• Merging datasets based on 2 variables in SAS.

  Hye Guys, my question is the following, i'm working with different databases, all contain information about 1000+ companies, a company is defined by its ticker code (the short version of the name( Ford as F) usually seen on stock quotation boards). Aside from the ticker code to merge on I also have to merge on the time, I used month as a count variable throughout my time series. The final purpose is to have a regression in the kind of Y(jt) = c + X(jt) +X1(jt) etc with j = company (ticker) and t = time (month). So imagine I have 2 databases, one which is the base database with variables such as Tickers, months, beta's of a company (risk measure) etc and a second database which has an extra variable (let's say market capitalisation). What I want to do then is to merge these 2 databases based on the ticker and the month. Example: Base database: Ticker __ Month __ Betas AA __ 4 __ 1.2 BB __ 8 __ 1.18 Second database: Ticker __ Month __ MCAP AA __ 4 __ 8542 BB __ 6 __ 1245 Then after merge I would like to have something like this: Ticker __ Month _ Betas ___ MCAP AA __ 4 _ 1.2 ___ 8542 So all observations that do not match BOTH date and ticker have to be dropped, I'm sure this is possible, just can't find the right type of code. • ASP.NET MVC: Returning a view with querystring in tact

  I'm creating a messaging web app in ASP.NET and are having some problems when displaying an error message to the user if they go to send a message and there is something wrong. A user can look through profiles of people and then click, 'send a message'. The following action is called (url is /message/create?to=username) and shows them a page where they can enter their message and send it: public ActionResult Create(string to) { ViewData["recipientUsername"] = to; return View(); } On the page that is displayed, the username is entered in to a hidden input field. When the user clicks 'send': [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create(string message, string to) { try { //do message stuff that errors out } catch { ModelState.AddModelErrors(message.GetRuleViolations()); //adding errors to modelstate } return View(); } So now the error message is displayed to the user fine, however the url is changed in that it no longer has the querystring (/message/create). Again, this would be fine except that when the user clicks the refresh button, the page errors out as the Create action no longer has the 'to' parameter. So I'm guessing that I need to maintain my querystring somehow. Is there any way to do this or do I need to use a different method altogether?

• OpenCV shape matching

  I'm new to OpenCV (am actually using Emgu CV C# wrapper) and am attempting to do some object detection. I'm attempting to determine if an object matches a predefined set of objects (that I will have to define). The background is well lit and does not move. My objects that I am starting with are bottles and cans. My current approach is: Do absDiff with a previously taken background image to separate the background. Then dilate 4x to make the lighter areas (in labels) shrink. Then I do a binary threshold to get a big blog, followed by finding contours in this image. I then take the largest contour and draw it, which becomes my shape to either save to the accepted set or compare with the accepted set. Currently I'm using cvMatchShapes, but the double return value seems to vary widely. I'm guessing it is because it doesn't take into account rotation. Is this approach a good one? It isn't working well for glass bottles since the edges are hard to find... I've read about haar classifiers, but thinking that might be overkill for my task.

• value of Identity column returning null when retrieved by value in dataGridView

  Greetings. I'm working on a windows forms application that interacts with a previously created SQL database. Specifically, I'm working on implementing an "UPDATE" query. for (int i = 0; i < dataGridView1.RowCount; i++) { string firstName = (string)dataGridView1.Rows[i].Cells[0].Value; string lastName = (string)dataGridView1.Rows[i].Cells[1].Value; string phoneNo = (string)dataGridView1.Rows[i].Cells[2].Value; short idVal = (short)dataGridView1.Rows[i].Cells[3].Value; this.contactInfoTableAdapter.UpdateQuery(firstName, lastName, phoneNo, idVal); } The dataGridView has 4 columns, First Name, Last Name, Phone Number, and ID (which was created as an identity column when I initially formed the table in SQL). When I try to run this code, the three strings are returned properly, but dataGridView1.Rows[i].Cells[3].Value is returning "null". I'm guessing this is because it was created as an identity column rather than a normal column. What's a better way to retrieve the relevant ID value for my UpdateQuery?

