• Dual Boot Win8 and Win7 - Win 7 fails while booting

  Below are my dual boot settings. Both are on different partitions, default is Windows 8. Both were working fine. There are multiple users of this machine, few run 8 while few 7. All 7's users are novice and they use Internet only. I frequently update Windows 8 but not 7. Few weeks ago, Win 7 stopped booting. Machine gets restarted while booting with 7(Windows 7 start up glowing-Win-logo-screen does not appear) and the 8's loader reappears. Win 7's partition still exists and contains Windows folder What steps should i take to check the problem?

• How to set up a PC which can be booted from Linux AND Windows?

  Our PC was running Windows XP up to know. It has become incredibly slow and I'm considering switching to Linux (Ubuntu?!) as a fresh OS. However, there are some applications we rarely use which run only on Windows and I also want to have the possibility to easily go back to the old system, if I should find during testing linux, that anything is missing or not available. So the idea is to install Linux on a new (second) hard drive and use the existing Windows XP from a virtual machine (converted by Paragon Drive Backup) in the transition time. We have a lot of data on the PC, tens of GBs of Photos (managed by Picasa), ... My questions: What could be the best way to setup the new hard drive? (Partitions) I assume that I can not access the Linux data from Windows but I could access (read/write) windows drives from Linux? Does anyone know good tutorials for this use case? What other things might I have to consider for transition Windows-Linux?

• Server 2012 Storage Pools, Raid Controller... can the Storage Pool deal with it?

  Before trying it out - I don't find any documentation. Given that Storage Pools have serious performance problems with parity, and do not rebalance data at the moment when you add discs, my preferred way to use them would be as think provisioned space, ISCSI targets - with every "Pool" running against 1 RAID that comes from a Raid controller (who also introduces SSD read and write caching - another thing missing from Storage Pools). The main question is - how does a Storage Pool handle the change in the underlying disc that can happen? I mostly talk about OCE (Online Capacity Expansion), where a disc after an expansion suddenly reports a larger space. Standard Windows allows you to use this additional space (and expand the partitions). How does a storage pool handle it?

• if a usb pen drive has 64349 cylinders, is it damaged?

  I have a 4Gb USB pen drive that I'm trying to format with FAT32. When I run fdisk, it gives me this message: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 64349. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) I've tried deleting the partition table, creating new partitions, etc, but they never work. Sometimes I can write to the drive the first time I use it after formatting it, but then it becomes read-only in both Windows and Linux. I've tried this on multiple computers. Am I doing something wrong, or is the drive reporting an incorrect number of cylinders? Is the drive itself likely to be corrupted, and is there anyway to fix this under Windows Vista or Linux? • Upgrade no raid server to raid

  I have just learned that our PDC has a single drive with 2 partitions. I also know that this drive has bad blocks as recorded in the event log. What I would like to do is to convert this to a RAID solution with a nice balance between economy and performance. I will admit that I have only configured servers with RAID from scratch, and have no experience upgrading an existing system into a RAID system. In fact, I'm not sure it is even possible. Since this is the PDC for 350+ workstations downtime is important. I'd like to hear from other System Administators how they would tackle this and their recommendations for all devices. At this time it seems to me that I can replace the existing drive and then restore from backup or install a controller, drives, configure the RAID an basically start from scratch. I'd like to encrypt part of one partition, leaving the rest of the partition accessible. I would very much like to avoid programs like Norton partition magic (which resize/split partitions), because every time I used them I had problems with the data stored. Question Is there any way/builtin alternative/3rd party app that integrates with windows login to encrypt one subset of a partition? EDIT I heard horror stories about EFS, which is why I don't want to use it. Some highlights from that article: In fact I’ve only used EFS twice in the last ten years on my own computers and on both occasions I’ve lost files and documents. I therefore cannot recommend you ever encrypt your files with this Windows feature. Unfortunately, because of incompatibilities with some differing versions of EFS files can end up scrambled and unrecoverable.

• Can I format a USB key in GUID mode in windows 7 to make it Mac OSX boot friendly?

  I have a macbookpro that wont boot properly. I've tried resetting the PRAM (holding down option - alt - P - R), but it doesn't work, it gets halfway through the boot process and says "You need to restart your computer" in several languages. Recently I downloaded a USB Key compatible Linux OS. This USB Key works as a boot loader on Windows machines, but on OSX it can only find the Harddrive partitions when I go into the boot loader menu (holding down Option on startup). I am assuming it is because it is formatted as FAT32, and not GUID Table. I believe my CD drive is also bust, it hasn't worked in a long time. I don't have another Mac computer, so is there a way I can format the USB key as GUID Partition from a windows 7 machine?

