• Workstation Build: Single 2.66ghz i-7 with overclock potential, OR Dual 5520 2.26ghz Xeons?

  There are probably better places to ask this, but I am used to the excellent quality of responses on stack overflow. I am rebuilding my desktop in a few months. Aside from normal lightweight internet usage, I use it to run sqlServer, mySql, 1-2 Ubuntu VMs from time to time, lots of IDE's, and a media server for my PS3. The two possible setups cost the exact same amount (within $50) and would both have 12gb 1333mhz ddr3 ram and a 500gb RAID-0 array (250x2). Now, If I go with a single i-7 920 2.66ghz quadcore, I can easily overclock it to 3ghz, and would have cash leftover to get a 160gb ssd (either the ocz vertex or the 120gb intel) for the main OS/Program install drive. Else, I could get a dual lga1366 motherboard with two e5520 Xeon's (2.26ghz),just use the disks I already have. So, do I go for 8 physical/16 virtual cores at 2.26ghz (No overclocking on server boards) with normal disk I/O, or a 4 physical/8 virtual cores at 3.0ghz with really outstanding disk I/O?

  This question is similar to 3 Monitors, 1 graphics card but with different video card. It has the same ports as GT 120 in that question. Would it support dual monitor? I don't need 3 monitors. Just 2 is good. Checked GeForce GT 430 Specs but have no idea whether it will support or not. While on it, can somebody explain how to know whether a graphics card support multiple display from such information?

  I'm using my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T60) and I have a secondary monitor (which has a different resolution than my laptop screen) connected by VGA. Kubuntu recognizes the monitor and it functions but my desktop is mirrored (i.e. an identical copy) across the dual monitors (which is useless to me). How can I extend my desktop across both monitors? P.S. I googled it but the solutions I found weren't standard, they were hardware specific and you had to manually change system files, etc.. There must be an easier way. edit: Here is a snapshot of the settings.

• What is the best file system to use for a second hard drive when dual booting between WinXP and Win7

  I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

  I have been following this Tutorial to get dual monitors working on my box http://www.dwasifar.com/?p=862&cpage=1#comment-5727 It works! However, when ever I move a window, the redraw of that window takes 3-8 seconds. Even moving the window takes the same amount of time Is this being done in software rather than the nVidea hardware? The windows themselves do not respond. I have seen a few old threads but no relevant fixes - If anyone could suggest a fix I would very much appreciate it. I have tried: sudo nvidea-xconfig sudo nvidia-settings Then configure TwinView go to save the config... and the error unable to parse xorg.conf file and the error in the console VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Undefined Device "null" referenced by Screen "Configured Screen Device" Segmentation fault

  Hello all, I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and used to dual-boot Fedora, but I replaced Fedora with Pardus. After the install, I went into ubuntu, and did a sudo update-grub. It detected my Pardus 2011 install there. When I rebooted, it did not show up in my grub2 menu however. I went back to Ubuntu and did it again...then checked the grub.cfg, and it is not there. I have read that Pardus uses a grub legacy. How can I get Pardus into my grub2 menu? • How important is dual-gigabit lan for a super user's home NAS?

