  • [CODE GENERATION] How to generate DELETE statements in PL/SQL, based on the tables FK relations?

    - by The chicken in the kitchen
    Is it possible via script/tool to generate authomatically many delete statements based on the tables fk relations, using Oracle PL/SQL? In example: I have the table: CHICKEN (CHICKEN_CODE NUMBER) and there are 30 tables with fk references to its CHICKEN_CODE that I need to delete; there are also other 150 tables foreign-key-linked to that 30 tables that I need to delete first. Is there some tool/script PL/SQL that I can run in order to generate all the necessary delete statements based on the FK relations for me? (by the way, I know about cascade delete on the relations, but please pay attention: I CAN'T USE IT IN MY PRODUCTION DATABASE, because it's dangerous!) I'm using Oracle DataBase 10G R2. This is the result I've written, but it is not recursive: This is a view I have previously written, but of course it is not recursive! CREATE OR REPLACE FORCE VIEW RUN ( OWNER_1, CONSTRAINT_NAME_1, TABLE_NAME_1, TABLE_NAME, VINCOLO ) AS SELECT OWNER_1, CONSTRAINT_NAME_1, TABLE_NAME_1, TABLE_NAME, '(' || LTRIM ( EXTRACT (XMLAGG (XMLELEMENT ("x", ',' || COLUMN_NAME)), '/x/text()'), ',') || ')' VINCOLO FROM ( SELECT CON1.OWNER OWNER_1, CON1.TABLE_NAME TABLE_NAME_1, CON1.CONSTRAINT_NAME CONSTRAINT_NAME_1, CON1.DELETE_RULE, CON1.STATUS, CON.TABLE_NAME, CON.CONSTRAINT_NAME, COL.POSITION, COL.COLUMN_NAME FROM DBA_CONSTRAINTS CON, DBA_CONS_COLUMNS COL, DBA_CONSTRAINTS CON1 WHERE CON.OWNER = 'TABLE_OWNER' AND CON.TABLE_NAME = 'TABLE_OWNED' AND ( (CON.CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'P') OR (CON.CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'U')) AND COL.TABLE_NAME = CON1.TABLE_NAME AND COL.CONSTRAINT_NAME = CON1.CONSTRAINT_NAME --AND CON1.OWNER = CON.OWNER AND CON1.R_CONSTRAINT_NAME = CON.CONSTRAINT_NAME AND CON1.CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'R' GROUP BY CON1.OWNER, CON1.TABLE_NAME, CON1.CONSTRAINT_NAME, CON1.DELETE_RULE, CON1.STATUS, CON.TABLE_NAME, CON.CONSTRAINT_NAME, COL.POSITION, COL.COLUMN_NAME) GROUP BY OWNER_1, CONSTRAINT_NAME_1, TABLE_NAME_1, TABLE_NAME; ... and it contains the error of using DBA_CONSTRAINTS instead of ALL_CONSTRAINTS...

  • Tail recursion and memoization with C#

    - by Jay
    I'm writing a function that finds the full path of a directory based on a database table of entries. Each record contains a key, the directory's name, and the key of the parent directory (it's the Directory table in an MSI if you're familiar). I had an iterative solution, but it started looking a little nasty. I thought I could write an elegant tail recursive solution, but I'm not sure anymore. I'll show you my code and then explain the issues I'm facing. Dictionary<string, string> m_directoryKeyToFullPathDictionary = new Dictionary<string, string>(); ... private string ExpandDirectoryKey(Database database, string directoryKey) { // check for terminating condition string fullPath; if (m_directoryKeyToFullPathDictionary.TryGetValue(directoryKey, out fullPath)) { return fullPath; } // inductive step Record record = ExecuteQuery(database, "SELECT DefaultDir, Directory_Parent FROM Directory where Directory.Directory='{0}'", directoryKey); // null check string directoryName = record.GetString("DefaultDir"); string parentDirectoryKey = record.GetString("Directory_Parent"); return Path.Combine(ExpandDirectoryKey(database, parentDirectoryKey), directoryName); } This is how the code looked when I realized I had a problem (with some minor validation/massaging removed). I want to use memoization to short circuit whenever possible, but that requires me to make a function call to the dictionary to store the output of the recursive ExpandDirectoryKey call. I realize that I also have a Path.Combine call there, but I think that can be circumvented with a ... + Path.DirectorySeparatorChar + .... I thought about using a helper method that would memoize the directory and return the value so that I could call it like this at the end of the function above: return MemoizeHelper( m_directoryKeyToFullPathDictionary, Path.Combine(ExpandDirectoryKey(database, parentDirectoryKey)), directoryName); But I feel like that's cheating and not going to be optimized as tail recursion. Any ideas? Should I be using a completely different strategy? This doesn't need to be a super efficient algorithm at all, I'm just really curious. I'm using .NET 4.0, btw. Thanks!

