  I'm unable to remove SQL Server 2008 sp1 completely from my system. I'm using windows 7 ultimate. Everytime I try uninstalling it i get the following error. • How to avoid the "divide by zero" error in SQL?

  I hate this error message: Msg 8134, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Divide by zero error encountered. What is the best way to write SQL code, so that I will never see this error message again? I mean, I could add a where clause so that my divisor is never zero. Or I could add a case statement, so that there is a special treatment for zero. Is the best way to use a NullIf clause? Is there better way, or how can this be enforced?

• Dynamic openrowset in T-Sql Function or viable alternative?

  I'm not quite sure how to phrase this. Here is the problem: I have 1-n items that I need to join to a different system (AS400) to get some data. The openrowset takes forever if I specify the where criteria outside of the openrowset, e.g.: select * from openrowset('my connection string', 'select code, myfield from myTable') where code = @code My idea was to create a function that takes in the item number and uses dynamic sql to inject it into the openrowset string, a la: declare @cmd varchar(1000) set @cmd = 'select * from openrowset('my connection string', ''select code, myfield from myTable where code = ' + @code + ''')' Apparently I can't use the insert.. exec.. strategy inside of a function. Is there any better way to achieve this? I was going to use this in joins where I needed the external data using cross apply. I'm not married to tvf and cross apply, but I do need a method of getting this data quickly. Thanks for any help.

• Generated LinqtoSql Sql 5x slower than SAME EXACT hand-written sql

  I have a sql statement which is hardcoded in an existing VB6 app. I'm upgrading a new version in C# and using Linq To Sql. I was able to get LinqToSql to generate the same sql (before I start refactoring), but for some reason the Sql generated by LinqToSql is 5x slower than the original sql. This is running the generated Sql Directly in LinqPad. The only real difference my meager sql eyes can spot is the WITH (NOLOCK), which if I add into the LinqToSql generated sql, makes no difference. Can someone point out what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks! • Server configuration advice for new site that could get lots of traffic within 6m

  We're setting up a new web2.0 type site with elements of e-commerce. Budget is kind of tight. Due to the nature of the site and promotions, etc., we expect traffic could ramp up fairly quickly. Looking for advice for a good configuration to start with, we' looking to co-lo with CalPop in downtown LA. We've looked at Dell, ABMX.com, and got a quote from CalPop (they make their own servers as they also do managed hosting). Price range has been anywhere from about $1200-$3300 per server. We're thinking to start with a web server and db server, both with mirrored drives. It would be nice to stay under about 2k per server if possible. Min configuration for each would probably be a quad-core with 8GB Ram. Thinking to run Windows Server 2008 R2 (Web Edition?) and SQL Server 2008. Looking for advice on the best server configurations and/or brands that fit the budget, yet will allow us to smoothly scale as traffic increases. Reliability is also pretty important. Also wondering if a switch/router is necessary or useful to connect the two servers.

  After presenting the SQL Developer PL/SQL debugger for about an hour yesterday at KScope12 in San Antonio, my boss came up and asked, “Now, would you really want to know what the Smart Data panel does?” Apparently I had ‘made up’ my own story about what that panel’s intent is based on my experience with it. Not good Jeff, not good. It was a very small point of my presentation, but I probably should have read the docs. The Smart Data tab displays information about variables, using your Debugger: Smart Data preferences. You can also specify these preferences by right-clicking in the Smart Data window and selecting Preferences. Debugger Smart Data Preferences, control number of variables to display The Smart Data panel auto-inspects the last X accessed variables. So if you have a program with 26 variables, instead of showing you all 26, it will just show you the last two variables that were referenced in your program. If you were to click on the ‘Data’ debug panel, you’ll see EVERYTHING. And if you only want to see a very specific set of values, then you should use Watches. The Smart Data Panel As I step through the code, the variables being tracked change as they are referenced. Only the most recent ones display. This is controlled by the ‘Maximum Locations to Remember’ preference. Step through the code, see the latest variables accessed The Data Panel All variables are displayed. Might be information overload on large PL/SQL programs where you have many dozens or even hundreds of variables to track. Shows everything all the time Watches Watches are added manually and only show what you ask for. Data on Demand – add a watch to track a specific variable Remember, you can interact with your data If you want to do more than just watch, you can mouse-right on a data element, and change the value of the variable as the program is running. • Using a .MDF SQL Server Database with ASP.NET Versus Using SQL Server

