• Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Can't connect to computer via SBS2011 RWA

  I've got an SBS 2011 Essentials server. Users a able to log on to Remote Web Access using their username and password. However, the trouble starts when a users attempts to log on remotely to his/her computer from the Remote Web Access website. When the user clicks on his/her computer (in the RWA website), the user is first presented with a window listing Publisher, Type, Remote Computer name and Gateway Server. Everything seems fine here, and the user clicks Connect. The user credentials are provided, and a connection is attempted. However, the logon attempt always fails with the message "The logon attempt failed". The logon attempt always generates three log events in the server log: EventId: 4672 - Special Logon EventId: 4624 - Logon EventId: 4634 - Logoff All events happens have the same timestamp. No events are logged on the client machine which the user attempts to log on to. Others have solved this by going to their IIS server and enable "Windows Authentication" for Rpc and RpcWithCert (in Default Web Site). However, this is in place on the server. I've also got RD CAPs and RD RAPs in place. As a side note; if i try to connect to any of the machines using the Remote Desktop Connection using the "Connect from anywhere" functionality - then things work flawlessly! In other words, the error only occurs when attempting to login to a computer via the Remote Web Access website. I've run out of ideas for how I can solve this (too many hours spent). Any ideas highly appreciated!

• Setting up a network e-mail server

  Hello, My boss just asked me to buy a new server for our office network. I know next to nothing about servers and networking, so I need someone to point me in the right direction. He said he wants this to be our e-mail server with a network login. I have no idea how to set up an e-mail server, especially one that sends/receives e-mail using our domain name. We use a terrible piece of order/inventory software called Mail Order Manager (MOM). Our computers currently connect to the MOM database through a networked drive. My boss would like to move away from this peer-to-peer MOM setup. The software publisher offers a SQL version of MOM, but it's way overpriced. Is there a better way to connect to these databases without using the SQL version? Finally, the server needs to be running Windows. Does this question make sense, is it possible, and can someone help me get started? Thanks!

• Can't install Visual Studio 2010 SP1 from an .ISO file I downloaded. Error inside

Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. [OK] I'm running Windows 7 (64bit) Ultimate and have installed this service pack before (2 days ago) on another machine with similar specs and the same exact OS software. I've tried mounting the .ISO file to a virtual drive and installing from there and I get that error. I've tried mounting the .ISO and copy pasting the files to a local folder on my drive and then running the setup.exe application, and I get that error. I don't know how to proceed but can provide any additional information you require from me. What can I do to fix this? Edit If I right click Setup.exe and Run As Administrator, I get the following error: [Window Title] C:\Users\Sergio\Desktop\Things\Setup.exe [Content] Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\Sergio\Desktop\Things\Setup.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. [OK] I've already tried re downloading the ISO from the site, but a quick check of the bytes of the file assures me that the ISO on my drive is 100% correctly downloaded. I get the same amount of bytes in size from the downloading ISO (as Opera reports).

• SQL Server 2008 R2 transactional replication over VPN

  I'm having difficulty setting up replication over a VPN. I have a SQL Server 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition database on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. SQL Server is running on a non-standard port. I have set it up so that it is acting as its own distributor and have configured a publisher on this server. It is set as an updatable transational publication (yes, this is necessary). On this server, I have Routing and Remote Access enabled in order to be able to establish VPN connections. It is configured with a static IP address pool, of which the first in the range is always assigned to the server. I have assigned a test user a static address within this range (I don't know if this is necessary or not). All clients will be 2008 R2 versions, but could be SQL Express or standalone developer instances of the full product. I can establish a VPN connection from the client without problems and can see that the correct IP addresses are allocated. After connecting to the database to test that I can establish a connection, I realised that I needed to be able to connect to the database using the server name rather than an IP address - required for replication - which wouldn't work initially. I created an entry in the hosts file for the server on the client using the NETBIOS name of the server, and now I can connect to the server, from the client, using the SERVER\INSTANCE, PORT syntax, over the VPN. As it is the default instance on the server, I can also connect with simply SERVER, PORT syntax. After all that, I still get the following dreaded error: SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'SERVER\INSTANCE'. (Replication.Utilities). What have I missed? How do I get this to work? TIA