  • No idea how to solve SICP exercise 1.11

    - by Javier Badia
    This is not homework. Exercise 1.11: A function f is defined by the rule that f(n) = n if n<3 and f(n) = f(n - 1) + 2f(n - 2) + 3f(n - 3) if n 3. Write a procedure that computes f by means of a recursive process. Write a procedure that computes f by means of an iterative process. Implementing it recursively is simple enough. But I couldn't figure out how to do it iteratively. I tried comparing with the Fibonacci example given, but I didn't know how to use it as an analogy. So I gave up (shame on me) and Googled for an explanation, and I found this: (define (f n) (if (< n 3) n (f-iter 2 1 0 n))) (define (f-iter a b c count) (if (< count 3) a (f-iter (+ a (* 2 b) (* 3 c)) a b (- count 1)))) After reading it, I understand the code and how it works. But what I don't understand is the process needed to get from the recursive defintion of the function to this. I don't get how the code formed in someone's head. Could you explain the thought process needed to arrive at the solution?

  • What exactly is a reentrant function?

    - by eSKay
    Most of the times, the definition of reentrance is quoted from Wikipedia: A computer program or routine is described as reentrant if it can be safely called again before its previous invocation has been completed (i.e it can be safely executed concurrently). To be reentrant, a computer program or routine: Must hold no static (or global) non-constant data. Must not return the address to static (or global) non-constant data. Must work only on the data provided to it by the caller. Must not rely on locks to singleton resources. Must not modify its own code (unless executing in its own unique thread storage) Must not call non-reentrant computer programs or routines. How is safely defined? If a program can be safely executed concurrently, does it always mean that it is reentrant? What exactly is the common thread between the six points mentioned that I should keep in mind while checking my code for reentrant capabilities? Also, Are all recursive functions reentrant? Are all thread-safe functions reentrant? Are all recursive and thread-safe functions reentrant? While writing this question, one thing comes to mind: Are the terms like reentrance and thread safety absolute at all i.e. do they have fixed concrete definations? For, if they are not, this question is not very meaningful. Thanks!

  • Running a Model::find in for loop in cakephp v1.3

    - by Gaurav Sharma
    Hi all, How can I achieve the following result in cakephp: In my application a Topic is related to category, category is related to city and city is finally related to state in other words: topic belongs to category, category belongs to city , city belongs to state.. Now in the Topic controller's index action I want to find out all the topics and it's city and state. How can I do this. I can easily do this using a custom query ($this-Model-query() function ) but then I will be facing pagination difficulties. I tried doing like this function index() { $this->Topic->recursive = 0; $topics = $this->paginate(); for($i=0; $i<count($topics);$i++) { $topics[$i]['City'] = $this->Topic->Category->City->find('all', array('conditions' => array('City.id' => $topics[$i]['Category']['city_id']))); } $this->set(compact('messages')); } The method that I have adopted is not a good one (running query in a loop) Using the recursive property and setting it to highest value (2) will degrade performance and is not going to yield me state information. How shall I solve this ? Please help Thanks

  • string comparision and counting the key in target [closed]

    - by mesun
    Suppose we want to count the number of times that a key string appears in a target string. We are going to create two different functions to accomplish this task: one iterative, and one recursive. For both functions, you can rely on Python's find function - you should read up on its specifications to see how to provide optional arguments to start the search for a match at a location other than the beginning of the string. For example, find("atgacatgcacaagtatgcat","atgc") #returns the value 5, while find("atgacatgcacaagtatgcat","atgc",6) #returns the value 15, meaning that by starting the search at index 6, #the next match is found at location 15. For the recursive version, you will want to think about how to use your function on a smaller version of the same problem (e.g., on a smaller target string) and then how to combine the result of that computation to solve the original problem. For example, given you can find the first instance of a key string in a target string, how would you combine that result with invocation of the same function on a smaller target string? You may find the string slicing operation useful in getting substrings of string.

