  • Test whether svn REPO changes are reflected in Working Copy

    Requirement Changes will be made to the REPO directory and this should get updated to wc(working copy) as opposed to the normal way of WC REPO. Senario: My svn repo- /var/www/svn/drupal My checkout-dir/working-copy- /var/www/html/drupalsite So I've done: edited post-commit hook to contain: "/usr/bin/svn update /var/www/html/drupalsite" I won't make any change to svn WC. I'll make changes to svn REPO- /var/www/svn/drupal. After changes are made to svn repo, run "svn commit /var/www/html/drupalsite". This will trigger the post-commit hook. This inturn will run "svn update /var/www/svn/drupal" and thus my WC will get updated with the changes of REPO. Query a. Would the above steps 1-3 help achieve my 'Requirement'? b. I'd need advise on how to test if the above setup works successfully or not. I'm at loss about the success of steps 1-3 the reason why query(a) is present. This is a bit more of a concern for me. NB: I'm new to subversion. Whatever I've configured till now have been done by reading articles online. Reason for query (b) is because I'm not into development. It seems to be a php drupal website and I happen to be setting it up. So I'm not aware as to how to make a "PROPER" change in REPO so that it gets reflected in WC. If reflected, my configs are right and the team can start on development. I manually put a random file/folder into REPO dir for seeing a change in WC and ran steps 1-3 but was of no avail and later on learned that it was NOT the way to make a change to a REPO. Pleas advise. Thanks

  • Object Not found - Apache Rewrite issue

    I'm pretty new to setting up apache locally with xampp. I'm trying to develop locally with xampp (Ubuntu 11.04) linux 1.7.4 for a Drupal Site. I've actually git pulled an exact copy of this drupal site from another testing server hosted at MediaTemple. Issue I'll visit my local development environment virtualhost (http://bbk.loc) and the front page renders correctly with no errors from drupal or apache. The issue is the subsequent pages don't return an "Object not found" Error from apache. What is more bizarre is when I add various query strings and the pages are found (like http://bbk.loc?p=user).   • Can't connect to MySQL on CentOS 5 Error 13 - Permission Denied

    Ok, I have an install of CentOS 5 running as a GuestOS in VirtualBox. The network card for the Cent box is bridged with that of my host OS so that the boxes can see each other. Cent has an IP of 192.168.1.108 and my Host box has an IP of .104. Everything, with regard to networking, seems to be working properly as I can access the Drupal install that is on the Cent box from a web browser on my host box by navigating to http://192.168.1.108 however when I try to configure the database for Drupal through the Drupal install interface I am getting the Can't connect to MySQL error. First I thought this might of been a Firewall issue so I stopped iptables but that had no effect. I thought maybe the user I had setup did not have access to the server so I tried root and that did not work. Searching on the net said that I needed to provide a bind-address parameter to my.cnf so I did that with no change. (As a side note the length of my my.cnf file was MUCH shorter than the ones presented online. In fact under mysqld all I have are datadir, socket, user, and bind-address. Is this normal or should the file be more verbose?) After a few hours of messing with permissions and such I tried using 'localhost' as the value for the database server, from my HOST OS, and the Drupal install kicked off without a problem. So while my issue is resolved I am curious as to why 'localhost' works and why 192.168.1.108 did not? Is there something i need to do to specifically access the MySQL box via the aforementioned IP? Thanks.