  I am learning QT and trying out some examples. I am trying to make a dialog that disappears a label when a button is pressed and makes it appear when the same button is pressed again. Whenever i press the test button nothing happens. But if i change the signal slot connections as QObject::connect(testButton, SIGNAL(clicked(bool)), testLabel, SLOT(setVisible(bool))); it makes the label disappear. So, why it is not working with signal "toggled". What i am guessing is, it is not able to find that signal. Can you guys throw some light?

• Time complexity with bit cost

  I think I might have completely misunderstood bit cost analysis. I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept of studying an algorithm's time complexity with respect to bit cost (instead of unit cost) and it seems to be impossible to find anything on the subject. Is this considered to be so trivial that no one ever needs to have it explained to them? Well I do. (Also, there doesn't even seem to be anything on wikipedia which is very unusual). Here's what I have so far: The bit cost of multiplication and division of two numbers with n bits is O(n^2) (in general?) So, for example: int number = 2; for(int i = 0; i < n; i++ ){ number = i*i; } has a time complexity with respect to bit cost of O(n^3), because it does n multiplications (right?) But in a regular scenario we want the time complexity with respect to the input. So, how does that scenario work? The number of bits in i could be considered a constant. Which would make the time complexity the same as with unit cost except with a bigger constant (and both would be linear). Also, I'm guessing addition and subtraction can be done in constant time, O(1). Couldn't find any info on it but it seems reasonable since it's one assembler operation.

  I'm running into an issue with private setters when using NHibernate and lazy-loading. Let's say I have a class that looks like this: public class User { public int Foo {get; private set;} public IList<User> Friends {get; set;} public void SetFirstFriendsFoo() { // This line works in a unit test but does nothing during a live run with // a lazy-loaded Friends list Users(0).Foo = 1; } } The SetFirstFriendsFoo call works perfectly inside a unit test (as it should since objects of the same type can access each others private properties). However, when running live with a lazy-loaded Friends list, the SetFirstFriendsFoo call silently fails. I'm guessing the reason for this is because at run-time, the Users(0).Foo object is no longer of type User, but of a proxy class that inherits from User since the Friends list was lazy-loaded. My question is this: shouldn't this generate a run-time exception? You get compile-time exceptions if you try to access another class's private properties, but when you run into a situation like this is looks like the app just ignores you and continues along its way.

• iPhone - Memory Management - Using Leaks tool and getting some bizarre readings.

  Hey all, putting the finishing touches on a project of mine so I figured I would run through it and see if and where I had any memory leaks. Found and fixed most of them but there are a couple of things regarding the memory leaks and object alloc that I am confused about. 1) There are 2 memory leaks that do not show me as responsible. There are 8 leaks attributed to AudioToolbox with the function being RegisterEmbeddedAudioCodecs(). This accounts for about 1.5 kb of leaks. The other one is detected immediately when the app begins. Core Graphics is responsible with the extra info being open_handle_to_dylib_path. For the audio leak I have looked over my audio code and to me it seems ok. self.musicPlayer = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:songFilePath] error:NULL]; [musicPlayer prepareToPlay]; [musicPlayer play] is called later on in a function. 2) Is it normal for there to be a spike in Object Allocation whenever a new view or controller is presented? My total memory usage is very, very low except for whenever I present a view controller. It spikes then immediately goes back down. I am guessing that this is just the phone handling all the information for switching or something. Blegh. Wall of text. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps! =)

• how do i execute a stored procedure with vici coolstorage?