  • C# Recursion SumOfOnlyNeg Elements

    - by Chris
    Hello, A array gets filled up with random elements (negative and positive). Now i want to calculate the sum of ONLY the postive elements. Iterative there is no problem, but in the recursion version i can only get the sum of both negative and postive. How can i "check" in the recursive version that it only sums up the Postive elements? Best Regards. Iterative version: public int IterSomPosElem(int[] tabel, int n) { n = 0; for (int i = 0; i < tabel.Length; i++) { if (tabel[i] >= 0) { n += tabel[i]; } } return n; } Recursive version atm (sums up all the elements insteed, of only the positive) public int RecuSomPosElem(int[] tabel, int n) { if(n == 1) return tabel[0]; //stopCriterium else { return (tabel[n - 1] + RecuSomPosElem(tabel, n - 1)); // how to check, so it only sums up the postive elements and "ignores" the negative elements. } }

  • How to work with CTE. There is some error related to anchor.

    - by Shantanu Gupta
    I am creating a hierarchy representaion of a column. But an error occurs Details are Msg 240, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Types don't match between the anchor and the recursive part in column "DISPLAY" of recursive query "CTE". I know there is some typecasting error. But I dont know how to remove error. Please just dont only sort out my error. I need explanation why this error is coming. When this error occurs. I am trying to sort table on the basis of sort col that i m introducing. I want to add '-' at every level and want to sort accordingly. Please help WITH CTE (PK_CATEGORY_ID, [DESCRIPTION], FK_CATEGORY_ID, DISPLAY, SORT, DEPTH) AS ( SELECT PK_CATEGORY_ID, [DESCRIPTION], FK_CATEGORY_ID, '-' AS DISPLAY, '--' AS SORT, 0 AS DEPTH FROM dbo.L_CATEGORY_TYPE WHERE FK_CATEGORY_ID IS NULL UNION ALL SELECT T.PK_CATEGORY_ID, T.[DESCRIPTION], T.FK_CATEGORY_ID, CAST(DISPLAY+T.[DESCRIPTION] AS VARCHAR(1000)), '--' AS SORT, C.DEPTH +1 FROM dbo.L_CATEGORY_TYPE T JOIN CTE C ON C.PK_CATEGORY_ID = T.FK_CATEGORY_ID --SELECT T.PK_CATEGORY_ID, C.SORT+T.[DESCRIPTION], T.FK_CATEGORY_ID --, CAST('--' + C.SORT AS VARCHAR(1000)) AS SORT, CAST(DEPTH +1 AS INT) AS DEPTH --FROM dbo.L_CATEGORY_TYPE T JOIN CTE C ON C.FK_CATEGORY_ID = T.PK_CATEGORY_ID ) SELECT PK_CATEGORY_ID, [DESCRIPTION], FK_CATEGORY_ID, DISPLAY, SORT, DEPTH FROM CTE ORDER BY SORT

  • Efficient Multiplication of Varying-Length #s [Conceptual]

    - by Milan Patel
    Write the pseudocode of an algorithm that takes in two arbitrary length numbers (provided as strings), and computes the product of these numbers. Use an efficient procedure for multiplication of large numbers of arbitrary length. Analyze the efficiency of your algorithm. I decided to take the (semi) easy way out and use the Russian Peasant Algorithm. It works like this: a * b = a/2 * 2b if a is even a * b = (a-1)/2 * 2b + a if a is odd My pseudocode is: rpa(x, y){ if x is 1 return y if x is even return rpa(x/2, 2y) if x is odd return rpa((x-1)/2, 2y) + y } I have 3 questions: Is this efficient for arbitrary length numbers? I implemented it in C and tried varying length numbers. The run-time in was near-instant in all cases so it's hard to tell empirically... Can I apply the Master's Theorem to understand the complexity...? a = # subproblems in recursion = 1 (max 1 recursive call across all states) n / b = size of each subproblem = n / 1 - b = 1 (problem doesn't change size...?) f(n^d) = work done outside recursive calls = 1 - d = 0 (the addition when a is odd) a = 1, b^d = 1, a = b^d - complexity is in n^d*log(n) = log(n) this makes sense logically since we are halving the problem at each step, right? What might my professor mean by providing arbitrary length numbers "as strings". Why do that? Many thanks in advance

