• iOS - Application logging test and production code

  I am doing a bunch of logging when I'm testing my application which is useful for getting information about variable state and such. However I have read that you should use logging sparsely in production code (because it can potentially slow down your application). But my question is now: if my app is in production and people are using it, whenever a crash (god forbid) occurs, how will I be able to interpret the crash information if I have removed the logging statements? Then I suppose I will only have a stacktrace for me to interpret? Does this mean I should leave logging in production code only WHERE it's really essential for me to interpret what has happened? Also how will the logging statements relate to the crash reports? Will they be combined? I'm thinking of using Flurry as analytics and crash reports...

• How to search array for duplicates using a single array?

• Mapping over multiple Seq in Scala

  Suppose I have val foo : Seq[Double] = ... val bar : Seq[Double] = ... and I wish to produce a seq where the baz(i) = foo(i) + bar(i). One way I can think of to do this is val baz : Seq[Double] = (foo.toList zip bar.toList) map ((f: Double, b : Double) => f+b) However, this feels both ugly and inefficient -- I have to convert both seqs to lists (which explodes with lazy lists), create this temporary list of tuples, only to map over it and let it be GCed. Maybe streams solve the lazy problem, but in any case, this feels like unnecessarily ugly. In lisp, the map function would map over multiple sequences. I would write (mapcar (lambda (f b) (+ f b)) foo bar) And no temporary lists would get created anywhere. Is there a map-over-multiple-lists function in Scala, or is zip combined with destructuring really the 'right' way to do this?

• Construct A Polygon Out of Union of Many Polygons

  Supposed that I have many polygons, what is the best algorithm to construct a polygon--maybe with holes- out of the union of all those polygons? For my purpose, you can imagine each piece of a polygon as a jigsaw puzzle piece, when you complete them you will get a nice picture. But the catch is that a small portion <5% of the jigsaw is missing, and you are still require to form a picture as complete as possible; that's the polygon-- maybe with holes-- that I want to form. My naive approach is to take two polygons, union them, and take another polygon, union it with the union of the two polygons, and repeat this process until every single piece is union. Then I will run through the union polygon list and check whether there are still some polygons can be combined, and I will repeat this process until a satisfactory result is achieved. But this seems to be like an extremely naive approach. I just wonder is there any other better algorithm?

• Indexed key vs indexed separate columns, which one is faster ?

  In MYSQL, from a pure performance perspective, if I have a table with large amount of data with 10/1 read/write ratio. is it faster in read/write performance to have 4 search criteria in separate columns and all indexed or have them combined in to one single string acting as a key and store in one indexed column ? e.g. say this table with 5 columns, first name, last name, sex, country and file where the first four columns will ALWAYS be given as a part of search parameters in a search or have a table with two columns, key and file. where the value of key can be john-smith-male-australia ?? I don't quite get the pros and cons. the point I try to stress is the fact that all parameters will be given.in a search.

  Hello, I have more than one Excel Workbooks containing multiple worksheets in each of them. I would like to have a macro which help me to create (combine the information from) all the worksheets into one pipe [|] delimited [.csv] file. These sheets should be combined/appended into the [.csv] file, in the same order these worksbooks appear in a folder and in the order sheets appear in these workbooks. The macro should ask for a delimiter/separator specific to me and the input and output path based on my selection. So first I am wondering can I merge those into one SP? I am not sure how it works with this OPENXML but I would think it would just be making sure that the XPath is right. Next what happens while it would be running this combined SP and something goes wrong. Would it roll back all the records or just stop and the records that happened before this event that crashed it would be inserted?

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined.

  Hi I know that as3 has some powerful new text search capabilities, especially when combined with regex. I don't even know if this is possible, but I would like to somehow, search any block of text, and return all nouns, adjectives and verbs. What would be the best(most efficent) way to do this? Is regex an option? or would I have to load in some sort of open sourced dictionary 9as used in spellcheckers) to compare with or?? After, I've pulled all the nouns, adjectives and verbs, I need to count and prioritize by their frequency. Any suggestions welcome...

