  • Gnome-shell fails to load on 12.10

    I'm usually the one answering questions, but in this I'm throughly stumped! My Setup: Ubuntu 12.10 (Dist upgrade form 12.04) ATI M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650] Upon the first installation of 12.10 I had all kinds of issues getting the Legacy ATI drivers to install (I guess the source for the drivers isn't kosher with kernel 3.5). So, I added the repository ppa:makson96/fglrx - which has a version of the ATI source patched to work with kernel 3.5. After installation of fglrx-legacy from that PPA, gnome-shell and all my graphics work fine... until today. The Problem I unsuspended my computer today and the screen was black (not off, the black from the gnome lock screen). I'd move my mouse/hit a key and the background would flash and then it'd go back to black. Restarted via VT1 Logged into Gnome (gnome-shell) session, but no gnome-shell! Investigation: First, I went to VT1 and tried export DISPLAY=:0;gnome-shell --replace. It appeared to work fine, switch back to X and nothing. Went back to VT1 and saw this error message: JS ERROR: !!!     Im making a 2D game for android and I made over 200 levels/scenes.I also made a game over scene that opens when the players collides with an obscale.In the GameOver scene I added a retry button which I wanna make it so it opens the last level played.Im new in Unity and scripting.I've read other similar questions but none of them fixed my issue.Anyone has any idea that could help ? Im doing this because I don't wanna create over 200 game over scenes and edit each obscale in game. Thank you. Edit : Im using javascript.

    Assume I have a stream of records that need to have some computation. Records will have a combination of these functions run Sum, Aggregate, Sum over the last 90 seconds, or ignore. A data record looks like this: Date;Data;ID Question Assuming that ID is an int of some kind, and that int corresponds to a matrix of some delegates to run, how should I use C# to dynamically build that launch map? I'm sure this idea exists... it is used in Windows Forms which has many delegates/events, most of which will never actually be invoked in a real application.   • High CPU load for 1:30 minutes when mounting ext4-raid partition

    I have a raid 5 (software) with 5x2TB drives. I encrypted the raid with cryptsetup and put an ext4-partition on top. In the beginning opening and mounting the raid took less than 10 seconds, now (for a few weeks) mounting alone takes 1:30 minutes and the cpu stays around 93% the whole time: The output of "time sudo mount /dev/mapper/8000 /media/8000" is: real 1m31.952s user 0m0.008s sys 1m25.229s At the same time only one line is added to /var/log/syslog: kernel: [ 2240.921381] EXT4-fs (dm-1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null) My Ubuntu-version is "12.04.1 LTS" and no updates are pending. I checked the partition with fsck, but it says that all is ok. The "cryptsetup luksOpen" command only takes a few seconds. I also tried changing the raid-bitmap (as it was suggested in some forum) but it did not change the behaviour. sudo mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -b internal and sudo mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -b none I had the idea that it might be the hardware being slow, but a read test with "sudo hdparm -t /dev/md0" spit out values between 62 and 159 MB/sec: Timing buffered disk reads: 382 MB in 3.00 seconds = 127.14 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 482 MB in 3.02 seconds = 159.62 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 190 MB in 3.03 seconds = 62.65 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 474 MB in 3.02 seconds = 157.12 MB/sec Although I think it is strange that the read rate jumps by more than 100% - could that mean something? The speed test when reading from the mapped (decrypted) device shows similar behavior, although it is of course much slower.   • Create option to load Ubuntu or Windows 7 at start-up

