• How do you keep track of your programming TODOs?

  I'm one of those people who can't get anything done without a to-do list. If it isn't on the list it doesn't exist. Notepad Method: When I'm programming I've been keeping notepad open with a list of to-do's for my current project. I'll constantly re-arrange these based off priority and I cross them off and move them to the completed section when I'm finished with that particular task. What I'm talking about are groundbreaking things like the rise of object oriented programming, C++, or PHP. With new programming languages I mean that they actually are completely different from what you know, as different as when you set a guy who used assembler for a decade, and even programmed some kind of 3D game in it, in front of something as high-level as PHP, Ruby or Python? • Why can't there be an "ultimate" programming language? [closed]

  There is an uncountable sum of programming languages out there. They obviously all have their pro's and con's - but why can't there be one to "beat them all"? The main part of a programming language is it's syntax and what's possible with it. The rest are usually only a bunch of libraries, frameworks and extensions wrapped around it. So couldn't you combine all the great aspects and experiences gained from the thousands of programming languages out there to build one with a syntax that fits every task? Wouldn't it be better having only one programming language? I see only problems with the current amount of the ones in use. Why can't there be a perfect language when thinking of syntax, constructs and typing?

  I came by the following comment today on twitter "R is not a programming language, it's a statistics package with the GUI missing." And I am wondering - Why not? What is "missing" in R to make it a "programming language" ? Update: For the protocol, I am a big fan of R, use it daily, and support it's existence. I now changed the name of this thread from "Why is R NOT a programming language?" to "Why might someone say R is NOT a programming language?" Which better reflects my motivation for this thread (which is, to know if R has any programmatical disadvantages that I might have not heard about).

  Hi, If I defined a ENUM in a base object with serveral default values. When I inherit from the base object I want to add more options the the ENUM list which are specific to the inheriting object. For example my base could have a ENUM called Direction with values: None ALL Stop Start I create a new class call Compass which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction. North South East West I create a new class call Navigation which inherits the base class and what to add the following to the ENUM Direction.   The stereotypical programmer is very keen on writing software in one particular programming language and is very fanatic about defending their programming language in any way they can, without being realistic about whether their programming language is the best tool for the job. The other kind of programmer can take a step back and switch between languages (or is not very concerned about doing everything in just one language), is a "jack-of-all-trades", and doesn't mind learning a new language as long as it solves their problem in a good fashion. Did you ever switch from one programming language to another? If yes, why? [P.S. Please don't just answer with "I switched from language A to B because company X sucks! I think it will be very useful to understand why people switch between languages, or what's the best tool for a particular kind of job]

• Should I Teach My Son Programming? What approaches should I take? [closed]

  I was wondering if it's a good idea to teach object oriented programming to my son? I was never really good at math as a kid, but I think since I've started programming it's given me a greater ability to understand math by being better able to visualise relationships between abstract models. I thought it might give him a better advantage in learning & applying logical & mathematical concepts throughout his life if he was able to take advantage of the tools available to programmers. what would be the best programming fields, techniques and/or concepts? What approach should I take? what concepts should I avoid? what fields of mathematics would he find this benfits him most? He's only 2 now so it wouldn't be for another few years before I do this, (and even at that, only from a very high level point of view).   I'm trying to deploy windows 7 with SCCM 2012 R2 to physical desktops and laptops. But the task sequence keeps failing, no matter what I try. When I try it on a VM it works fine. However, when I try it on a physical computer it fails. So I think it has something to do with drivers, but I already tried both the "auto apply drivers" + wmi query for model method, and also the "apply driver package" + wmi query for model method. In the link below I added a zip file, containing two other zip files. One is a captured log from a failed osd on a desktop, the other is the export of my task sequence. Download zip-file with log and TS If anyone could resolve the issue, or share their own task sequence for such a task (pure sccm 2012 (R2), no MDT), that would be great.

