  • How to write a value validation method for core data?

    The docs say: you should implement methods of the form validate:error:, as defined by the NSKeyValueCoding protocol so lets say I have an attribute which is an int: friendAge I want to make sure that any friend may not be younger than 30. So how would I make that validation method? -validateFriendAge:error: What am I gonna do in there, exactly? And what shall I do with that NSError I get passed? I think it has an dictionary where I can return a humanly readable string in an arbitrary language (i.e. the one that's used currently), so I can output a reasonable error like: "Friend is not old enough"... how to do that?

  • What's does "cardinality of an relationship" mean in Core Data?

    From the docs: If all of a managed object's relationship delete rules are Nullify, then for that object at least there is no additional work to do (you may have to consider other objects that were at the destination of the relationship—if the inverse relationship was either mandatory or had a lower limit on cardinality, then the destination object or objects might be in an invalid state). Does someone have an example of this cardinality thing? What's this good for and what's important to know about this? (sounds very important...)

  • Which kind of changes can't I do with lightweight migration in Core Data?

    I recently tried a lot of different stuff with lightweight migration. These all work: 1) Rename attributes (with renaming identifier specified) 2) Add attributes 3) Add new entity + new attribute + inverse relationship to an already existing entity 4) remove existing entity + relationships to that entity = It almost looks like just about anything can be handled with LM. Did I miss something? In which cases am I getting into trouble and need an some more complex approach?

  • Most performant way to check how many objects are referenced by an to-many relationship in Core Data

    Lets say I have an employees relationship in an Company entity, and it's to-many. And they're really many. Apple in 100 years, with 1.258.500.073 employees. Could I simply do something like NSInteger numEmployees = [apple.employees count]; without firing 1.258.500.073 faults? (Well, in 100 years, the iPhone will easily handle so many objects, for sure...but anyways)

    I'm trying to create a fetch predicate that is the analog to the SQL "IN" statement, and the syntax to do so with NSPredicate escapes me. Here's what I have so far (the relevant excerpt from my fetching routine): NSFetchRequest *request = [[[NSFetchRequest alloc] init] autorelease]; NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName: @"BodyPartCategory" inManagedObjectContext:_context]; [request setEntity:entity]; NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"(name IN %@)", [RPBodyPartCategory defaultBodyPartCategoryNames]]; [request setPredicate:predicate]; The entity "BodyPartCategory" has a string attribute "name". I have a list of names (just NSString objects) in an NSArray as returned by: [RPBodyPartCategory defaultBodyPartCategoryNames] So let's say that array has string such as {@"Liver", @"Kidney", @"Thyroid"} ... etc. I want to fetch all 'BodyPartCategory' instances whose name attribute matches one of the strings in the set provided (technically NSArray but I can make it an NSSet). In SQL, this would be something like: SELECT * FROM BodyPartCategories WHERE name IN ('Liver', 'Kidney', 'Thyroid') I've gone through various portions of the Predicate Programming Guide, but I don't see this simple use case covered. Pointers/help much appreciated!

  • Core Animation cross-dissolve between one string (or image) and another when changing bound value?

    I have an NSTextView and an NSImageView that is bound to a NSString and an NSImage in my code. I would like to have the displayed string and image cross-dissolve when I change the string and image in code. Any way to do this? Do I need to stop using bindings? (And if I do, is there any trick to getting the string and the image to cross-dissolve when I change the value, or do I have to do something weird like fade it out and fade a new one back in?)

    I get it: When a managed object context saves, the snapshots of all edited objects are compared against the values in the persistent store to see if the PS has changed since the snapshot was made. If it did change, then there's a conflict and optimistic locking failed, according to Apple. But now, what's the consequence of this? What happens next? What are my options in this case?

  • WebDav issue with Mac OS X 10.5.3 onwards

    Hi, We upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and getting problem when uploading files (PUT) to a webdav server (the server is Apache running on a Windows environment). When we drag and drop on to a webdav folder using Finder we get a -36 error. When looking at the stack trace of the web server the problem is due to INVALID CRLF or some times getting the following error. Both the stack point to error when copying the stream. When googled found that it is because the Mac changed to Transfer-Encoding to 'Chunked' ClientAbortException: java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: socket write error at   • F# Powerpack's Metadata doesn't recognize FSharp.Core as an F# library

    Here's my test code to isolate the problem: open Microsoft.FSharp.Metadata [<EntryPoint>] let main args = let core = FSharpAssembly.FromFile @"C:\Program Files\FSharp-2.0.0.0\\bin\FSharp.Core.dll" let core2 = FSharpAssembly.FSharpLibrary let core3 = System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies() |> Seq.find (fun a -> a.FullName.Contains "Core") |> FSharpAssembly.FromAssembly core.Entities |> Seq.iter (printfn "%A") 0 All three lets should give me the same FSharpAssembly. Instead, all 3 throw an exception that FSharp.Core is not an F# assembly (details below, re-formatted for readability). Two more clues: Using the core3 method, I get the same error for the test F# assembly itself I don't get the error at FSI after doing #r "@C:\Program Files...\FSharp.Powerpack.Metadata.dll". Any ideas? I'm using Visual Studio 2008, F# 2.0 and F# Powerpack 2.0.0.0 (May 20, 2010) release on an oldish XP VM, I think it's updated to SP3 though. (I got the error this morning with Powerpack 1.9.9.9, so I upgraded to 2.0.0.0. I thought that if 1.9.9.9 doesn't recognise F#'s 2.0.0.0's assemblies, then maybe bugfixes in Powerpack 2.0.0.0 would help.)   • WiFi connected to router, but no internet connection

