    This is similar to, but not the same as, http://serverfault.com/questions/1721/is-wireless-wake-on-lan-possible. I know it is supposed to be possible. The question is, how do I do whatever the AirPort Basestation will do? All I can find so far is that supposedly I need to send something with Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WMM): Basically, I want to be able to wake up my Mac Mini remotely, probably using my Linux laptop. Does anyone know of a tool to do this? Basic Wake on LAN tools do not seem to be the right thing. I don't need the Sleep Proxy Service bit, because I already know the MAC address of the system I want to wake up.

    Hi all, I want to ask about software design. I have a task, the view controller handles UI event for calling a model manger to perform that task. After finishing, the model manager will callback to update the view. There have also other views who care about that task, and also want to update its own view when that task is finished. So I register a Notification for that task in each views. The problem is defining where should I send Notification, in Model manager or in the View who handles event and receives the callback from Model manager? What is better design? Shoud the model care about send this "common" task, or shoud the view? Thanks

    Hello, I am trying to send something to serial port (r232) with PHP. I am using this class: http://www.phpclasses.org/browse/package/3679.html The problem is that I am allowed to send only 1 byte. But if I send something like "1", I am actually sending 49 (ASCII for 1). Instead of send("1"), I tried with send(1) but it is no good, because this is integer which has 2 bytes. So is there a way to send a "real" char, not ASCII equivalent?

FTPS, as it seems to perform better than SFTP The ability to send KeepAlive commands to the FTPS control port No passwords sent on the command line...sorry, curl Number 4, above, is critical: we have set KeepAlive in some other clients (e.g., CoreFTP LE) but we seem to have some routing equipment in the server environment which drops our connection when transferring a 7GB+ file. We have also set passive mode and "resume transfer" functionality seems currently broken with this secure file transport server...so we need to download the file in one go. What FTPS clients might meet our needs?

  • How can I send an email from Mail.app to Outlook with an attachment that does not embed into the email body?

    I'm using Mail.app (on Mac OS X 10.6) and when I send an email to users on PC Outlook, with an attached image, they get the email as an image embedded into the body, not as an attachement. I even tried clicking "view as icon" before sending the attachment from Macmail, but that made no difference. I also tried this myself, sending from Mail.app over to my PC's Outlook, and I do get that same problem. In Outlook the image is not coming through as an attachment, but as an image embedded into the body of the email. The reason this is an issue primarily is because the user is then unable to click "save as" and has to actually copy and paste it into some other program, which means the file is converted from jpg or png to the bmp format. But beyond that, most of my recipients don't even know how to copy and paste it into another program to save it that way anyway. They need the "save attachment as" functionality.

    Over the connections that most people in the USA have in their homes, what is the approximate length of time to send a list of 200,000 integers from a client's browser to an internet sever (say Google app engine)? Does it change much if the data is sent from an iPhone? How does the length of time increase as the size of the integer list increases (say with a list of a million integers) ? Context: I wasn't sure if I should write code to do some simple computations and sorting of such lists for the browser in javascript or for the server in python, so I wanted to explore this issue of how long it takes to send the output data from a browser to a server over the web in order to help me decide where (client's browser or app engine server) is the best place for such computations to be processed.

    This is a tricky one - and I've always relied on techniques such as permission-based emails (i.e. only sending to people you have permission to send to) and not using blatantly spamish terminology. Of late, some of the emails I send out programmatically have started being shuffled into people's spam folder automatically - and I'm wondering what i can do about it. This is despite the fact that these particular emails are not ones that humans would mark as spam (specifically, they are emails that contain license keys that people have paid good money for, so I don't think they're going to consider them spam) I figure this is a big topic in which I am essentially an ignorant simpleton.

  • How not to send all traffic over SBS connection?

    Hi, My girlfriend uses SBS Connection Manager to connect to her company's network. The problem is that the internet connection is überslow at work, so she wants to use the home internet connection to surf the web and use the SBS Connection to get to her work stuff. Normally with a VPN connection you just have to uncheck a box "Send all traffic over VPN connection" or "Use VPN as default gateway" or something like that. As I've never seen this SBS Connection Manager-thing before, I've no idea where to uncheck a similar box. (I've checked the properties of the connection in Network Connections, but it only has a few options about logging and firewall). Thanks for any help in advance! Kind regards, Niels R.

  • Using Excel VBA to send emails. Problem with attachments becoming embedded by accident.

    Hi, I am having an issue with an Excel macro I wrote that is used by several users within my company. It is used to send numerous emails daily with attachments that are also Excel workbooks. The issue is that sometimes, instead of the file simply being attached as it should be, it becomes an embedded object. This embedded object is openable by users on the email within the company (after clicking through the "YOu are about to activate an embedded object that may contain viruses or be otherwise harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that it is from a trustworthy source. Do you want to continue?"), but those outside of the company do not see it at all. The email appears to have no attachment at all. Curiously, this appears to happen randomly, and only on some computers. So if the list has 15 email lists and attachments, it seems to happen randomly to anywhere between 0 and 15 of the emails. To be clear, my objective is to send emails with regular attachments. Running Excel 2003, Outlook 2003, and Windows XP. See code below. Please help!   • How to prevent a URL in an email I send from being auto-linked by the recipient's email client?