  I'm building an app around Vici Coolstorage (asp.net version). I have my classes created and mapped to my database tables and can pull a list of all records fine. I've written a stored procedure where the query jumps across databases that aren't mapped with Coolstorage, however, the fields in the query result map directly to one of my classes. The procedure takes 1 parameter. so 2 questions here: how do i execute the stored procedure? i'm doing this CSParameterCollection collection = new CSParameterCollection(); collection.Add("@id", id); var result = Vici.CoolStorage.CSDatabase.RunQuery("procedurename", collection); and getting the exception "Incorrect syntax near 'procedurename'." (i'm guessing this is because it's trying to execute it as text rather than a procedure?) and also, since the class representing my table is defined as abstract, how do i specify that result should create a list of MyTable objects instead of generic or dynamic or whatever objects? if i try Vici.CoolStorage.CSDatabase.RunQuery<MyTable>(...) the compiler yells at me for it being an abstract class.

• Refresh a Div that has a Google ad inside it

  Hello all, I have a div that holds a google ad. My website is mostly AJAX and there is no need for a browser refresh. That means my ads will not refresh either, which isnt ideal, a user staring at one ad all day. So I wanted a way to refresh a particular div on a page. I found many solutions but they didnt work. For example, using JQuery's html function: $("#ads").html("google ad script here"); This managed to refresh the whole page no idea how. I can also make an AJAX request to a HTML page that contains the google ad but I am guessing it will have the same effect as the above attempt. I do not want to use iFrames. Is there any other option open to me? My pea brain can not think of anymore. :) Thanks you for any help. EDIT: It is allowed since I will be initiating the refresh only when a user clicks a link. A prime example is Yahoo Mail - their new AJAX mailbox uses this same method, when a user clicks a link then a new ad is shown.

• Android ScrollView jumps around when resized

  I have a ScrollView that contains an number of other views (TextViews, ImageViews, etc.). The ScrollView is taller than the screen. I have an AsyncTask that updates the children of the ScrollView based on an http response. I've discovered an interesting behavior that I can't figure out how to work around. If I set any of the children's visibilities to View.INVISIBLE as part of the AsyncTask.onPostExecute(), everything works fine. However, if I set any of the children's visibilities to View.GONE, the ScrollView jumps down from the top when onPostExecute() is called. Exactly how far seems to vary. I'm guessing that re-laying out the ScrollView is causing it to scroll away from the top for some reason. So the question is: is there a way to either prevent or work around this behavior? PS. Using ScrollView.jump(FOCUS_UP) as a workaround isn't ideal since that'll force the user to the top even if they had intended to scroll down. EDIT: Actually, I was wrong. The problem wasn't with a child view being marked gone, the problem was with a sibling view being marked gone and the ScrollView getting resized. My ScrollView is inside a LinearLayout that also contains a Button. When the button is set to GONE, the ScrollView gets resized to take up the available space, causing it to scroll away from the top. Different cause, still looking for a workaround though if possible.

  I'm stumped by this easy data problem. I'm using the Entity framework and have a database of products. My results page returns a paginated list of these products. Right now my results are ordered by the number of sales of each product, so my code looks like this: return Products.OrderByDescending(u => u.Sales.Count()); This returns an IQueryable dataset of my entities, sorted by the number of sales. I want my results page to show the rank of each product (in the dataset). My results should look like this: Page #1 1. Bananas 2. Apples 3. Coffee Page #2 4. Cookies 5. Ice Cream 6. Lettuce I'm expecting that I just want to add a column in my results using the SQL ROW_NUMBER variable...but I don't know how to add this column to my results datatable. My resulting page does contain a foreach loop, but since I'm using a paginated set I'm guessing using that number to fake a ranking number would NOT be the best approach. So my question is, how do I add a ROW_NUMBER column to my query results in this case?