• Recover files after unsuccessful partitioning

  I wanted to install another Linux on my computer, so I tried to resize one of my NTFS partitions with Norton Partition Magic. It didn't complete successfully, showed some errors, said that the partition is not resized and that it's the same size like before. But when I rebooted my computer I couldn't open that partition anymore and I am also not able to mount it from Linux. So this is my question: I had very important data on that partition - can I recover it? I guess nothing's deleted; it's just something messed up so it's not usable, but can I get it back? Please reply if there's any possible way of doing this, thank you.

  I have set CFQ as the default I/O scheduler. I often get bad performance when I write data into a Flash device. This is resolved if I use deadline as the I/O scheduler for USB Flash devices. I can't always change the scheduler manually, right? I think writing udev rules is a good idea. Can someone please write rules for me? I want: When I plug in a USB device, detect the type of the device. If it is a portable USB hard disk, do nothing (I think if a device has more than one partitions, it always a portable hard disk. If it is a USB Flash device, set deadline as it's scheduler.

• Deleting a partition on dual boot

  I have split my C:\ physical disk into 3 seperate partitions: C, H, and K. C has my original OS and is the active partition, H has another OS (dual boot), and K has song files. I want to keep the other OS (Windows Server) and when I am in this OS, I can't delete C ("Windows cannot format this partition"). What is the best way for me to get rid of C, keep all the songs intact, and the Server OS partition, so I replace C with another OS, and then get rid of the original Windows Server OS (So revert the dual boot to a single boot).

  Hi, I'm trying to install windows 7 on my Macbook. I've created NTFS partition, but when i'm starting up Windows 7 installation, it says that i can't install windows on this partition, since drive already contains maximum amount of partitions with this filesystem type. I haven't heard of any limits on filesystems, but still i can't even format this drive from Win7 installer. I've found access to command line from win7 installation CD, but i can't find fdisk there to format. Do you have any idea on about how to deal with it?

• Repartition hard drive using Mac OS X, keep existing data

  I got a 1 TB disk a year or so ago and loaded it with some hundred of GB of data. I somehow neglected to check the file system, which turns out to be FAT-32 and thus too small for files bigger than 4 GB. So now I want to change it, without deleting the data. I thought I'd just make a new partition in the so far unused space. Then with the new partition, copy/move the data into the new partition, and then delete the old FAT-32 partition, and make the new partition bigger again... or just make a few more partitions. The critical step here is, can I make that new partition without ruining the data? The data should be fairly sequentially added to the start of the disk, but what do I know... so that's why I'm asking. Can I safely use Disk Utility for this? Any recommended file system?

• Infected Win XP disk not openable on a Vista computer

  How can I read a WinXP partioned disk that is infected and shows up on a USB connection to Win Vista computer as a single partition that Vista cannot see the contents? The XP computer HDD is partioned into 4 partitions. It became infected, and all attempts to clean it have failed. Applications begin to launch, but are then shut down by the infecting agent. Using a major Anti-virus Co. boot disk (which was unable to connect to the Web, probably because the infecting agent stopped it) with virus definitions dated after the disk became infected, the resultant scan showed no infection. I bought a USB cable to connect the IDE drive to my Vista computer, but when I open Win Explorer, it sees the disk, but does not show any contents. It indicates it is a single partition that is valid. However in all the ways I have tried it does not show drive contents. Any suggestions on what to do next?

• Cannot resize an ntfs (Windows Server 2k3r2) boot partition booting from gparted

  I am trying to use gparted to make my ntfs system/boot partition larger. I expanded the disk in ESX, providing an extra 60 GB or so of free space. I confirmed that this free space is available in gparted: However, when I try to go to "Move/Resize" the boot partition, there is no unallocated space for me to allocate. It will let me resize the "extended" (non-boot) partition, which makes me think the issue is that the partitions are not contiguous. If it's not obvious, I am no expert in partitioning/storage so any help is appreciated.

• WD Passport Won't Mount

  My WD Passport won't mount. However, it turns on when plugged into my macbook and doesn't make any strange noises. It took a small fall (just a few inches and it was on my couch) and I'm very concerned about physical damage. When I open up disk utility it shows the root 500 GB WD My Passport drive which seems to be OK when I verify it and repair it. However, the "External Hard Drive", the directory underneath the "500 GB WD My Passport drive" is grayed out. When I verify the External Hard Drive it says it needs to be rapaired. When I try and repair it it gives me the following message and does not seem to progress: "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." Is there hope for me recovering my data? I stupidly have important data on it that I don't have anywhere else.

• Why can't I install Ubuntu 10.04 on a system that already has Ubuntu 8.04?

