• No Sound from headphone jack

  I have DELL Inspiron N5110 laptop. Using windows 8. Recently I got an issue: The problem is, when I insert headphones and microphone into laptop, I get only microphone inserted notification. Laptop detects microphone But no headphones. In fact, It mutes sound from it's speakers. But no sound from headphones too: I tested headphones separately: they're working well. I also, reinstalled windows default sound drivers and IDT High Definition Audio drivers several times. No success! The final decision is: There is no sound from headphone jack in laptop. Any suggestions?

• SOCKS Proxy and HTTP Proxy considerations with push notifications

  I'm working with push notifications in a mobile application, and I've been informed that a lot of our clients may be using SOCKS or HTTP proxies for outbound and inbound traffic. Is there anything in particular I need to program or document with regards to deploying our mobile app in this sort of environment? If you were setting up and installing the application server, what guarantees would you want from the person that had programmed it? Specifically regarding push notification services for all four major OSes (APNS, GCM, BPS and MPNS). I've got absolutely no experience with proxies or server deployment, in case you couldn't tell :)

• Windows 2008 Server Unable to activate with other methods

  I'm trying to activate windows 2008 server SP2 today since the activation trial is done. I do not have an internet connection with this server so I can not activate online, and with the other servers in this farm I've been able to run the slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx and then it would open up the activate by phone method and we would just activate that way. I say again, I don't have an internet connection so I can not do the online activate. If I do the slui 4 it brings up the activation window but show me other ways to activate is still greyed out. I've disabled the NIC on this Hyper-V server and I still can not get the other way to activate to show up... Anyone have any ideas? This computer is one of my AD servers so.. it being in notification mode kind of sucks. Thanks.

  I'm running IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 Ultimate. I've installed PHP Version 5.2.14 using Microsoft Web Platform Installer. I've created a virtual directory and a file with which I can browse it and it returns all the PHP information just fine. I'm trying to install MantisBT, and when I copy all the file to my virtual directory and browse index.php I receive the following error detail: Error Summary HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred.   I have the following problem with a software that should do mail notification for a biometric entry system: the software does currently only support SMTP over port 25 without TLS/SSL. Which is bad because port 25 is blocked in our network due spam reason and our mailserver only support TLS / SSL logins. so i need a solution to connect to a localhost smtp server which just relays to my ssl host on port 587. i know there is ssmtp for linux, but i need it for windows, because the server app for this biometric stuff only runs on windows... edit: i know there is the IIS SMTP Server, but maybe something different?

• Dummy SMTP server as a service

  Hello, I have a Windows Server 2008 machine with IIS installed which is hosting a webapp that is sending some notification mails once-in-a-while. What I'd like to do is to monitor the email sent by the application. For this I need a dummy SMTP server which intercepts messages but won't send them further but save them locally on the hard disk.I've already found some of them like Papercut, SMTP4Dev. The problem with these that I have to be logged on the server all the time which is not suitable because the server has only 2+1 TS connections. I like to run a program like these as a windows service and check the mails when I need them. Any suggestion is much appreciated. Best Regards,Levente Rog

• Mail sent from local Postfix marked as "possible phishing" in Outlook

  Hi folks, Sorry for the newbie question--this is not my area of expertise by a long shot. I work at a small development shop and we finally got around to doing code reviews. (Yay!) I set up an instance of Review Board -- an open-source code review tool -- on one of our local servers but it doesn't seem to like talking to our hosted Exchange server to send notification emails. I decided to just install Postfix on that same box and send mail from localhost, which is working much more reliably, but Outlook disables all links in the email announcements and marks it as possible phishing. What is making these emails look suspicious and what can I change? Would the best thing be to figure out how to relay to Exchange from Postfix? Thanks!

  I am using VSTS 2008 + C# + .Net 3.5 + IIS 7.0. I have created a new web site and put an html file into the directory. And when I use browse function in IIS manager to browse the html file, I met with the following error, any ideas what is wrong?   I have multiple servers in WEB cluster (identical configuration for all of them, despite the IP) How do you deploy changes in configs on multile servers? I make the new config, then create config per every server (placing correct IP), and next: upload them on every server, replacing old ones (rsync over ssh) set on every server a job which reloads webserver at the same time (servers use ntp). - this done by issuing commands by script (to save time for logging in) before adding a job for server reload - there's checksum test of the config on the server) - an a notification in case of fail How do you see such method? What should be the "professional way :) ? (I don't say my way doesn't work... it works and saves my time not used for logging on every webserver.) Regards,

• After upgrade to Windows 8.1, no Skydrive icon in task bar

  I upgraded to 8.1 and now I don't see the SkyDrive icon in the task bar, nor the green light under it indicating the my computer is communicating with SkyDrive. When I go into Control Panel |..|Notification Area Icons, SkyDrive is listed and noted as Up to date. However even though I mark it to Show Icons and Notifications I don't see any icon in the taskbar. Is it supposed to be this way, or do I have a problem? I kind of got used to that little green synchronizing indicator giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

• Setting up Amazon Cloudwatch to get an alert when you server is down

  I have an instance running on Amazon EC2 that I turned into a webserver. Now I have been looking at cloudwatch, but I do not know if it is the correct tool for the job. Basically I want to get informed when the server is down, for whatever reason. Maybe the server got hacked, or the server shut down for whatever reason, I want to get a notification on that. I have enabled clouwatch, and tried to set up a alert, but I only see things like network in-out or cpu usage, an d metrix. Now I do not know if these will do the trick.