  I'm currently writing a website in ASP.NET MVC, and my database (which doesn't have any data in it yet, it only has the correct tables) uses SQL Server 2008, which I have installed on my development machine. I connect to the database out of my application by using the Server Explorer, followed by LINQ to SQL mapping. Once I finish developing the site, I will move it over to my hosting service, which is a virtual hosting plan. I'm concerned about whether using the SQL Server setup that is currently working on my development machine will be hard to do on the production server, as I'll have to import all the database tables through the hosting control panel. I've noticed that it is possible to create a SQL Server database from inside Visual Studio. It is then stored in the App_Data directory. My questions are the following: Does it make sense to move my SQL Server DB out of SQL Server and into the App_Data directory as an .mdf file? If so, how can I move it? I believe this is called the Detach command, is it not? Are there any performance/security issues that can occur with a .mdf file like this? Would my intended setup work OK with a typical virtual hosting plan? I'm hoping that the .mdf database won't count against the limited number of SQL Server databases that can be created with my plan. I hope this question isn't too broad. Thanks in advance! Note: I'm just starting out with ASP.NET MVC and all this, so I might be completely misunderstanding how this is supposed to work.

  Earlier this evening I posted a blog post entitled Investigation: Can different combinations of components effect Dataflow performance? where I compared the performance of three different dataflows all working to the same overall goal. I wanted to make one last point related to the results but I thought it warranted a blog post all of its own. Here is a screenshot of one of the dataflows that I was testing: Pretty complicated I’m sure you’ll agree. Now, when I executed this dataflow in the test it was executing in ~19seconds however in that case I was executing using the command-line tool dtexec. I also tried executing inside the BIDS development environment and in that case it took much longer – 139seconds. That’s more than seven times as long. The point I want to make is very simple. If you are testing your dataflows for performance please use dtexec. Nothing else will suffice. @Jamiet

The database recovery model was set to simple.   Hi, I'm using SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2, all sp'd up. I'm getting occasional issues with SQL Server hanging with the CPU usage on 100% on our live server. It seems all the wait time on SQL Sever when this happens is given to SOS_SCHEDULER_YIELD. Here is the Stored Proc that causes the hang. I've added the "WITH (NOLOCK)" in an attempt to fix what seems to be a locking issue. ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[MostPopularRead] AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; SELECT c.ForeignId , ct.ContentSource as ContentSource , sum(ch.HitCount * hw.Weight) as Popularity , (sum(ch.HitCount * hw.Weight) * 100) / @Total as Percent , @Total as TotalHits from ContentHit ch WITH (NOLOCK) join [Content] c WITH (NOLOCK) on ch.ContentId = c.ContentId join HitWeight hw WITH (NOLOCK) on ch.HitWeightId = hw.HitWeightId join ContentType ct WITH (NOLOCK) on c.ContentTypeId = ct.ContentTypeId where ch.CreatedDate between @Then and @Now group by c.ForeignId , ct.ContentSource order by sum(ch.HitCount * hw.HitWeightMultiplier) desc END The stored proc reads from the table "ContentHit", which is a table that tracks when content on the site is clicked (it gets hit quite frequently - anything from 4 to 20 hits a minute). So its pretty clear that this table is the source of the problem. There is a stored proc that is called to add hit tracks to the ContentHit table, its pretty trivial, it just builds up a string from the params passed in, which involves a few selects from some lookup tables, followed by the main insert: BEGIN TRAN insert into [ContentHit] (ContentId, HitCount, HitWeightId, ContentHitComment) values (@ContentId, isnull(@HitCount,1), isnull(@HitWeightId,1), @ContentHitComment) COMMIT TRAN The ContentHit table has a clustered index on its ID column, and I've added another index on CreatedDate since that is used in the select. When I profile the issue, I see the Stored proc executes for exactly 30 seconds, then the SQL timeout exception occurs. If it makes a difference the web application using it is ASP.NET, and I'm using Subsonic (3) to execute these stored procs. Can someone please advise how best I can solve this problem? I don't care about reading dirty data... Thanks

• Migrating MOSS 2007 from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 - Addendum

  This is a continuation of an earlier question I had about moving the databases for a MOSS 2007 installation from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. Here's the URL for the original question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/254517/migrating-moss-2007-from-sql-2000-to-sql-2005 In my test environment, I've successfully moved the databases to the SQL 2005 test machine and things appear to be working fine. But, on the "Servers in Farm" page of the Central Admin | Operations, it still shows the old (i.e. SQL 2000) server as the Configuration Database Server. Also, it shows the old config database as being the Configuration Database. I know that the SQL2000 server and old config database (that are showing on this page) are NOT being used, because we've deactived the SQL instance in SQL2000. I've tried "removing" the server, and get a message about "Uninstalling SharePoint products and technologies" being the better route. So, I disconnected from the test databases, uninstalled SharePoint from the test WFE server, and reinstalled it. That didn't do anything. Before uninstalling/reinstalling I also tried simply rerunning the SharePoint Configuration wizard, and that didn't do anything either. Does anyone know how to update the Config Server and Config Database on the "Servers in Farm" page after having moved the Config and Content DBs? Is there something I'm missing or overlooking? Why we need to add N in front for nvarchar type, what's the pro or con if we are not using it?