• SQL Maintenance Cleanup Task 'Success' But not deleting files

  I have a maintenance plan setup for a databases on a server. As part of the backup is a Maintenance Cleanup Task. SQL Version 2008 The task that 'succeeds' is setup as: Delete backup files Correct folder (same address as the backup task) File extension: bak (NOT .bak) Delete files older than: 20 Hour(s) I have other similar cleanup tasks that occur in the same maintenance plan which work fine. This plan has worked fine in the past, I just noticed that last night it reported 'success' and the rest of the plan continued, however the file from 2 days ago still remains. I have checked similar questions such as this question, and this is not the case as my maintenance task worked fine two days ago and for the past several weeks:

This is a specific question for OSX. Chrome has a built in task manager under "Tools" to look at the process within Chrome, extremely beneficial in locating a stuck page. What is the similar feature in firefox? • Using a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) for a scheduled task

  Back in Windows Server 2008 R2, when stand-alone Managed Service Accounts (sMSA) were new, they could not be used to execute scheduled tasks. In Windows Server 2012 however, there is a new type of account called the Group Managed Service Account (gMSA). This type of account is supposedly capable of launching scheduled tasks in the task scheduler on clients & member servers inside of a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain functional level. • Get program that is stuck under task bar in Windows 7

  I have a program that is stuck under the task bar in Windows 7. I cannot click on it because (I think) the click is interpreted as being on the task bar and not on the program. How do I recover it? The program does not show up when I alt-tab through all of the programs. It also does not show up in Applications in the Task Manager.

  The Script Task and Script component are often used by people developing SSIS packages because they are easy to use and now because SSIS could be perceived to be more developer friendly they are very powerful. That being said we should no be using them everywhere.  There are generally Tasks/Components already provided that will do the job it may be that we have to rethink the way we want to draw our package. I had cause last week to break out the script component in SQL Server 2008 SP1 and found that it was broken.  I don’t know when it broke as I do not use them all that often.  My error was as below.     Something must have overwritten this template information.  I looked in Event Viewer and tried the things it suggested but the templates still did not work.  Here is how I got them eventually to work for me (Your Mileage may vary) Open up a Command Prompt window using an administrator level account and “as an administrator” vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptTask /setup vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptComponent /setup   This worked for me.  Hope it helps.

• Dynamic State Machine in Ruby? Do State Machines Have to be Classes?

  Question is, are state machines always defined statically (on classes)? Or is there a way for me to have it so each instance of the class with has it's own set of states? I'm checking out Stonepath for implementing a Task Engine. I don't really see the distinction between "states" and "tasks" in there, so I'm thinking I could just map a Task directly to a state. This would allow me to be able to define task-lists (or workflows) dynamically, without having to do things like: aasm_event :evaluate do transitions :to => :in_evaluation, :from => :pending end aasm_event :accept do transitions :to => :accepted, :from => :pending end aasm_event :reject do transitions :to => :rejected, :from => :pending end Instead, a WorkItem (the main workflow/task manager model), would just have many tasks. Then the tasks would work like states, so I could do something like this: aasm_initial_state :initial tasks.each do |task| aasm_state task.name.to_sym end previous_state = nil tasks.each do |tasks| aasm_event task.name.to_sym do transitions :to => "#{task.name}_phase".to_sym, :from => previous_state ? "#{task.name}_phase" : "initial" end previous_state = state end However, I can't do that with the aasm gem because those methods (aasm_state and aasm_event) are class methods, so every instance of the class with that state machine has the same states. I want it so a "WorkItem" or "TaskList" dynmically creates a sequence of states and transitions based on the tasks it has. This would allow me to dynamically define workflows and just have states map to tasks. Are state machines ever used like this?

