return combind; } - (void) awesomeBoxList { [ComboBoz setUsesDataSource:YES]; [ComboBoz setDataSource: [ComboBoz getStringzFromTxtz]: //'NSComboBox' may not respond to 'getStringzFromTxtz' [ComboBoz comboBox:(NSComboBox *)ComboBoz objectValueForItemAtIndex: [ComboBoz numberOfItemsInComboBox:(NSComboBox *)ComboBoz]]]; /*'NSComboBox' may not respond to '-numberOfItemsInComboBox:' 'NSComboBox' may not respond to '-comboBox:objectValueForItemAtIndex:' 'NSComboBox' may not respond to '-setDataSource:' */ } @end So, with all of these errors and my still shallow knowledge of Obj-C, I must be making some sort of n00b mistake. Thanks for the help.

  • How can I unshorten a URL using python?

    - by Andrew
I want to be able to take a shortened or non-shortened URL and return its un-shortened form. How can I make a python program to do this? Additional Clarification: Case 1: shortened -- unshortened Case 2: unshortened -- unshortened e.g. bit.ly/silly in the input array should be google.com in the output array e.g. google.com in the input array should be google.com in the output array Thanks for the help!

  • Bash: Continue script if only one instance is running.

    - by Andrew
Hello, now this is embarrassing. I'm writing quick script and I can't figure out why this statement don't work. if [ $(pidof -x test.sh | wc -w) -eq 1 ]; then echo Passed; fi I also tried using back-ticks instead of $() but it still wouldn't work. Can you see what is wrong with it? pidof -x test.sh | wc -w returns 1 if I run it inside of script, so I don't see any reason why basically if [ 1 -eq 1 ] wouldn't pass. Thanks a lot!

  • MYSQL Inserting rows that reference main rows.

    - by Andrew M
I'm transferring my access logs into a database. I've got two tables: urlRequests id : int(10) host : varchar(100) path: varchar(300) unique index (host, path) urlAccesses id : int(10) request : int(10) <-- reference to urlRequests row ip : int(4) query : varchar(300) time : timestamp I need to insert a row into urlAccesses for every page load, but first a row in urlRequests has to exist with the requested host and path so that urlAccesses's row can reference it. I know I can do it this way: A. check if a row exists in urlRequests B. insert a row in urlRequests if it needs it C. insert a row into urlAccesses with the urlRequests's row id referenced That's three queries for every page load if the urlRequests row doesn't exist. I'm very new to MySQL, so I'm guessing that there's a way to go about this that would be faster and use less queries.

    - by Andrew
I have a very dynamic / ajax powered website which also includes iframes and due this reason I have a very bad SEO rank and it come in my mind to make one more additional version of the site (text based / no script) and serve it to the search engines based on the user agent . I don't want to loose any fancy ajax feature but I also need to keep the website on the google map :) thank you in advance for any answer ! btw the website is developed in asp.net c# .

  • Logging a certain event only once in ruby

    - by Andrew Grimm
Are there any logging frameworks in ruby that allow you to log a specific event type only once? logger = IdealLogger.new logger.log(:happy_path, "We reached the happy path") # => logs this message logger.log(:happy_path, "We reached the happy path yet again") # => Doesn't log this logger.log(:sad_path, "We've encountered a sad path!") # => logs this message Also, is there a term for the concept of logging a certain event type only once?

  • Do I have to call release on an objective-c retain class variable when setting it to a new object?

    - by Andrew Arrow
Say I have: @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *foo; in some class. And I call: myclass.foo = [NSString stringWithString:@"string1"]; myclass.foo = [NSString stringWithString:@"string2"]; Should I have called [myclass.foo release] before setting it to "string2" to avoid a memory leak? Or the fact that nothing is pointing to the first "string1" object anymore is good enough? And in the dealloc method [foo release] will be called.

  • How do you remove functionality from a program in ruby?

    - by Andrew Grimm
You have some code you want to remove associated with an obsolete piece of functionality from a ruby project. How do ensure that you get rid of all of the code? Some guidelines that usually help in refactoring ruby apply, but there are added challenges because having code that isn't being called by anything won't break any unit tests.