All the software seems to be there by default on Server 2012 and my hardware meets the reqs. Copy the installation media to the local drive and try to install from that (rather than a DVD). This produced the same error. Based on another error message, I installed .NET 4.0 (which apparently is not on Server 2012 out of the box). Same error. Install from command line. • Passive FTP on Windows Server 2008 R2 using the IIS7 FTP-Server

  Hello serverFault-community! During the last few days I have been setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 in a VMware. I installed the standard FTP-Server on it by using the Webserver (IIS)-role. Everything works fine with accessing my FTP-Site with ftp://localhost in Firefox. I can also get access to it via the local IP of my Server. Actually everything works fine in my LAN. But here's my problem: I want to get access "from outside", using the external IP or a dyndns-URL. I have a LinkSys-Router in front of my Server, therefore I'm forwarding all the important ports. If you may now think "this idiot has probably forgotten some ports", I must dissappoint you. It even works getting access to my Server-Website and messing around in some WebInterfaces. The problem is my passive FTP (active works for me). I always get a timeout, when e.g. FileZilla waits for a response to the LIST-command. The one big thing I don't get, is, why my Server sends a response to the PASV-command, naming a port like 40918, even if I have restricted the data port range for my passive FTP ( in the IIS-Manager) to e.g. [5000-5009]. I simply don't want to open and forward all possible data ports! And another thing is, I can't specify a static external IP-adress for my server, since I don't own any. I hope I have explained my problem in a comprehensible way. If not, simply ask by posting a comment! Could this be caused by the router, that doesn't forward out-ports directly, but uses different ones? (-- The IP-Adress given is the local one, since I'm not able to define a static external in the IIS-Mgr)

We have identified one problem, and that is reading/writing performance. We have an application that compiles files and writes to disk. This is considerably slower on the new virtual machines compared to the physical machines. Is there a performance bottleneck when writing to a virtual hard drive compared to a physical hard drive?

  We’ve got a performance problem in production. QA and DEV environments are 2 instances on the same physical server: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32 GB RAM, 1 Quad 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon X5270 (4 cores x64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives Prod: Windows 2003 Datacenter SP2, 64 GB RAM, 4 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Intel Family 80000002, Model 6 Itanium (8 cores IA64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives, Veritas Cluster I am seeing excessive Signal Wait Percentages ( 250%) and Page Reads /s (50) and Page Writes /s (25) are both high occasionally. I did test this query on both QA and PROD and it has the same execution plan and even the same stats: SELECT top 40000000 * INTO dbo.tmp_tbl FROM dbo.tbl GO Scan count 1, logical reads 429564, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. As you can see it’s just logical reads, however: QA: 0:48 Prod: 2:18 So It seems like a processor related issue, however I’m not sure where to go next, any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

  I need to keep track of the last login time for each user in our SQL Server 2005 database. I created a trigger like this: CREATE TRIGGER LogonTimeStamp ON ALL SERVER FOR LOGON AS BEGIN IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM miscdb..user_last_login WHERE user_id = SYSTEM_USER) UPDATE miscdb..user_last_login SET last_login = GETDATE() WHERE user_id = SYSTEM_USER ELSE INSERT INTO miscdb..user_last_login (user_id,last_login) VALUES (SYSTEM_USER,GETDATE()) END; go This trigger works for servers that are system admins but it won't allow regular users to login. I have granted public select,insert and update to the table but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Is there a way to set permissions on the trigger? Is there something else I am missing? Thanks

• Connection to SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Server is SLOW

  The database server is a VM running SQL Server 2008 R2 on top of Windows Server 2012, 24GB RAM allocated and 2TB of disk space. Overall, the database connections are very slow and one thing that stands out is that the connection to the database server via SSMS takes 5-10 seconds. On other much less powerful servers, it takes 1-2 seconds. The VM is technically way more powerful than other machines, but the connection to the server is too slow. So, my guess is the issue is network related, but any clues on where I should be looking? Thanks!

• Outlook 2010 corrupts all Office attachments on a Server 2008R2 Remote Desktop Server

  I have a rather annoying problem with a clients new Remote Desktop server. The problem is that any and all Office attachments (tested with Word and Excel documents) sent to the users via email cannot be opened due to the file seemingly being corrupted/damaged. I have determined that it is a local problem on the server, as the attachments work fine on my own pc. Also I believe the problem is isolated to Outlook, as the users can open already stored Office files without any issues. What are your thoughts on this? Extra information: The server is running Microsoft Server 2008 R2. The Office is a version 2010. It is handeling the roles of AD and RDS - The client only has one server, hence the breach of best practise. There is currently no AV software on the server. I have tried running a repair as well as a reinstalling of Office, with the error still there.