  • Building extensions for Expression Blend 4 using MEF

    Introduction Although it was possible to write extensions for Expression Blend and Expression Design, it wasn’t very easy and out of the box only one addin could be used. With Expression Blend 4 it is possible to write extensions using MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Until today there’s no documentation on how to build these extensions, so look thru the code with Reflector is something you’ll have to do very often. Because Blend and Design are build using WPF searching the visual tree with Snoop and Mole belong to the tools you’ll be using a lot exploring the possibilities.  Configuring the extension project Extensions are regular .NET class libraries. To create one, load up Visual Studio 2010 and start a new project. Because Blend is build using WPF, choose a WPF User Control Library from the Windows section and give it a name and location. I named mine DemoExtension1. Because Blend looks for addins named *.extension.dll  you’ll have to tell Visual Studio to use that in the Assembly Name. To change the Assembly Name right click your project and go to Properties. On the Application tab, add .Extension to name already in the Assembly name text field. To be able to debug this extension, I prefer to set the output path on the Build tab to the extensions folder of Expression Blend. This means that everything that used to go into the Debug folder is placed in the extensions folder. Including all referenced assemblies that have the copy local property set to false. One last setting. To be able to debug your extension you could start Blend and attach the debugger by hand. I like it to be able to just hit F5. Go to the Debug tab and add the the full path to Blend.exe in the Start external program text field. Extension Class Add a new class to the project.  This class needs to be inherited from the IPackage interface. The IPackage interface can be found in the Microsoft.Expression.Extensibility namespace. To get access to this namespace add Microsoft.Expression.Extensibility.dll to your references. This file can be found in the same folder as the (Expression Blend 4 Beta) Blend.exe file. Make sure the Copy Local property is set to false in this reference. After implementing the interface the class would look something like: using Microsoft.Expression.Extensibility; namespace DemoExtension1 { public class DemoExtension1:IPackage { public void Load(IServices services) { } public void Unload() { } } } These two methods are called when your addin is loaded and unloaded. The parameter passed to the Load method, IServices services, is your main entry point into Blend. The IServices interface exposes the GetService<T> method. You will be using this method a lot. Almost every part of Blend can be accessed thru a service. For example, you can use to get to the commanding services of Blend by calling GetService<ICommandService>() or to get to the Windowing services by calling GetService<IWindowService>(). To get Blend to load the extension we have to implement MEF. (You can get up to speed on MEF on the community site or read the blog of Mr. MEF, Glenn Block.)  In the case of Blend extensions, all that needs to be done is mark the class with an Export attribute and pass it the type of IPackage. The Export attribute can be found in the System.ComponentModel.Composition namespace which is part of the .NET 4 framework. You need to add this to your references. using System.ComponentModel.Composition; using Microsoft.Expression.Extensibility;   namespace DemoExtension1 { [Export(typeof(IPackage))] public class DemoExtension1:IPackage { Blend is able to find your addin now. Adding UI The addin doesn’t do very much at this point. The WPF User Control Library came with a UserControl so lets use that in this example. I just drop a Button and a TextBlock onto the surface of the control to have something to show in the demo. To get the UserControl to work in Blend it has to be registered with the WindowService.  Call GetService<IWindowService>() on the IServices interface to get access to the windowing services. The UserControl will be used in Blend on a Palette and has to be registered to enable it. This is done by calling the RegisterPalette on the IWindowService interface and passing it an identifier, an instance of the UserControl and a caption for the palette. public void Load(IServices services) { IWindowService windowService = services.GetService<IWindowService>(); UserControl1 uc = new UserControl1(); windowService.RegisterPalette("DemoExtension", uc, "Demo Extension"); } After hitting F5 to start debugging Expression Blend will start. You should be able to find the addin in the Window menu now. Activating this window will show the “Demo Extension” palette with the UserControl, style according to the settings of Blend. Now what? Because little is publicly known about how to access different parts of Blend adding breakpoints in Debug mode and browsing thru objects using the Quick Watch feature of Visual Studio is something you have to do very often. This demo extension can be used for that purpose very easily. Add the click event handler to the button on the UserControl. Change the contructor to take the IServices interface and store this in a field. Set a breakpoint in the Button_Click method. public partial class UserControl1 : UserControl { private readonly IServices _services;   public UserControl1(IServices services) { _services = services; InitializeComponent(); }   private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { } } Change the call to the constructor in the load method and pass it the services property. public void Load(IServices services) { IWindowService service = services.GetService<IWindowService>(); UserControl1 uc = new UserControl1(services); service.RegisterPalette("DemoExtension", uc, "Demo Extension"); } Hit F5 to compile and start Blend. Got to the window menu and start show the addin. Click on  the button to hit the breakpoint. Now place the carrot text _services text in the code window and hit Shift+F9 to show the Quick Watch window. Now start exploring and discovering where to find everything you need.  More Information The are no official resources available yet. Microsoft has released one extension for expression Blend that is very useful as a reference, the Microsoft Expression Blend® Add-in Preview for Windows® Phone. This will install a .extension.dll file in the extension folder of Blend. You can load this file with Reflector and have a peek at how Microsoft is building his addins. Conclusion I hope this gives you something to get started building extensions for Expression Blend. Until Microsoft releases the final version, which hopefully includes more information about building extensions, we’ll have to work on documenting it in the community.

    Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver).   • Detect and monitor changes to MySQL database

    I use Drupal, and instead of having to use the formal interface to make small changes to a site all the time, I am wondering if there is a way to determine what modifications Drupal makes to the database so that I can make them manually the next time. For example, if I use Drupal’s interface to add a module to the site, I would like to be able to find out what database entries it changes/adds so that if I want to add another module, I can add or change the file or database entry myself instead of having to go through Druapl. This way, I can have better control over the system as well as gain a greater understanding of how it works underneath. My environment is Windows XP, MySQL latest stable, phpmyadmin.