• SQL 2008 Replication corrupt data problem

  We took a SQL 2000 database. Took a lightspeed backup. Restored on SQL 2008 active/passive cluster. Then setup replication to replicate the data back to SQL 2000. So 2008 is the publisher/distributor, and 2000 is doing a pull subscription. Everything works well, execpt we occassionally get corrupt data in varchar/text fields on the subscriber. So for example we have a table with 4500 records. When we run this statement: update MedstaffProvider set Notes = 'Cell Phone: 360.123.4567 Answering Service: 360.123.9876' where LastName = 'smith' The record in the 2008 database is updated as expected. But in the subsriber datbase we'll get gibberish in the notes field: óPÌ[1] T $Oé[1] ð²ñ. K Here's what we know: This is repeatable, meaning we can run that same query all day long and get the same gibberish. If you alter update statement slightly the data gets replicated just fine. The collation on both databases is the same. So far we've only detected the problem with text/varchar fields. (The notes field above is text). Only one or two records in a table are impacted. The table structure looks identical in both 2000/2008. We haven't made any changes. We have found one solution that fixes the problem. Basically if we recreate the table in 2008 (say as MedStaffProvider2) and then insert all the data. Drop the original table. Rename the table to it's original name. Setup replication again. And run the exact same update statement it works as expected. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening here? Or are there any other techniques we can use to troubleshoot this? I've found a solution for this, but would really like to undertsand why this is happening.

  I own a Sony Reader PRS-600 ebook reader. I bought a ton of Manning Publications ebooks (DRM-free) recently. Many of the books are PDFs since not all the ones I wanted are available in epub format. The problem: Some of the PDF books I purchased have incorrect or missing metadata. Making things worse, the Sony Reader only displays the "Title" from the PDF metadata when displaying book titles in the reader's collection of books! The Reader doesn't display the filename. So, even though I have a PDF informatively named "Windows PowerShell In Action.pdf", it shows up as "untitled" in the Reader. Imagine how useful the Reader's list of book titles becomes when many are just "untitled" or "unnamed document" ! Yes, it is maddening. So – short of expecting the publisher to fix the files or Sony to add a filename-based list instead, I'm looking for a way to fix the PDF metadata. I can view the metadata with Adobe Reader, but it doesn't permit modification of the properties. Leading to: Question: Is there a tool – free, or cheap – and either for PC or Mac, that can modify the properties / metadata of a DRM-free PDF document? I want to correct "Title" and "Author" fields, specifically.

• GlassFish v3: Security related updates?

  I've used GlassFish v3.0 as my main development application server for a few weeks now. Now that I want to install it on my VPS, I'd like to get the latest security updates, because Glassfish v3 Release 3.0 (Open Source Edition or not) is already a few months old, and v3.1 is only available as "early access" nightlies (see https://glassfish.dev.java.net/public/downloadsindex.html). GlassFish offers an update mechanism (via pkg or updateTool), but when I simply try to get the latest updates (pkg image-update), it finds nothing. However, when I change the preferred publisher to dev.glassfish.org, I get a list with lots of updates. The interesting thing is, that I haven't been able to find any description about the exact meaning of the diverse publishers/repositories (release, stable, contrib and dev) anywhere on the web, most importantly answering the question: Am I supposed to use the "dev" repository for security updates, or is it (probably more likely) for unstable updates? Where do I get security updates from then? Or are there simply no security updates yet? Asking on the GlassFish forum resulted in 56 views, but 0 answers.

• Merging cuesheet chapter halves into single track for an audiobook

  I have an audiobook that I have ripped and I need some help constructing chapters. I have already made some cue sheets TITLE "Bookname" PERFORMER "the Author" FILE "File1.FLAC" wave ; 23971906.667 milliseconds TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "_Intro" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "CH 01" INDEX 01 24:15:50 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "CH 02" INDEX 01 66:21:00 TRACK 04 AUDIO TITLE "CH 03" INDEX 01 87:05:00 The audio book is in two files. The chapter at the end of the first file is continued in the second file. However, the second file restates: The publisher Book Title List item Blah blah blah I would like to merge the two 'halves' of the chapter in one seamless track. The only way I can think to do this would be be: Bulk cut down the tracks. Drop the junk info into junk track Continue the track listings as normal Take the two "halves" of the target chapter and build a separate cue sheet for it. I know there has to be an easier way. I am ok with making the 'junk' info a 'gap' or something. These are are FLAC files that will be converted to MP3 for my phone and other potable devices. I have read the primers on cue sheets, but I am just not getting it.

