  • Staging database good practices

    Hi, I'm about to deploy to production a fairly complex site and for the first time need a staging environment where I can test things in a more realistic environment, especially with regard to some external services that cannot be run locally. My general plan is to develop & test first locally, push simple changes (small bug fixes, HTML/CSS, JS, etc) direct to production, and for larger changes, push first to staging subdomain for thorough testing and then to production. I don't think that I need to keep the staging and production databases in sync (occasional manual updating would do) but I'm wondering if there are any general good practices with regard to maintaing a staging environment in relation to a production environment, especially when it comes to databases. Any general thoughts/advice/experience would be appreciated.

  • ColdFusion structs Direct Assignment vs object literal notation.

    The newer versions of ColdFusion (I believe CF 8 and 9) allow you to create structs with object literal notation similar to JSON. My question is, are there specific benefits (execution efficiency maybe) to using object literal notation over individual assignments for data that is essentially static? For example: With individual assignments you would do something like this: var user = {}; user.Fname = "MyFirstnam"; user.Lname = "MyLastName"; user.titles = []; ArrayAppend(user.titles,'Mr'); ArrayAppend(user.titles,'Dr.'); Whereas with object literals you would do something like. var user = {Fname = "MyFirstnam", Lname = "MyLastName", titles = ['Mr','Dr']}; Now this limited example is admittedly simple, but if titles was an array of structures (Say an array of addresses), the literal notation becomes awkward to work with.

  • Viewing HTML inside Applet without using JEditorPane

    Hello, I have a small (500kb) swing applet that displays very simple/limited set of small HTML page(s) inside it with JEditorPane, however this does not seem to work 100% fluently, some customers get a blank page displayed without any java exceptions. The page works OK from my machine. I need a more reliable way to show HTML page to all our users.   • How many disks is too many in this RAID 5 configuration??

    HP 2012i SAN, 7 disks in RAID 5 with 1 hot spare, took several days to expand the volume from 5 to 7 300GB SAS drives. Looking for suggestions about when and how I would determine that having 2 volumes in the SAN, each one with RAID 5, would be better?? I can add 3 more drives to the controller someday, the SAN is used for ESX/vSphere VMs. Thank you...

  • PayPal: IPN vs PDT

    Hi, I'm having some trouble choosing between PayPal's Instant Payment Notification (IPN) and Payment Data Transfer (PDT). Basically, users buy a one-off product on my site, pay on PayPal, and return to my site. I understand how IPN works but I'm now seeing that I might be able to trigger the various actions that take place after a successful purchase more easily with PDT, as the data gets returned there and then (as opposed to needing a separate listener). However, PayPal's PDT documentation contains this cryptic line: "PDT is not meant to be used with credit card or Express Checkout transactions." ... but I can't find anything further whatsoever on the topic. (1) Are credit cards REALLY not meant to be used with PDT? I would like more than a sentence. (2) Does that mean that a user must have/create a PayPal account to pay? (3) Does it mean that if I want to allow users to pay with their PayPal accounts AND/OR with credit cards directly, I must implement IPN? Could anyone who's gone through this kindly shed some light?     I have a set of objects in a Vector from which I'd like to select a random subset (e.g. 100 items coming back; pick 5 randomly). In my first (very hasty) pass I did an extremely simple and perhaps overly clever solution: Vector itemsVector = getItems(); Collections.shuffle(itemsVector); itemsVector.setSize(5); While this has the advantage of being nice and simple, I suspect it's not going to scale very well, i.e. Collections.shuffle() must be O(n) at least. My less clever alternative is Vector itemsVector = getItems(); Random rand = new Random(System.currentTimeMillis()); // would make this static to the class List subsetList = new ArrayList(5); for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { // be sure to use Vector.remove() or you may get the same item twice subsetList.add(itemsVector.remove(rand.nextInt(itemsVector.size()))); } Any suggestions on better ways to draw out a random subset from a Collection?

When adding one more byte 0x18 to the array, the exception raised: InvalidKeyException: Key length not 128/192/256 bits. But the original 18 bytes (from 0 to 17) are not multiple of nither 128, 192 or 256. I would like to understand the math here.. can anyone explain me? Thanks!

  • Encode audio to aac with libavcodec

    I'm using libavcodec (latest git as of 3/3/10) to encode raw pcm to aac (libfaac support enabled). I do this by calling avcodec_encode_audio repeatedly with codec_context-frame_size samples each time. The first four calls return successfully, but the fifth call never returns. When I use gdb to break, the stack is corrupt. If I use audacity to export the pcm data to a .wav file, then I can use command-line ffmpeg to convert to aac without any issues, so I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong. I've written a small test program that duplicates my problem.   • Google Maps v3 InfoWindow Too Wide

    In Google Maps v3, I can't seem to get my infoWindow to a width smaller than 200px.     I'm trying to get MRT working in OpenGL to try out deferred rendering. Here's the situation as I understand it. Create 3 render buffers (for example). Two RGBA8 and one Depth32. Create an FBO. Attach render buffers to FBO. ColorAttachment0/1 for color buffers, DepthAttachment for depth buffer. Bind the FBO. Draw geometry. Send data to different attachments using gl_FragData[] in the frag shader. At this point I would want to take the data in another pass using GLSL, how can a) retrieve data from the framebuffer color attachments, b) get data from the depth component.