  Ubuntu 10.04 is beautiful. I love it. I am dying to install it on my PC, alongside the existing Ubuntu 8.04 (from which I write this message right now). But... it won't let me! When I reach the partitioning stage (manual!) Ubuntu 10.04 sees my two HDDs as one RAID volume. It doesn't see all the partitions I already have in place in /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Even Windows 7 doesn't behave like this... (yes, I actually managed to install Windows 7 64-bit in dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu 8.04 on this same system). Note: GParted on Ubuntu 10.04 (live CD) sees the partition intended for Ubuntu 10.04 (/dev/sda4) perfectly, but is unable to format it. Any idea how to solve this problem?

  I am building a new computer and have already installed XP Pro on drive 1 partition 1. Drive 1 is a 500 gig SATA with 4 partitions (1 = 50 gig, 2 = 50 gig, 3 =200 gig, 4 = 200 gig). Drive 2 is a 160 gig SATA with 2 patitions (1 = 60 Gig, 2 = 100 gig). I would like to install win 7 on drive 2, partition 1 to dual boot with xp on drive 1, partition 1. As XP is already installed where wanted, is there anything I should know about installing win 7 on drive 2, partition 1 ? Thanks for any and all inputs. Rustee

• Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (TrueCrypt) Multi-boot Problems

  I have now been searching days for a solution but have found nothing. I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 with TrueCrypt as a multi-boot. It was working fine for a few weeks until I needed to reinstall Ubuntu. If I have the boot flag on the partition where Windows 7 is install (This is where the boot flags was when working before.), it boots fine in to Windows 7 but when pressing Esc it can't find grub2. If I have the boot flag on the partition where Ubuntu is install, it boots fine in to Ubuntu (by pressing Esc or typing the password) but unable to access Windows. I have tried reinstalling TrueCrypt Boot loader and repairing the header but it have no affect. My Partitions: sda1 - Windows 7 Recovery (GRUB2) sda2 - Windows 7 (TrueCrypt Boot Loader) sda3 - Ubuntu 10.10 (/) sda4 - Extended sda5 - Swap sda6 - Ubuntu (/home) Does anyone have any ideas? • Proper way to partition filesystem with Xen

  I'm coming from a vmware environment, wanting to play with Xen. I have a server with 2 x 500G SATA drives (no hardware RAID available, have to use software-based RAID1). My partitions are all RAID1 except for swap. I left a little over 400G for my VMs and I would like to use LVM for the disk images. For domU's swap, should I allocate that from the 400G or should that be coming from dom0's partition? I asked because I've seen numerous config options that shows either or.

  Does anyone know how to delete Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.6.4? Before answering: sudo rm -rf /whateverthetimemachineis does not work Disabling the ACL permissions first with sudo fsaclctl -p /whatever -d does not work, sudo: fsaclctl: command not found Use the delete all backup feature in Time Machine... this is slow as hell, would take days. Need a command line solution. No I don't want to reformat the drive, I have other content on it, and no don't say I should have separated on two partition or two drives, I did it this say since partitions cannot be dynamically changed, and two drives is annoying since, whats the point of having a big drive?... plus has no relation to the issue at hand. Already googlied for hours and read everything on Super User, nothing working. and all solutions are the first 4. Any clues?

  I have a 1 Tb USB external hard drive which I want to use to backup data from my home and office desktops (both running Linux). Should I format the drive (possibly split into a few partitions) as vfat or ext3? I don't anticipate using the drive with Windows very often so this is not a primary concern. The main thing holding me back from just using ext3 is the problems you can have when two different users (home and work accounts) try to access each others data. Is there any way to mount an ext3 drive with user id mapping?

• My computer won't go into standby or hibernate

  Hi. I have a problem that I first noticed yesterday. Whenever I would press the half moon standby button on my keyboard, my computer would go to sleep. I also have a shortcut on my desktop configured to put my computer into hibernate. But now whenever I try to put my pc in sleep or hibernate mode, my monitor goes black for a few seconds but then comes back on at the login screen. I haven't installed or changed anything other than create a couple logical partitions in the hfs+ filesystem. (still in the process of trying to triple-boot) Any help would be great, but for now I'm going to bed. Will check back in the morning.

  Can I add a SATA drive to a Windows 7 machine which is in standby mode? The hardware supports hot-plug. Could pulling the drive out while in standby corrupt the data on the drive (unflushed caches, ...)? Does Windows flush before standing by? How about swapping a drive with another drive of different kind (SSD - mechanical disk) and size, also while in stand-by. Could the OS when waking up believe that the old drive is still there, and write to it and thus corrupt it, since the new one has different partitions and data?

• Development environment clean installation

  Hi there! I'm about to install a new and clean development environment. To accomplish that, I would like a Windows operating system (possibly Windows 7) and a Ubuntu one (possibly the most recent, 10.04). To allow sharing data between the two operating systems, I'm thinking to create a partition (workspace, for example) with using NTFS to format it and that be automatically mounted by Ubuntu.