    We have a new Dell Optiplex 790 desktop with Windows 7 and just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it using a USB stick that was configured as a boot drive. We created a new partition for Ubuntu during installation using the partition editor that comes up during installation. Everything seems to have gone fine with the installation except that, unexpectedly, there is no option to boot up Ubuntu when the computer is started. We just start the computer and Windows starts up with no option to ever start Ubuntu. The only way we have gotten Ubuntu to start is by putting the USB stick used for installation back into the computer and having the computer boot from it. Then GRUB shows up and the Ubuntu OS that we installed starts up (rather than the live-CD version on the USB stick). Previous times we have installed Ubuntu, GRUB shows up when we start the computer and we can choose among the various OSes installed. Can anyone suggest what to do? We want to have the option to launch either Windows 7 or Ubuntu 12.04 when we start the computer, with the default being Windows 7. Right now there is no option and Windows 7 just starts the way it did before we installed Ubuntu. Note that if we hit F1 soon after starting the computer, we get some sort of Windows bootloader (not sure of exact name) but there is no option for Ubuntu; just Windows 7. Also note that if we hit the shift key soon after starting the computer, as some help pages have suggested, nothing happens (Windows 7 is loaded as usual). Thanks in advance!

  • PC noisy due to high load - why?

    I just installed an ubuntu on my pc(Dell Inspiration I560SR-358, with CPU E5700 3GHz, 4G memory, and NVIDIA GeForce G310). The pc becomes noisy before that it's quiet with a windows 7 on it. How come? How to set it to be quiet again in unbuntu 10.04. One of the two cpu usage is always 100%. I think that is the reason. //re-edit Everything gets ok after I restart the computer.But the fan is still running which makes it noisy, if i switch to windows 7, it becomes quiet again.

  • Desktop background will not load after performing aticonfig --adapter=all --ovt=opengl

    I am trying to get Eagle to work on ubuntu 14.04 LTS. When I run Eagle and open a schematic the display is not refreshing/redrawing correctly. One solution that I found was to install the flgrx drivers and do the aticonfig command to use opengl... So I did and rebooted. Now when I turn on my laptop I get all the way to the login screen, login, and then nothing happens, it just goes to the background image with no icons or anything... I tried deleting and copying the original xorg.conf file and no results... What do I do other than reinstalling Ubuntu? is there anyway to force the original driver?

    I want to try Ubuntu from my 16Gb stick without ditching Win7 just yet. Everything boots up fine, I get the spash screen, I get the question screen (Do you want to try Ubuntu or install (or something like that)) I select try and then my screen goes black with what appears to be a DOS prompt. No keyboard keys work at this time. Have tried re-downloading Ubuntu, rebooting etc. Any help very much appreciated. Regards Steve

  • Managed LAMP platform for maximizing availability and global reach, not scalability

    Assume a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP application for a small base of registered users. With small userbase, there are no traffic peaks so the scalability that cloud platforms offer is not imperative. But the system is mission-critical, so availability is the primary goal. Users are also distributed across Asia, Europe, and US, so multiple server locations that minimize users' network hops would be highly desirable. The dream: a managed VPS platform where we would configure a single server (uploading PHP and other files, manipulating database, etc.), and the platform would automatically mirror the server in a handful of key places around the world (say one on each US coast, one in Europe, one in east Asia). File system synchronization and MySQL replication would happen automatically. Core operating system is managed, so we don't need to do full system administration and security, and low-level backups are also done by service provider, though we also do our own backups as well. Couple this with some sort of DNS geo-detection, so users are routed to the nearest operational server... with support for https, of course. Does such a dream exist? If not, what are some approaches to accomplish the same end with minimal time investment and minimal monthly hosting costs?

  • ubuntu 12.10 slow application load upon restart

    new ubuntu user. after boot (boot is quite fast), opening applications such as firefox, libra, system settings, takes close to 10 seconds to open. after the application is loaded in RAM, the application opens fine. the system feels snappy, quick. when i have two FIREFOX open, unity is snappy in showing me the two windows side by side. but upon bootup, loading the application takes 10 seconds. there is not much hdd activity. fresh install. its the same for system settings and browsing system settings. when system settings is opened for the first time (10 second), and i click for example Color, it will take quite long to open the color settings. hardware: i3 4gb ram radeon 5770 250gb sata gigabyte h55m motherboard i am using ubuntu straight out of the box, no propriety drivers. 64 bit. i have reinstalled OS, and still the same.