• Determine wifi capabilities of Windows box (with WSUS install rules)

  I need to determine if a computer is in fact a laptop with wifi capabilities (with emphasis on wifi rather than laptop). More precisely, I want to distribute a piece of software I wrote via WSUS and Local Update Publisher to those clients. To this end, I want to create appropriate "Package installable rules", that is simple rule used bay the Windows Update Service on the client to decide beforehand whether or not an update/installation package is applicable. Typically, such "installabel rules" are logical combinations of rules of type "File exists", "Registry Key exists", "WMI Query", "MSI Product Installed", so I'd prefer one of those methods. The method I hope someone here can help me find should work with Win 7/Vista, preferably also with XP. My guess is that WMI query is the way to go, but I have little experience in that. I have found that one can e.g. query for EnclosureType and that might detect a laptop. However, I would be much happier if an actually available wifi interface would be detected. Does anyone have an idea how to approach this? If there is anything you need me to clarify, don't hesitate to comment.

• Certificates required for WHQL-certified drivers

  The 64-bit Windows 7 image that we deploy to machines at our site does not contain all of the certificates included on a default Windows image. Automatic root certificate installation is also disabled per policy from higher in the organization. We have had a lot of trouble installing many WHQL-certified drivers from reputable companies (ex. HP, Lexmark, Dell, etc.), and I hypothesize that a required certificate is missing from one of the certificate stores on the machine. The error we typically get is: The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner. I know that it is signed. A .CAT file is included, and it has the following tree from top to bottom: Microsoft Root Authority (thumbprint a4 34 89 15 9a 52 0f 0d 93 d0 32 cc af 37 e7 fe 20 a8 b4 19) Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility PCA (thumbprint 93 b8 d8 82 0a 32 db 20 a5 ea b6 8d 86 ad 67 8e fa 14 ea 41) Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher (thumprint b0 50 45 45 42 4e be 2c 16 2f 62 5b bf 5a e6 9b 96 bf 0b 0b) What certificates are required to install WHQL-certified drivers? • How do I push my initial snapshot to a subscriber server in SQL Server 2000?

  I'm configuring Transactional Replication using the Push model. The scenario is: The SQL Servers: SQL01 (publisher) and SQL02 (subscriber) - both running SQL 2000 SP4. Both servers are standalone (i.e. not domain members) Both servers have their FQDN and NETBIOS names in their HOSTS files I've managed to configure SQL01 to publish my database and configured a Push subscription for SQL02 using the Push New Subscription wizard and set the Distribution Agent to update the subscription continuously. On the Push Subscription wizard "Initialise Subscription" page I've selected "Yes, initialise the schema and data" and ticked the "Start the Snapshot Agent to begin the initialisation process immediately" option. All the required services are running (SQL Agent). When I complete the wizard and browse the Replication - Publications folder I can see my publication (blue book with arrow). The publication shows the Push subscription and its status is Pending. If I look in the c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Mssql\Repldata folder I see a number of T-SQL scripts for each table e.g. Products.bcp, Products.sch, Products.idx. What should happen now? Should my replicated database now (magically) appear on the subscription server?

• Lenovo System Update Breaks Windows Live

  Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain (and fingers from typing) trying to solve this issue to no avail. I have a Lenovo computer and I install their system update tool to install all my missing drivers. However after this tool is installed Windows Live 2011 breaks, it will no longer sign in giving error number 8e5e0247 all the solutions online haven't helped. It appears that a language setting somewhere gets set to en_ms, and I'm en_ca. My computer is running Windows 7 x64. When i try to sign onto messenger it gives an error that (with some research) means your locale or language is not supported, I've searched my computer for any reference to en_ms but find none. Also a few other things seem to have broken, When a UAC box comes up it is no longer able to identify the publisher of anything, and also the indexing service does not work (I'm not sure if the indexing issue is related, but the UAC issue happened right after installation), I had this issue before but I don't remember how I fixed it, I believe it had something to do with environmental variables. When it goes to sign in it gets as far as the "Loading contacts" then stops and goes back to the sign in screen. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