  • umask is being ignored on Gentoo while creating new files

    I have a server running Gentoo and hosting a drupal installation. Whenever a Drupal update is executed, the directory permissions of the updated module turn from 755 to 744 preventing the application from accessing the files. The umask is defined as 022 under /etc/profile and the Apache server is running under user and group nobody. I believe this has nothing to do with the drupal installation since if I create a directory as root, the same happens, it is created with 744 permissions, since the umask is 022 shouldn't it be created as 755 ? Why is the umask being ignored and how do I tell the server to create the directories with permission 755 ?

    For those that follow me I’ve been away from blogging and twittering for a couple of months. This is the reason. For the last few months I’ve been working with a cross-functional team putting together a new product from the people that run WordPress, the free premiere blogging platform. The Reason Back in December I was approached by the WordPress team about building a new platform that took advantage of the power of SharePoint but the ease of WordPress.   • Forum engine with full LDAP integration [closed]

    We are looking for forum engine which may actually maintain user data into LDAP, maybe via mods. Core point is about ability to maintain the data, i.e. all user profile settings, like nickname, password, email, avatar, birthday and others (preferably configurable). One example of good ldap integration, level of which I'm expecting, is drupal's ldap integration, which allows to map any user's attribute into ldap and keeps it in sync with database. Year ago I've done a small research over existing Free&FOSS engines and find out few forum engines with LDAP integration, namely SFM, phpBB and something else. The most maintained solution were provided by phpBB3, which supports LDAP integration out-of-box, but it is unable to sync data with changes in LDAP server made by other software. Actually it wasn't even propagating changes back, I'm not saying about ability to map additional attributes (other than name/password/email). Also, I haven't found any forum with architecture which have proper abstraction over user settings, thus I doubt that this engines (including phpBB) are possible to mod such functionality without introducing dramatic changes into core codebase. More recent research showed that even some commercial software, like IPB is unable to keep it's database synced with LDAP directory and map additional attributes. In other words, all support I've seen so far is simple user creation upon first user's login, which is not good for us, as forum is not primary site and should not maintain it's own users base (to reduce risk of possible collisions). LDAP import is required due to many other services (ftp, email, jabber, drupal site) using same users base. Currently we have forum embedded into Drupal site, but we are unsatisfied with it's features. BTW, we are using Linux and this is not duplicate of this question, as it's author seems to be satisfied with behaviour described above. So, my question is: Are there any (preferably FOSS&free) forum engines that may import, export, keep in sync, or otherwise integrade with LDAP user database (preferably with ability to map additional fields to ldap attributes)?

  • Experienced programmer, beginner at web design, tools for effective maintainable web design? [closed]

    I do quite a bit of programming in my work, which I'm comfortable with, but recently I've being trying to do some web-design for non-work related reasons. I've got a Drupal site up and running, and added some content. But they all look fairly basic. Header with some content. It doesn't look particularly polished. Anyway, as an example, what I wanted to do was make some "bubbles", each with some text in them. From a programmers point of view, say: bubble(question_text, answer_text) might expand to a box with some border, with "Question: " + question_text then "Answer: " + answer_text. Of course I'd have lots of these bubbles, but I'd like to change their look and feel in one place, so simple HTML would be a maintainable nightmare. I also want to lay them out on the screen in some fashion. I was thinking a mixture of javascript and CSS, or possibly use PHP which Drupal uses. On the other hand, I fear I might be taking a 1990s approach to this, and that there's actually tools available now that make this process a lot easier. I'm just wondering what the best approach to this sort of task is? Should I be using offline web design software and copying the code to Drupal, and if so, any recommendations? I'm sorry if my question is a bit vague, because I'm not really sure what question I should be asking. I'd appreciate if you answer and comment, and I'll try my best to be more specific as I understand more.

  • Thinking about introducing PHP/MySQL into a .NET/SQL Server environment. Thoughts?

