  • Database/Web Server and SQL Server Setup - Security?

    This seems really basic, but I couldn't find an answer already ... we are looking to deploy a website to an IIS server, and a database to a separate server. We aren't sure how to best secure this for access by internal users and internet. The IIS Server is not connected to the domain, and neither is the database at the moment. Should it be? Also, if we use SQL Server authentication instead of Windows Authentication, should we just hard-code the user/password into our internal apps?

  • How to have your DNS servers forward queries for internet names

    I have 2 Domain Controllers / DNS servers on Windows 2012, their IPs are 10.0.1.10 and 10.0.1.11 Another server acts as the DHCP server for clients, and sets their primary and secondary DNS to the IP addresses of the previously mentioned domain controllers / DNS servers. However I cannot resolve internet domain names, presumably as they are not hosted on the DNS servers. So my question is what do I have to do on my setup to resolve external domains? Thank you!   • SQL Server Agents jobs and turning off the server

    I'm really new to SQL Agent jobs, but I am attempting to build up a maintainance regime for a server that will be turned off and on again at unknown intervals. It may run without being shutdown for a month, or it might only be turned on 9-5... we don't know and the client can't tell us because they don't know. So what I'm wondering is, what do I need to do to get SQL Server to run monthly and daily jobs either when they are due, or if the due date is missed, get them to be run when the server is next powered on. I could come up with a mish-mash of periodic jobs and 'on-power-up' jobs, but if there is something more elegant that would be wonderful. Obviously I'll need to ensure the SQL Server Agent is configure to start when the computer is powered up, but what else?

  • Apache server-status when running as proxy server

    We are running apache as a proxy server and have tomcat behind apache. We are using server_status module but when we try to access server_status as in https://host.com/server-status it redirects to tomcat and we get 404 error. I am quite new to this, tried going through apache docs but unable to figure out the solution.     In tortoisesvn i get the error Can't create directory 'C:\dev\repo\subfolder\db\transactions\49-1g.txn': ... I used robocopy (i cant remember if i used /copyall) to copy the files onto an external drive then i copied it back after a format. Now ATM i cannot commit. How do i fix this?

    Have two web servers, development/staging and production. Code and some documentation is moved from the staging area to production either through on-demand jobs or nightly via a global replication job. The production server of course sits isolated in a DMZ. There is some content that gets uploaded to the live server that needs to be replicated back to staging. Our security team is locking the network down (and they should) and restricting access to the live server. Best suggestions for replication of "live" data back to "stage" and backing up the live server also.

    I know there are SMTP services out there which you can pay to send e-mails with but surely it's not that difficult to set up one of your own. How can I set up an SMTP server on Windows Server 2008 R2 that is: - Secure; only authorized users/hostnames/etc can send mail - Reliable; e-mails don't get lost - Not treated as spam; when e-mails are received from say gmail/outlook/hotmail they don't go straight to junk ** ** I understand this depends both on the server+e-mail headers AND e-mail content - I'm looking to safeguard the server part.     I am new to handling issues on server. when my system tried to reboot I could see two installables to boot from. windows server 2012- current os windows server secondary plex. So when ever there is a system restart the system it stops at this screen. And since I am connecting to this server using RDP I have to wait for the hetzner console to click on of the os to boot. Even though the current os is set as default and time given is 30 sec, it still waits for a user input. So I want to know which of the two should I be using to boot and I just want one os.

  • VMware server 2.0 SYN/ACK repeating issues

    VMWare Server 2.0.0 Build 122956 I am having some issues with connecting into a guest VM (Ubuntu linux 4.4.3-4 lucid) running under VMware 2.0 on a windows server host. All connections to and from the VM's work fine, except for FTP. I thought the issue was the FTP daemon at first but it has been ruled out that it is not the daemon or the server itself. When you try to connect to the FTP server from outside of the host OS it fails with a "421 Service not available" but when you try and connect from the local VM or from the host OS the connection goes through fine. I have ran many packet sniffs using wireshark/tcpdump from the VM, the host OS, and the client connecting, the most informative is the host OS. I have attached a PNG of the relavant packets that were captured. I viewed some other network traffic that was sniffed (WWW specifically) and it seems to do the same syn/ack repeating but the user doesnt see any issues. I have disabled the firewall and the issues persisits, I have tried with specific allow rules to ensure the data is allowed and no changes. It appears like VMware attempts to do the ICMP redirect and it works, but then it vmware repeats the packets sent so you get 3 syn/ack's for every one syn from the client. Also VMWare appears to be attempting to establish an FTP connection between the HOST OS and the GUEST OS, because I see the second SYN sent from the HOST OS to the GUEST to initiate a new connection, and it get the appropriate SYN/ACK followed by an ACK, but the client never sees any of this from its end. EG. syn from client syn/ack from host OS to client syn/ack from guest OS to client syn/ack from host OS to client The same thing happens when the connection reset is attempted, RST's start being sent and repeated, the server responds with a valid header to continue the FTP handshake but the RST acknowledgement is allready issued and things are closed. I am not 100% if this is a bug in VMware or possibly a VMNetwork missconfiguration. Does anyone have any thoughts on where exactly the issue could be, things to try to verify or rule out?   • Mysterious xyz.event files appearing