  • Breakpoint pointing out "objc_autoreleaseNoPool"

    - by Andrew
So I'm debugging an app in preperation for its app so release, and I enabled a universal breakpoint for "All Exceptions". Since then, everytime I run the app, the console prints: Catchpoint 2 (throw)Pending breakpoint 1 - "objc_exception_throw" resolved objc[11765]: Object 0x8f18ff0 of class __NSCFLocale autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug objc[11765]: Object 0x8f190a0 of class __NSCFNumber autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug objc[11765]: Object 0x8f1fef0 of class __NSCFLocale autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug Literally printed 3 times. I have no idea what this means but it looks bad. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • OpenGL 3.3 different colours with fragment shader [solved]

    - by Andrew Seymour
    I'm an OpenGL newbie. I'm trying to colour 3 circles but only 3 white circles are appearing. n is 3 in this example. Each vertice has 5 points, 2 for position and 3 for color Here is where I think a problem may lie: glEnableVertexAttribArray(0); glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, vertexbuffer); glVertexAttribPointer( 0, 2, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 5*sizeof(float), (void*)0 ); glEnableVertexAttribArray(1); glVertexAttribPointer( 1, 3, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 5*sizeof(float), (void*)(2*sizeof(float)) ); glDrawElements(GL_TRIANGLES, 20 * 3 * n, GL_UNSIGNED_INT, 0); glDisableVertexAttribArray(0); glDisableVertexAttribArray(1); My shaders: #version 330 core in vec3 Color; out vec4 outColor; void main() { outColor = vec4(Color, 1.0); } #version 330 core layout(location = 0) in vec2 position; layout(location = 1) in vec3 color out vec3 Color void main(){ gl_Position = vec4(position, 0.0, 1.0); Color = color; } Thanks for taking a look Andy EDIT: layout(location = 1) in vec3 color out vec3 Color layout(location = 1) in vec3 color; out vec3 Color;

  • How can I dynamically load and execute all of the Javascript files in a directory?

    - by Andrew
I'm making a very simple content-management system in Javascript. It uses plugins which are individual .js files which live in a "modules" folder. Currently I'm loading them with JQuery's getScript() function, but I have to manually define the list of available modules. Is there any way to dynamically load the list of Javascript files so that the user can install additional modules by simply dropping them into the "modules" folder?

  • Does SQL Server have any kind of magic undo feature?

    - by Andrew G. Johnson
Long story short is I tried to quickly update a single row in SQL Server using the Management studio and just typed UPDATE table SET column='value' and forgot the WHERE other_column='other_value' portion. Went for lunch, came back and theres 15 unread emails waiting for me. Happened about an hour ago, waiting for the database guy to come back to see when the last backup was. There's no magic UNDO feature though is there?

  • Can Grails exceptionHandler support the following Error Handling Flow

    - by Andrew
In my rails app that I am porting to grails whenever an unexpected error occurs I intercept the error automatically and display a form to the user informing them that an error has occured and asking them for further information. Meanwhile, as the form is rendered I write the stack trace and other information about who was logged in to a database table. Then if the form is submitted I add that information to the error report. I cannot tell from the exceptionHandler documentation and BootStrap examples whether that will allow me to grab all the information including various session and request parameters and then stuff them into a database and then post a form. Any thoughts?

  • Changing printer preferences in Windows programmatically

    - by Andrew Alexander
I've written a script that installs several printers for a new user. I want to change the settings on some of these so that they can print on both sides of the page. I BELIEVE this involves modifying an attribute with printui, however it might need VB script or possibly another .NET language (I'd either use VB, C# or IronPython). I can add a comment to a given printer, but how do I select preferences and modify them? Pseudocode would look like this: printui.exe /n printername /??? [how to change quality desired] OR calls to the relevant Windows API.

  • What is the most efficient way to delete all selected items in a ListViewItem collection

    - by Andrew
My user is able to select multiple items in a ListView collection that is configured to show details (that is, a list of rows). What I want to do is add a Delete button that will delete all of the selected items from the ListViewItem collection associated with the ListView. The collection of selected items is available in ListView.SelectedItems, but ListView.Items doesn't appear to have a single method that lets me delete the entire range. I have to iterate through the range and delete them one by one, which will potentially modify a collection I'm iterating over. Any hints? Edit: What I'm basically after is the opposite of AddRange().