    I posted this over at reddit but it didn't gain any momentum. So here is what is going on: our company was recently purchased by another web shop and I was promoted to head of development here in our office. Our office is completely .NET/SQL Server and the company who purchased us is a *nix/PHP/MySQL shop. Now several of our large clients who are on the .NET platform are up for complete rewrites (the sites are from '04 and are running on the 1.x framework.) While reviewing the proposal for one client with my superior I came across a pretty extensive module which would require several hundred man hours to complete and voiced some concern about it in relation to the quote. One of the guys from the PHP group happen to hear this and told me of a module that they (PHP Group) use in Drupal that does exactly what the proposal in front of me was describing and it only took, at most, 8 hours to completely setup / configure. My superior suggested that I take a look at Drupal and the module in question over the weekend but stressed that we should only go that route if it really made sense. So this weekend I spun up a CentOS instance in VirtualBox and started playing around with Drupal. I am still fleshing it out so don't have a solid opinion on it just yet. Anyway I have some questions / fears that I was hoping progit could help me out in! Has anyone had experience doing this and, if so, how did it turn out? I am completely ignorant to what IDE's (if any) are available to for PHP. The last time I worked with PHP it was in Notepad and that was less than intuitive. So is there are more intuitive IDE out there for PHP dev? I don't want to scare my .NET guys. Since the merger all of our new business clients that have had relatively small websites have gone on Drupal with the larger sites going on .NET. My concern is that if they see a large site go onto Drupal that they might start getting anxious and start handing out their resumes. For the foreseeable future there are no plans to liquidate the .NET platform and really we can't just from a support standpoint. What would be the best way to approach this? Any other helpful info?   • FLEX, how to specify parent html item, when I call external functions ?

    hi, I'm calling a javascript function from my flex application to set width and height of my html wrapper according to application size. However, I've many flex applications on my page and the wrappers have not id attribute. I'm using a unique javascript function and passing it the parameters. How could I specify the "parent" html element in these parameters ?   • Fiddler Inspector for Federation Messages

    Fiddler is a very useful tool for troubleshooting all kinds of HTTP(s) communications. It also features various extensibility points to make it even more useful. Using the inspector extensibility mechanism, I quickly knocked up an inspector for typical federation messages (thanks for Eric Lawrence btw). Below is a screenshot for WS-Federation. I also added support for SAML 2.0p request/response messages: The inspector can be downloaded from the identitymodel Codeplex site. Simply copy the binary to the inspector folder in the Fiddler directory.

  • MEF to the rescue in Task-it

    One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition.   • Replacement for MySQL proxy

    We have a standard MySQL Master/Slave replication for our database. In order to use the slave server we have set up MySQL Proxy. However we have been strongly discouraged to use it as it still alpha and not very well supported. Our application is built with Drupal 7 which doesn't use very effectively its slave database (see my related question on Drupal Answers). What tools could we use to act like MySQL proxy and send SELECT queries on the slave server in order to distribute the load ?

  • MySQL not respond when overheaded

    I have few Drupal 6 websites on webhosting, which causes this strange problem: some tables, especially Cache and Watchdog, tend to overhead, when overhead is bigger than some amount of kB, MySQL server is refusing connection to given Drupal database or connection is broken during query execution, Optimizing table (just overheaded rows) in phpMyAdmin is putting all back to normal. But - until database is optimized, site is showing just MySQL errors, which is ugly... Where is a problem? Thank you for any hints I could pass back to the hosting admins!

  • Git tutorial: Understanding git pull and branches (using a specific example repo)

    Backround: Suppose I have the following Git URLs (hosted on github) http://github.com/mikl/drupal.git git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git (Git read-only) I am interested in having a local copy of this repository so I can pratice working with branches in git and see how my local working tree can change depending on which branch I am working with. Questions: To get started, I set up a local directory and do git clone git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git ... Will this clone all of the branches? Or will it only clone master? The web front-end for github gives me a "drop down" menu that allows me to switch branches ... Does changing this drop-down actually change which branch I will be grabbing when I run git clone? If I want a new copy of this repository on my local machine, but I am interested in only two branches of this repository and I want to ignore all the rest, what command do I use to ensure I clone only those two branches and nothing else (assume one of the branches is master)?

  • Looking for WAMP Benchmarking (my current WAMP is very slow, so are other solutions)

    I'm running ZWAMP WAMP stack on my local development machine. However I have found it to be very slow at serving pages from a Drupal site I have setup. By contrast, my live production site on shared hosting is reasonably quick. For me the goal with a local WAMP stack was to develop offline and send completed work to the live production site. I liked ZWAMP because it didn't require adjustments to User Access Control or other permissions. I've looked at Drupal Acquia Development Stack but found this too restrictive: only one site instance/doc root can be installed. I've looked at other DAMP stacks and heard reports of them being slow. My local development machine that I am running the WAMP stack on is a Dual Core 2.6Ghz hyperthreaded Intel i7, 4Gb RAM, 7200rpm hard disk, running Windows 64bit professional. Surely this is fast enough. So I'm looking for: Causes of the slowness of the WAMP and how to improve the speed Benchmark data of various WAMP stacks