• Getting started with massive data

  I'm a math guy and occasionally do some statistics/machine learning analysis consulting projects on the side. The data I have access to are usually on the smaller side, at most a couple hundred of megabytes (and almost always far less), but I want to learn more about handling and analyzing data on the gigabyte/terabyte scale. What do I need to know and what are some good resources to learn from? Hadoop/MapReduce is one obvious start. Is there a particular programming language I should pick up? (I primarily work now in Python, Ruby, R, and occasionally Java, but it seems like C and Clojure are often used for large-scale data analysis?) I'm not really familiar with the whole NoSQL movement, except that it's associated with big data. What's a good place to learn about it, and is there a particular implementation (Cassandra, CouchDB, etc.) I should get familiar with? Where can I learn about applying machine learning algorithms to huge amounts of data? My math background is mostly on the theory side, definitely not on the numerical or approximation side, and I'm guessing most of the standard ML algorithms don't really scale. Any other suggestions on things to learn would be great!

• slow SQL command

  I need to take some data from one table (and expand some XML on the way) and put it in another table. As the source table can have thousands or records which caused a timeout I decided to do it in batches of 100 records. The code is run on a schedule so doing it in batches works ok for the customer. If I have say 200 records in the source database the sproc runs very fast but if there are thousands it takes several minutes. I'm guessing that the "TOP 100" only takes the top 100 after it has gone through all the records. I need to change the whole code and sproc at some point as it doesn't scale but for now is there a quick fix to make this run quicker ? • Nginx for static files, Apache isn't working now...

  So anything that is a "static file" that exists will just be done with nginx. Otherwise, it should pass it off to Apache. Right now, static files are working correctly. However, if something is passed to apache and it's example.com or subdomain.example.com, apache just spits out the "Apache 2 Test Page" that you get if there's nothing there. • jQuery slideDown: Parent element doesn't expand?

  Hi, This issue occurs in our beloved Internet Explorer 7: I have a list of items, each with a hidden child div. When user clicks the "expand" button in any list item, the hidden div will expand downwards and push all content beneith it lower. This works just as it should in FF, Chrome, IE8 - but IE7 will not expand the parent element along with its children. This is noticeable because the top-most parent container has an absolutely positioned image at the very bottom (yea... rounded corners) - that doesn't get pushed down when the content expands. I'm guessing that's because of the absolute positioning... Just wondering whether I should attempt to code up some huge workaround in jQuery just for that (assuming I'm able to), or if this is a known issue of some sort. • Subsonic, child records, and collections

  Hi, I've been working with subsonic for a few weeks now, and it is working really well. However, I've just run into an issue with child objects with additional partial properties. Some of it is probably me just not understanding the .Net object lifecycle. I have an object - search. This has a few properties like permissions and stuff, and it links to a child table called search_options. In my Asp.Net app, it loops through these search options and creates controls. Then on postback, it grabs the values and assigns it back to a "value" property on the search_option. This value property is a simple string that's defined in a partial class. I then want to create a method on the search object, called PerformSearch. This then loops through the child search_options, and performs a custom query based on the "value" property. However, even though I assign the "value" property to the child search_option, when I access it later via the search.search_options collection, it is null. I'm guessing that maybe because it's accessing it in two different places, it performs another lazy load from the DB and the value is lost? Is there a way to tell the class that it's already loaded or something? or a way to access it so it's not reloaded from the DB?   I hope this makes sense: my business sells a website template, we currently have about 10,000 users. For various reasons that are unimportant to this question, I try to keep the file size of the zipped template we give them as small as possible. Because of this, I have taken a bunch of images and a couple of static files used by the template and moved them to external hosting. They are referenced by absolute URL in the css and markup, instead of shipping all of those images and files with every template. So, basically 10,000+ and growing users are requesting images and files from a third-party host. I don't use my own webhosting for this because I still kind of use a medium-cheap shared hosting for my website, and if it goes down, 10,000+ users are potentially effected. Currently I'm having the template directly access files inside of an open-source google-code project that I created for just this purpose. But, that seems like a bastardization of what a google-code repository is for, and plus, google code (i've found out) often spews 502 bad gateway errors for hours at a time. So, anyway, my question is: where is the right kind of place to host these? Obviously I'm willing to pay. My main needs are speed and uptime, since the images and files are being requested from thousands of different websites every day. Is this something that I should use Amazon S3 for? I'm guessing there's some kind of service exactly for this kind of need, but I'm at a loss to figure out what it is.

