What I would like to do is add multiple checkboxes to my search form, so that users can mark multiple categories. (joined with or) Is this possible with searchlogic?     Simple task: given that an article has many comments, be able to display in a long list of articles how many comments each article has. I'm trying to work out how to preload this data with Arel. The "Complex Aggregations" section of the README file seems to discuss that type of situation, but it doesn't exactly offer sample code, nor does it offer a way to do it in two queries instead of one joined query, which is worse for performance. Given the following: class Article has_many :comments end class Comment belongs_to :article end How can I preload for an article set how many comments each has?

    Hello, I am loading am email with IMAP and parsing it with mail. This works very well, however the mail.body.decoded field contains a lot of formatting. I've been opting for b) as of late, but I did run into a little pickle: some_action.html.erb <% @dad.sons.each do |a_son| %> <%= render :partial => 'partial', :locals => { :son => a_son } %> <% end %> _partial.html.erb The son's name is <%= son.name %> The dad's name is <%= son.dad.name %> son.dad makes a database call to fetch the dad! So I would either have to access @dad, which would be going back to a) having partials access instance variables or I would have to pass @dad in locals, changing render :partial to <%= render :partial = 'partial', :locals = { :dad = @dad, :son = a_son } %, and for some reason passing a bunch of vars to my partial makes me feel uncomfortable.   • Rails & ActiveRecord: Appending methods to models that inherit from ActiveRecord::Base

    I have a standard ActiveRecord model with the following: class MyModel < ActiveRecord::Base custom_method :first_field, :second_field end At the moment, that custom_method is picked up by a module sent to ActiveRecord::Base. The functionality basically works, but of course, it attaches itself to every model class, not just MyModel. So if I have MyModel and MyOtherModel in the same action, it'll assume MyOtherModel has custom_method :first_field, :second_field as well. So, my question is: How do I attach a method (eg: def custom_method(*args)) to every class that inherits from ActiveRecord::Base, but not by attaching it to ActiveRecord::Base itself? Any ideas appreciated.

    Hello, i have a set of select inputs representing a users birthday: birthyear, birthmonth and birthday. And i want to validate birthyear like this: validates_inclusion_of :birthyear, :in => Date.today.year-50..Date.today.year-12 So the user can be at least 12 years but at most 50 years when they are registering. But my problem is that the variable from the input is a string and not an integer. So how can i convert the input to an integer? or is there any easier way to check the users age? Thanks, Micke

    Hi, I am wondering how I could create a custom data type to use within the rake migration file. Example: if you would be creating a model, inside the migration file you can add columns. It could look like this: def self.up create_table :products do |t| t.column :name, :string t.timestamps end end I would like to know how to create something like this: t.column :name, :my_custom_data_type The reason for this to create for example a "currency" type, which is nothing more than a decimal with a precision of 8 and a scale of 2.   • help with rails render action vs routing

    I was using some image cropping example that I found online and now I got confused. There is actually no "crop" method in my controller. Instead (following the guide) I put a render :action => 'cropping', :layout=> "admin" In my create method. That renders a page the view called cropping.html.erb . It works fine but I have no idea how to link or render that page otherwise, like if I wanted to hit a URL directly or press a button to recrop an image. Should I actually create a crop method in my controller and hook it up via routing if I want to be able to do this, or is there a way within my view to link to the same place that renders the cropping action? Sorry about the confusion :) It doesn't help that the first version of the tutorial did have a cropping method and he removed it!! Any explanation on why one method is better over the other would be great. Thanks!!

  • Nasty deep nested loop in Rails

    I have this nested loop that goes 4 levels deep to find all the image widgets and calculate their sizes. This seems really inefficient and nasty! I have thought of putting the organization_id in the widget model so I could just call something like organization.widgets.(named_scope), but I feel like that's a bad short cut. Is there a better way?     Hello all, I've been struggling with this for quite awhile and haven't been able to find a solution. I need a user to be able to view multiple top level domains with a single login. My understanding is that this needs to be set in environment.rb and called with before_dispatch.     I think I'm missing something very obvious and its making my brain hurt. class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :profile class Profile < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :user belongs_to :team I have a partial that loops through the users and print some basic info, I'm using this partial in my team show page. I had originally written this to return users who's profiles were a member of a team. def show @team = Team.find_by_id(params[:id]) @profiles= Profile.find(:all, :conditions => ['team_id = ?', @team.id]) @users = User.find_by_id(@profiles.user_id) end But quickly realized @profiles was an array, and it looks messy as hell. Stuck as to what my find should look like to select all User who have a profile that is a member of a team.   • How to do case-insensitive order in Rails with postgresql

    I am in the process of switching my development environment from sqlite3 to postgresql 8.4 and have one last hurdle. In my original I had the following line in a helper method; result = Users.find(:all, :order => "name collate NOCASE") which provided a very nice case-insensitive search. I can't replicate this for postgresql. Should be easy - any ideas? Thanks.