  Long story short: I'm building my own home server based on Ubuntu with 4 drives in RAID 10. Its primary purpose will be NAS and backup. Would I be making a terrible mistake by building a NAS Server with a single Gigabit NIC? Long story long: I know the absolute max I can get out of a single Gigabit port is 125MB/s, and I want this NAS to be able to handle up to 6 computers accessing files simultaneously, with up to two of them streaming video. With Ubuntu NIC-bonding and the performance of RAID 10, I can theoretically double my throughput and achieve 250MB/s (ok, not really, but it would be faster). The drives have an average read throughput of 83.87MB/s according to Tom's Hardware. The unit itself will be based on the Chenbro ES34069-BK-180 case. With my current hardware choices, it'll have this motherboard with a Core i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Overkill, I know, but this server will be doing other things as well (like transcoding video). Unfortunately, the only Mini-ITX boards I can find with dual-gigabit and 6 SATA ports are Intel Atom-based, and I need more processing power than an Atom has to offer. I would love to find a board with 6 SATA ports and two Gigabit LAN ports that supports a Core i3 CPU. So far, my search has come up empty. Thus, my dilemma. Should I hold out for such a board, go with an Atom-based solution, or stick with my current single-gigabit configuration? I know there are consumer NAS units with just one gigabit interface (probably most of them), but I think I will demand a lot more from my server than the average home user. Any advice is appreciated.   I have been looking for information about using a second monitor, and thought of using a touchscreen. Will a touchscreen monitor work in a dual setup if it is not the main monitor? I haven't found any information on this; I've only found information about the touchscreen being the main monitor. That is, except at this SU question (snippet below): If you mean do the touch screen features still work on the other machine, the answer is yes. Past that, you can even see some of the touch screen features on a non touch screen monitor (just not the multi touch features!) For example, on the taskbar, click (without releasing) on any icon and then drag the mouse up, and you will see that it does the same as using your finger and dragging up. I have a HP 2510 for the main monitor. I'm thinking of adding a HP 2310ti (the touchscreen) as the secondary. My graphics card is a geforce gtx 295. I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

• How do I set up dual monitors on Kubuntu 10.04 using the latest nVidia drivers with a 9800M video ca

  I'm a Linux newb so please try to keep the lingo low-key. I installed the latest nVidia drivers on my laptop using the 9800M card. The laptop is a Gateway P-7805u and I'm connected to the second monitor using VGA. Also, before installing the nVidia drivers (and just using the basic drivers included with Kubuntu 10.04), basic dual monitor support worked, except I could not enable compositing features for some reason. So I thought the proprietary drivers would fix this. Several issues have arisen since installation: 1) I've clicked through all of the display settings to activate the second screen with absolutely no change. 2) When I try to apply settings and Save Configuration as the nVidia help suggests, I am told that I cannot save to the X.conf file. I assume this is due to innate permissions on my user settings, which I have no idea how to properly configure. 3) I have no idea where to go from here, as most of the fixes I found online involve Linux syntax and verbiage, to which I'm totally clueless after spending over half my life with Windows.

• Dual hard drive Windows 7 system, modified the registry to get programs to install on second drive, now IE doesn't work

  I have a dual hard drive Windows 7 system, Windows is installed on an SSD (C:) and I modified the registry to try to force programs to install on second HDD drive (another letter). The registry edits are pretty simple, just a few keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion to change the drive letter. For the most part the system is very fast and works great, but IE doesn't work anymore. With IE10, it opens for a flash with a white window then closes. I tried installed IE11 which opens a white window for a few seconds, doesn't respond, then crashes. I've tried all the solutions I could find. This includes resetting the IE settings, "uninstalling" and re-installing IE, which is just turning it on and off in "Turn Windows Features on or off", copying the Program Files\Internet Explorer files onto both/either drives, changing the registry keys back to use C:, lots of rebooting, and safe mode. Nothing has worked. I don't see errors in the event viewer, but I might not know what to look for. Any ideas on how to get IE running? I don't need IE for daily browsing, I just need it for cross-browser testing on sites I build and on the rare occasion a page only works in IE. I don't really want to use a virtual machine, but would be ok with something standalone like tredosoft's, but I'm not aware of something like that for current versions of IE.

• How to Dual-Boot Kali-Linux and Windows 8.1?

  I have Acer V3-772G 1 TB Harddisk. I shrinked my biggest partition in order to install Kali Linux. When installing Kali, GRUB couldn't detect windows 8 so I kept going on(I installed grub as my masterboot). After installed Kali there was no way to boot Windows 8.1, but booting Kali was OK with GRUB in legacy-BIOS. When I tried to change bios to UEFI it couldn't find any OS (took too much time, nearly 1 hour). So I tried to update GRUB with boot-repair within a Ubuntu Live USB. But after updating GRUB I terrified, in UEFI and Legacy mode grub couldn't find ANY OS (Both Kali and Windows) so I have no option other than using Ubuntu Live. I tried every possible options but nothing has worked for me. I tried rEFInd in UEFI mode it worked only for Kali. I still cannot boot my windows 8.1 . I considered to restore to factory setting with a Windows Rescue USB but kept telling me "No driver found". Please help me to dual boot or remove Kali and restore my Windows 8.1

• What could cause a dual-monitor PC to suddenly stop using one of the screens?