  • git submodule pull and commit automatically on webserver

    - by Lukas Oppermann
    I have the following setup, I am working on a project project with the submodule submodule. Whenever I push changes to github it sends a post request to update.php on the server. This php file executes a git command. Without submodules I can just do a git pull and everything is fine but with submodules it is much more difficult. I have this at the moment, but it does not do what I want. I should git pull the repo and update and pull the latest version of each submodule. <?php echo `git submodule foreach 'git checkout master; git pull; git submodule update --init --recursive; git commit -m "updating"' && git pull && git submodule foreach 'git add -A .' && git commit -m "updating to latest version including submodules" 2>&1s`; EDIT// Okay, I got it half way done. <?php echo `git submodule foreach 'git checkout master; git pull; git submodule update --init --recursive; git commit -am "updating"; echo "updated"' && git pull && git commit -am "updating to latest version including submodules" && echo 'updated'`; The echo prevents the script to stop because of non-zero returned. It works 100% fine when I run it from the console using php update.php. When github initialized the file, or I run it from the browser it still does not work. Any ideas?

  • Top n items in a List ( including duplicates )

    - by Krishnan
    Trying to find an efficient way to obtain the top N items in a very large list, possibly containing duplicates. I first tried sorting & slicing, which works. But this seems unnnecessary. You shouldn't need to sort a very large list if you just want the top 20 members. So I wrote a recursive routine which builds the top-n list. This also works, but is very much slower than the non-recursive one! Question: Which is my second routine (elite2) so much slower than elite, and how do I make it faster ? My code is attached below. Thanks. import scala.collection.SeqView import scala.math.min object X { def elite(s: SeqView[Int, List[Int]], k:Int):List[Int] = { s.sorted.reverse.force.slice(0,min(k,s.size)) } def elite2(s: SeqView[Int, List[Int]], k:Int, s2:List[Int]=Nil):List[Int] = { if( k == 0 || s.size == 0) s2.reverse else { val m = s.max val parts = s.force.partition(_==m) val whole = if( parts._1.size > 1) parts._1.tail:::parts._2 else parts._2 elite2( whole.view, k-1, m::s2 ) } } def main(args:Array[String]) = { val N = 1000000/3 val x = List(N to 1 by -1).flatten.map(x=>List(x,x,x)).flatten.view println(elite2(x,20)) println(elite(x,20)) } }

  • Insertion into BST without header Node JAVA

    - by Petiatil
    I am working on a recursive insertion method for a BST. This function is suppose to be a recursive helper method and is in a private class called Node. The Node class is in a class called BinarySearchTree which contains an instance variable for the root. When I am trying to insert an element, I get a NullPointerException at : this.left = insert(((Node)left).element); I am unsure about why this occurs. If I understand correctly, in a BST, I am suppose to insert the item at the last spot on the path transversed. Any help is appreciated! private class Node implements BinaryNode<E> { E item; BinaryNode<E> left, right; public BinaryNode<E> insert(E item) { int compare = item.compareTo(((Node)root).item); if(root == null) { root = new Node(); ((Node)root).item = item; } else if(compare < 0) { this.left = insert(((Node)left).item); } else if(compare > 0) { this.right = insert(((Node)right).item); } return root; } }