  • WPF 4.0 Font Rendering Issue

    I'm getting a weird rendering issue with WPF 4 applications in the way they render some of the text as it's stretching it and making it very narrow. .net 3.5: .net 4.0: At first I thought it could be a problem with the font, but I'm also seeing the same problem in the Blend 4 beta: I'm running XP SP3, Visual Studio 2010 Professional and everything's as up to date as it can be. I'm not noticing any such problems with Silverlight 4 apps I have built on the same machine... Anyone else seen this or know why it's happening?

  • Visual studio 2010 doesn't make the changes when i do a build/compile a DLL file

    Ok so i change some code, re-build it and then, say for arguments sake i had a print statement outputting 'test2', well if i change it to 'test3' its still re-producing the old code 'test2'. Ive deleted the debug folder and rebuilt but no good. Then randomly about 10 builds later it will catch up. Ive also closed VS2010 and then re-opened the project but that doesnt help. What can i do as i need to see the changes asap? ps it's definitely the correct file EDIT: I've done clean and rebuild but it hasnt done anything EDIT: This is a .dll file which im modifying

    I am using msdb..sp_help_job to access whether a job succeeded or failed and can retrieve a general error. But, I want to access the specific error for the step that failed. I cannot seem to find it.   • destroy cfwindow in javascript 'is not a function'

    Hi All, Having an issue here that I have tried everything I can think of but cant get it to work. I have a page with a link that creates a cfwindow like so function create_window(ID){ var config = new Object(); config.modal=true; config.center=true; config.height=775; config.width=700; config.resizable=false; config.closable=false; config.draggable=false; config.refreshonshow=true; ColdFusion.Window.create('newWindow','Window Title', '/source/url'+ID, config) The window is created and the URL has the ID parsed to it that is used for displaying the correct item in the window. This all works fine. The problem is when I try and close the window and open a new window with a different item being displayed, the URL is not changed. I realise that this is because the window is being hidden, and not destroyed, and therefore it is the same window being opened. So I have created an onHide event handler to destroy the window like so. function showItemDetails(){ var ID=document.getElementById("sList").value create_window(ID); ColdFusion.Window.onHide('newWindow', refreshList); } function refreshList(){ ColdFusion.bindHandlerCache['sList'].call(); ColdFusion.Window.destroy('newWindow',true); } Now when I close the window Firebug is returning the error "ColdFusion.Window.destroy is not a function" (In IE the error is "Object doesn't support this property or method"). I have made sure we are running the latest version of ColdFusion 8.01 on the server (as I know that .destroy wasnt added until 8.01) and have applied the latest hotfixes to the server as well. Any ideas?

The style came from http://mattserbinski.com/blog/look-and-feel-progressbar and the DebuggingConverter is a no-op converter that prints the value, type and parameter to the Console. I have verified that the converter for the Maximum is being called when my NumTubes property is changed. Basically, the ProgressBar won't redraw until the Value changes. So, if I have 2 tubes and 1 is failed, even if I add 20 more tubes, the bar is still half filled until the NumFailed changes, then the proportion is updated. I've tried adding spurious notifications of the NumFailed property, but that apparently doesn't work since the value didn't change. Ideas?

After alot of trial and error I traced the problem down. It turns out this works: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <BulkDataExchangeRequests xmlns="urn:ebay:apis:eBLBaseComponents"> <Header> <Version>583</Version> <SiteID>0</SiteID> </Header> <AddFixedPriceItemRequest xmlns="urn:ebay:apis:eBLBaseComponents"> while this (what I've been sending) doesn't: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <BulkDataExchangeRequests xmlns="urn:ebay:apis:eBLBaseComponents"> <Header> <Version>583</Version> <SiteID>0</SiteID> </Header> <AddFixedPriceItemRequest> The difference is the xml namespace attribute on the AddFixedPriceItemRequest . All of my XML is currently being marshalled via JAXB and I'm not sure what is the best way to go about adding a second xmlns attribute to a different element in my file. So that's the question. How do I add an xmlns attribute to another element in JAXB? The BulkDataExchange probably takes the XML payload, breaks it up, and send the pieces out to the Merchant or Trading API. The inner pieces of the payload then do not have the namespace and the get the error. This is a guess on my part but I wouldn't be surprised if this is what was going on behind the scenes. The main issue is that the index.php file residing in the /web folder uses the /web path in its path to images and scripts. So instead of href="/css/main.css" //this would work it uses href="/web/css/main.css" //this doesn't work, already in the /web/ directory! Any ideas? Thanks!