    I just got a new notebook, a ThinkPad Edge E530, and installed Ubuntu on it. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu. On the same laptop, running Windows 7, the Wi-Fi connection works fine. Ethernet connection works both on Win7 and on Ubuntu. Only Wi-Fi on Ubuntu does not work; it connects to the Wi-Fi access point but I don't have Internet access. My wireless card is Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230. What can fix the problem?   • Testifying rasing net.core.somaxconn can make a difference

    I got into an argument on the net.core.somaxconn parameter: I was told that it will not make any difference if we change the default 128. I believed this might be enough proof: "If the backlog argument is greater than the value in /proc/sys/net/core/somaxconn, then it is silently truncated to that value" http://linux.die.net/man/2/listen but it's not. Does anyone know a method to testify this with two machines, sitting on a Gbit network? The best would be against MySQL, LVS, apache2 ( 2.2 ), memcached.

  • DVD not detected?

    As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject. Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago. Edit: since I am able to boot from CD, can I safely assume the issue is not a hardware issue?   • Ubuntu 12.10 graphics does not work properly

    My graphic on ubuntu 12.10 does not work as well as on 12.04. After upgrade I installed driver sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current for my Nvidia 450 GTS graphics card. But sometimes I see slight lag on my videos played in VLC player, some of desktop and window effects are lagging, sometimes I can see an indescribable souce of pixels on my screen at the start of ubuntu and so on. I feel difference between 12.04 and 12.10 in favour of former version.   • Ivy bridge i3 recognized as Xeon e3-1200

    The situation: I've got a Ivy bridge i3 3225 which is being recognized as a Xeon e3-1200 series cpu by Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. The problem: cpu fan makes more noise than necessary (under dual-boot Win8 the fans are off), cannot install the intel graphics drivers from 01.org. Goals: - find a fix for the load fans could be they are not CPU related, I've tried some fan controller packages, but they made no difference. - get the intel graphics to install (this now fails as xeon cpu's are not supported, I got the package working on a i5 laptop) - get to know some more about how hardware recognition works Tried so far: - a reinstall of Ubuntu, but it was recognized again as a Xeon cpu. - different fan control packages, but they either do not recognized the fans, or just keep fan speed to high.     So i go to system settings in Ubuntu 12.10 and i want to install my drivers but under the Additional Drivers, My LAN doesnt work, Doesnt even pick up that im plugged in threw Ethernet cord. I have a GTX 670M with 3Gb GDDR5 for a video card and would like to use that. Just need help, pretty new to Ubuntu.   • Multiple Graphics Cards on Fedora 15 (Gnome 3)

    I have the (delightful) misfortune of having 3 graphics cards. They are XFX Radeon 5750s. Each drives 2 monitors via dvi. I am having a really hard time getting these running on fedora 15 (gnome 3). So my setup is 3 columns of 2 monitors (the upper monitor is mounted upside down in each column to reduce the bezel between monitors). When the (graphical) login screen comes up all 6 have the blue stripey background that must be the default, but then when I login, things get interesting. In the xorg.conf below, you will see only 2 of the screens in the serverlayout while the other 4 are commented out. Logging in with only 2 of the screens active works well (and it even remembers that the top one is upside down, and should be considered above the lower, i am not sure where it stores this info, but i set it using the graphical "Displays" settings) However, as soon as I uncomment a third screen, or more, it gives me an error message when I login. It's one of those friendly, less helpful messages (Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again). If i do not use an xorg.conf, then the "Displays" prefs pane shows only the two monitors on one of my graphics cards Thanks to anyone who can help me get going!     Hello.. My girlfriend have Macbook 10.6.3, the first plastic version. the screen broke an its at service store now. In the mean time, i have tried to restore from hers TM backup to my old macbook pro 10.6.3 (the first intel version). Everything seems to work out fine, but when its finish, it says reboot, but nothing happens. When i hold down the power button, powering down, and starts again, its come up with the grey roll down screen "you need to restart your machine again" in different languages. I have tried the restore procedure over again 2 times, and every time it ends up like this... Anyone have a suggestion what to do ? Thanks - Anders.

  • ubuntu 9.10 screen flickering problem on Thinkpad R31 with Intel 83830 Graphics

    I am trying to revitalize an old Thinkpad R31 that has the Intel 82830 graphics and only 256 MB of RAM. I have tried a Xubuntu 9.10 Live CD. After booting the screen blinks so much that it is practically unreadable. I have searched for updated IBM Thinkpad drivers but I only found drivers for Windows on the Thinkpad support web site. EDIT: I have changed the title and the description. It is not a problem of the drivers. It seems to be a problem with the kernel. See my own answer below.