  • HELP!! Delayed-job: Rake aborted! Can't modify frozen hash

    - by pmneve
    Too bad even the trace doesn't say which hash is involved. Sorry this post is long: am trying to provide enough context to be meaningful. Occurs intermittently when rake jobs:work is pulling a command out of delayed_jobs while my status observer is in the process of parsing a log file for detailed results of the previous delayed_job denizen. I have an observer class (in RAILS_ROOT/lib ) which listens for the events, makes a copy of them and calls the owner class ( in apps/models ) which then calls on the log parser (also in /lib) to do the actual work. (Should both of those classes, the observer and the parser be in app/models?) Am due to deliver this application in a few days and this is killing it (and me). Am using DirectoryWatcher to look for flag files that indicate the start and finish of the delayed_jobs. That is started at the end of environment.rb like this: require 'directory_watcher' $scriptStatusObserver = ScriptStatusObserver.new dirToWatch ="#{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/flags" $directoryWatcher = DirectoryWatcher.new( dirToWatch ) $directoryWatcher.glob= "*.flg" $directoryWatcher.interval=(15) $directoryWatcher.add_observer( $scriptStatusObserver ) $directoryWatcher.persist=("#{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/flags/dw_state.yml") $directoryWatcher.start at_exit { $directoryWatcher.stop } This code is outside of the run method (btw is that the best place or is inside the run better?) Here is the observer: require 'script_run' class ScriptStatusObserver def initialize @rcvdEvents = [] end def update( *events ) begin puts "#{LINE.to_s}: ScriptStatusObserver events: \n"+events.to_yaml cnt = 0 events.each do |e| if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) cnt = cnt + 1 @rcvdEvents << e end end ScriptRun.new.catch_up( @rcvdEvents ) if cnt > 0 @rcvdEvents.clear rescue puts $! end end end Here is ScriptRun (it attaches to an associative table built with has_many:through) require 'observer' class ScriptRun < ActiveRecord::Base set_table_name "scripts_runs" belongs_to :script belongs_to :run def parse( result ) parser = LogParser.new parser.parse(result) end def catch_up( events ) events.each do |e| typ = e.type path = e.path thisMatch = path.match(/flags\/(\d+)_(\d+)_([\d\.]+)_(\w+)\.flg/) run_id = thisMatch[1] script_id = thisMatch[2] ts = thisMatch[3] status = thisMatch[4] if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) end end end def status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) scriptrun = ScriptRun.find(:first, :conditions => [ "run_id = ? and script_id = ?", run_id.to_i, script_id.to_i ]) if scriptrun.kind_of?(ScriptRun) currStatus = scriptrun.status if not currStatus == 'completed' scriptrun.update_attribute(:status, status) if status == 'parse' flag = File.new(path) logSpec = flag.gets flag.close logName = File.basename(logSpec) logPath = logSpec.sub(logName, '') logName =~ /^(([\w_]+)_([\w]+)_(\d+))\.log$/ name = $1 basename = $2 runenv = $3 tsOrPid = $4 result = Result.new result.log_path = logPath result.basename = basename result.name = name result.script_id = script_id.to_i result.run_id = run_id.to_i if runenv == 'sit' runenv = 'SIT3348' end result.application_environment_id = ApplicationEnvironment.find(:first, :conditions => [ "nodename = ?", runenv]).id parse(result) if run_completed?( run_id ) myRun = Run.find(run_id.to_i) if myRun.kind_of?( Run ) myRun.update_attribute( :completed, Time.now.to_f ) end end end end else puts "#{__LINE__.to_s}: ScriptRun.status_update: ScriptRun not found for run #{run_id} script #{script_id} ts #{ts.to_s}" end File.delete(path) end def run_completed?( id ) scriptruns = ScriptRun.find(:all, :conditions = [ "run_id = ?", id.to_i] ) scriptruns.each do |sr| if not sr.status == 'completed' return false end end return true end end LogParser is too long even for this post but it reads the script log and pulls detailed information (counts and timings) out of the log and writes to a details table. It also tallies and calculates averages and rolls those up into summary tables for quicker access from the web pages. Here is the error trace: (don't ask why everything is under my Windows profile. Here is the observer: require 'script_run' class ScriptStatusObserver def initialize @rcvdEvents = [] end def update( *events ) begin puts "#{LINE.to_s}: ScriptStatusObserver events: \n"+events.to_yaml cnt = 0 events.each do |e| if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) cnt = cnt + 1 @rcvdEvents << e end end ScriptRun.new.catch_up( @rcvdEvents ) if cnt > 0 @rcvdEvents.clear rescue puts $! end end end Here is ScriptRun (it attaches to an associative table built with has_many:through) require 'observer' class ScriptRun < ActiveRecord::Base set_table_name "scripts_runs" belongs_to :script belongs_to :run def parse( result ) parser = LogParser.new parser.parse(result) end def catch_up( events ) events.each do |e| typ = e.type path = e.path thisMatch = path.match(/flags\/(\d+)_(\d+)_([\d\.]+)_(\w+)\.flg/) run_id = thisMatch[1] script_id = thisMatch[2] ts = thisMatch[3] status = thisMatch[4] if e.to_s.match(/^\s*added/) status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) end end end def status_update( script_id, run_id, status, ts, path ) scriptrun = ScriptRun.find(:first, :conditions => [ "run_id = ? and script_id = ?", run_id.to_i, script_id.to_i ]) if scriptrun.kind_of?(ScriptRun) currStatus = scriptrun.status if not currStatus == 'completed' scriptrun.update_attribute(:status, status) if status == 'parse' flag = File.new(path) logSpec = flag.gets flag.close logName = File.basename(logSpec) logPath = logSpec.sub(logName, '') logName =~ /^(([\w_]+)_([\w]+)_(\d+))\.log$/ name = $1 basename = $2 runenv = $3 tsOrPid = $4 result = Result.new result.log_path = logPath result.basename = basename result.name = name result.script_id = script_id.to_i result.run_id = run_id.to_i if runenv == 'sit' runenv = 'SIT3348' end result.application_environment_id = ApplicationEnvironment.find(:first, :conditions => [ "nodename = ?", runenv]).id parse(result) if run_completed?( run_id ) myRun = Run.find(run_id.to_i) if myRun.kind_of?( Run ) myRun.update_attribute( :completed, Time.now.to_f ) end end end end else puts "#{__LINE__.to_s}: ScriptRun.status_update: ScriptRun not found for run #{run_id} script #{script_id} ts #{ts.to_s}" end File.delete(path) end def run_completed?( id ) scriptruns = ScriptRun.find(:all, :conditions = [ "run_id = ?", id.to_i] ) scriptruns.each do |sr| if not sr.status == 'completed' return false end end return true end end LogParser is too long even for this post but it reads the script log and pulls detailed information (counts and timings) out of the log and writes to a details table. It also tallies and calculates averages and rolls those up into summary tables for quicker access from the web pages. Here is the error trace: (don't ask why everything is under my Windows profile. • What causes style corruption in MS Word?