• What's the equivalent of gcc's -mwindows option in cmake?

  I'm following the tuto: http://zetcode.com/tutorials/gtktutorial/firstprograms/ It works but each time I double click on the executable,there is a console which I don't want it there. How do I get rid of that console? I tried this: add_executable(Cmd WIN32 cmd.c) But got this fatal error: MSVCRTD.lib(crtexew.obj) : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _WinMain@16 referenced in function ___tmainCRTStartup Cmd.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals While using gcc directly works: gcc -o Cmd cmd.c -mwindows .. I'm guessing it has something to do with the entry function: int main( int argc, char *argv[]),but why gcc works? How can I make it work with cmake? • How to set permissions or alter a git commit process when using local repositories

  I have a server that contains a central git repository and one of my co-worker's development environment. My co-worker's repository's origin is the central git repository and he pushes there when he has some code to share. Likewise, I develop locally and push to the central git repository when I have some code to share, so my repository's origin is also the central git repository. The issue is that I have the central git repository under a "git" user's home directory. So when I push I am actually SSH'ing into the the server as the "git" user. To be even more clear, my config has these lines: $ more .git/config [remote "origin"] fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/* url = [email protected]:fsg [branch "master"] remote = origin merge = refs/heads/master When I push, git handles this SSH + push seamlessly with I am guessing some sort of git shell. The issue is that when my coworker pushes, he is logged in as himself for a user and gets a bunch of crazy permission errors. Is there a typical way to solve this problem without opening up git's directories to a group? I think this will be problematic when I push and therefore overwrite the the repository and those permissions are reset. Thanks!

• NHibernate CreateSqlQuery and object graph

  Hello I'm a newbie to NHibernate. I'd like to make one sql query to the database using joins to my three tables. I have an Application with many Roles with many Users. I'm trying to get NHibernate to properly form the object graph starting with the Application object. For example, if I have 10 application records, I want 10 application objects and then those objects have their roles which have their users. What I'm getting however resembles a Cartesian product in which I have as many Application objects as total User records. I've looked into this quite a bit and am not sure if it is possible to form the application hierarchy correctly. I can only get the flattened objects to come back. It seems "maybe" possible as in my research I've read about "grouped joins" and "hierarchical output" with an upcoming LINQ to NHibernate release. Again though I'm a newbie. • General Address Parser for Freeform Text

  We have a program that displays map data (think Google Maps, but with much more interactivity and custom layers for our clients). We allow navigation via a set of combo boxes that prefill certain fields with a bunch of data (ie: Country: Canada, the Province field is filled in. Select Ontario, and a list of Counties/Regions is filled in. Select a county/region, and a city is filled in, etc...). While this guarantees accurate addresses, it's a pain for the users if they don't know where a street address or a city are located (ie, which county/region is kitchener in?). So we are looking at trying to do an address parser with a freeform text field. The user could enter something like this (similar to Google Maps, Bing Maps, etc...): 22 Main St, Kitchener, On And we could compartmentalize it into sections and do lookups on the data and get to the point they are looking for (or suggest alternatives). The problem with this is that how do we properly compartmentalize information? How do we break up the sections and find possible matches? I'm guessing we wouldn't be guaranteed that the user would enter data in a format we always expected (obviously). A follow up to this would be how to present the data if we don't find an exact match (or find multiple exact matches... two cities with the same street name in different counties, for example). We have a ton of data available in the mapping data (mapinfo tab format mostly). So we can do quick scans of street names, cities, states, etc. But I'm not sure about the best way to go about approaching this problem. Sure, using Google Maps would be nice, bue most of our clients are in closed in networks where outside access is not usually allowed and most aren't willing to rely on google maps (since it doesn't contain as much information as they need, such as custom map layers). They could, obviously, go to google and get the proper location then move to our software, but this would time consuming and speed of the process can be quite important.