    I am getting mysterious .event files - always empty, created by me a few weeks ago - in several local project directories. They are all Subversion checkouts. They are always named after the directory they reside in, so a directory named pagination will contain a pagination.event file. Does anybody know what this is? Possibly important information: I am working on a Windows 7 Workstation I use NuSphere's PHP IDE (no updates recently) I use TortoiseSVN for version control I set up a Windows 7 backup job recently that ran once, I can' remember when exactly. The event files seem to turn up only in repositories There is no external access to those repositories

  • Macrium Reflect Server v5 for Server Cloning?

    I'm starting to have clients with basic windows server setups. They have data backups, but no real strategy for system backups. I've been looking at cloning software which with linux or images seems easy enough (aside from DC complications, and other things I'm going to ignore until I learn more). What do people do when you have a non-disk hardware failure? I"ve been looking at server migration backup solutions and this one seems to be the cheapest. Anyone tried this? What more do I need to do to safeguard server setups? The hardware on these systems is a little out of date with Server 2003 setup at both businesses. Thanks!

  • Server browser resolves localhost, but not server name

    I have a 2008 R2 server that I recently installed Solarwinds on. It is running IIS V7.5. I got the Solarwinds site loaded into IIS, however I can't resolve it when using the server name. It will however resolve when I put http:// localhost into the browser. I have tried editing the Hosts file to no avail. I have also played around with our DNS server to see if I can figure anything out there. I mess with the bindings in IIS, when I remove the binding for "localhosts" it stops resolving. But still get DNS lookup failed if I add the actual server name to the binding. Any ideas?

  • Manually Add the TortoiseSVN Registry information?

    I recently installed TortoiseSVN on my Windows 7 64 bit computer. For reasons outside the scope of this question, the installer could not get appropriate permissions to add the keys that TSVN needs in the registry. I'd like to add those keys manually, with a reg file. I tried unzipping the .msi installer to see if the .reg file was there, but no luck. I looked around the net a little, but no luck. I looked in the source code, figuring there must be a file in there somewhere with a list of all the registry changes in one place, but I haven't found any such thing. How can I get a complete list of registry changes for a fresh TortoiseSVN installation?

  • Windows Server 2008 - Non-Domain users can see my server shares

    Windows Server 2008 - Server Machine Windows 7 Professional - Client Machine I have a domain. It was setup by the client. The shares on the server are restricted correctly when a user logs on to the domain and uses their workstation, I have a few groups setup to restrict some access but the groups are at their core "Domain Users". The problem I am having is that when a user brings in a laptop with Windows 7 Pro on it, they can type up the name of the server in the "Run Dialog" on the start menu like "\SERVERNAME\" and access all of the shares freely... because they are not logged in to the domain there are no restrictions it seems.I have reviewed the permissions on the folders and they all have to be "Domain Users" and I have removed "Everyone" from the list of people able to see it. Guest access is also disabled...What am I doing wrong? Only group in the list is "Domain Users" isn't a domain user a user that is logged in to the domain? How do I stop non-domain users from seeing the shared folder? I noticed this on Windows Server 2003 too at another time. I assume they both had similar security issues and neither were set up by myself so I am not sure what could have been enabled or specifically deactivated that makes this issue appear.

    I have a question and need a suggestion. We have to manage .htaccess file on three different instances - dev, qa and prod. Currently we have tortoise configured for scm. The issue we are facing is that .htaccess for dev & qa is different from the prod. At present, we have to manually merge differences from dev .htaccess to prod .htaccess. Is there any alternative way of managing this file without this manual process since it is error prone. Any suggestions in this regard will be highly appreciated

    Why do build servers poll for changes instead of SVN firing off an event (or a post-commit step) that tells the build server to start a build? It seems terribly inefficient to poll for changes, especially when the number of projects increases and the polling period is set to a very low value (for example, 30 seconds).

I could not figure out what exactly is stores in Statistics? (I read it saves Vector, but what Vector?) When/In which scenario SQL Server updates Statistics? How/why some time they go out of sync (old Statistics) In case of old Statistics is a manual DBA/Developer intervention is required or SQL Server Will get them updated. As a DBA/Developer how to find out if Statistics OLD? What should we do?