    - by Phil.Wheeler
    I've had a few documents across my desk that appear to have a corrupted or recursive style for much of the body text: Char char char char char char Does anyone know what causes this and how to permanently delete this style? When I try to delete it, it disappears from the Styles and Formatting pane of Word, only to reappear later when different text is selected. Input or guidance much appreciated.

  • Windows: File copy/move with filename regular expressions?

    - by Ian Boyd
    i basically want to run: C:\>xcopy [0-9]{13}\.(gif|jpg|png) s:\TargetFolder /s i know xcopy doesn't support regular-express filename searches. i can't find out how to find out if PowerShell has a Cmdlet to copy files; and if it does, how to find out if it supports regular expression filename matching. Can anyone think of a way to perform a recursive file copy/move with regex filename matching?

  • Windows: View "all" permissions of a specific user or group

    - by peterchen
    For a Windows domain, is there a way to see for a certain user or group, where the user/group has permissions? Primarily: List which files / folders the user can access on a certain network share. (Kind of a recursive "effective permissions") However, other permissions would be cool as well. I believe I've seen such a tool in action, but I can't remember anything beyond that - so this might be a false memory. Recommendations?

  • Enterprise IPv6 Migration - End of proxypac ? Start of Point-to-Point ? +10K users

    - by Yohann
    Let's start with a diagram : We can see a "typical" IPv4 company network with : An Internet acces through a proxy An "Others companys" access through an dedicated proxy A direct access to local resources All computers have a proxy.pac file that indicates which proxy to use or whether to connect directly. Computers have access to just a local DNS (no name resolution for google.com for example.) By the way ... The company does not respect the RFC1918 internally and uses public addresses! (historical reason). The use of internet proxy explicitly makes it possible to not to have problem. What if we would migrate to IPv6? Step 1 : IPv6 internet access Internet access in IPv6 is easy. Indeed, just connect the proxy in Internet IPv4 and IPv6. There is nothing to do in internal network : Step 2 : IPv6 AND IPv4 in internal network And why not full IPv6 network directly? Because there is always the old servers that are not compatible IPv6 .. Option 1 : Same architecture as in IPv4 with a proxy pac This is probably the easiest solution. But is this the best? I think the transition to IPv6 is an opportunity not to bother with this proxy pac! Option 2 : New architecture with transparent proxy, whithout proxypac, recursive DNS Oh yes! In this new architecture, we have: Explicit Internet Proxy becomes a Transparent Internet Proxy Local DNS becomes a Normal Recursive DNS + authorative for local domains No proxypac Explicit Company Proxy becomes a Transparent Company Proxy Routing Internal Routers reditect IP of appx.ext.example.com to Company Proxy. The default gateway is the Transparent Internet proxy. Questions What do you think of this architecture IPv6? This architecture will reveal the IP addresses of our internal network but it is protected by firewalls. Is this a real big problem? Should we keep the explicit use of a proxy? -How would you make for this migration scenario? -And you, how do you do in your company? Thanks! Feel free to edit my post to make it better.

