• Programming Challenges for a beginner

  I'm in an unusual situation. A colleague of mine wants to "learn programming" and, being a developer I have been tasked with teaching him "programming". Personally, I am self taught, and have never taught any sort of skill to anybody else before so I am not quite sure where to start. Also, I still have a heck of a lot to learn myself (although don't we all)! I write in C# but is C# a good language for a beginner? I was thinking that Visual Basic .Net would be a better starting point, so was considering getting him setup with Visual Studio Express 2010, teaching him a few basics (variables, functions, classes etc) then finding some programming challenges and asking him to work through these. Does anybody have a good source of these sorts of challenges? Also is this a good strategy? Finally, what are your experiences of teaching programming to somebody else and what advice would you give?

• A Change of Seasons...

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! • What can I do to encourage teams to lighten up? [closed]

  I work with a geographically distributed team (different timezones) with people from various cultures and background. Some of us have never met each other in person but we communicate with each other over phone, chat and email almost on an hourly basis. Most of our meetings and discussions are dead serious and boring. What's worse, any attempt at humor is not very well received because of cultural differences. I feel that we are all taking our work a bit too seriously. We don't shy away from painful arguments, nasty emails and heated discussions when things go wrong but never attempt to develop camaraderie or friendships in better times. I would like to know your experiences with such situations and what, if anything, did you do to lighten things up at workplace.

• How many hours can you be really productive per day? How?

  I find that I'm having a great deal of trouble staying alert 8 hours per day. I've heard of people who've negotiated work contracts of just 4 hours/day, arguing that they won't be able to do much more in eight hours. I am often overwhelmed with drowsiness, boredom, distraction. Some days, I seem to blaze through eight hours in a furious explosion of productivity; other days, I hardly get anything done at all. Most days, it's somewhere in between, and I feel bad for wasting a lot of time because I can't muster the concentration to be my best throughout much of the day. I'd like to hear your experiences (tell me I'm not alone!), and, if found, your solutions to this dilemma. Are you productive 8 hours/day almost every day? How?

I have worked with different apps and therefore I do have some experience with the Android SDK Platform in general.   Past my day job, I also have the privilege of being Vice President and Member of the Board of the OpenWonderland Foundation (Formerly Project Wonderland for ex-Sun folks). It's great to see the progress Wonderland is making as the platform-of-choice for open source collaborative 3-D virtual worlds built in Java. The upcoming and first european IE Summit in Madrid will show a number of projects and innovations for virtual and game-based learning. I also dropped Ultan a note after learning about the Gamification of Oracle Apps to see if collaborating with kids and schools is an area we can work together on to improve kids engagement and learning experiences online. • Asking potential developers to draw UML diagrams during the interview

  Our interview process currently consists of several coding questions, technical questions and experiences at their current and previous jobs. Coding questions are typically a single method that does something (Think of it as fizzbuzz or reverse a string kind of question) We are planning on introducing an additional step where we give them a business problem and ask them to draw a flowchart, activity, class or a sequence diagram. We feel that our current interview process does not let us evaluate the candidate's thinking at a higher level (which is relevant for architect/senior level positions). To give you some context, we are a mid size software company with around 30 developers in the team. If you have this step in your interview process, how has it improved your interviewing veracity? If not, what else has helped you evaluate the candidates better from a technical perspective.

• When it's more productive to build your own framework than using an existing one?

  I would like to know why you decided to build your own framework in your company. By framework, I don't mean few libraries you use often. I mean a specific way of building applications on top of it, with base classes, convention, etc. So why did you built your own framework? How could you justify that to the person that employs you. Have you measure the positive and negative impact of it? Regarding your experiences, did you notice that in some case a company framework produced real benefits, or on the other hand, increased costs of development (learning curve, debugging, maintenance, ...)?

• Can I use the test suite from an open source project to verify that my own 'compatible library' is compatible?

  The question Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project? makes me wonder what would be considered a clean-room implementation in the era of open source projects. Hypothetically, if I were to develop a library which duplicates the publicly documented interface of an open-source library, without ever looking at the source code for that library, could that code ever be considered a derivative work? Obviously it would need the same class hierarchy and method signatures, so that it could be a drop-in replacement - could that in itself, be enough to provoke a copyright claim? What about if I used the test suite of the open source project to verify whether my clean implementation behaved in the same way as the original library? Would using the test suite be enough to dirty my clean code? As should be expected from a question like this, I am not looking for specific legal advice, but looking to document experiences people may have had with this sort of issue.