• Backlight dimming don't work

  My Packard Bell EasyNote TS11HR notebook does not have an option for dimming the display backlight. At night, my eyes begin to hurt because of the strong light from the screen. My laptop is 2-3 months old and I am sure it has worked before. When I click on the battery icon in the notification area, it says in my language (Danish): "the setting for light does possibly reduce the life of the battery". However, I cannot dim the backlight. I have tried downloading programs for dimming the screen but they only make the screen darker, instead of dimming the backlight. I have tried updating my drivers and looking in the BIOS for a setting. I also plan to use an Ubuntu LiveCD to try controlling it. As of now though, the backlight is locked at maximum. Any ideas?

• Connecte RemoteApp to Exising Session

  Due to the slightly retardedness of an app I've got to run, I've got a server auto logging in on boot with the app on auto start. Remote desktop at my leisure to check on its status, etc. Gross, but it works. Now I've tried out RemoteApp which seems to work ok (ie. remotes the notification icon, balloons...) except for the fact that it creates a new session (and therefore instance of my app) - this confuses the heck out of app and it means that if I was using 'full' remote desktop I lose all my state. "Restrict each user to a single session" doesn't work. IIRC "Windows XP Mode" uses RemoteApp and it doesn't seem to have any trouble switching between modes. So how can I connect to a running app?

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled.   Hello, I'm system administrator in online store. We send several emails to our clients after purchase: confirmation, invoice and sale notification to our staff. Recently we got most of emails bounced back and some bounces describes a reason as greylisting, others - just general failure. It is ruining our business because clients are calling that they didn't get the emails with confirmation and invoices. How to get off greylisting, and to not be greylisted? What actions should we do? • How can I display host name on windows desktop

  I do a lot of work on Windows Server 2008 remote desktops and often lose track of which host I am currently logged on to. Is there a way of displaying (without installing any non-standard apps) the host name or IP address of the host I am connected to in either the wallpaper or the notification area? I tried creating files in the desktop with the name of the machine - but my roaming profile shows the same set of desktop files on every machine, so that was scuppered. Duh! In shell windows this is easy: just set the prompt to display the host name. Surely there is a simple way of doing the same for the graphical desktop.

• Git completion __git_ps1 really slow on Mac

  I've had __git_ps1 in my bash prompt for a while, but just recently (I noticed it after I did some messing around with Homebrew and rbenv), it has slowed down my prompt horribly. When I'm in a git directory I have to wait 3-4 seconds after every command for the prompt to appear. If I just mash return and watch the Activity Monitor, it shows that distnoted and Finder are using more CPU than normal during the delay. Could something git-completion.bash is doing be triggering a notification to Finder? Maybe it involves folder actions or something?

  I have a windows 8 hp dual booting ubuntu. When i log onto windows i cant get on the internet... But skype and other applications can just now webpages in a browser what so ever (this is on windows 8). But on ubuntu i have no internet issues at all. From what i see right now its only the browsers in windows 8 that cant get the internet, and ive tried all the browsers i had (chrome, ie, firefox) and they cant connect but in the win8 notification area it says im connected. I can even ping via cmd. HELP! Thanks. Whats not working is that i cant get access the internet through the windows 8 broswer.

• Files in Windows 7 case-insensitive?

  I've got 2 files on a Unix server which I tried to ftp (using FileZilla) to a Windows 7 machine - tdda.png and TDDA.png - initially FileZilla complained that TDDA.png was already a file when I tried to transfer TDDA.png, so I renamed it to TDDA2.png before transferring it. I then tried to rename it back to TDDA.png in Windows and get the notification: "Do you want to rename 'TDDA2.png to ''tdda(2).png? There is already a file with the same name in this location" Has Windows 7 got some case-insensitivity built in somewhere? I've never experienced it with any other version of Windows...

• CF64 on Server 2008x64 breaks pretty much everything else, how to fix?

  I need to forward e-mails to different mail accounts by different conditions. The aim is to create mail notification scheme for my company. I'd like to setup server on dedicated mail domain for it. Is there any software that helps to get my aim (Linux)? Examples: 1) forward all e-mail sent to [email protected] to x@x, y@y, z@z (no conditions) 2) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[finance]' to a@b and b@b 3) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[fault]' to s@s and s2@s. Receivers' domains are different. P.S. Now we use Gmail filters to get this functionality, but it's unstable and hard to maintain.

• Why does it sometimes take over a minute for Apache2.2 to serve a static page?

Most of the time there is no load on the server, but we have a notification program on 3400 PC's that can request a small web page that plays a 64KB .wav file. When an event occurs those 3400 PC's all request the web page over the course of 3 minutes. On a few machine we saw the browser sit in the "connecting" state for a little over a minute before the page painted. What is happening, and how can we speed this up?

• MySQL keeps crashing due to bug

  So about a week ago, I finally figured out what was causing my server to continually crash. After reviewing my mysqld.log I keep seeing this same error, 101210 5:04:32 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 Here is a link to the bug report, http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=35346 someone recommend that you set the max_join_size vaule in my.cnf to 4M, and I did. I assumed this fixed the issue, and it was working for about a week with no issues until today... I checked MySQL and the same error is now back, 101216 06:35:25 mysqld restarted 101216 6:38:15 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 101216 6:38:15 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 101216 06:40:42 mysqld ended Anyone know how I can really fix this issue? I can't keep having mysql crash like this. EDIT: I forgot to mention every time this happens I get an email from linode staying I have a high disk io rate Your Linode, has exceeded the notification threshold (1000) for disk io rate by averaging 2483.68 for the last 2 hours.