  • How can I recursively verify the permissions within a given subdirectory?

    - by Mike
    I'd like to verify that nothing within /foo/bar is chmod 777. Or, alternatively, I'd like to make sure that nothing within /foo/bar us owned by user1 or in group1. Is there any way I can recursively verify the permissions within a given subdirectory to make sure there aren't any security holes? Notice that I do not want to change all the permissions to something specific, nor do I want to change the owner to something specific, so a recursive chmod or chown won't do it... Thanks!

    I'm running a certain script that is using a non-root user to do the following... mkdir: cannot create directory `/srv/www/example.com/releases' *** [err :: 12.23.45.789] : Permission denied How would I allow user xyz to have permanent permissions to do so and still keep this web server secure? Also is it possible to make it recursive for all subfolders? I know its probably chmod something but I'm not that linux savy, thanks.

  • Load and Web Performance Testing using Visual Studio Ultimate 2010-Part 2

    - by Tarun Arora
    Welcome back, in part 1 of Load and Web Performance Testing using Visual Studio 2010 I talked about why Performance Testing the application is important, the test tools available in Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 and various test rig topologies. In this blog post I’ll get into the details of web performance & load tests as well as why it’s important to follow a goal based pattern while performance testing your application. Tools => Options => Test Tools Have you visited the treasures of Visual Studio Menu bar tools => Options => Test Tools lately? The options to enable disable prompts on creating, editing, deleting or running manual/automated tests can be controller from here. The default test project language and default test types created on a new test project creation could be selected/unselected from here. Ever wondered how you can change the default limit of 25 test results, this can again be changed from here. If you record a lot of Web Tests and wish for the web test recorder to start with “that” URL populated, well this again can be specified from here. If you haven’t so far, I would urge you to spend 2 minutes in the test tools options.   Test Menu => Ready Steady Test Action! The Test tools are under the Test Menu in Visual Studio, apart from being able to create a new Test and Test List you can also load an existing vsmdi file. You can also manage your test controllers from here. A solution can have one or more test setting files, but there can only be one active test settings file at any time. Again, this selection can be done from here.  You can open the various test windows from under the windows option from the test menu. If you open the Test view window you will see that you have the option to group the tests by work items, project, test type, etc. You can set these properties by right clicking a test in the test list and choosing properties from the context menu.    So, what is a vsmdi file? vsmdi stands for Visual Studio Test Metadata File. Placed under the Solution Items this file keeps track of the list of unit tests in your solution. If you open the vsmdi file as an xml file you will see a series of Test Links nested with in the list Test List tags along with the Run Configuration tag. When in visual studio you run tests, the IDE looks at the vsmdi file to see what tests need to be run. You also have the option of using the vsmdi file in your team builds to specify which tests need to run as part of the build. Refer here for a walkthrough from a fellow blogger on how to use the vsmdi file in the team builds. Web Performance Test – The Truth! In Visual Studio 2010 “Web Tests” have been renamed to “Web Performance Tests”. Apart from renaming this test type there have been several improvements to this test type in visual studio 2010. I am very active on the MSDN Visual Studio And Load Testing forum and a frequent question from many users is “Do Web Tests support Pages that run JavaScript?” I will start with a little bit of background before answering this question. Web Performance Tests operate at the HTTP Layer, but why? To enable you to generate high loads with a relatively low amount of hardware, Web performance tests are driven at the protocol layer rather than instantiating a browser.The most common source of confusion is that users do not realize Web Performance Tests work at the HTTP layer. The tool adds to that misconception. After all, you record in IE, and when running a Web test you can select which browser to use, and then the result viewer shows the results in a browser window. So that means the tests run through the browser, right? NO! The Web test engine works at the HTTP layer, and does not instantiate a browser. What does that mean? In the diagram below, you can see there are no browsers running when the engine is sending and receiving requests. Does that mean I can’t test pages that use Java script? The best example for java script generating HTTP traffic is AJAX calls. The most common example of browser plugins are Silverlight or Flash. The Web test recorder will record HTTP traffic from AJAX calls and from most (but not all) browser plugins. This means you will still be able to web performance test pages that use java script