• SQL 2008 R2 replication error: The process could not connect to Distributor

  I have two servers running SQL 2008 R2 Standard, each with an instance named "MAIN". I have a small test database on my primary server (one table, 13 rows) that I want to replicate to a second server as a proof-of-concept for some larger databases that I want to replicate. I set up the primary server to be a publisher and distributor, and set the database to do transactional replication. I copied the data to the second server via a backup/restore, not via a snapshot (which I'll have to do with the larger databases due to database size and limited bandwidth). I followed the instructions here: http://gnawgnu.blogspot.com/2009/11/sql-2008-transactional-replication-and.html Now on the subscriber, I go under Replication / Local Subscriptions / Right click / Properties on my subscription to the DB. The status of the last synchronization shows a status of: "The process could not connect to Distributor 'PRIMARYSERVER\MAIN'." Data IS replicating from the primary to the secondary. Any record I add on the primary shows up on the secondary server within seconds. Is the Distributor part of the Snapshot system that I'm not using, or is it part of the transaction replication stuff?   I recently purchased an Intel D2700 MUD motherboard and I cannot find drivers for the Win7 x64 integrated graphics (Intel GMA 3650 aka PowerVR sgs545). The accompanying CD contains Win7 x32 version only. When I run it I got an error: This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. I tried to use online utility Intel Driver Update Utility Graphics. I used Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer without success. First, UAC prompt appear, and then endlessly spinning progress-bar with text "Analyzing computer...". The text in UAC prompt is: Program file name: System Requirements Lab Verified publisher: Husdawg, LLC I downloaded this utility (intel_srldetect_4.5.5.0) and started it from my hard disk. I got an error: A network error occured while attempting to read from the file: C:\Users\Loom\Downloads\SystemRequirementsLab_intel_4.5.5.0.msi Standard VGA driver works for this video card but without hardware acceleration: Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on. Where I can get appropriate driver?

• MDI WinForm application and duplicate child form memory leak

  This is a WinForm MDI application problem (.net framework 3.0). It will be described in C#. Sorry it is a bit long because I try to make things as clear as possible. I have a MDI application. At some point I find that one MDI child form is never released. There is a menu that creates the MDI child form and show it. When the MDI child form is closed, it is supposed to be destroyed and the memory taken by it should be given back to .net. But to my surprise, this is not true. All the MDI child form instances are kept in memory. This is obviously a "memory leak". Well, it is not a real leak in .net. It is just that I think the closed form should be dead but somehow there is at least one unknown reference from outside world that still connect with the closed form. I read some articles on the Web. Some says that when the MDI child form is closing, I should unwire all the event handlers, otherwise some event handlers may keep my form alive. Some says that DataBindings should be cleaned before the form is closing otherwise the DataBindings will add references to some global Hashtable and thus keep my form alive. My form contains quite a lot things. Many event handlers and many DataBindings and many BindingSources and few suspected controls containing user control and HelpProvider. I create a big method that unwires all the event handlers from all the relevant controls, clear all the DataBindings and DataSources. The HelpProvider and user controls are disposed carefully. At the end, I find that, I don't have to clear DataBindings and DataSources. Event handlers are definitely causing the problem. And MDI form structure also contributes to something. During my experiments, I find that, if you create a MDI child form, even if you close it, there will still be one instance in the memory. The reference is from PropertyStore of the main form. This means, unless the main form is closed (application ends), there will always be one instance of MDI child form in the memory. The good news is that, no matter how many times you open and close the child form, there will be only one instance, not a big "leak". When it comes to event handlers, things become more tricky. I have to address that, all the event handlers on my form are anonymous event handlers. Here is an example code: //On MDI child form's design code... Button btnSave = new Button(); btnSave.Click += new System.EventHandler(btnSave_Click); Where btnSave_Click is also a method in MDI child form. The above is always the case for various controls and various types of event. To me, this is a bi-directional circular reference. btnSave keeps a reference of MDI child form via the event handler. MDI child form keeps a reference of btnSave instance. To me again, such bi-directional circular reference should not cause any problem for .net's garbage collector. This means that I do not have to explicitly unwire the event when the form is being disposed: btnSave.Click -= btnSave_Click; But the truth is not so. For some event handlers, they are safe. Ignoring them do not cause any duplicate instance. For some other event handlers, they will cause one instance remaining in the memory (similar effect as the MDI form structure, but this time caused by the hanging event handlers). For some other event handlers, they will cause every instance opened in the memory. I am totally confused about the differences between these three types of event handlers. The controls are created in the same way and the event is attached in the same way. What is the difference? (Don't tell me it is the event handle methods that make difference.) Anyone has experience of this wired scenario and has an answer for me? Thanks a lot. So now, for safety issue, I will have to unwire all the event handlers when the form is being disposed. That will be a long list of similar code for each control. Is there a general way of removing events from controls in recursive way using reflection? What about performance issue? That's the end of my story and I am still in the middle of my problem. For any help, I thank you.