  • Android App - XML or java

    - by Andrew Cochrane
Hello - I am currently starting to create an app for a small charity company. But Im not entirely sure how to properly learn how to code for the Android OS. I have searched online for tutorials but most stop at the same stage and only show you how to launch the "helloWorld" app. My question is this: 1) Will using solely XML be sufficient to code an app? Does it require working in partnership with java? 2) Does anyone know of any books, recommended books of course, that break everything down for you step-by-step? Cheers

  • Why is my web page left-aligned on iPad?

    - by Andrew
I recently built a site and centered it using margin: 0 auto. I also wrapped elements in a .wrapper class with a width set to 960px and then had the parent element extend across the whole browser. When I view the Brands screen on an iPad though, the site is left-aligned and does not extend across the whole window. Any thoughts to why this might be happening, and how to correct it? See below for a screenshot:

  • BlackBerry responseXML is null

    - by Andrew
I'm trying to port a portion of AJAX code I wrote over to the BlackBerry application's embedded browser. Our base build is 4.6.1 and the RIM documentation claims that XMLHttpRequest's responseXML is available starting with this version. And when I request an XML file from my local server, I get back the responseText (so I know the request is working), but the responseXML is always null. I've made sure the HTTP "Content-Type" header is set to "text/xml" and I am getting the correct data loaded in a web browser. It's just nulling out in the BB web environment. Does anyone know what might be happening? A backup of using the responseText and piping it through DOMParser is not possible because that object was not added to the BB browser until 4.7.1. So I'm not sure what fallback I have.

  • Python - removing double quotation marks " so that script runs

    - by andrew k
I am using Python scripts to edit the table of many shape files. The following script runs fine, but if there are any " marks in the SIT_FULL_S field, the script errors and shuts down. gp.CalculateField_management(fc + "\\Parcels.shp","SIT_FULL_S", "!SIT_FULL_S!.lstrip('0')", "PYTHON") arcgisscripting.ExecuteError: ERROR 000539: Error running expression: "9030 W SR 2 HWY "A"".lstrip('0') <type 'exceptions.SyntaxError'>: invalid syntax (<string>, line 1) Failed to execute (CalculateField). I have two options, create a new script that runs through and deletes all occurances of ", and then run the above script or modify the above script to ignore the " and contiue running. Can anyone help ?

  • asp.net, wcf authentication and caching

    - by andrew
I need to place my app business logic into a WCF service. The service shouldn't be dependent on ASP.NET and there is a lot of data regarding the authenticated user which is frequently used in the business logic hence it's supposed to be cached (probably using a distributed cache). As for authentication - I'm going to use two level authentication: Front-End - forms authentication back-end (WCF Service) - message username authentication. For both authentications the same custom membership provider is supposed to be used. To cache the authenticated user data, I'm going to implement two service methods: 1) Authenticate - will retrieve the needed data and place it into the cache(where username will be used as a key) 2) SignOut - will remove the data from the cache Question 1. Is correct to perform authentication that way (in two places) ? Question 2. Is this caching strategy worth using or should I look at using aspnet compatible service and asp.net session ? Maybe, these questions are too general. But, anyway I'd like to get any suggestions or recommendations. Any Idea

  • Common Utility for Exception Searching

    - by Andrew
    I wrote this little helper method to search the exception chain for a particular exception (either equals or super class). However, this seems like a solution to a common problem, so was thinking it must already exist somewhere, possibly in a library I have already imported. So, any ideas on if/where this might exist? boolean exceptionSearch(Exception base, Class<?> search) { Throwable e = base; do { if (search.isAssignableFrom(e.getClass())) { return true; } } while ((e = e.getCause()) != null); return false; }

  • Selecting Element followed by text with Selenium WebDriver

    - by Andrew
I am using Selenium WebDriver and the Python bindings to automate some monotonous WordPress tasks, and it has been pretty straightforward up until this point. I am trying to select a checkbox, but the only way that I can identify it is by the text following it. Here is the relevant portion of HTML: <li id="product_cat-52"> <label class="selectit"> <input value="52" type="checkbox" name="tax_input[product_cat][]" id="in-product_cat-52"> polishpottery </label> </li> The only information that I have in my script to identify this checkbox is the string "polishpottery". Is there any way to select that checkbox knowing only the text that follows?