• How to set Delphi WebBrowser Base directory different that HTML location

  I have a Delphi program that creates HTML files. Later when a button is pressed a TWebBrowser is created and a WebBrowser.Navigate causes the html page to display. Is there anyway to set the WebBrowser "default directory" so it will always be the location of the Delphi executable not the HTML file? I do not want to set the Base value in the HTML to a hardcoded value because then when the HTML is ran from another Delphi exe they are not found. for example: if the exe is run from D:\data\delphi\pgm.exe then the base location D:\data\delphi\ and the jpgs are at D:\data\delphi\jpgs\ but if the exe is run from: C:\stuff\pgm.exe i want the base location to be C:\stuff\ and the jpgs to be at C:\stuff\jpgs\ So I cannot write a line in the HTML with the base location since when it is ran from another exe it would point to wrong location for that exe. So I either need to set the base location when I create the webbrowser and before I read the HTML or I need a way to pass into the webbrowser the location where I can then set the base location. Sorry for being so long-winded but I could not figure out how to saw what I needed.

• Ideas Needed for a Base Code System

  I've developed a PHP web application that is currently in need of a strategic restructuring. Currently when we setup new clients we give them the entire code base on a subdomain of our main domain and create a new table for them in the database. This results in each client having the entire codebase, meaning when we make bug changes, fixes we have to go back and apply them independently across all clients and this is a pain. What I'd like to create is a base code server that holds all the core PHP files. base.domain.com Then all of our clients (client.domain.com) will only need a few files: config.php would have the database connection information. index.php - displays the login box if session non-existant, otherwise it loads baseline code via remote includes to base.domain.com. My question is does my logic seem feasible? How do other people handle similar situations by having a base code? Also.... Is it even possbile to remotely include PHP files from base.domain.com and include them in client.domain.com? Thanks, Tegan

• VB.NET class inherits a base class and implements an interface issue (works in C#)

  I am trying to create a class in VB.NET which inherits a base abstract class and also implements an interface. The interface declares a string property called Description. The base class contains a string property called Description. The main class inherits the base class and implements the interface. The existence of the Description property in the base class fulfills the interface requirements. This works fine in C# but causes issues in VB.NET. First, here is an example of the C# code which works: public interface IFoo { string Description { get; set; } } public abstract class FooBase { public string Description { get; set; } } public class MyFoo : FooBase, IFoo { } Now here is the VB.NET version which gives a compiler error: Public Interface IFoo Property Description() As String End Interface Public MustInherit Class FooBase Private _Description As String Public Property Description() As String Get Return _Description End Get Set(ByVal value As String) _Description = value End Set End Property End Class Public Class MyFoo Inherits FooBase Implements IFoo End Class If I make the base class (FooBase) implement the interface and add the Implements IFoo.Description to the property all is good, but I do not want the base class to implement the interface. The compiler error is: Class 'MyFoo' must implement 'Property Description() As String' for interface 'IFoo'. Implementing property must have matching 'ReadOnly' or 'WriteOnly' specifiers. Can VB.NET not handle this, or do I need to change my syntax somewhere to get this to work?

• Common protected data member in base class?

  I have a base class and several derived classes. The derived classes use some common data, can I just put those common data as protected member of the base class? I know the protected member breaks encapsulation sometimes, so I wonder if there is any good approach. Here is a specific example: class Base{ public: virtual void foo() = 0; void printData(); protected: std::vector<std::string> mData; } class Dr1 : public Base{ public: virtual void foo(); //could change mData } class Dr2 : public Base{ public: virtual void foo(); //could change mData } If I put mData into Dr1 and Dr2 as private member, then I need to put it in both of them, and I can not have printData() in Base since printData() need access to mData unless I make printData() virtual and have identical function in both Dr1 and Dr2, which doesn't make much sense to me. Is there a better way to approach this without using protected member? Thank you.

• I love programming but never get projects started

  I read this question and the most voted answer and said to myself "Those things are what I want to do! But why the heck I'm not doing it?" The problem here is that I can't get anything started. I hope you get some kind of idea what I'm interested in and can help me continue programming. I'm interested in embedded programming and I'd like to learn some ARM assembly. I think those could be combined with image processing. Also I'd love to create programs that are actually useful to some people but it seems like there are already multiple programs for pretty much every purpose. Maybe if I found an interesting program without open source alternatives I could get a great project to work on. How could I get myself to finally start a project or few and keep myself interested in them? I just want to get myself to do something I love.