  I already have Visual Studio 2008 installed. When installing developer Sql Server 2008, do I need to check the Business Intelligence Development Studio option? I'm guessing not. I assume if I already have VS 2008, the install will just add the relevant Sql Server related project types into VS 2008. EDIT: I marked the question answered before I did the install - I've installed Sql Server before and I thought this was what happened, but on doing this install, leaving the BI studio option unchecked does NOT install the SQL Server projects in Visual Studio. I had to go back and install it, so the answer is... Check it! I was overthinking the install - it's smart enough not to install VS twice.

I prepared all my dimension tables and my fact table, primary keys etc. The source is a 'flat' (item level) table and my problem is now how to split it up and get it from one into the respective tables. What I am struggling to figure out at moment is the best way to handle a “failback” situation once a failover has occurred. I use Visual Studio +BIDS and TFS for my IDE and source control. I am about to take on multiple projects with an offshore vendor and I am worried about managing change. My major concern is manging merges and changes between me and the offshore team. Merging and managing changes to SQL & XML for just one person is bad enough but with multiple developers it seems like a nightmare. Any thoughts on how best to structure development knowing that sometimes there is no way to avoid multiple individuals making changes to the same file?

• ETL mechanisms for MySQL to SQL Server over WAN

  I’m looking for some feedback on mechanisms to batch data from MySQL Community Server 5.1.32 with an external host down to an internal SQL Server 05 Enterprise machine over VPN. The external box accumulates data throughout business hours (about 100Mb per day), which then needs to be transferred internationally across a WAN connection to an internal corporate environment before some BI work is performed. This should just be change-sets making their way down each night. I’m interested in thoughts on the ETL mechanisms people have successfully used in similar scenarios before. SSIS seems like a potential candidate; can anyone comment on the suitability for this scenario? Alternatively, other thoughts on how to do this in a cost-conscious way would be most appreciated. • valueOf() vs. toString() in Javascript

  In Javascript every object has a valueOf() and toString() method. I would have thought that the toString() method got invoked whenever a string conversion is called for, but apparently it is trumped by valueOf(). For example, the code var x = {toString: function() {return "foo"; }, valueOf: function() {return 42; }}; window.console.log ("x="+x); window.console.log ("x="+x.toString()); will print x=42 x=foo This strikes me as backwards .. if x were a complex number, for example, I would want valueOf() to give me its magnitude (so that zero would become special), but whenever I wanted to convert to a string I would want something like "a+bi". And I wouldn't want to have to call toString() explicitly in contexts that implied a string. Is this just the way it is?

  Hello, I was attempting to do a sed replacement in a binary file however I am beginning to believe that is not possible. Essentially what I wanted to do was similar to the following: sed -bi "s/\(\xFF\xD8[[:xdigit:]]\{1,\}\xFF\xD9\)/\1/" file.jpg Or more notably... scan through a binary file until the hex code FFD8, continue reading until FFD9, and only save what was between them (discards the junk before and after, but saves FFD8 and FFD9 as part of the file still) Is there a good way to do this? Even if not using sed?