  • Ubuntu won't load properly all of a sudden

    This has been the second time this has happened, but when I booted this morning my hardware wasn't detected anymore. I see both screens pop up as normal, choose Ubuntu 14.04 in the grub list and from that point onwards none of the following hardware seems to be used: VGA, DVI-D, USB, Audio jacks. This has happened before, but at that time, I still had one screen left, so I could navigate through the (non-USB) keyboard and how weird this may sound, but from the moment I opened Windows in vmware, all of my hardware started working again. This was a few weeks ago, but the same seems to have happened again. This time I can't use that little hack though, since now Ubuntu stops using both screens. My hardware is all detected, Ubuntu just doesn't want to use it somehow. Did anybody else encounter this and how did they solve this?

  • Setting up a global MySQL Cluster in the cloud

    I'm giving the question an overhaul to more specifically identify where I need help. I use two tools to manage a bunch of cloud server: Puppet and Rundeck. Both of these can be configured to use a mysql backend. I'd like to setup an instance of each application in both the U.S., and the U.K., treating the U.K. servers as hot stand-bys in case of failure in the U.S. I want to use a MySql cluster so that the data is automatically replicated from the U.S. to the U.K. Because these are hot standbys, high performance is not a goal. Redundancy and data integrity are most important. My question revolves around the setup of the mysql cluster. I want to run three servers, each one running a data node, a sql node, and a management node. Is this a valid configuration for mysql server? If so, could someone point me in the right direction for creating such a setup? I've downloaded the offical tarball, and the official debian, and the documentation for them contradicts many of the online tutorials. I'm installing on Ubuntu 10.04.

  • Grub Doesn't Load after Update

    Hi Everyone, After I updated ubuntu (I believe it was most likely a kernel update) and restarted I selected ubuntu from the windows boot loader (I am using wubi). At this point I would usually land on the grub loader; however, I see something about NTFS file not found and a couple other screens flash then the computer restarts. I have tried pressing ESC right after to try and get some options, but I think grub is just not found or something... Not sure what is going on.. Any help would be much appreciated :). Thanks!

  • Where to export a truly global environment variable?

    I want to set an environment variable that will be visible to all processes launched by Upstart. This is on a CentOS system, but I presume the same applies to Ubuntu given that they both use Upstart. Somewhere in /etc/init/ perhaps? Note that adding it in /etc/profile.d only applies to login shells. I want all processes (e.g cron, rc.local, etc) to see it. Obviously I'd prefer not to edit existing sys config files if it can be avoided.

  • Local traffic through VPN, global traffic through WAN

    I have an issue with my internet connection. I am using VPN (Aventail Client) to access the local resources. When connected to VPN the Internet traffic passes through it, not through my LAN or Wi-Fi network. I would like to change the routing table to use the Wi-Fi adapter of the PC for WAN traffic. I have routing file, which works very well and routes the traffic in this way, but only when I am physically connected to the local network through LAN. But I can't set it to work with the VPN connection, because I have no gateway when I am connected to it. Etc this in bold is missing.     In struts2 I have very simple task, after user is logged-in I'm checking if they profile is complete. If not user should be blocked from any other action and redirected to edit page. BUT! interceptor is global, so it raises struts2 error: No result defined for action (name of editProfile action class) When interceptor is placed inside some package - then everything ok. What should i do to declare global action?

  • In Ruby, how to implement global behaviour?

    Hi all, I want to implement the concept of a Workspace. This is a global concept - all other code will interact with one instance of this Workspace. The Workspace will be responsible for maintaining the current system state (i.e. interacting with the system model, persisting the system state etc) So what's the best design strategy for my Workspace, bearing in mind this will have to be testable (using RSpec now, but happy to look at alternatives). Having read thru some open source projects out there and I've seen 3 strategies. None of which I can identify as "the best practice". They are: Include the singleton class. But how testable is this? Will the global state of Workspace change between tests? Implemented all behaviour as class methods. Again how do you test this? Implemented all behaviour as module methods. Not sure about this one at all! Which is best? Or is there another way? Thanks, Gordon