• Adding more OR searches with CONTAINS Brings Query to Crawl

  I have a simple query that relies on two full-text indexed tables, but it runs extremely slow when I have the CONTAINS combined with any additional OR search. As seen in the execution plan, the two full text searches crush the performance. If I query with just 1 of the CONTAINS, or neither, the query is sub-second, but the moment you add OR into the mix the query becomes ill-fated. The two tables are nothing special, they're not overly wide (42 cols in one, 21 in the other; maybe 10 cols are FT indexed in each) or even contain very many records (36k recs in the biggest of the two). I was able to solve the performance by splitting the two CONTAINS searches into their own SELECT queries and then UNION the three together. Is this UNION workaround my only hope? Thanks.   I am adding a new GUID/Uniqueidentifier column to my table. ALTER TABLE table_name ADD VersionNumber UNIQUEIDENTIFIER UNIQUE NOT NULL DEFAULT NEWSEQUENTIALID() GO And when ever a record is updated in the table, I would want to update this column "VersionNumber". So I create a new trigger CREATE TRIGGER [DBO].[TR_TABLE_NAMWE] ON [DBO].[TABLE_NAME] AFTER UPDATE AS BEGIN UPDATE TABLE_NAME SET VERSIONNUMBER=NEWSEQUENTIALID() FROM TABLE_NAME D JOIN INSERTED I ON D.ID=I.ID/* some ID which is used to join*/ END GO But just realized that NEWSEQUENTIALID() can only be used with CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE. I got this error The newsequentialid() built-in function can only be used in a DEFAULT expression for a column of type 'uniqueidentifier' in a CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE statement. It cannot be combined with other operators to form a complex scalar expression. Is there a workaround for this ? Edit1: Changing NEWSEQUENTIALID() to NEWID() in the trigger solves this, but I am indexing this column and using NEWID() would be sub-optimal

• Why so many individual System.Web.* DLLs?

  I've been thinking about ways to refactor a fairly expansive class/utility library I have, and one thing I think I want to do is split off any higher-level helper utilities that introduce new dependencies. I read some previous questions here, and one that I particularly noticed was a comment about how Microsoft freely uses namespaces across DLLs. The example given was System.Web - it's in the base framework, but there's also a System.Web.dll that adds more functionality to the namespace if you want it. I also noticed several other System.Web.* DLLs available, and I was wondering if there's a reason why they wouldn't be combined into a single DLL. Could it be that they have their own individual dependencies and Microsoft (like me) wanted to separate assemblies along those lines? Or is it for easier maintenance? Something else entirely?

  Hi, Im wondering about speed optimization in PHP. I have a series of files that are requested every page load. On average there are 20 files. Each file must be read an parsed if they have changed. And this is excluding that standard files required for a web page (HTML, CSS, images, etc). EG - client requests page - server outputs html, css, images - server outputs dynamic content (20+/- files combined and minified). What would be the best way to serve these files as fast as possible?

  I have two large lists that are filled with dictionaries. I need to combine the entries if a value from dict2==dict1 and place the newly combined matches somewhere else. I'm having trouble explaining it. List one contains: {'keyword':value, 'keyword2':value2} List two: {'keyword2':value2, 'keyword3':value3} I want a new list with dictionaries including keyword1, keyword2, and keyword3 if both lists share the same 'keyword2' value. What's the best way to do this? When I try, I only come up with tons of nested for loops. Thanks

• Java combine parents of two large inheritance chains

  I have two parent classes in a huge project, let's say ClassA and ClassB. Each class has many subclasses, which in turn have many subclasses, which in turn have many subclasses, etc. My task is to "marry" these two "families" so that both inherit from a SINGLE parent. I need to essentially make ClassA and ClassB one class (parent) to both of their combined subclasses (children). ClassA and ClassB both currently implement Serializable. I am currently trying to make both inheritance chains inherit from ClassA, and then copy all functions and data members from ClassB into ClassA. This is tedious, and I think a terrible solution. What would be the CORRECT way to solve this problem?

Time (the column) is a date time in my database, and I can only see sedDate and setTime method but I want to store both - also my code does not work anyway ;-) if anyone could give me some pointers on inserting a combined date time (current time would be a great help as that's my first goal) into a MySql DB using a prepared statement I would be very grateful.   If RequireJS makes it so that multiple js files are combined into a single main.js file, is it essentially the same as ASP.NET's script bundling functionality? Would the only bonus of using RequireJS in addition to bundling be the ability to have certain scripts be loaded according to RequireJS configuration? I'm very new to both bundling and RequireJS, but after doing some reading, it seems like bundling takes care of multiple requests to load several js files. Are there any other things I might be missing out on with regards to using RequireJS with bundling?

• dates when saving to mysql database

  in my php code I was asking the user to choose day, month and year from some dropdown fields where values where 1, 2, 3 etc instead of 01, 02, 03. these were then combined to form a string like "YYYY-MM-DD" for the insertion in a db (in a date field). Having missed the initial 0, I thought I was sending strings in the wrong format, eg "YYYY-M-D" or YYYY-MM-D", but then I've noticed they appear in the right format in the database anyway: even if I submitted YYYY-M-D, it appeared as YYYY-MM-DD. is this the normal behaviour of mysql? if so, can i just avoid worrying about changing the code in my application?

  I am a beginner at java, and I am trying to create two strings and compare each character. If there is a matching character or characters, the code has to print out the length of each string, without the matching characters. For example, if one string is "super," and the other is "perfect," the program should interpret the strings as superfect, and print out 9 However, if there is no matching part, like pencil and eraser, the code should printout 12, which is the length of two strings combined. Right now, I am having a problem with comparing each character, since I tried to use if(input_word.compareToIgnoreCase(input_word2) != 0) but it only compared the string as a whole.. any suggestion? What gives? is there something i'm not getting in the way that Google play filters using the Manifest?