  I've got a dual-monitor setup using a GeForce 7900GT that was working fine for over a year... then suddenly, only one of the screens works. It's not OS-related, because even on startup, only one screen displays the BIOS checks. In the past, both screens would show it together. I didn't change anything to trigger this The monitor that gets a signal is random -- sometimes the one on the left goes black, sometimes the one on the right. The monitors and their cables are good -- I can switch both or either, and I get a signal just fine. They're plugged in, too. It's not the video card, either -- I have an identical 7900GT in another machine, and swapping the two didn't fix anything. It's not dust on the motherboard -- I pulled everything out, cleaned it off, checked for obvious damage, put it all back together, and no change. My next two steps are going to be to reset the CMOS info and to try swapping out the motherboard. Before I do that, does anyone have any other ideas?

It seems like there would be a simple way to accomplish this (maybe with analytics) but for some reason it is escaping me. • Anyone know how to get dual screens working on a Dell E6410 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit?

  I've installed the drivers from nVidia. When I go into the NVIDIA X Server Settings application, in the X Server Display Configuration setcion, and click the "Configure" button, "TwinView" is disabled. Also, clicking "Detect Displays" doesn't pick up my monitor (which is connected through a port replicator - keyboard and mouse in that port replicator work fine). Has anyone else seen this? Is this just a limitation of the current nvidia linux drivers?

  I have a computer (HP Pavilion g6-2342dx) which came with Windows 8, and thus the new UEFI boot system. I would like to install a few OS's which are not EFI compatible, and Arch GNU/Linux with BIOS mode. However, I would not like to completely wipe all my files to set to legacy. My preferred options would be to: 1. Multiboot legacy OS alongside my EFI os 2. Convert Windows 8 and Ubuntu to legacy without reformatting or switching to MSDOS part table. If anyone could suggest a solution or a method, your help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  My ideal scenario is that there is a script/command to boot into the alternate OS from the current OS you are in, restarting the same OS without running the script/command will return it to the same OS. Currently I have grub setup to remember the last OS booted, using GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, I'd like to keep this option. I have read about the ability to manipulate grub from within Ubuntu to boot into windows, shown in this link. Is there a way to similarly boot into Ubuntu from within Windows? I am primarily connecting to this device remotely and hence my query.

  With VMWare it works fine and I can run multiple cores on a VMWare image. With Sun VirtualBox I can only run 1 cpu on a image. Its annoying. Why does Sun Virtualbox not work the same as VMWare in this respect?? • Dual monitor webbrowsing with Firefox - Addon that opens links on the other window?

  I often browse news aggressors like Reddit.com and I want to be able to have one Firefox window open on each of my two screens, and when I middle click on a link on my left screen, it will open up the tab on my right firefox window. I know that there are some plugins that can open up new windows, but if I do that I'll have to many windows open and I'd rather manage my open news stories via tab bars rather than with windows (clearer, more efficient to browse, and easier to bookmark). Is there a Firefox addon with which I can middle click on a link and it will open it in a new tab in my other window?

Running boot-repair on my mint live session messed stuff up. Now I can't even boot to my live session usb because grub is left over. Windows 8.1 does work though.

  In the Linux Mint 12 LXDE the partitions are listed as nsd 1, 2, 3, 4, though I have a Windows 8 CP installation on one of the two partitions on the single hard drive. The space usage is differing in both system calculations, though still relateable. Where the partition is at around 20 GB usage in Windows 8 it will be at around 24 GB in the Linux installation menu. I am just wondering is there a certain way to choose the right partition? Also in the drop down menu regarding the boot loader, there are multiple options, which one would be the one to be chosen in this case? What about the system-reserve partition of Windows 7 (the one I am trying to overwrite)? What is happening with that?