    When I type a URL into an email in Outlook, it automatically converts it to a hyperlink. I can, of course, remove the hyperlink from the context menu: But, then when the email is received and when I view it in my Sent Items folder, the urls are again converted to hyperlinks. How can I prevent this? Embedded images are no good because the URL must be copy and pasteable (among numerous other reasons that this approach is not great). And it must retain the formatting applied when I send it. This answer on stackoverflow shows a good trick for preventing auto linked urls when sending an email programmatically, but I'm looking for a way to do this from the UI. Perhaps there a way to edit the HTML of the message before it is sent? If not, I guess I'm off to write an Outlook Add-in.

    How do you send a refresh message to a WPF grid or canvas? In other words, I have noticed while in debug mode, I can write code that sends a line to the display and then, if that line is not right, I can adjust it -- but the previous line is still there. Now, the code I am writing sends information to the display based on what the user clicks. So this must mean that the display is not refreshed each time a new set of lines and boxes and text goes to the grid or canvas in WPF. Using C# code, how do you send a refresh/repaint message to a WPF grid or canvas?

  • PHPMailer safe practices - Send escaped / sanitized variables or not ?

    I'm using the PHPMailer-Lite class to build an email sending script and I'm not sure if I should use addslashses() on the $name variable when adding it to the constructor. If somebody's last name would be O'Riley (or any other name that contains characters which should normally be sanitized before handling) and I would send it unescaped, wouldn't it mess with the script/email sending ? Is it safe to send it unescaped ? As a side note, I would also like to avoid having my message body say "Hello, O\'Riley". Looking at the source, I saw that it only trims the whitespace and line ending (\r\n) characters from the received $name variable, so any advice on this would be more than welcome.   • Server being used to send spam mail. How do I investigate?

    Problem I think my server is being used to send spam with sendmail, I'm getting a lot of mail being queued up that I don't recognize and my mail.log and syslog are getting huge. I've shutdown sendmail, so none of it is getting out but I can't work out where it's coming from. Investigation so far: I've tried the solution in the blog post below and also shown in this thread. It's meant to add a header from wherever the mail is being added and log all all mail to file, so I changed the following lines in my php.ini file: mail.add_x_header = On mail.log = /var/log/phpmail.log But nothing is appearing in the phpmail.log. I used the command here to investigate cron jobs for all users, but nothing is out of place. The only cron being run is the cron for the website. And then I brought up all php files which had been modified in the last 30 days but none of them look suspicious. What else can I do to find where this is coming from? Mail.log reports Turned sendmail back on for second. There are no contact forms on the site, there are a number of forms and they take either filtered text input or plain text input. Ok more investigation, it looks like the email is being send by my websites cron which runs every 5 minutes. However there are no cron jobs I've set-up which run more than once an hour and show on the website log so presumably someone has managed to edit my cron somehow.   • Send Ctrl+Alt+Del over VNC with Vista and UAC off?

    I'm trying to set up a machine here with Ultra VNC on Vista with UAC off. Problem is, in this configuration, I can't send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the Vista machine and so I'm stuck at the login screen, which is waiting for the CAD sequence. I'm joined to a domain, so I don't think I can disable the CAD requirement. I can't re-enable UAC either. I also tried using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to work. Any workaround or solution?

    How can I best implement a system for send keystrokes/commands via an iPhone and/or Droid to a desktop or laptop computer via WiFi or bluetooth? There are apps for VLC, Keynote and other applications that do this, so I know it's possible but don't know what technology base to use. The implementation is probably different on Windows and OS X, but if they could be similar that'd be a big win. If VNC-type technology is used, that'd be fine but I only need to send key commands and mouse clicks—I don't need to be able to navigate the screen space.

    I am comparing my cable TV wire to my network wire. In a TV cable wire, different frequencies are used by different TV channels. And since a certain channel use a fixed frequency, I think the only left way to represent different signal is with the carrier wave's amplitude. But what about the network wire? For all the network cards with the same type, do they also use different frequencies to send signals just like TV cable? I vaguely remember that they use frequency adjustment to represent signals. So the frequency should not be a fixed one. So how did all the network cards that sharing the same medium differentiate their own signal from others?

    I can successfully send any single key message to an application, but don't know how to send combinations of keys (like Ctrl+F12, Shift+F1, Ctrl+R, etc..) Tired doing this that way: SendMessage(handle, WM_KEYDOWN, Keys.Control, 0); SendMessage(handle, WM_KEYDOWN, Keys.F12, 0); SendMessage(handle, WM_KEYUP, Keys.F12, 0); SendMessage(handle, WM_KEYUP, Keys.Control, 0); but this doen not seems to work.. (application act like only F12 is pressed, not Ctrl+F12).. Any ideas how to make this work?

    Picture a scenario where I'm logged into a server (which we'll call "Wallace") from my local machine, and from there I ssh into another server (which we'll call "Gromit"): laptop ---ssh---> Wallace ---ssh---> Gromit Then the ssh session from Wallace to Gromit hangs, and I want to kill it. If I enter ~. to kill ssh, it kills the ssh session from my laptop to Wallace, because the ~ is intercepted by that ssh session, and the . is taken as a command to kill the session. How do I send a command to the ssh session between Wallace and Gromit? How do I kill my "inner" ssh?