or plugin and play back the results but the playback engine will not show the java script or plug in results in the ‘browser control’. If you want to test the page behaviour as a result of the java script or plug in consider using Coded UI Tests. This page looks like it failed, when in fact it succeeded! Looking closely at the response, and subsequent requests, it is clear the operation succeeded. As stated above, the reason why the browser control is pasting this message is because java script has been disabled in this control. So, to reiterate, the web performance test recorder: - Sends and receives data at the HTTP layer. - Does NOT run a browser. - Does NOT run java script. - Does NOT host ActiveX controls or plugins. There is a great series of blog posts from Ed Glas, i would highly recommend his blog to any one performing Load/Performance testing through Visual Studio. Demo – Web Performance Test [Demo] - Visual Studio Ultimate 2010: Test Settings and Configuration   [Demo]–Visual Studio Ultimate 2010: Web Performance Test   In this short video I try and answer the following questions, Why is performance Testing important? How does Visual Studio Help you performance Test your applications? How do i record a web performance test? How do make a web performance test data driven, transaction driven, loop driven, convert to code, add validations? Best practices for recording Web Performance Tests. I have a web performance test, what next? Creating the Web Performance Test was the first step towards load testing your application. Now that we have the base test we can test the page behaviour when N-users access the page. Have you ever had the head of business call you and mention that the marketing team has done a fantastic job and are expecting increased traffic on the web site, can the website survive the weekend with that additional load? This is the perfect opportunity to capacity test your application to see how your website holds up under various levels of load, you can work the results backwards to see how much hardware you may need to scale up your application to survive the weekend. Apart from that it is always a good idea to have some benchmarks around how the application performs under light loads for short duration, under heavy load for long duration and soak test the application run a constant load for a very week or two to record the effects of constant load for really long durations, this is a great way of identifying how your application handles the default IIS application pool reset which by default is configured to once every 25 hours. These bench marks will act as the perfect yard stick to measure performance gains when you start making improvements. BUT there are some best practices! => Goal Based Load Testing Approach Since the subject is vast and there are a lot of things to measure and analyse, … it is very easy to get distracted from the real goal!  You can optimize your application once you know where the pain points are. There is no point performing a load test of 5000 users if your intranet application will only have a 100 simultaneous users, it is important to keep focussed on the real goals of the project. So the idea is to have a user story around your load testing scenarios and test realistically. So it is recommended that you follow the below outline, It is an Iterative process, refine your objectives, identify the key scenarios, what is the expected workload, key metrics you want to report, record the web performance tests, simulate load and analyse results. Is your application already deployed in Production? This is great! You can analyse the IIS Logs to understand the user behaviour… But what are IIS LOGS? The IIS logs allow you to record events for each application and Web site on the Web server. You can create separate logs for each of your applications and Web sites. Logging information in IIS goes beyond the scope of the event logging or performance monitoring features provided by Windows. The IIS logs can include information, such as who has visited your site, what the visitor viewed, and when the information was last viewed. You can use the IIS logs to identify any attempts to gain unauthorized access to your Web server. How to configure IIS LOGS? For those Ninjas who already have IIS Logs configured (by the way its on by default) and need a way to analyse the IIS Logs, can use the Windows IIS Utility – Log Parser. Log Parser is a very powerful tool that provides a generic SQL-like language on top of many types of data like IIS Logs, Event Viewer entries, XML files, CSV files, File System and others; and it allows you to export the result of the queries to many output formats such as CSV, XML, SQL Server, Charts and others; and it works well with IIS 5, 6, 7 and 7.5. Frequently used Log Parser queries. Demo – Load Test [Demo]–Visual Studio Ultimate 2010: Load Testing   In this short video I try and answer the following questions, - Types of Performance Testing? - Perform Goal driven Load Testing, analyse Test Run Result and Generate a report? Recap A quick recap of what we have covered so far,     Thank you for taking the time out and reading this blog post, in part III of this blog series I’ll be getting into the details of Test Result Analysis, Test Result Drill through, Test Report Generation, Test Run Comparison, and the Asp.net Profiler.
